2003 || Bhagavad Gītā Class (18.42) || WB, India #JayapatakaSwamiArchives

Transcript of a recorded Bhagavad Gītā class (YouTube) led by Jaya Pataka Swami with contributions from Abraham and Sundar. The speakers discuss the nine natural qualities of a Brahmana listed in Bhagavad Gita 18.42—peacefulness, self-control, austerity, purity, tolerance/forgiveness, honesty, knowledge, wisdom, and religiosity—illustrating each with scriptural citations, stories (Lord Chaitanya, Gopis, Arjuna, Yudhisthira), practical devotional advice, and personal anecdotes about bhakti practices.
Sam Pap.
Bakam Sam let the Russians sit around so like we have.
We.
Talk about the 10 offenses to the Holy Name that God Bhagwad described each of them and discussed a little bit with all that. So they nine qualities of the Bahman I mentioned in the Bhagavad Gita. We'll do that and have each speaker speak something about it different quality and we'll have question answers But I have to visit some houses of the donors organizers after about 45 minutes. Chapter 18 text 42 translation word by word Sama we do the translation second peacefulness Sama is peacefulness Dhamma, self control Kappa austerity Socha purity chanting Nalarim honesty Eva certainly Chak Hand Gana knowledge, religiousness, Brahma, Ava Brahmara Karma born of his own nature peacefulness, self control, austerity, purity, tolerance, honesty, knowledge, wisdom and religiousness. These are the natural qualities by which the Brahmanas work to sum up his peacefulness Peacefulness. We know that there's peacefulness by being in some place in a mode of goodness like in some forest or mountain or somewhere. No disturbance type place, anything will give this very peaceful. We know that even if somebody is trying to meditate in such a place with a fireman named you, he saw that the mind may be very disturbed. The mind may be very agitated to want to be somewhere else. I remember I knew some people used to live in their country and the weekdays within the weekend and come into the city. They live in Marin county in California, north of San Francisco. On the weekends they come in to go to the rock and roll concert and to be with all the city activities Karmic. So the mind was Facebook in another country. When Lord Chaitanya saw the yogi who came to the house of Shivas who was just wearing the bark of trees and he was carrying his Kamandalu and his danga and he had his hair matted. Then Lord Chaitanya said what are you doing? He said I'm doing self realization. I'm trying to realize myself. I practice yoga, eats roots and roots in the forest. Then he said, well, what are you doing in the big city then? No fruits and roots here.
You're coming here because you want to.
Be more applied and you want to be honored. So like this, these devotees who are here, they're much more peaceful than you are. They're much more spiritual because they simply want to please the Lord. So you're not qualified to be here at Ms. Kirchhoff then that yogi, he was feeling so Bad. And then he started changed his heart and said actually I'm so blessed because I could be part of what Chaitanya's girtak is watching for so much half hour or something and watch the Kirta. And whatever Lord Chaitanya said. It's true that actually, you know, I'm very lonely in the forest. And I was born there. So I left the forest and come here. But I can see that these devotees, they're much more peaceful, they're much more pure. So I wonder why he said, Lord Chitanya gave me so much mercy to allow me even I've seen this kirta. Then he started crying. The Lord Shaitanya was so merciful to me. Allow me to see the kirta. And I'm so fallen. I'm so unqualified. But I can still see the kirta. So like this. Then Lord Shaitanya stopped in Kirta and said, where's a yogi? He's outside. Bring him in. Now he can come in because he has become humble. Therefore he could come in. So being humble is another way of achieving peacefulness. There's a verse by Lord Chaitanya says Mukti Bhakti Siddhi Kami Sakri Asanto Kishta Bhaktan is Kama Taishanto. And those who desire liberation, mystic power and sense gratification. They are all lacking peace. Krishna Bhakta is come or Krishna devotee does everything for Krishna. He may have money, may have business.
May have so many things.
But if he does everything for Ka then he becomes peaceful. Because he doesn't have any personal desire. All the desires are dovetailed to Krishna. The other people. Even though they may appear very renounced. But because they're having some independent desire separate from Ka desire. Therefore they are not feeling satisfied. They're feeling unfulfilled. Therefore they lack peace. Another idea of sum up is a kind of equality. Not seeing anybody as a friend or enemy. Seeing everybody in a favorable way. Not everything, anybody. This also mentioned the 12th chapter Bhagavad Gita. Equanimity to fame and infamy.
Praise and criticism.
If one doesn't develop that kind of.
Nature.
Then they'll always be unhappy. One thing is some people, they're suffering so much. But then they're thinking they're disliked which is being satisfied with the little things. Fish are so kind. Today we have a mount for Sodom. This is so kind. Today I'm feeling healthier or could be much worse. Some of this seeing things in a proper attitude of appreciation.
To Krishna.
Facilitates our being peaceful. Later the quality of color and there that also helps. But the peacefulness is such an important thing. Prabhupada said, if you're not peaceful, how can you be happy? People want to be happy, but they don't have peace. Where is the question of happiness and peacefulness? This is a prerequisite happiness. Actually the only way you can really achieve peacefulness is by doing everything for Krishna. As soon as you do something for your so called personal physical interest, then maybe something's not going to be good enough. Not enough Quality is not good enough. Quantity is not enough. Somebody else has more. I should also have that much sunrise. We always get mentally frustrated. So peacefulness comes from you can say having an outlook which is very Ka conscious. The remasters become peaceful. Even if we in the midst of a battlefield. A Krishna told our general, you can be peaceful. We read about the war going on, all this, the war going on in Iraq. And it's some famous general said, war is hell. They're just people trying to kill each other. So Kurukshetra, they have this huge now it's all like high tech satellite guided bombs and things. But because there are some suicide bombers, there's snipers, there's the ground troops. So when there's a personal fighting, then it's more dangerous and it's more unpredictable. So what this began Kurdisheka was all personal combat. Millions of people fighting with each other, hand to hand, arrow to arrow, sword to sword. So what could be more tension? You don't know where the next arrow is going to come first. But Krishna told Arjuna, you can be peaceful in this battlefield because you do everything for me. You see yourself only as my instrument. But we have to develop that attitude that we do everything for Ka. The next it will become peaceful. So that's the few realizations about Samoa, which is Samadhi. Then we have Dhamma, which is self control. And his Holiness Kavichandra Maharaj was one of the most self controlled people, doesn't need anything. He can share some advice how we can achieve self control. What does it mean?
It's just like if you're riding a.
Horse or a chariot.
Gopala, here's the example that's from the Upanishad.
I give.
When I was young in America all the television shows and movies were about the previous America, the cowboys and all that. So there was always a.
The horse.
Carriages at the stage coach would they.
Have three or four, six horses and.
They would be inside would be the beautiful girl coming From New York City, all dressed up out in the middle of the desert or something. And then the demons would attack and shoot the driver. Then the horses would take off in fear. The driver would be laying like this and his helper. And inside the people were panicking, and it was bouncing and it was heading always, you know, towards the cliff or something. And then the Lone Ranger would come or Roy Rogers or whoever it was. And on his faster horse, he would catch up, then he would jump on. He would get hold of all the reins. It was very dangerous. And finally save the day at the last minute. And the girl would fall in love with him. But it's like that. The senses are like the horses. We have that picture in the Bhagavad Gita, the nose and the ears, the eyes. Yeah, they don't have those anymore now. It's always cars and trucks and motorcycles. No, they had only Indian movies and only Indian movies. I don't know if the new ones have that. The new ones, anyway, whatever. If anyone has seen it. If you've ridden a horse, that example is given also in the Bhagavad. You have to control the horse. The mouth is very tender, and when that thing is in the mouth, you can control it. But if the horse hits it in his teeth, then he runs away and you can't control him anymore. The senses are always trying to run wild. And the mind is the lord of the senses, called the common sense. And the mind is supposed to be controlled by the intelligence, almost spiritual. So we get intelligence from higher authorities. And then it's supposed to tell the senses, look over here. Go look at the deities. Listen to the kirtan chant, and you don't need so much or whatever. But when that intelligence is not controlling the mind, then the senses lead the mind all over the place. Bhagavatam also gives example, like a man has six wives or five wives. You know, anyone who has so many wives in Africa, Many men, the chiefs, they have sometimes five, six wives, right? Some of the devotees are fathered, as you know, they have like 30 brothers and sisters. So he comes home, and the one wife, you know, she says, take me out to a restaurant. Another one is saying, take me for sex. Another one is saying, you know, something else. And they're pulling all the different senses, are dragging us in different directions. So most people are like that. They're just being dragged by their senses. They smell something cooking as they pass by on the street. They have to stop and eat it. They see some girl, they have to go Chasing after and or a boy. They hear some music, they have to go in the cinema house or something. The senses are dragging them everywhere, just like. Like a fish on a hook. But if they get intelligence, intelligence means spiritual, ultimately the super sense, then the real thing is to engage the senses proper, keep them busy. That's the Bhakti yoga process. The tongue is chanting the names of the Lord and taking prasadam tasting. When we want to taste, taste Prasadam, then we have to learn how to not taste prasadam too much. We eat too much and become Sanskar edification. The eyes. We look at the beautiful form of the Lord, look at the scripture and read it. The ears hear the discussions of the Lord. He knows smells, the incense offered to.
The Lord like that. The touch.
The body of the Lord. The touch. The devotees engaging in active service, that's the bhakti. Other yogis, they want to stop, you know, don't see anything, don't hear anything, don't smell anything. But the mind will carry on anyway. It's not natural because the soul is sentient. So the natural thing is to engage the senses. Really. Sense control means to keep busy all the time. In devotional service with all the senses, preaching is very good if it engages all the senses. You have to speak, look at people, you have to think. Chanting engages the ear, the tongue, the mind. And we stay engaged with needs, keep the sense of touch. In this way we feel this practice is perfect. And it's important. If we let the senses go wild and they just drag us off, we.
Don'T know where they're going to go.
On that original, they had one camel. Camels have, I guess, very powerful senses. I don't know. And this camel, the devotees who went to buy the camel, they didn't know the art of camel purchasing, so they got a bad crazy camel. You know, the smart guys wouldn't buy that camel. They know how to recognize it. But this camel would be pulling the cart along. But if anything happened, the camel would.
Freak out and just run across the.
Field and the cart would go flying, the driver go flying. So then maybe all camels, the elephant ad also would go crazy and sometimes get really wild. Then the driver would have to talk to her in elephant talk window for like a half an hour and finding cool down. So that when the mind is crazy, we have to pacify it by the holy name Sriman Bhagavatam Pastime. She's worshipanya. Somehow when they're engaged, senses take. When we're hungry, we take prasada. But Many are experiencing here. I heard the results of taking too much prasada. And then the mind tells you you have to eat more. You have to eat more. Eat more, eat more, eat more, eat more. You're going to waste away. And then you get more and more. The mind is crazy, the senses are crazy. The tongue has no limit how much. So we should utilize that limit in chanting. You know that limitless ability of the tongue. Taste the nectar of the holy name. It'll always be good anyway. That's the prominent control. Even somebody who offers him some sense gratification, he says no sense control. Peaceful then you can be peaceful. If we let the senses drag us around all the time, then everyone's experience, it's very disturbing.
Ready?
What's next? That's a good one for you. Suffering fire, burning up.
Tapa or austerity.
Can have two effects on a living entity. One reality is that austerity can harden the heart.
We see an example of Ramikashimu with.
His desire to control the entire universe. He stood on one leg for such.
A long period of time.
He gained so many different ant like associates around him, put his life on his bones. He received certain benedictions and had the first heart transplant on a doorstep seen in history. This is what happens when we try and approach the supreme with a desire to enjoy separately. Try to convince or to become the Supreme. So austerity is a very important feature in Ka Consciousness. Because this surrender means to soften the heart. You may know to make steel, they heat steel, they heat it and cool it. Heat it and cool it. The austerities that we make perform in Ka Consciousness mean to develop the heart in loving surrender to the spiritual master and Krishna's mission. Because by the performance of this loving relationship there is realization. You may remember when Srila Prabhupada was in the streets of Delhi distributing Bhakti Gaudi magazine in the heat of the sun, he would. He would pass out due to the austerity and service to his spiritual master.
And even on one occasion Srila Prabhupada was gored by some bull. The disciple.
In the forward steps in the mission, your spiritual master may experience so many hardships. But the point being is that whatever step we take towards the Supreme Lord and his perfect servitors, the Supreme Lord will take unlimited steps towards us. We see in the example of the Gopis in Vrindavan performing so many austerities to actually remember Ka. The position which they had developed was actually purchased the Lord himself. When Lord Krishna left Vrindavan he manifested an Apraka feature where he was simply always with him in separation. Udava was sent by Lord Krishna from Gorkha to deliver one of his famous letters of how to remind the Gopis that we are always together. Utiba was actually disciple and he was very expert at transmitting this letter for the benefit of the Gopis because it could not be read because Krishna's tears had washed all the writing off. And he presented Krishna's instructions in their life that actually you may be experiencing the austerity of not having my physical aspect association, but actually we are always together. Sri Prabhupada the Chetpandi Charmita describes this exchange between Urba and the Gopis. Sri Prabhupada used the term that a devotee can never be away from his beloved Lord. Srila Prabhupada said when devotee is in the material world that he appears fair is that the devotee sees the Lord who is intrinsically integrated with his energies. Udava was reminding the Gopis that Lord Krishna was reminding the Gopis that we are always together. So we may see in our different services we've been performing different austerities. Whether it's in the preaching work, DG worship communication work, book seduction that Ka within provides intelligence of how to always help us remember how we are always with Him. Ramana Naroya Lord Chaitanya mentioned to Ramananda Roy how when a pure devotee looks at the material energy, he does not see things ending at that point. He sees the energetic source behind these energies. So by the process of performing austerities.
In Christian service, first of all, we.
Will not only experience that complete relationship, that complete camaraderie with the Lord in all situations, but as Jesus said, to be in the world, but that of the world. Even in our neophyte position, we can actually come in contact with our eternal relationship with the Lord even while we have these material bodies. So the process of Krishna consciousness Srila Prabhupada designated is to put the rod in the fire. That actually the process of using our mind body in words in service to the mission of the Lord will purify our consciousness. So the austerities that we may perform become a great delight because they help us become mindful of these eternal relationships.
And we're so fortunate to be given.
The opportunity by Srila Prabhupada's mercy to distribute these relationships to others.
I think the austerity is the wealth of the Brahmanas. And Krishna says in one verse that austerity and myself are Non different. But austerity is. There's austerity in the mode of goodness, austerity in the mode of passion and austerity in the mode of ignorance. If we want to seek out austerity in the motive goodness, austerity to speech means to speak sweetly, speak nicely. Posterity of the body means to offer basis and respect. Posterity of the mind.
What is it?
Peacefulness. Prabhupada gave the preaching in Kali Yuga. One day of preaching in Kali Yuga. It's like thousand years of standing up your neck in ice water. And at one time he said, our austerities are very easy, but you cannot do them. Chanting 16 rounds, following right with Veda principles, hearing Srimad Bhagavatam reading the books. These are our austerities. But so many of us in that country, you know, we've seen it. People even said Prabhupada didn't understand to tell Westerners to restrict their sense of education. You can't do that and make you feel guilty. So much madness. Chanting is the main. And if we chant and of course there'll be so much exercise, everything else that posterity, which is like the pleasure of the Lord, is greatly appreciated by the Lord. Going out to preach, going out to celebrate. I like to see how hard these cooks are working. I don't know if anybody saw them going up the stairs with the bogan huge. Oh, is it carrying them? Some of us don't even want to walk up there to eat. We think we need to lift. They have to carry everything up there and eat. Not one plate at a time, but big bags. They're working from early in the mornings. And even if it's very hot, I can sit by the fire that's pleasing to the Lord. And then they get a lot of money. He was up very late last night.
Hare Krishna Sochan Purity. Purity, cleanliness. Prabhupada said that purity is the forest. We heard announcement by Marichi yesterday on whether you should keep their home clean. I heard a proper lecture at initiation ceremony about cleanliness and how there is cleanliness, internal cleanliness and external. So the external cleanliness we do with soap and water and internal cleanliness we do with the mantras, with our spiritual practices, with our regular studying of the Shastra. But the way we think, we already have the sense control.
So.
We think things which you wouldn't want to do, things which the activities are something which is impure. Then we want to take those thoughts out of our minds that we do by chanting or bringing in the light, placing it. But something spiritual, do you think? I don't want to think about this dirty thought. You'll be thinking about it, right? Instead you want to replace it. You want to bring in something else. There's the third part, which the problem says that what another thing we can do is we can neglect thoughts, desires that we don't want to do. By neglecting that also is one way deciding. If you're walking by the side of the river, sometimes you might find some pile of somebody left something in the morning. And so you neglect that you avoid stepping in it, you walk around it.
So.
Like that we also want to neglect the thoughts and the activities which are going to contaminate us. So soulcham purity, cleanliness is in many levels. So you come from the simple things. Like when we go to the toilet, we wash our hands and private parts and our feet and our mouth. Actually, they say back to the deevi worship. The first thing you have to learn is how to be clean. Because if you're not clean, then how are you going to do that? You're going to touch the deevis and yet to be cleaned. So that they teach the external kind of coming in. It says in the Vedas, if you get no, you know, before the name, they didn't have so much. So you can clean yourself by using mud. Say after passing a stool, you can rub your left hand in the mud 11 times. You can put three times mud on the hole of defecation, whatever you call it, you can use the 7 time your right hand and use both the hands so many times, 13 times. It's like a whole science, just using mud. How you can purify yourself as if you're wearing cotton cloth and you go to the toilet, go to a fast stool. Then the cotton cloth is considered contaminated unless you wash it in water, dip it in water. After people put on a gamcha in India when they go to the toilet, because then they'll wash the gamcha afterwards. Or that's why some of the Pujaris in cold places like Bhagvilat or some place they wear woolen gamcha. Because wool is always pure. It's always all you have to do is shake it in the air once it's finished. There's the woolen garment that's called lombatzjo. Then there's your cotton garment. Then there's the gear skin. Some sadhus, they used to wear gear skins that gets purified by putting it in the sun. Spent too many devotees using Deer skin. So many things. Just like when I first came to India. This is one of the main things. How to take a bath in a bucket, how to wash yourself. You think you got a bucket, you got a glass, you got soap, now your hands are dirty. So if you pick up the scooper from the bucket, then technically things are dirty. You don't have a faucet. They're talking how you hold the bucket with your two arms, tilt it over, put the water in the back. It's like a whole thing. In India, people were like, want to make sure you didn't contaminate anything. So how everything came, now we got water just to turn on the faucet. You don't have to worry about all these things. Take the soap three times, drop it. Should wash three times. After stool, one devotee went has water and then just, you know, washed his hands and water. And Draupad said, you're not clean, you gotta use soap. One time after passing water many times devotees, they don't think. I was once in a village and some Muslim guy, I don't know what, suddenly these Muslims became very biblical in India. He got on my case, he says, you don't wash your private part after passing water. So then that's going to contaminate your clot. But actually Sa Prophet always watched his private part. When he was even taxing water, he was this kind of external cleanliness. Then you read that if people go to bed at night and they don't wash their hands, they don't wash their feet, they don't wash their mouth, then they get more susceptible to being attacked by a ghost. He does a dirt attracts ignorance. So little things like that. Maybe somebody that night is drooling or the drool is coming down and then because that's dirty, then the ghost can enter through the drool. It's usually a sign someone's being hunted if they got a big drool coming out. And then the goats, they want to take over the senses. When you're not in control, you're crashed out. They want to take over the senses and go for a little joy ride. Like somebody tries to steal somebody's car and ride it around town. Okay, here's somebody didn't wash himself before he went to bed. Body is lying here unused. Let's use it. Let's go in there, have a joyride and somebody can, wow, what a far out dream. I had so much sensory identification, but actually a ghost had gone in their body and was using some of their facilities. So these first thing that sadhus are taught is that how to be clean. Wash your hands, wash your teeth, wash your face, wash your mouth. Then once you do all that external stuff, then what's going on in your mind? That's where we read the Shastra Chand Hare Krishna. But we're also pure in our intentions. We may think Kali Yuga one of the blessings. They might think something bad, but if you don't act on it, you don't get the reaction. So that in previous yugas, even if you fought something, that dad who'd be responsible? Because people had so much sense, control over their mind that they wouldn't think of something simple unless they wanted to. Now we don't have so much control. There's so many crazy advertisements everywhere, problems. And you see something, they show something. You know, what do you call those? Not posters, but billboards. And it shows advertising, some movie. And there's the hero and the heroine standing together. So then your mind, depending on who you are, what body you're in, you may think, oh, you're in a woman's life. They think they put their own self in the place of the woman, being by the side of the big hero or vice versa. If you're a man, you may put yourself by the side of the woman. And this way the money deludes people in so many ways. And so they put so many advertisements. This was advertising a Sony tv. They have to have a sparsely dressed woman there. So they're using all these kind of attractions. Or they have a big husky man to advertise with some kind of a sound system. They use all these things, the different attraction of the senses to market their goods. So this thing is polluting us, putting so much unnecessary thoughts in the mind maybe, or just imposing. But we can just neglect these things. So we can say this is ridiculous or we can fight means it's almost a constant effort just to keep the mind on track. And that's what the purity is, that the devotee is already keeping the mind. The easiest thing is always Chandary Krishna and putting the blinders on. Don't get distracted by. After a while you become numb to all this. So much exposure to these things that you don't notice it so much. But then for people who are in a more secluded situation and they come into this environment, it becomes more distressful. You see some simple village person come into the city, they get overwhelmed. Robert said sometimes sadhus, they go preaching and they go to some rich householder's donor's house and they start seeing all of the Opulence and the nice furniture and the beautiful situations there, the people might see dress, they start thinking, wow, this guy looks pretty happy. And this way the picture can start to get impure. I was talking to one boy on the curriculum, I was in curriculum and he was saying, you know what, he was a gurukul alumni and he's trying to be KA conscious. But he said, the problem is sometimes when I go out preaching, I look at all the people, I think, well, they look pretty happy. We hear that everybody's unhappy, but they look pretty happy. You know, they're enjoying life. Have you ever visited a hostel? You ever seen that? But so this way, the mind easily gets attracted and thinks things if we don't act on it and if we deal with that on the mental platform, then we keep with our intelligence, keep ourselves consistent that this is what I want to do, this is how I want to do it. Even if somebody wants to do has a nature of I want to be hostile, I want to have a family or I want to have a nice place to stay. Just like I got a phone call this morning where someone says they're having such a successful Nam Hat program that in the past one month they have 80 new devotees and their house is so full that they don't all fit because they have 40 regulars already before now eating new people. So they want to know whether they can get a bigger house or get a bigger place somewhere so that they can, can help because they're so many new devotees. So like this. I know some people working in the Middle east, the expats and you know, everybody working, all the Indians who work in the Middle east, they want to build a house here in India. They make some money, they want to build a house, even though most of them work in America. You see along Mayapur Avenue, up beyond the bridge, beyond our medicine plan, all these, these multi story buildings with all the beautiful decorative balconies and everything. And these are all the brahmacharis and grihastas who are there in the Atlanta airport, you know, pushing sick people. Well that's the main thing they do right now, pushing wheelchairs, there's no income tax. So then they are building at least the ones that we're building a house in my airport, a good one. I mean there are other people, other places, one other. But that's one of the things I like to do, is build a nice house. What the people in the Middle east, they want to know after being devotees, not only did they build a house, but they built a girtanho they designed what used to be the garage, used to be the living room. They designed such a way of a temple and a big hall. So they have a facility where they can preach. So somebody can purify their money by using a co grisa. They can purify their thoughts by thinking about Ka. They can purify their tongue as Maharaj said, by chanting Hare Krishna ye ka prasada. So we purify, we keep such by doing everything in a ka conscious way. Eventually we remain pure. As soon as we do something simply because. Simply because I want to do it, we don't connect it with ka. Anyway, I've done so much service. Let me just do one little wrong thing. What's the problem? It's not going to be so much then. We're allowing immediately impurity to come in our consciousness. And that is like the beginning where Maya can start to attack. You can start sadiqa. Almost everything reasonable you can connect into Ka. I have to drink plenty of water to keep a healthy body. Drink plenty of liquids, take dhava. I have to eat nicely to keep my body healthy. Baba says sleeping and resting is also service to Ka. If we can dove pill, we can't think of any reason to dove pill. I know sometimes I'm an airplane and there's some stupid movie and I'm thinking is there any Krishna conscious reason to watch this movie? Nope, couldn't think of a single one. Okay, I'll just read my Bible. I mean if it's something like Star Wars, I mean I could think okay, for Maya 4 I can watch this special effects or something if I heard about Matrix. Okay, that's pretty supposed to be pretty interesting way that something somewhat philosophically connected. Even dovetailers. Yeah, Star wars seems to be more like. More like Ramayan put in outer space or something so that you're on your own, you know, you're not gonna. It's what son that in the. The guru is going to be looking over your shoulder. Somebody told me that they were feeling guilty because they did something wrong and they knew what was wrong. And every time the guru looked at him, they thought the guru is angry at me. The guru knows what I did. The guru, you know. And then finally after two years now they say I have to tell you, you know, please forgive me because I did this thing. But it's not that the guru is super so that he necessarily knows everything that someone he may know that something's wrong. Why is this disciple looking at me weird? Or why is this disciple seems to Be nervous or something or never comes around or something. You know, they can sense something is happening. Funny. But we don't necessarily know that. Okay. On the 3rd of January and two years ago, 7 o' clock at night, you know, this thing happened.
And I think.
So that's why the disciples in case also we're purified by praying to Krishna. I made a mistake. I blew it. I didn't act properly. Now I am a guru. I made a mistake and I seek for forgiveness. And then trying better. It's a gradual process. We may make slips and falls. We may have just unthinkable. We stay in the fight against Maya. We declared war against Maya. Prophet said so that purity is that we don't sell out to Maya. Actually, actually in that. I saw that movie Matrix a couple times on an airplane. And it's actually like some kind of a movie where everybody is trying to get free of Maya. It's a big illusion that's keeping the whole world in control. And there's this group of freedom fighters that are trying to break out from the illusion. But it's more like using mystic powers and things. But then there was one guy that sold out. He cheated on everybody. Then when they said you cheated on you turned us into the Matrix to the illusion. Then he said anyway, it's just too hard to fight it. Being an illusion is fun. Then it's just easier than his illusion was so nice. So easy. Right. All this hips started to. And if you were fighting against it, it was austere. It was tough. And if you were saying things as they were interesting kind of a movie. I'm saying how this guy sold out. He's not. That's the guy. But that's the guy. He just sold out to Maya gave up. And we lose soldiers like that. And you know, maybe next life they get another chance. So we're trying to be as a family trying to encourage people. Don't give up. Don't give up this money. And actually it's not like so difficult. It's not like we have to suffer. Actually Lord Chitanyas can. It's all nature. It's not like we have to do obvious, you know, heavy austerities. Like with the yogis or something. We eat nice food, but rahati offer deficiency prasadam. So many things like that do with samai. Sometimes even on the chair list can envy. It's people are enjoying in Bhakti. Siddhan Sarah is not going to say whatever you do for Krishna, even if it appears to be sansyana to give ways you're actually doing it for Krishna, it's no problem even if something appears to be very austere. But if you're doing it simply for your own name and fame or your own false ego, that essentially. So the standard for purity is good for ka on a higher level, you know, the spiritual purity. Anyway, I gotta scope too long on it. Next one we got here, Chantir, which is tanala.
For Kantim, as tolerance. It's also translated as forgiveness, which is a very important quality of a Brahmana forgiving. This is the powerful weapon of a Brahmana when you forgive someone's offense and.
It.
Diffuses their energy. Bhakti Kirkhamraj had a class on forgiving those who have hurt you the most. In my opinion, the first day he said, oh, we got a lot of angry people in there. I don't know if any of you were there. Then gradually they broke down. And he said, well, everybody was crying and trying to think of forgiving people that have offended them. People were saying their fathers abused them. This happened. That happened in Kali Yuga. So many terrible things happen. So one is holding a grudge, we call it in English, you know, always wanting revenge. Even in the Bible, Jesus said, God says, vengeance is mine. It's not for us, the revenge. I work in the Middle East a little bit in Israel, and those people you see, they're in the news a lot. And the two different fanatic religions, which are. There's so much absorbed in vengeance. Whenever they talk to their defense minister on the cnn, they say, well, we're not doing any. All we're doing is, you know, reciprocating. We're just responding. They attacked us 10 million years ago. You know, a Jew killed a Muslim. We had to fight back, you know, and we gotta have vengeance. And they all think that after we've avenged. And the Jews think that they're so valuable. So if one Israeli gets blown up by a suicide, then they have to kill 30 or 40 Muslims. The Muslims, each Muslim has so many uncles and brothers and cousins, and every one of them has their revenge. So they don't want to quit. There's no question of peace talks because they don't want peace. They want revenge. They think that they have to avenge, you know, the wrong that was done to them. So food like that and. And in many ways we're like that. We don't even realize we're actually still angry at somebody that insulted us in our childhood. Our parents didn't treat us properly or when we Joined the temple, some devotee didn't treat us properly and we hold it in. Sometimes we forget about it. We haven't really tolerated Lord Caitanya's stress on humility and tolerance. We have to tolerate so many things that live in the very world to tolerate pain. But the more difficult thing is to tolerate pleasure. Say when there's so much nice prasadam and every bite is very enjoyable, very difficult to say, well, I've had enough now. Much easier to just eat more and more and more. Yeah, somebody's crying. I have diarrhea, wouldn't eat.
I do it.
I could give a seminar later for everyone who'd like to know the science of dysentery and how the body works and all the things. Yeah, well, it seems to be an important subject. People, you know, every. So many people are asking, but everybody's asking, what can I eat? I'm sick, what can I eat? Animals, when they get sick, what do they do? They don't eat. Even a lion will eat grass and just drink water, lay in the sun, dog even. But the humans. I know myself, whenever I got sick, my mother.
Oh, you have to eat.
Take this, eat this drink, make this soup, do this. You have to eat, have to eat. You have to get your strength out. But you have no digestive power. So even if you're in the hospital. My mother was in the old folks home. These people were 80 years old, 90 years old. They just lay in bed all day long and they're trying to force them. You gotta eat, come on. You know they're stuffing all kinds of heavy. Anyway, we have to tolerate. We have to tolerate insults. So Krishna repeatedly says, who's dear to him? Equal in happiness and distress, equal in fame and infamy, equal in honor and dishonor, equal in victory and deceit, People and loss and gain. Right. Chapter 12. Jayanth and other places. That's tolerance. Tolerate praise and tolerate blame because that's the nature of the material. These things just keep happening. But sometimes it's easier to tolerate insults than to tolerate praise. Not so easy, you think? Yeah, this is a very intelligent person praising me. Finally I found someone with so much wisdom, so much good vision. But those people are often. That's the main tactic of cheaters, right? They glorify you and tell you how great you are. While they pick your coffee. You get distracted. If the person is insulting you, then you might run away anyway. That forgiveness is very, very important. And we have to. Sometimes we don't forgive ourselves, we make a mistake like he was saying. And then we worry and cry and we think I'm really bad, I'm bad, I'm no good. Some people go so far they can they hate themselves. But we have to carry on or people we get devotees. Oh, please forgive me. But real forgiveness, like Indra, after he offended Krishna and Gopadan, he said, I know you will forgive me, but please give me the intelligence not to act stupid anymore. But many of us, we ask to please forgive me so I can do it again. I know you'll forgive me, right, Maharaj, you're just such a nice guy and you don't mind that I just stole all your Maha Prasad and broke your computer and you'll forgive me, right? But I have no intention to change. That's very common, that Kali Yuga. So we have to work on that to forgive others that offend us. I was talking in Africa to one very intelligent Supreme Court judge who's a very strong Roman Catholic scholar. So in the Lord's Prayer it says, forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Forgive us our trespasses, translate us and forgive us our debts. So but he says this is a conditional that God forgive me as much as I forgive others. Understanding does it mean some deep meaning to them? Everybody that was raised in the Christian, we recited that prayer millions of times, right? Our Father are in heaven, Help the name of the Lord without thinking about it very much. But if we're lucky, we came to Krishna. So if we don't forgive others, how can we expect anyone to forgive us? Krishna forgives automatically. That's not. You don't have to actually petition Krishna, you know, and try to trick him or anything. He's a loving father and the loving father forgives. The mother isn't worried when the child in the womb kicks her or the baby vomits all over her legs. But this is very, very important to holding this vengeful mood. This anger and grudge and not forgiving hurts that were done to us. It can we get stuck. That's why some of us are stuck. And we've been chanting for a long time, but we don't seem to make any progress, right? Anybody? I don't know. When I was, I grew up in the northern America, so in the winter there would be amazing ice and snow. Car wouldn't work, you know, you put on the brake, nothing happens. Turn the wheel, nothing happens. Very spooky experience. Turn the wheel the other way, nothing happened. Put on the brake and nothing happened. Just keep going because of the ice or in the morning, you tried to start, but the wheels just spin and spin and spin. Can't move. You know, if you're rowing the boat like buttons and 100%, but your anchors are down, your material attachments, you're holding on to, you know, grudges, not forgiving. And then sometimes that'll build up till you start to blame the devotees for your trouble. And you start to blame your guru. You start to blame Krishna, you know, why did he do this? Why did he say that I can't follow, that I can't do this? So we have to start, you know, from either end analyzing how much that very, very important quality of the Brahmin is forgiveness. This weapon takes the. Keeps everything nice and not only inspire others, also those who hurt you, if you forgive them. It's become a big item and as many seminars devotees giving a go on for many hours a day. There's one course in Stanford University, Forgiveness 101 people come from all over the world. There was one example. There was one older lady from Northern Ireland and her son had been killed by the Protestants. I guess it is. I don't know which is in Ireland. The Protestants and the Catholics are always fighting. And then another lady came and her son had been killed. She was from the Southern and her son had been killed by the Northern. So for years and years, they hated Catholics. One of them hated the Catholics, the other one hated the Protestants. So they came all, all the way to Southern California, Northern California. And then they took this course and they met each other. And then they started realizing they both, you know, were burning up and suffering for 20 years in hatred, literally for each other. But they both had the same problem. And then they both became happy.
But.
Within our own circle. And, you know, so this is a Brahminical quality. We have to be Brahminical. Tolerance and forgiveness, the word is translated if you look it up in the Bhagavatam, both ways. Many seminars are being given in Mayapur and all over the place. Very purifying. Lucky Turkish mahjong. E. Winsker hang everybody. But the first day he came, just exhausted. He just said, we have so many angry people there. You know, when you start asking them, like you have people you're angry at. Everybody's just, you know, carrying all this baggage. And by the end, they were all like, relieved. Let it all out. You know, sometimes you can never. The person that you hate, gave even. But Brahman, no matter what happens, they don't blame the other person. When the cricket approached, Dharma the bull, you know, his legs were beaten. And he said, who did this to you?
And he goes, well, it's very hard.
To say who did this. He started getting all philosophical. He didn't want to blame anybody, although he knew that personalities were actually beating him. He was saying it could be because of this reason, his past, karma, this, that. So many things. He's a good example.
Morichi asks whether there's anybody who's keeping diaries of the safari Margarita. Anybody else? No. Men are great. Want to send some of the things up on the Internet? Anybody wants to write something, put up on the Internet. You have to wait till the end. You can give things now. Next, talk to them later. Filming digital cameras so we can share. Come up with a real nice cd, a vcd, color honesty art gelatin honesty.
In this world, we're being trained. How to be so dishonest? If you look at how.
People are.
Being trained to face happiness in terms of body, we see so many various situations follow because everything belongs to.
To you.
You are a controller, you are a proprietor. As Schnepauer describes in mathematics, you may have a wrong equation in the beginning and perform so many theorems with that same equation, but the answer will be wrong, even though so many steps in between were correct. So the Bhagavad Gita Ghrabha describes how honesty means knowledge of one's own shortcomings. A devotee sees oneself in relationship with the Supreme Lord as a servant by acting in a capacity for thinking of the others. In this world, we see our position in proper ways.
I remember when I once went to.
The Grand Canyon, I had to do some photography. If you take one picture of the Grand Canyon, you can't really capture the entire scenery. So I developed this style of photography, of taking many pictures together and putting them in a pan like fashion. And I had a realization that as we progress in devotional service, there may be a tendency, because of bodily attachment, to see just one frame at a time of our life. Not to live for the others, but to face happiness in terms of what gives pleasure to be. This destroys a sense of seeing the.
Overall picture of things.
It destroys our quality of real honesty in life. Imagine yourself as a child walking into a pharmacy or some, we call them chemists in Australia. The child does not know about the different drugs that may be on the counters. A child has no knowledge. And innocently, a child may take these different chemicals and place it into the mouth. A very dangerous situation because there isn't that knowledge there. There's a sense of becoming victimized by the laws of Karma Srivaba describes the hard rain or Karma. So this honesty helps us understand how to make forward steps in our life. And in this way we become very conscious in our service to others. One personality, King Yudhistere, he was such a supremely honest person. You may remember when at the time of the Pandavas going Himalayas to leave this world and they're walking along this path, and what happened first is that each Pandava began to fall. Die first to fall was Draupadi. And Dinah asked Eustir, why? Why has Draupadi fallen?
And.
He replied that actually she was to treat us equally, but she was still attached to Arjuna more than the others. So because of this particular attitude, this is why she has fallen. Next came Nakula. Nakola, as you know, was very, very attractive, very beautiful. Edina asked Yudhche, why is Nakula, our brother, fallen? And Yudhchita said, well, Nakulak, he was attached to his beauty, so handsome. Then Sahadev was next. Sahadev, as you may remember, was very, very intelligent, very expert cowarder. And Nima, notice that Sahade, he fallen. Why has he fallen on the path? Well, he was proud of his intelligence. Then next Arjuna, Arjuna fell on the path. Habina asked Yusuf, why is Arjuna the carrier, the Gondeva bow, why is he fallen? Yudhistira replied that Arjuna said that actually he will kill all the Kaurava soldiers by his own prowess. He did not do this. He could not fulfill this vow. So then Bhima, it was time for him to fall on the path. And then Bhima asked Yudhistya, what have I done? And Yudhisthev said, well, first of all, you ate too much and you were proud of your great strength. As you know, Bhima had the strength of 10,000 elephants. But there was one other personality that was still with Yudhisthair, and that was one dog. So then it came. Eudestair went to the top of the mountain and the flower airplane had come. And the personality, I think, was it that Indra was there. And he said, Yudhister, now get on the airplane. But Yudhister said, I cannot get on this airplane. I have to take my friend with me. But Indra said, no, you can't take this dog. A dog cannot go to heaven. And Yudhishthir said, well, I always have given shelter to others. I have given this dog shelter is all this entire trip. So I cannot reject this dog. I will not go to heaven if I cannot take this Dog with me. But as you well know, this dog was not an ordinary dog. It was Yambaraj. He just stares, father. And Yamraj said, actually I've given you this final test because you are actually the personification of religious principles. Or in other words, personification, honesty. And then Yudhish there got on the plane and in this way went back to the heavenly abode. So honesty is a very, very important feature. And we notice in our sacred time that sometimes there may be emphasis not so much on distribution of literatures but a distribution or shall we say a focus in collections only. And the tendency for distributors, if they're always dodging the truth of what they're collecting for, to have dishonest dealings with not only conditioned souls but also in terms of their fellow godbrothers. God's sisters, Temple president. And it could even enter the arena.
Of one spiritual master.
It's the wonder of bookly severe. So make acknowledgement developers a proper balance of honest dealings with the conditioned souls, with ourselves. At the same time develop a progressive honest relationship with Krishna. And in this way we can make progressive advancement in our spiritual life and also invite others into that progressive path.
The last three are Ganum began and on stickam. Or do you want to stick to the same word? We want each or just do all the three together and you see.
It.
Again. I need a few. They're calling me to go out and visit six rehabs this house. A few devotees to come and help me drink dolls and stuff. I don't imagination on my behalf. Austerities and cultures. You have two men, two women. Women. Take this austerity.
Get ready. Any volunteer.
With me when I visit some houses. We got one couple here. Anybody else? This is black shirt.
Okay.
Got it. After this I have to go. So I'm pretty ready to go. So gana. Sometimes people think gana just means like knowledge. There's a library. There's so much knowledge about so many topics. Go university. Science, history, law, geology, geography, technology and so on. But that is not really what knowledge is. Real knowledge means to know the difference between. Like Krishna. Where is that verse in a Gita where dishes heard? What knowledge. This is knowledge and everything else. That knowledge is to know the difference between matter and spirit.
And to know.
Things which facilitate our progress in life. There's a lot of unnecessary things we can know. That's not really considered knowledge. But somebody may know how to play poker or something. They may know how to cheat people. So many things you can learn. I remember reading about one guy, he Was the world famous expert on cockroach. Cockroach. So that was. He was expert. He studied his whole life. He knew all the varieties of cockroaches, how well they mated, how they beat the, how they survived, what they ate. So he could go in the house and climb in the attic and know you have to break this wall. And behind here they found a million cockroaches and pick out this queen cockroach, take her out and then the cockroaches would all be. He said he had tremendous respect for the cockroach. He was very respectful. They're such survivors. You get people like that, they know so much about one particular thing but then you know that time of death, all that kind of knowledge is not going to help us. I mean a time of death that he's thinking about is what about my last cockroach? The next life you could turn up and be born as a cockroach and be the queen cockroaches. So this is a problem. We get so much information but real knowledge is something we can utilize in our ka consciousness programs. That's the kind of knowledge that we want. But we need to know things. We need to hear how we get knowledge is important. We need to hear from the scriptures. You know there's 18 Puranas and that six are in the mode of goodness, six are in passion, six are in ignorance. We're looking from different perspectives. Perspective of ignorance, perspective people in that vision of self. So for our spiritual life in the world of goodness, Shastas are more relevant. But if you know the perspective that the different scriptures are looking for then you can also apply. Next one is again how to apply that knowledge. Wanting us to have the knowledge. I say I have to learn how to apply it. That's his topic.
So I'm just.
You have to get knowledge from glorified sources. Just like right now it's coming in the newspapers about the war in Iraq and they're saying, well maybe the intelligence of the information of the people planning the war was not correct. They thought they're worthy and that all the people would support the allied troops and easily Saddam Hussein would fall. But they seem that there's a lot of resistance. Their information was wrong. People are more patriotic than what they thought. They're more nationalistic than according to. That's anyway that's all the prejudice going on in the newspapers. Everybody's speculating but we get so much information. So the government, they get intonation to their spies, to their spy satellites, to different government agencies. That's how the chain or the that's the dynam. The government gets information but how we get information we get from Sadhu, Shasta and Guru we get from the scriptures, we get from the spiritual master and we get from the lives of great devotees. And this kind of knowledge we utilize some general knowledge. You need also how to live in a material world to that what's relevant solve it. Krishna says here humility, tidelessness, non violence tolerance, simplicity approaching a bona fide spiritual master cleanliness, steadiness, self control renunciation of the objects of sense gratification absence of false ego the perception of the evil of birth, death, old age and disease detachment freedom from entanglement with children, wife, home and the rest even mindedness amid pleasant pleasant and unpleasant events constant unemployment.
