20020706 || Grushirsky Festival (Part 2) || Samara, Russia #JayapatakaSwamiArchives

A recorded 2002 ISKCON festival talk by Jayapataka Swami in Samara, Russia introducing chanting (Hare Krishna), the spiritual goal of bhakti, and practical teachings from the Bhagavad Gita. The speaker explains karma and rebirth, tells a long illustrative story (royal musician → vulture/parrot → liberation via contact with a devotee’s skull-water), invites participation in all-night kirtan and offers book distribution, and answers a question about vegetarianism and social change.
Sam sa right? There are milk and it's fruit Ukraine. That's Sam. It's Sam it up a. It's it satisfaction. Where? Where you okay? Yamuna Tira Sama sa Sam Hari Rama Samara Sa sa Ram. While we're waiting for the Russian Bhagavad Gita, I'd like to welcome everybody here for this to the ISKCON vill. All during the day we have different programs and especially at night there's dramas, music ended by all night long chanting of Hare Krishna dancing. So you're all invited to be here. A mantra is a song like any other song mantra to. But it's a transcendental song. It's a vibration which awakens the sleeping and dormant spiritual consciousness of a person. And originally we have got spiritual which are able to experience spiritual happiness. But these senses have been covered up by material nature. These bodies are clamped over us like some kind of prison. It is. And we're sentenced in a particular body for a period of time. And with this body we are allowed to enjoy a certain amount. And also we have to suffer. There's a limit each body how much it can do. Just like if you like to sleep a lot, the bare body is better because they can sleep for six months. And there's a limit how much we can sleep as human beings. If you like having someone likes to have sex, then a rabbit or a bird is more able than a human being. They can have multiple times in a day like so. This human form of body is especially meant for awakening our spiritual perception that we get a higher level of happiness. But instead we waste our human life trying to get happiness which even the birds and the rabbits can. But the birds and rabbits are unable to get the spiritual happiness. Many may see that we're chanting Hare Krishna immediately. The devotees who are dressed in these Indian clothes, they're jumping up, they're clapping, they're smiling. But you may not feel the same happening happiness when you hear this chant. But if you try it out and sing and dance, you gradually also start to feel this happiness. And for those that have been chanting for a while, they feel it immediately. Even with a very little bit of chanting, their senses are tuned in for a higher spiritual connection anywhere in the world. Anytime they can disconnect into this mantra and be connected to the supreme source of all pleasure. The name Krishna means all attractive and. And the supreme source of happiness. We were able to this like you have a mobile phone or some kind that you're able to connect in to the source of all happiness. Is that amazing? And what an opportunity. I mean, someone may get a little happiness from their vodka, A little happiness from this thing, a little happiness from that thing. But what if you could get to the ocean of happiness, the source of all happiness? I mean, that's an amazing thing. If you could get that, then you would have all the happiness. If you can imagine every conceivable happiness there is in the world. And then things that you can't even conceive of, unlimited happiness, all in one reservoir. And you know what happens in the material world? Happiness is mixed with suffering, right? Like maybe you take some vodka, you feel good, next morning you got a hangover, maybe you get too much, you start vomiting. So it's like there's always some mix. And it's not like pure happiness. It's a little happiness, a little suffering. But what about pure happiness, Happiness without suffering? How many like happiness with no end and no suffering? Some people, they don't believe it. How is it possible? Well, we're not asking to pay anything. People who have tried this out and they find that by chanting Hare Ka you get access, a connection with this reservoir of ultimate happiness. If you want to know more about it, well, we have a lot of books. You can see our book table. You can. I mean, how this is possible? I said because where spiritual nature and our spiritual self is covered by material body, we'll get much more happiness from the spiritual platform than from the material platform. Unlimited happiness. Happiness you can feel even on a physical level. If you don't believe, come tonight at about 10 o' clock and sing and dance with us until 4 in the morning for six hours. And if you don't feel different, we'll give you all your money back. So many people are coming. Last night we had about two, three, about 5,000 people. People walking all the way over here because they're experiencing something very special. And they're singing and dancing. Sing while chanting Hare Krishna. Even though the newcomers, they haven't really got deep into it yet, still they're experiencing some anyway, even if you don't experience the ultimate happiness. But what's the problem? Anyway, have a good time, sing and dance and you don't lose anything. That's what we're all here for, right? Have a good time singing and dancing. So in this culture from India, these are four songs which awaken our spiritual potential. So we have here a very holy book called Bhagavad Gita. It acts what this is spoken by Krishna about 5,000 years ago. He talks about this material world. Actually, everything we do in the material world has a reaction to it called karma. And we don't necessarily get all the reactions in this life, but we live many lives. We take birth again and. And we get the reactions from all the things we do. Eventually, in one of our lives, maybe seven lifetimes ago, you killed somebody and now you get the reaction and somebody kills you. But for the same reasoning as that. So karma is really nasty because you never know what's going to happen. What's the future hold? Astrologers tell us, give us a little indication what kind of karma reaction we can expect, good or bad or in between. Nobody can say exactly what's going to happen when. So Krishna gave us a way we can get out of this karmic reaction. Peace. We're in a very peaceful place here in the country, so let's talk about peace. My name is Jayapadaka Swami. I come from India. I live at the world headquarters of the Hare Krishna movement in Mayapur Dam, the birthplace of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu Yeshua. And I'm. I'm your servant here. I'm one of the spiritual masters in Iskcon, trying to serve the devotees, to help them to get back to Krishna in this lifetime. I'm sorry that I'm not able to speak Russian yet, but I hope to learn someday. Third year I come to Grossinski festival. I find it very nice. A lot of singing and dancing and association with nice people. The translation for the Sanskrit verse we read. The steadily devoted soul attains unadulterated peace because he offers the result of all activities to me. Whereas a person who is not in union with the divine, who is greedy for the fruits of his labor, becomes entangled. Krishna. We go do visual. So the very profound teaching gives us a window into the overall picture of things. How this supreme being, the supreme person, wishes and he has many energies. He has spiritual energy and spiritual world, the material energy and the material world. And then there's us living entities, the individual souls for those who are in ignorance and don't know about their spiritual existence. They are working under the control of the material nature. And according to their activities, they had to get their reactions. These reactions are given in this life as well as well as after this life, and as well as in the next life. So someone has done a lot of charity, a lot of help to other people. Then they get return for them. They get good results when they want to do things, say somebody is very destructive, they're hurting other people, they're Always causing harm. Then they get put into difficulties, even unexpectedly. So generally people in the material world who know about the material nature, they try to get good karmas so they can get good results materially. But here, this verse says even that is very elementary, that's not very elevated. But actually we should try to go beyond that to the spiritual existence where one can get ultimate peace. Krishna is saying if somebody works and offers the result to God, to Krishna, in other words, Krishna takes all the reactions. Just like a policeman with a woman working for the government. And in the call of their duty, they even have to do very harsh things. Like when they catching a criminal, they may kill the criminal in a fight. But they're not held responsible if they're carrying out their duty responsibly. Similarly, if we're working for Krishna, then he takes responsibility. We don't have to worry about the reaction. Of course, there's a way that we are supposed to act. And Krishna gives guidelines for his people working for him. The people who do that, then they are in peace. They don't have to fear about what's going to happen in the future. They're under Krishna's care. If you look, this is a very wonderful concept. Those who don't work for Ka who are working for gratifying their own senses, if they're doing something good, they're still responsible. They get a good reaction. And if they do something bad, they get the bad reaction. Even to enjoy a good reaction you have to still remain here in the material world. The result of good reaction is money. Being born in a nice family, having a nice beautiful body, having good education and freedom from disease and problem. So like this, this is what one gets for good karmas and for bad karmas. You get the absence of those things, then you get disease, you get the attacks from people, governmental problems, legal problems, health problems, all kinds of problems, short life, mental lack of peace. One gets those reactions. Somebody who is very intelligent, they can see these things and they want to get out of this difficulty. So therefore they start to serve God. And this way they get freed from all these reactions. It's the people. And there are people who are very ignorant. They never think of all these things. For them ignorance is bliss. They're just trying to enjoy life and they don't think about what the results are. So for them, even they're going to die or going to face all these problems. They never bother about it. So for them there's no, no problem. In their mind they feel peaceful because of ignorance. But it's like the cows who are taken to the slaughterhouse. They may feel very peaceful until they're actually brought into the place where their heads are chopped off. So like that we can have peace through ignorance or peace through knowledge. And for the rest of people who have not figured out what life is yet, then they're in anxiety that why aren't I happy, even though I'm trying to be happy? Why all these problems? So this Bhagavad Gita verse is for all those people in the middle who are looking for a reason to why we live. Those who are intelligent, sensitive seekers, who want to really find out what is the truth, who want to get close with nature and God and actually find out the real purpose to life, who want to experience a higher level of peace and happiness than experience before. So for them, this process of working for Ka, working for the supreme is especially easy. They don't have to change what they're doing. They can do the same things, but they change how they're doing it, their consciousness that they're doing it. Instead of doing it selfishly for their physical self, they're doing it for their higher spiritual purpose. And for Krishna. Krishna says, you have to take care of your body. So that's also part of Krishna's service. Krishna also says, you should have recreation, you should have eating, you should have everything, but everything should be done in some other reason. So nothing is actually misunderstood. It's the extremes that are missing, the extremes that actually cause us trouble. This Bhagavad Gita has 18 chapters. Every chapter is a beautiful work of art, a literary jewel, because the gloss. All great thinkers in the world, they have read this Bhagavad Gita. When I first came to Russia, I was told recently by one historian that Ekaterina II and the Patriarch of the Orthodox Christian Church, they had it translated into Russian. And the Patriarch of the Orthodox Church says that this is very good for Christians to develop in their spiritual devotion to God. Many centuries ago, I don't know what they say now, but at that time they studied Bhagavad Gita and that was their conclusion. So I'm sure that was already. And actually the Church helped to it translated. I don't know where that original copy of Bhagavad Gita is, but that would be interesting to locate. So this Bhagavad Gita, every chapter has a deep wisdom to it and a slightly different presentation Bhagavad. And by reading even one chapter of the Bhagavad Gita you get some very deep spiritual benefit. Now Lord Shiva was asked by Mother Parvati what is the special glories of this fifth chapter that we read from today? How can I understand that this fifth chapter is so great? So there's a very mystical story. How many hear like story? Okay, so you want to hear this story. Okay, it's about a musician. I guess that's appropriate for a Grusinski festival. There are a lot of musicians here. Almost everybody is a musician one way or another. So there was a family of devotees and they had a son. But the son was not interested in devotion. He was interested in music. He wanted to be a famous musician, rich, famous, successful. So he spent a lot of energy in doing his musical studies and he became very expert musician. Gradually he rose in society and his popularity. He was married, he was happy, he was quite successful. Finally the king, the emperor of that country became aware of because it's an ancient story of this musician and invited him to perform at some royal function. He liked the musician. He invited him again and again. One day he offered, may I give you the honor as royal musician of the empire? That's like the top honor, Mr. Moses. No, no, it was an accident, you know, it's very hard. I never meant it. I said, I love only you. But somehow this lady, she tricked me. And the senses are weak. I promise it'll never happen again. It was just a trap, you know, I was tricked. What happened again and again and again. So the wife was getting very angry. This is too much, you know, it's very. Then she thought, okay, I'll get back at my husband. He's visiting other girl, visit another man. Then he'll see that how heavy it is and he'll come back to me. She made a plan like that wasn't very well conceived plan. She didn't realize how entangling life is. So she also went with someone and let the husband know too, you know, it was for that purpose. Then the husband, he went to her, said, how is it you're doing this? How are you? You're doing it? I'm doing it. You do it. You don't say anything. Why if I do it, what's the problem? You're a woman, you're not supposed to do these. What man are you supposed to do it? Okay, so let's agree. Either of us won't do it. The problem was now the wife got attached to the other man. Something she never expected. Well, that were many years ago. She couldn't stop. She fell in love. So now Big problems in the family. The husband was creating big problem trying to stop her. She saw this husband as big obstacle for my happiness. Happier with this other man. His husband is creating problems for me. So one night, the husband was asleep. She killed him, cut his body in little pieces and threw the body in some little or some well, where the fish will eat it. The king was asking, where is my royal musician? Send for the wife, send a message. I don't know. He went out on a program, never came back shelf. So she was granted the widow pension. The husband didn't come back for a couple years. So when the husband died. When the husband died, the Yamadutas took his subtle body and soul out from the dead body. Every night when we dream, we go out of our body and our dream body, right? It's like an astral body tells us we have three bodies, three forms. One physical form, one psychic form and the original spiritual form. So the spirit is locked to the mind in the subtle form. And then temporarily it stays with one body for one lifetime. When the life is over, then the soul and the subtle body go on to the next life. If one is conscious of God, when they leave their body, they go right back to the spiritual world. If they're very good people, then they nearly go and take a higher birth and a higher planet, some heavenly planet. If they're sinful people, they go for judgment at the court of Karma and Yamaloku. And then they are given some punishment and then they given a new birth. So where do you think this husband went? You're correct. Yamaloku is a bad guy. So the Yamadutas dragged him out of his dead, shattered body and took him to the subtle planet of Karma, the messengers of death. Last night there was a drama and you saw Yamadutas from the Lord of Death. They came and they were smashing that poor guy with a skeleton body. What was the name of the guy with a skeleton body? He's a famous Russian flag, was getting beaten up by the young. But he was saved by the Vishnu Duttas, messengers of Krishna, because he had bought some books on Sankhyatan, another holy book. So. So anyway, that was last night. Today this guy, he didn't buy any Bhagavad Gitas. He's in big trouble now. That was the count of Bhagavad Gita. He was drank before. Yamaraj said, you have committed so much adultery, you have cheated so many people. You rose very high in society, but you're only looking how to enjoy your senses. You never thought how to use it for a higher purpose. You never helped other people. You never serve God. You just enjoyed and created so much bad karma. So since you don't have any spiritual aspiration, you don't deserve to be a human being. Human life is meant for those who want to achieve some spiritual perfection. So your next life, you'll become a vulture who eats the dead bodies. Bird, bird. That dead body fly very high, but looks next he taken off. He was became a vulture flying looking for the dead bodies. From royal musician to high flying vulture, high society to high flying. Flying only to look down. Where is the dead? Meanwhile, what happened to his wife? For her bad karmas, she was living outcome. No one knew. She was a sinful lady they respected. Oh, the dear widow of the royal musician. A very pious lady, having her private alliances. She was a lady of bad repute. She is a widow. She could have engaged in spiritual activities, but instead she was just enjoying life. She didn't marry again, but she wanted to keep the famous royal widow of the royal musician. She developed some very bad disease. She got piles and hemorrhoids. She couldn't sit down, she couldn't lie down. She felt so much pain. Passing stool every day was like torture. Finally she died bleeding from the anus. They were also there of death. They took her a subtle body to the court of gave her a program for punishment for your next life. After you go through this program, you know you don't deserve to be a human being. Because you don't also you didn't do anything spiritual in your life. You wanted to put on a big show that you were a pious lady. But you're all doing sinful things. So now your next birth, you can become a female parent. You look really nice, but you have a bird brain. Bird brain, not very intelligent, right? So she took birth as a female parrot. I don't know what parrot. So maybe that's more like a chicken. But anyway, whatever parrots tell me. So she's flying around around enjoying life, eating fruits. Why the karma? By faith, one day the former husband was flying before the dead bodies. He sees his parrot flying from one tree to the the next. And he suddenly realizes that was my wife in the previous life, swoops down, grabs her. You killed me when I sleep, you nonsense rascal. Now I got you. Now I'm gonna teach you a lesson. But I'm gonna let you not die instantly. I'm gonna kill you gradually so you suffer more you apart bit by bit. So you can really suffer the Pain. So he started ripping at her with his talons. She's screaming and he's gradually ripping her in pieces. Not too much, just to cause maximum pain. So he was looking for somewhere to drink. And he saw in the forest there was one skeleton in the open clearing. And there was the dry skull upside down. And inside that there was rainwater. Oh, nectar water. I mean, for vulture. That's like, what could be better, Amrita. Actually, he was right. But anyway, we'll find out later. He went and sat on a skull, drink a little water, and the parrot is screaming. She's suffering. She wants to get free from this. In the forest, there was a tribal hunter. He aimed his arrow. It penetrated both the parrot and the vulture, killing them instantly. The birds fell into the water of the skull and wow, it sounds like a bird. And then the Yamaduttas came again. The messengers of the Lord of Death to take their subtle body back to see what was the next plan for them. The bookkeeper, the accountant, said, these people have not suffered enough yet. They didn't learn anything. Even as a bird. He wants vengeance against his wife Smoritza, that of Telesterville. Before they can be born as humans again, they have to suffer a lot more. Lord of karmic decisions. He has a higher vision from Yumania. He said, no boat. Both of these two are free. They're going back to the spiritual world. The man who has surprised. Spiritual world? How is it possible? Sir, I think you better check because I'm really a bad guy. I mean, I don't how I could possibly go to the spiritual world. You see, there were the bones in the skull. When you died, you fell into the water of the skull. That bones and skull were from a devotee who every day used to read the fifth chapter, Bhagavad giving. Because of that, his whole body, even his bones, became pure. So the water in his skull was like Charnamrita. It was like Ganges water or something. Nectar from Bhagavad Gita. Reader, as you die touching that water, you are free from all your karma. No more. Karma means you are free from the material world. You are free to go back place of eternal life. This material world is a prison house for those who have been doing bad karma. Now you have no karma. So you don't have to stay here anymore. So you can imagine if the bones of somebody who reads the fifth chapter, Bhagavad Gita are so holy. What to speak of the person who's actually reading the fifth chapter. This chapter we Read from is a very powerful chapter. It can actually change your entire existence. So this Bhagavad Gita is a very transcendental book literature. It's spoken by Krishna himself. Every chapter is filled with spiritual. How many of you have read Bhagavad Gita? How many would like to get a copy of Bhagavad Gita? How many have a copy or like to get one? You can get over at the book table if you can't even afford. Just copy down the verses and read the verses every day. Just by reading the verses you can get so much spiritual benefit. So like this. A lot of things we can learn from this story. Our success in this life does not really show us what's going to happen in the next. Someone may be rich and famous and next lifetime become an animal. If we don't do anything for our spiritual progress, then it's very dangerous. The law of karma. Even a little devotional service stays in our record permanently. Actually even by you just sitting here for this Bhagavad Gita class. This has gone in your permanent record of special spiritual credits. That even a little practice of Bhakti Yoga can save one from the greatest dangers. Such dangers are like being born as an animal. There was someone who just had a devotee over to the house as the guest ones. That's the only thing they did their whole life. And because of that they were saved from some very bad karmas. Actually got a good birth and a next life and a good wife. They still were poor because they didn't have. It wasn't very much that they did. Then they found out about it and they did some more spiritual activities and they reversed their karma and became rich. They were children also and the. So these kind of things normally people get attracted to because they want good karma. But the real point is to get out of this whole cycle of karma. The 11th day of the lunar cycle. Today is a very good day for chanting Hare Krishna. Hare Krishna for hearing classes. In fact, if you stay up tonight singing and dancing, you get a special benefit. Who's gonna stay out tonight? Who's gonna come here with us tonight and sing and dance all night? What a better way way of spending At Rusinski festivals sing and dance. Anything you do spiritual today get 100 times benefit. I don't know if the Volga is a holy river, but otherwise if you bathe in a holy river, you also get multiple benefits. So today we learned. What did we learn? We learned that if we offer all our activities to Ka then We can live in peace and he takes responsibility for us. We learned that if we do activities simply for the karmic result out of our personal greed then we have to suffer all the reactions. We also learned that Bhagavad Gita is a very holy book and if we read from the Bhagavad Gita that will give us immense spiritual benefit and save us from so much material suffering. Okay, here one person has stepped forward to get Bhagavad Gita who is the proud owner of this Bhagavad Gita. Let's give him an applause. Bacteroma. You know Roma actually is the name of Lakshmi Lakshmi Devi, Goddess of fortune. So it looks like this life you're going to have good fortune. One of Krishna's names is Roma Patti. Excited. Anyone else want a Baku? Anyone has a question, he has a question. And yes, yes the question is Srila Prabhupada once said that if people will continue to eat meat then will be many wars and other problems. So what can we do? Because now we see so many wars. So what can we do to save the situation? How to make many people vegetarians? The question. Well, it's a good question, a very good question. People understood. There are many people who have some consciousness and if they are explain the dangers and the difficulties personal collectively for eating meat they also decide that better to have vegetarian alternatives. That's why we're trying. We also if you can give people nice vegetarian meals they find it so tasty that they'll see that actually there's no need of eating meat. How many of you have tried Hare Krishna vegetarian meal? You like it? How many likes per salad? So you should give to all your friends. See the positive alternative for each I ask you, what about if we take 2 then 15 every 13 instead of 40 which is sweeter? This one. It should be syrup because it's cherry. Look at that one. Looks all better over there. He's hiding the good ones. What's this? Look over here. Look under there. Check those out. Here is rock. Put in separate bag. Shivas Ram Rama it.
