A spoken reminiscence by Sam Ram (from the Jayapataka Swami archives) describing multiple personal memories of Śrīla Prabhupāda: surprise temple appearances and darśana in Mayapur, detailed descriptions of Prabhupāda's habits (how he drank water, his treatment of devotees), large public receptions (notably a 1969 airport reception in Boston with media coverage), anecdotes about temple buildings and construction in the early 1970s (including a cost-saving calculation of ~5,472 rupees), and episodes showing Prabhupāda's direct, sometimes surprising instructions to devotees. The tone is devotional, anecdotal, and historical within ISKCON community life.

Sam Ram. Oh my God. Now just remember when I was reading the Pastimes of Bomb May when he was ill in 1977, so he wasn't coming down often for class. And then he suddenly disappeared in the temple room and it was a surprise for everybody and he sat down on his Vyasa sound. So then the word spread throughout him. Not the community. The Prabhupada is in the temple. Devotees just like drop whatever they were doing and started running madly over and all assembled in the temple in the Prabhupada Gila Shah class. So then he said that he was do some Darshans particular time. Some days he comes like to give a class and he prayed to Ka to bless everyone, that they would be strong in their Ka consciousness and that they would be and that they would preach. So it was interesting. I was in Bombay when I read this pastime and I see how we run into the temple. His spontaneous enthusiasm, even though he wasn't well. But he always wanted to preach. He always wanted to share what he had knew about Ka with others. And he wanted to be available for helping devotees. That may be the suffering help from him. So this was the kind of arrangement that was being made. We were in Mayapur Prabhupada. We would come to Mayapur for reception. And in those days there wasn't so many temples. There was like this kind of temple on one side and then the birthplace of La Chaitanya. And then there was the Hulur Ghat. So now there's a few more temples. 40 Mars temple. But then we could just kind of just see the road all the way. So there'd be a lookout watching to see one of the problems. We didn't have walkie talkies and mobile phones not working anyway. So Sindh somebody would be in a spot and he turned the siren on and then people started blowing firecrackers on. And then Prabhupada come to the gate and everyone would throw flowers and he ate, gave him another time he didn't have an elephant, otherwise it would be nice to pick it up. Elephant reception. And then Srila Prabhupada come to the temple and he would thank Darshana Ramana. Sometimes he'd circumambangulate the babies three times. Whenever he'd stop at the bell, then he'd ring the bell and he died. He waved to the devotees to jump and so then we started jumping. He would always be very, very happy when he came to my tomato when he went up to his room after reception and class. And he sat down at his table, his desk, and then he had a golden goblet. So he drank a glass of water. You know, Prabhupada would drink water. He would drink without touching. When you touch the cup, then the cup is contaminated. The mouth is considered diverting the cup. Cup's contaminated, their hands contaminated. So if you're working in the desk and looking at scriptures and things, you don't want to get your hands contaminated. To wash the hand before you touch any scripture. Sewer drink, pouring it like a drop into the mouth without touching the glass. That was the system you would use for the drink. So he sat down and he drank water. It's kind of very beautiful to see him drink water. You can practice. You have to have a properly shaped goblet or properly shaved glass. Sometimes you see this kind of glass like this. So those don't work, pour off the site. So you took a big sip of water, taste the water, and then he leaned back. How wonderful. Living in Mayapur, or dining Mayanpur, that's all it says. Living in the spiritual world. And if you die here, you go back to the spiritual. Those receptions in Miracle are always something amazing. Probably the most impressive reception. The thing that I think back that Bukhar had the most impact was in 1969 when Srila Prabhupada was coming back from India. He had gone to India and there was. He had a heart problem. So there was a worry that whether he was going to come back and what's going to happen. So when he came back, he was landing in Boston in the United States. So that's how I was a temple president in Montreal or Toronto. I forget exactly Toronto. But anyway, he came down from Canada and all over the east coast, from New York, different places, Washington, whatever. They all came and assembled at Boston to receive Brahmas. So there was about 150 devotees at the airport in those days. That was a lot of devotees. And they were so enthusiastic to receive all the time they had. It seems that before you could see into the customs area, but they put some kind of a makeshift in front of the windows. They put some screens so you could see under the screen and you could see over this hand into a screen with some footings to block the people from seeing. So there may be about 6ft high, 6 inches off the ground, less than 2 meters high. So the devotees were chanting and dancing outside. And there was a lot of media coverage there. There was newspapers and television there. And the news came. The Prabhupada has Come into the enclosure and he's inside there. So the devotees are chanting and dancing. And all of a sudden somebody said this a Prabhupada's shoes. And they're all dancing. And this when all Sam Prabhupada listed as a bee thing above the screen there, you can see probably exploded. And it was just like I saw pictures that literally saw people that looked like those Kazakh dancers in Russia or something. They were like three feet off the ground. They were so high off the ground. And then one devotee somehow, in the enthusiasm, I don't know, he hit himself or he hit somebody. One devotee got cut on the head with a car towel. And one of the newspaper people noticed he's jumping up and down and so much ecstasy, guys bleeding from the head. He's totally oblivious. He doesn't know he's feel anything. And he puts in the newspaper, you know, wow, these people are in ecstasy. That proved it to him. You see jumping half smiling or fluffing. And then a few minutes later, Prabhupada came through the exit door. And when he came through, everybody boom. And just hit the deck. Silence. And all the other people staying there were the newspapers, the media people. So that Prabhupada sat down on the side and one of the airport chairs. And then my guru pushed right in the airport and everybody had a garland. So they all came up and offered a garland. So there's so many garlands. But literally it was like a vast puja or something. The garlands came right up to his head and he couldn't see me. I'd take it off, you know, put it on the side, put it on the side so this would happen I don't know how many times. So I even showed these people never saw anything like this before. And I was just like watching what's going on here. And then the rooster, the television said that I could do an interview. So then they gave Prabhupada home. And I remember Prabhupada. I remember all the things he said. One of the things he said was the spiritual master is the representative of God. Therefore he is received and he is treated disliked. One would treat God. But if the spiritual master thinks that the guru thinks that he's God, he is not God. G O D He's opposite. He's dog. Do the birth God look backwards. He got dog. Then there was another reception, only went to the temple. This was an amazing temple. I don't know if they purchased it or rented it, but it was formerly a funeral home. So we got it real cheap and thought it was a great deal. So they had a temple room and they took Prabhupada down in the basement and there was a lift that they used were lifting the coffins up and down to the basement where they had set up ISKCON press. I mean I was just a temple you probably wouldn't accept. They told you that was always interesting the boys that they cured them throughout the building and hoped that they had all the sub entities liberated. And so we were there probably when a tour saw the press in the basement and we were going to Basque. That time our BBT hadn't been formed yet. So it was ISKCON press. There were a few publications and any books about. And then propagated the other class in the temple room. Then they had to prepare a huge feast for chakra. Very big train, big train. So many preparations. So they gave their served drop inside his own little area that he had. Then they had arranged that he would stay in a quiet resort. It was winter outside, it was snowing, everything was white. So I remember I went and robbed. I went in the car and we all made the ride off. And suddenly I remember I said wahat the shot upstairs. So I went running upstairs and there was one senior devotee named Swami. He was there taking some of the posadam. So then I could remember also. All of a sudden the Punjarikin walked and hey, what are you doing? Transfer the plate to Gary. Mahapa said we had to be a little Lucas because if you're waiting for the formalities, civilized is normal. That was a little bit memorable. Of course I was watching the Maya prayer. I got to do the foot bathing and iq. So this two things I've seen videos probably not seen on Prabhupada ipod in Los Angeles just depending fortnite maybe 6 years ago I happened to be in Los Angeles for the Prabhupada festival. They have and they had this surprise visit of Srila Prabhupada Ali was in pulled up and suddenly they announced Prabhupada. They had taken the Prabhupada deity and brought him up in the Dimazi. So then there was a king and then they had a big kirtan and they brought karampa and brought up to the king. We're living that moment. Please don't let Shiva go. Morning walks, maybe different places. Have you looked with the ladies? Then we were walking and he came back and came as a basis to the babies. And he asked the head Kujari asked her that, so are the deeds happening? So then the Pujaria didn't know what I was saying, looked a little bit startled over that question. And then Prabhupada said, you should know in a personal sermon under meetings, you should know what the meanings happen. That was because of your lights. And we worship deities and maybe make an offense to the Devi. But the Devis don't often complain. We're not so fear to them. Sometimes we've heard of our great devotees like Sananda Goswami. He was preparing chapati, his friends deities or. So then the deity started to complain. Why don't you give me a little salt? He said, just don't complain. Pretty soon you want solved. Those are very rare moments to have this kind of exchange for the meeting. But with the spiritual master. Then Srila Prabhupada, he was articulated. He would suddenly do something which surprised everybody. He would ask questions. Just like in my opinion, he was telling the devotees he wanted his milk hot. They brought up the milk and it wasn't hot enough. It was just warm. He said, well, how happy you wanted children. I wanted as hard as possible. So then brought back the milk. But it was just like boiling, you know, it was like boiling hot. So you went to touch the glass and it was like so hot it burnt your hands. It's too hot. He said to bring it as hot as possible. I said, yes, but not impossible. And sometimes Suda Prabhupada can be as heavy as it'll be very soft, just like a flower, you know, like in Mayapur. We were constructing a long building which is known as the truck, I guess house. Sadly, the longest building in West Bengal was a big man. So he had already constructed. Prabhupada suddenly said, why are you building a seven foot high tent? Like you're wasting to fill that hole with dirt. It'll be a big waste. So much dirt, so much requirement of iron. So you just put the slab and put a trap door in the floor. And then you can have a stair, have a ladder going down into the ground, mezzanine. Use it for something. So then I said to Srila Prabhupada that well, I don't know how useful that would be because you're coming up and down the stairway. Could put a door in the scientific hole in the wall. Put a door in and have a basement listening for. And then Prabhupada knows that to break a hole in my wall. So when he said break a hole to break a hole in your head. Break your head. What is it was didn't like the idea of breaking something once you built it, it's there, no breaking. My ancestral problem. It would be so heavy. Sometimes I was just thinking, oh, what did I say wrong? But then I was really convinced that this was more useful to have a door if you're walking. And then I said, well, Shula Prabhupada. Then I understood, well, what is Prabhupada's point? He doesn't want to lose. He doesn't want to destroy Krishna's property. I said, what if it actually works out cheaper to put a hole in the wall in a doorway than building a stairway and a shaft door? Well, if you can prove to me that it's cheaper, that it's less expensive, then I will accept it. But meanwhile, the work goes on. And so probably the work was running full speed and every hour they're building one more new Jap door. And so those days we didn't have calculators, we didn't have computers. All I had was a slide rule. It was like 1972 or something. And there was a slide roll, calculating every brick, how big the doorway would be, what the comparative cost of both with me and how many cubic feet of I could say. I had to calculate the whole thing over prorated over the whole building. I came running back to Srila Prabhupada like four hours later after having figured it all out, I said, srila Prabhupada. We saved 5,000, 472 rupees. Srila Krab said, okay, look at that. All right, stop the ladies and move from now on. So we had seven rooms that were already built with the trap doors. So it was really about the things, especially building the building. He was paying for the village, so it makes sense that he was involved in it. Kind of satisfying. Remember one time the workers in that same building were always hours on the top floor. The workers decided to go on strike. They know the work more than pay raise on strike and platinum. So Prabhupada said, okay, I want all the swamis. They're putting a slab down. It means they're laying concrete. You have to finish the concrete at one go. Otherwise if you don't, then it becomes very weak. You have to at least take it up to the wall, which is holding the whole concrete up. Otherwise, in the middle of the room, if the leaves start hitting and they crack, once it sets again, we'll join it again, just take it to the wall so we're halfway through it. For some reason the workers, they just went on strike and Prabhupatullah swam means everybody to go. And he personally was super. Thank you for watching our videos. Be sure to subscribe.
