20020705 || Grushirsky Festival || Samara, Russia #JayapatakaSwamiArchives

A 2002 multi-speaker recording from the Grushinski festival in Samara featuring Jayapataka Swami introducing and explaining Bengali devotional ballads (bhajans) and the practice of chanting Hare Krishna. The speakers contrast spiritual and material vibration using metaphors ("habu dubu" breath-of-air), teach core bhakti concepts (jiva/soul, Krishna as supreme, service as remedy for suffering), and emphasize the Hare Krishna maha-mantra as a freely offered "medicine" by Lord Chaitanya. The transcript includes musical/cultural context (baul singers, ekatara instrument), anecdotes (George Harrison adopting chanting), and a practical example of congregational preaching and a disciple-authored book describing outreach in a restrictive country.
Sam it's. It's J Ram K Sa Sam Nam Ham sa Ra ra Kishna Sam Ra sa Dano Jesus Ram. Hail Ram. Ram. Ram. Ram. Ram Harry Ha Sam Hari Sam Ram Sam sa Sam Kisha Sam Sara sa it I go Rango Bo ra Sam it sing Haribo Sam.
Hare Krishna. My name is Jay Pataka Swami. I'm coming from India.
Hare Krishna.
This is my. I think about my third year at the Grushinski festival. A very wonderful get together of so many hundreds of thousands of people.
Here.
The people get together singing.
Puppies.
In India we have also so many very classical spiritual ballads. And then we call it Bajan. You're calling Belladam and we're calling. So what. They always, they try to present some kind of spiritual message. Just like he's saying, so what he's singing. Bole means to chant when we sing. Nitai and Gore, they're the two brothers.
Who.
Gave our love of God to everyone freely by singing and dancing. He thought if you love God or we know in Indian language is known as Krishna, then you love everyone. Just like if you water the root of a tree, all the tree gets the water. And they gave this message that everyone is brother and sister. Everyone in the world is one big family under the Supreme Lord. Christians, Jews, Orthodox, Protestants, Muslims, everyone, they're all big family. But some may not accept it and some may. But the Lord is when you say their names because their names are spiritually potent, then they are dancing in your mind. Means comes from the Sanskrit word mean to dance. Some people here are called Natalia. So nata means to dance. So that natya from natyam. And that means also drama comes the Bengali word. So whenever we sing Nitai and Gore, they're dancing in our mind, in our heart. Difference in material vibration and spiritual vibration. Spiritual vibration. You naturally feel like dancing. You naturally feel blissful. You see, with the material vibration, people have to get drunk before they really start to dance. But the spiritual vibration makes you naturally intoxicated with spiritual bliss. And everyone feels happy.
Sometimes.
The ballads they would sing were giving very deep spiritual information. This one, this Radha crystal has a lot of instructions.
La.
Means you are in the ocean, amateur birth and death. And you are trying to get happiness. But in trying to get that happiness, you are getting sometimes breaths of air and sometimes you are getting dunked in the water by the waves.
That's called.
Means sometime getting drowning under the water and sometime coming up for a breath of air. Habu means coming out for air. Someone wants to be happy. They make all the arrangements. But then someone steals their wallet and they're very frustrated. You know, all kinds of things happen. Maybe they come here to the fair with their girlfriend, but the girlfriend goes off with somebody else. Then they're feeling very bad, they're trying to have a good time, and they just hear their grandmother sick. Or maybe they have a good time for a while.
That'S feeling their breath of air.
Then they are to go back for the hard work.
Pay the bills.
So material life is like the habu dubu. Sometimes a breath of air, sometimes just fighting for your survival. So the Aleutianists are all remembering that breath of air. I think that side was happy and now it's. Anyway, everyone else is struggling. I'm struggling. But we once a year we come to Brasinski. We have a good time, we swim in the Volga. So this is called habu of the material world. Because we don't know that we can always be happy. That's a Bengali ballad.
Very simple Bengali language.
Jiva means a living entity. And Krishna means Krishna and dasa means servant. I am your servant because you're all Krishna's parts and parts of.
The.
Living entity. Understand? I'm Krishna's servant means to have faith. To have faith, yes. I'm servant of God. I'm servant of Krishna. And then if they actually act as.
A servant of the Lord.
Quarterly. This is quarterly.
Quarterly. We need to do it.
Bishas is believing. And quarterly is to do it.
No more.
No more suffering. So in material world, you want to be happy, but you have to suffer. But in spiritual life, you realize you're the servant of the Lord. You serve the Lord. No more suffering. But material nature will try to attract you. Enjoy, be happy.
But it's attracting you.
Go for that and you get kicked.
No peace.
It looks very difficult. How to be a devotee and chanting Hare Krishna, eating vegetarian food. It seems tough. But actually it's such a wonderful way to live. Whether you're in your house or whether.
You'Re in some Hare Krishna temple.
And you become very happy. How you're happy when you can't understand it. How you're happy when you don't understand yourself. It's inner happiness, profound happiness. So if we understand we are Krishna's servant, then we are having no more suffering. At least that much is finished. Suffering is over.
Again.
Means what?
Yes.
Okay. So single means everyone.
You can compose this into Russian. It's a nice song to put into Russian. Bala be chabol. So the previous we said no more suffering. When you Believe that you're a servant of Krishna. Now he's saying when you.
Are. Okay.
I can sell a lot of books.
Yeah. Yeah.
That's how it start. But we're in the seven.
Yeah.
She's offering. Anyone want to buy the book?
It.
What does that mean? Okay, that one you got.
You're really learning Bengali. You know what sange means? That means our association. Sangha. Sangay means with our. With us. Along with us. So let's go. Come with us. And come with us. Because this is only. Only plea we're making. Just be with us. Chant Hare Krishna and be happy. She says that you side words we will sing also. Someone take the book back to them. They can read along.
We don't have a board.
We should have a board.
La ma sam Last verse.
We didn't do the first one. We'll go back to the first one last. The last one. Sakala Kishn sackle be put. Dry cycle be put. We call it danger. Danger?
Yeah.
Above this. How many like danger? You like danger. How many like to avoid danger? Yeah. We got the majority. All dangers go away. They all go away. When Silkwood Bhakti Vinod Kalpur says when you chant. When you sing his holy name.
All.
The obstacles in our life go away. All the causes of suffering.
Ramir.
That's why we should chant Hare Krishna. Krishna Hari Krishna.
Same thing.
I never did the first verse of this ballad. I skipped to the second verse. The first verse is very nice. Also it reminds us of Sabana.
Shik.
I skipped this one first because it's a little complicated.
Yeah.
I'm not sure means giving instructions. Nadia means.
Of course.
It's a very common Russian name. But it's also a name of a place in Bengal. A very holy place. That's a place of what? Catania's childhood pastime. Anybody here named Nadia?
Wow.
Two, three.
So.
You didn't know your name. It's a holy name. So the Nadia. That's where Garden Thai. They started the Sanketa movement of chanting the holy names and singing the songs. And they were dancing and chanting throughout this area. In Bengal they taught everyone that we are eternal souls. The life force that's in the body never die. Only the body gets old. Body dies, but the living force never gets old. Never dies. Because even when people get old, they still feel young at heart. But their bodies are no longer young. The soul is by nature eternal. And we are that soul. We are that living for. So by singing transcendental songs you feel transcendental. Soul feels Happy. When the soul feels happy. The mind and the body also feel happy. When the body only feels happy. If we don't please the mind and the living force the self, we're not fully satisfied. That's why people, they try very hard to be happy by pleasing the senses. But if they don't please the sense soul, then they don't feel satisfied. They feel some pleasure, but somehow it's not complete. Just like George Harrison, he thought that when I'm going to be rich and famous, then I'll be fully. That's the perfection of life. I'll be fully happy. When he was one of the Beatles, he became the most famous rich person. Then he realized this is not it, I'm still not satisfied. Then he started looking for a spiritual answer. And that's when he started he found Bible and he started to chant Hare Krishna. So Prabhupada told them that he didn't have to give up his singing. He could go on doing what he's doing, just try to do something for Krishna. So that's why he's saying the song My sweet Lord. There are many actual songs that he sang which have some spiritual message someone has the eyes to see. When he passed away, we had memorial service and some of the musicians who knew his songs came, were singing them and showing all the spiritual messages he had to say. This was at Mayapur. They gave their teachings Lord Shetania to all the residents and why you are remaining sleeping in this material world, you should wake up.
Foreign.
Sleeping soul, wake up. Actually within us, our soul, our real self, the real person we are, is basically sleeping. We want to wake that up so we can actually realize who we are. Most people, they're almost like living dead. They're not awake to their actual eternal identity and they're disallowing the mind to run the whole show. And spiritual life means the soul takes charge and makes the mind serve the.
Soul.
The mind serves the soul and the senses are under control of the mind. So we use our senses and different productive networks. Helping others, serving others, meditating and doing our normal work. In this way we keep our senses busy in things which are either just for self preservation or directly in service of the Lord. And in this way we are able to control the senses and control the and use them in the service of the soul. Wake up, wake up you sleeping soul.
Wake up.
Realize who is the real person in this body. You are lying dormant. You're lying sleeping. And there's a mature nature forgetful of your actual potential. It's like sleeping on the lap of a witch. If you are sleeping in the lap of your loving mother, no problem. Yesterday was speech in the Kalini expression. Should wake up and run off. Go to your real mother.
Our Father.
He is our life and soul. He's a treasure of our life On Sacrovisha. Krishna is the treasure of our life. How do you say that? So that's the Lord telling you a time. Wake up, Wake up. So Lakshyanya. He was giving his teaching. So this song, Jeev Jago song that tells some of the teachings of Lord Chaitanya. One of the teachings he gave was that I brought the medicine for all these problems. Don't worry. Energy also means medicine. I brought the medicine. I have the medicine. For this material illusion. First you have to realize that we're sick, that we're in this illusion. Once we realize that actually I'm supposed to be always happy. I'm not supposed to be suffering like this. This condition of life I'm in is not my real natural condition. I'm much less than my full potential for happiness. Like somebody's smoking and always coughing. Then some friends say, hey, look it, you know it's not good. You're cough. Maybe better get a checkup. And they go to the doctor and they find they got cancer. Have to, you know, Then they have to take try to get the cure for that. So if you know we're sick, then we'll be more likely to take the cure. When we're young, everything looks beautiful. So many times people, they don't think that anything is wrong. By the time we're old enough to realize that we're so entangled that we can't get out of it. By the time we get unentangled in our old age, that time we're so weak and tired that we don't have the determination anymore to do it like this. Our whole life goes so for lots of we should start from five years of age. If you're already over five, then it's anyway better late than never. How many here are over five? Okay, then you can do it. Take the opportunity. He brought the medicine. What is that medicine? The great mantra, Hare Krishna. Hare Krishna Mantra means that which delivers the mind. Brings us to our eternal spiritual happy state. Gives us a spiritual knowledge about our existence. Nothing we can taste that every step puts out the fire of material existence. How many want this.
Medicine?
If we were to tell you how much it cost, nobody could pay. Even all the jewels, all the gold, all the rubles, dollars and euros together. Even everything in the whole universe cannot equal the price of this medic. But Lord Chaitanya is giving it special offer. He has the total start of this.
Marriage.
At this time. He just decided to give it our feeling. All you have to do is chant. Actually that's the secret word here is you don't have to pay for it, but you have to want it. You beg for I want it. If you want it, he'll give it to you. Just have to want it. He gave it to you. No, that's not a global place. I'm in here.
Wanna.
All right, so it's yours to have the next verse and this verse. Every time I hear this verse, my hair stand on him. It's amazing. How does it start? At face value, it seems like a very simple verse. But I feel there's something very special. I fell at the feet of Lord Chaitanya.
Shit.
And I beg from him. And then when you really get to high. Now that's how you feel.
I got it. I got it.
I got the holy name. So we hope all of you like that will feel so much ecstasy getting the holy air. That's right, Lord. We thank God we're teaching everyone sad. In these Bengali ballads, there's a lot of deep messages. I think every poet likes to share some inner realization with the people that are singing. But sometimes it's just very mundane things like you have a nice meal and you feel good and you have a nice girl. But then sometimes it's something more like how to deal with the emotions of life. Maybe something even more profound. But these songs are actually going to the real essence. They're going to what is the whole purpose of life. You can write songs in any language and any music style in the world, no problem. But if they give the same spiritual kind of message, then they are bona fide for the devotees to sing and to utilize. There was a special kind of musicians in Bengal a century ago when Bhakti, Gino, Thakura was there. And they're called the vowels bind and these baouuls. They were very popular. They would be playing their music with a strange kind of instrument called the ekatara. It's an upside down drum with a string attached to it. So two bamboos that are tied to the side of the drum. And the top of the string is tied to the end of the bamboo. So it's a percussion plus a string instrument. When they would pluck the string, it would go ting. And it also would pluck to be tied to the bottom of the drum.
And go.
And then as they would tighten the bamboos or loosen the string, would go woo. So just using that simple instrument, they could create a variety of sounds. And it was very good for singing.
Ballads.
But they were saying all nonsense. So Bhakti og said, it's so popular music, though. Use that to sing about Krishna. So like that, he said, you can use any kind of music.
So namaste.
Now it's already. No, no, it's okay. We have a new book here. You saw this book? One of my disciples, she's writing from her perspective about her and her husband and family's activities. They were the only devotees in the.
Country.
And I asked them to share these teachings about Krishna with other people. And of course, they have to do it very carefully, because in the Middle east, you're not allowed to preach. Not a free country like Russia. What is the name of the country here? I can't even say somewhere in that.
Area.
Because it's dangerous to stay. So they began spreading this message. And now over the period of about four or five years, they have over 2,000 people chanting. She wanted to say how she's a.
Housewife, she's a lady.
But she had plenty of opportunities to preach. So everyone is free to preach. Actually, we have that. You know, we always think, well, I can't preach. I got to study, I got to work, I got to take care of my family. I got to do this, I do that. I'm too young, I'm too old. I'm a woman, I'm a man. I got the sunglasses and wear glasses. Yeah. I mean, we always make some excuses. I'm too heavy. We always paid some kind of reason why I should. So she's a person with her husband, and it was a big adventure for her. And after doing it, she feels so happy about it. She wrote a book just to tell everybody. It's ecstatic to preach. Everybody can do. No matter who you are, there's some way you can participate in congregational preaching. So this book is sponsored by a congregational preaching ministry because it shows some of the ways congregational preaching can fulfill everyone's life.
Potential.
People that can practice this process of bhakti, yoga and meditation from their home. They don't have to live in a temple. This year at Go for Lima with.
Technique.
Already you have it in Bengali. This is amazing. I'm surprised.
You.
Not so much. Joshua taste petrogrades. I'm sure if you buy bug, we'll give you this. Maybe you'll sign it. Yeah. Technique as a guru of the author. I'm not the author. She's my student. Yeah, they were in Moscow. They came here and they gave a seminar. They told me they were coming. I didn't get the report from them yet.
