2003 || Śrīmad Bhāgavatam 8.20.19 || Melbourne, AU #JayapatakaSwamiArchives

A 2003 Melbourne lecture by Jaya Pataka Swami on Śrīmad Bhāgavatam (verse 8.20.19) that centers on the qualities of Brahmanas and Vaishnavas. The speaker recounts the Bali Maharaja episode—praised for simplicity, honesty and unconditional devotion to Lord Vishnu—and explicates Bhagavad Gita 18.42’s list of Brahminical qualities (peacefulness, self-control, austerity, purity, tolerance, honesty, knowledge, wisdom, religiousness), adding that Vaishnavas possess these plus pure devotion. The talk links doctrine to practice with anecdotes about austerity, guru instruction, household vs ashram life, and the spiritual benefits of sincere devotional service.
Translation by his divine grace at that time, the residents of the higher planetary systems, men of the Demikats, the Gandharvas, the Vidyadharas, the Sitas and the Charanas, all being great pleased by Bali Maharaja's simple, non duplicious act, praised his qualities and showered upon him millions of flowers purport Arjun. Simplicity or freedom from duplicity is a qualification of a Brahmana and a Vaishnava. A Vaishnava automatically requires all the qualities of a Brahmana. Bhakti Bhagavadyakinshana, Sayadhar Pune SATA sama Sade Shura Avaishnawa should possess the Brahminical qualities such as Satya sama Dharma to teach Shaharchu. There cannot be any duplicity in the character of Avaishnava. When Bali Maharaj acted with unflinching faith and devotion unto the lotus singer Lord Vishnu, this was very much appreciated by all the residents of the higher planetary system. So the thousands and thousands of kettles are drums and trumpets again and again. And they sang in great jubilation declaring how insulted a person is Babi Maharaj and what a difficult task he has performed. Even though he knew that Lord Vishnu was on the side of his enemies, he nonetheless gave the Lord the entire three worlds in Charlotte. Does that look at the qualities of the Brahmana 18th chapter, appropriate verse of it. And survey some devotees obtaining second initiation. That they are by nature have so many good qualities. And these the Brahmin had sometimes they say nine qualities or sometimes they sing 12. And the devotee let's also have one more one time. Shilabaki Siddhampa, Saraswati Kakur. He was invited to come to a lecture program for medical culture. So he went there and for a couple hours he was glorifying Brahmanas and all their qualities. Here the Bhagavad Gita explains the text. 42, chapter 18. Peacefulness, self control, austerity, purity, tolerance, honesty, knowledge, wisdom and religiousness. These are the natural qualities by which the Brahmanas work. So he was explaining each of the qualities, how these are the qualities of the brown air thing very good is really understood. Then at the end he says and all these follower peace automatically possessed by the Vaishnava. And they have one more which is pure devotion. Religious is one thing about that maybe also with material desires. But to be pure devotion actually work for the pressure of the water. That's a higher level. So there he went and ordered so Samo peacefulness Sama also needs to be Equal we become peaceful when we're equally polished in different situations. Things are always conflicting in the material world. Have any of you ever faced any conflicts? So to survive those conflicts, if we are able to be equal, not having friends and enemies, not seeing every reverse, every conflict in a more spiritual perspective, it will become peaceful. Seeing things more for the suffering, maybe bitter, something happened against us. There is also some kind of a reaction to things we did in the past. Somehow it's meant for testing our purity, our determination to serve. Some of the ways we can see it, like the Mother Earth that was being beaten by a colleague, she didn't. She was seeing it all by philosophically she didn't become disturbed. Of course, for Rickshaw he didn't see things the same way. But he was protecting the cow, doing his Bharma. Later, when he realized how this kaal was smart, the scenery for the saga was not ordinary Ka, the people who see things philosophically, they're special. So Brahmanas are very special people. Being a Brahmana means not to be ordinary, to do other things for a higher purpose. Because of that it can be more peaceful. But ultimately even a Brahmana without being a pure devotee is not fully peaceful. Just like what Chaitanya said. Mukti Mukti, Siddhi Pani, Sakri, Ashanto Bhakta, Visha Mukti Bhukti, Sithi Kaga Mukti means liberation. Bhakti means sense gratification and Siddhi means mystic active powers. The people who desire these three things, Sakali, Ashanti they're all three of them unpeaceful. They all want sad Rachisa. Either their material desire is being fulfilled or that they get liberation or that they get some mystic power. Because of that they're not peaceful people. Because unless they get what they want, they're still not peaceful. When they get what they want, there's not really going to be that what satisfies them. So they're still not going to be peaceful. Krishna Bhaktav Iska Krishna Devoti only wants to please Krishna. Therefore he appears to be a desire. But that desires because it's completely spiritual. It's in harmony with Ka. Therefore it's considered volunteer desire. Desiring something spiritual is the easy way not to is the only way really not to desire but anything. We spiritualize our desire by desiring to please Krishna. Krishna Therefore, because the pure duality of Ka doesn't happen to a desire. Therefore but the bodies have so many desires it doesn't mean they don't have desire. But they spiritualize all their desires. To the extent that we can achieve that, that extends be peaceful karma, self control. Brahmanas have to be self controlled. And Bhakti Yoga Krishna is in our heart. He sees what we're doing. But everybody else is not always there to see. So we have to be under a ultimate self control. Karakhals some kind of a prison and we're locked up. To some extent we can say that living in ashram there are all kinds of people that are there to help you remind you. That's in one sense I always appreciate Agihastas who are living in their homes and they're very self controlled because there's nobody who oversees them. They still have self control. In fact, some people when they move from the ashram, when they go out and start an independent household, then they finally don't have all those support systems that were there at the temple ashram. And Maya makes big attack. So they have to really become more mature. In fact, Gopal Bhakta Goswami describes the Hasta Ashram as the responsible ashram. Lots of responsibilities. One has to be responsible for their sexual activities, for family development person the society, the temple. So then Dhamma means control in this sense. Self control. That's austerity taking voluntarily inconveniences for the sake of ka. Sometimes you have to fast, sometimes you have to feast. I have to eat too much, nothing too little. So that's fair to talk about. I was. I was just in Para Russia where it was already minus three and it's going to be minus 25. But now it gets very cold. In the dream like there was this maybe she's 55, 60 years old lady I studied. And she couldn't carry a big book bag anymore. So she had a little roller cart, filled it up with about 30, 40 kilos of books. And she was going to go into some Kirito the next day. Go out in a minus and freezing weather with a roller cart pulling her books and the student books. That's the question also because he's going to sound especially. It's a very harsh environment. Still then just to make the Prabhupada described austerity. Sometimes it's like in the hot weather in India the ladies are cooking. And in the cold weather people are still taking their showers bath even if it's not like warm water. We saw these Rajasthani marble cutters in Mayapur over 1970s. Every morning they'd be there in the winter taking their cold shelving. So there's a whole different types of things under austerity. And that austerity that makes produces soul changes purity. They're not willing to take some austerity to do our happiness and purity. The purity pure physically, mentally and purpose. It's another quality of embarkment. They are pure. The Brahmana collects the donations and they use their own for Krishna. The Brahmanas are allowed to collect. Actually then they care for how they use to keep their purity. Tolerance. Shanti. There's so many intolerable things that happen in the third world. Somehow Vlahana sense of retaliate honesty. That's the word that was used today. Guru of Bali Maharaj advised him so called guru that he could lie. He could say Sorry, I kind of promised more than what I can really do. Gave all kinds of mundane logic and why it was okay to tell the line. But he said no, this is Vishnu. I'm an Apollo Tura to what I promised. Even he got cursed by his guru. He still went ahead with it. So that honesty see as glorifiable in the three world. Everybody appreciated that Bali Mahaz was a very honest person. What the speech of honest. He gave this one thing that make a promise that you 10 bucks or something. You know what Hebrew is two steps of wet. But he is going to lose everything. We had an empire of the entire world. Not only the world, but three worlds solving millions of planets, galaxies ascended to his domain. And in giving it all just to keep his word. And that is small things. This is a very high character. I'm sure his fellow demons. Oh, he is Nazis. Even his guru to speak of the other ones. That's why one of the representing the vain practice of devotional service. He's Ahmed in India. He had gotten the three worlds by stealing them at war. But in the end, Vishnu promises and I'll give it to you will become invariable in the future. Mahu for now virus for the manhood. The next one or the one after that. The valley becomes the bona fide Indra. With all the happiness and all the protection of Ishtar. I'll be happy to go back to Godhead before then. He didn't lose anything. You give, you be honest. Give and share. You don't lose. Whatever he gave away, he's going to give back in a much better way. And in the meantime, he's got a very peaceful kingdom in Suttala which is very opulent. Vishnu is personally present protect. But this kind of integrity. Personal integrity is rare. Somebody has it as a verminical quality. It's a Mona goodness. Sometimes devotees that don't live to these Brahminical qualities and it's very discouraging for new people or other people. This was a devotee in the vigilant Tantra. They were honest, they were reliable. They left their vowels and left their promises. They were very traumatic. But in this material world so many people are very rare to find those rabbinical qualities are very exalted. Then there's gano knowledge, having the knowledge of the scriptures. The knowledge of what? The self realization knowledge, transcendental knowledge, self gamma. Then how to apply that knowledge. That's big gamma wisdom. Someone may have knowledge, but then they don't know how to apply it. That's what one learns by seeing the lights. Like great devotees from the guru how to apply the different instructions. Sometimes the scriptures give instructions which appear contradictory. Like stools of an animal is dirty. Yet using cow dung, which is a stool of an animal to do puja for the deities. Ayurvedic medicine. Uran is medicinal, but otherwise normally any kind of animal you are in would be also being contaminated. So then they said. But then the guru explains that this is where we go based on reception. Because the cow is forced on the very pure. Therefore it's urine and tongue is also considered pure grams of turkey. So that's the wisdom we get from a guru. Sadhu Shasta. Especially with guru the votings that devise so much risk on how to apply them. Difficult to learn just from the books Practical example, there's not so many details that you do with arti. You look in a book, do art with them, offer a layer. Someone didn't ever see anybody do an arti. You know, who knows how they would often do it doesn't say like, okay, offer and clockwise little loops and things. In two minutes the guru can show you that that's how you do it. Right. So there's so many things like that that we need to learn. When we put the how to apply the knowledge, that's yam or wisdom. Sometimes ygan is used like in India. In modern Indian languages they use ygn as science. So it's almost like the scientific application of the mountains. Theoretical knowledge, application, astikim, religiousness. Like in the Bengali language, the word for atheist is nasty. Na as irreligious. No belief in God. So astikyam is astic means to believe. It is to believe in God. Astikyam, that quality of being religious or having belief in God. It means that Brahmanas are not atheists. I met this One priest that was atheist. Sir, I'm a priest because I do social work, has good pay, has low hours. I was shocked. Of course, most priests, I don't think I like that. Once in South America, there was a priest. He was sitting in the Darshan. Then after he said, I like to have a talk confusion. Guru to guru. Everybody leave the room. And then he was a Protestant and he said that he was married. He didn't know how to. He heard me mention something about a more spiritualized family life and he wanted to know more about it. So I explained to him the idea of regulated family life. And he was very appreciative at that point. He said, I never really knew it. I don't know if they'll tell you how you do. You're supposed to do that. Everybody else back in. Then after about six months, I came to a place again. Again he wanted a guru to guru talk white collar. After everybody left, then he reached in in his white collar and pulled out Tulsi make we have Jews for Jesus. Maybe in the future we'll have Christians for Krishna. So to be a believer, that's quality of Brahmana. Maharaj told me why since the morning and this chant came up here and said, you believe now. When he went back, you believe, I believe. You believe. Went back and forth. You know, I came to believe. I believe the body. They put their beliefs to practice every day. It's part of our. So many things we do. Everything is based on our faith. Belief in Krishna Shraddha. So that's also why the Bodhi Maharaj showing so much Bholi. When Guru said, this is Vishnu, this is Vishnu, he's begging for me. And I made a promise to him, why should I take back my wood, whatever the consequences? So that's also. He was a Ramansa deist and he had faith that if I do the right thing, I'll get the right result. So these are the qualities by which Brahmanas at work. We're born as human beings. That speaks to our parents. That's our biological birth, our first birth. But human being in this universe is nothing very special. You were reading here in these verses. Although a lot of entities right now, they're sending their Myers probe to find out if there's any fungus frozen. See if there is some other form of light anywhere else in the universe, spending billions of dollars instead. One voyager which will go to the next star system will reach there in 10,000 years to find out whether there's life there. So you can wait for the message whether the radio will still work by the time they get there, we'll miss the whole Sankirta, Rupert. Or they're talking about setting up all kinds of outer space telescopes in tandem. So you have a bigger image. I keep finding out recently they follow up that the universe is a understanding that it's much younger than they thought. All kinds of things. Of course, it's highly speculative, but here in the Bhagavatam, in the Bhagavad Gita, we have. It's not even a question. We have so many descriptions in Baba life. This whole thing going on between Bali and Indra and is all extraterrestrial. And all these personalities are talking about Kim Karushas, Kinaras, Chanaras, siddhas who are showering lali maharash with flowers. They are denizens of other planets. But not all those entities are invisible to human beings. They're very much more powerful. It says that if you compare one of the most powerful human beings, that there are other entities in the universe as compare, like, compare the Australian dollar in 1970, which is dollar today, buying power, so on and so forth. So this is like for comparison, you say even the Olympic champion, you know, weightlifter, big king or something, chaching number one. He's number one. Then you go in the universe, you get the Gunvaras at 10 times more than him, even rose. And more than they go up like that. And I forget to go now. Everybody go to Kinnaras and Chanagya. Everyone goes up 10 more than the previous. You go up about four or five levels. Then you get up to the asuras. These asuras are the descendants of who are superhumanly powerful. They're many times more powerful, even though they're demonic by their tradition. But they're very powerful because they perform all things austerities, penances, give all things mystic powers. But that's in time, more than them or the other are the devas. Usually the devas are more powerful than the asuras if they're more controlled, more religious. Indra is undertaken more than the other devas because he's the king of the devas. More special power, thousand times more than Indra is Brahman creating the whole universe. Eternal secondary creation. Vishnu is explaining this particular verse and he says bhagwat to speak, says the Brahmanas. Even I respect the Brahman. Even I respect the Brahman. I mean, we've seen like Brahma got cursed. Indra got cursed to be a pig. The Brahmanas Were so powerful. Whatever they said, it would happen. Because they live by all these qualities, they got tremendous hope. Four Kumaras were offended by the jaivichary. Krishna firstly came to apologize. So although they're born as a human being in a universal situation is very insignificant. But why humans especially? Because they can become Brahmanas. You become a Brahman for being a lifestyle is a shortcut to be a Brahman. But it's by living by these principles which is easy for devotees. Because if we do everything for Ka automatically we to achieve all these principles. That's why somebody changed 16 rounds for all the four principles as devotional service for more than one year. After being the first commission for more than a year, many belongings that came a few years before they decided. Then it's considered if you have these quantities, they can take psychoanaly. Then I put Swaga karmically on a fast track. You gotta be a good driver. If you drive on a freeway, highway, everything's going faster. Means you gotta know the traffic rules, you know, to be able to brainwash them very carefully. So it's just also the karma. Everything they do is the karma is consistent, heavier, like we say Yani kami chapapanya Brahmahati kami chant when we do the Tulsi Puja. At every step we can get faith from even a serious sin maker, Brahmadya. Killing a Brahmana is much heavier than killing an ordinary person. And also I read him one astrological book and Brahmarakshas, which are these heavy demon, cannibal, many rashnesses. They become that because they're Brahmanas who committed suicide. If you're just an ordinary person commits suicide and just become a goat. And if you're a Brahmana, you commit suicide, you become a double righteous. It's not just a status symbol. I wish I want to be a Brahman and a thread. It's a responsibility. It's an opportunity to advance quickly, to be closer to this virtual master. The problem with him once again. I remember sitting at Leksha gave an example. It's like Brahmana doesn't mean it's dialed here it's a new birth, but you consider kind of already at least a child. You get first initiation. It's like a little baby, okay? Little baby, you know, passes in the diapers or something. All right, you haven't started gradually. Go on that. But you have to clean up the rest sometimes. But that's, you know, second machine is like at least you're 9 year old, 12 year old. So if your 9 year old white asses in your lap would you have a problem nine months later? You can't work so you can't like plead ignorance. Have to take the second initiation survivor. As I tell people to take their time for a second. Don't actually have to have second initiation. Get back to God. I would probably say that it's not absolute. If you have it and you know that's quicker you can helps to control the mind. That's this plus point. But if a person is not caring then it can. It can be those of Ashtamodis is not. That's why we don't just give it. By the way, there's some I don't know so called gaudiyas that achieve the whole process of the Mishnah when they see especially if they see somebody from iskcondition. You've been chanting six rounds for eight months. Okay, we'll give you Bible. That's the only chance for it. You have to deal with that. You have no shame in me coming and asking. So that sounds you have attracted Prabhupada gave us in a very orthodox at the same time applicable to the modern situation. The most important thing can you stress that what vegetables do you want to eat? How do those vegetables eat? We didn't consider that to be very important. But what the principles of austerity Rabbinical principles that we consider the point that are performing pure devotional service today. It just happens that this verse today glorifying the Brahminical qualities the Vaishnava Bali which even though he's a Madhavana Kshatriya Kshatriya king of the Daityas for being a Vaishnava here always vomiting qualities. He had unflinching faith and devotion to Lord Vishnu. That was a special conduct. So Brahmana means. I remember one devotee once came up to see Prabhupada Prabhu Namati Prabhupada. And then Prabhupada asked him, what is Brahman? You don't know what Brahman is. You want to be a Brahmana. You don't even know what Brahman is. You better go back and study. How can you get Brahman appreciation if you don't know what is Brahman? So it's not there. Someone has to have some basic understanding. They have some truth in three forms is Brahma Paravato Bhakalata. The personal effulgence, the localized paramatra of the heart, super soul and the supreme personality of Gandhi. Bhagavana Lord Krishna. One has to understand that we are by nature part of the absolute truth or spiritual. We are my group higher Sudhir. We are also part of the Bhavana, part of the Krishna. Please send he vas and my partner. So Lord by name also Satan. The basic spiritual understanding has to be there. When you do puja, you have to meditate. I'm not this body. I'm the spirit soul empire Krishna. I'm not bodies worshipped in Krishna I that soul worship. Through this you must identify ourself very much from the spirituality. Somebody doesn't have a clue what that spiritual reality is. It says that by thinking that initiation is like some kind of a magical change, like touching a basement or the touchstone turns into gold. And through the process of diksha, somebody is transformed. And then they are accepted by Krishna as a spiritual ego. So they can start to communicate with Krishna, open the door. The paths into the more direct relationship with Krishna. Because they're supposed to understand that. And those number of aberrant thoughts become fewer, farther between. Sometimes they come in clusters, you know, especially if there's a bad spell, we're not chanting properly or not having good association with it. It's easy for all kinds of marathons to come with. That's why it's very important. Steady, silent, like the ability. But if we really happen to make mistakes, we have to beg for wish for strength or forgiveness and go forward and don't make the same mistake again and again. In this way, guys, we build up our strength. If these body go first and they'll just lift a light weight and more and more, you know, they can eventually lift, you know, hundred kilos plus. They start out with small weights. Maybe the tests for some devotees in the very beginning of their spiritual life. And just the so many little tests are there. Later on they become so much stronger that those things are not even a test at all. The newer tests come, there's like different levels. Level 3 to 4 newer levels of Maya, newer levels of attack, more subtle, more problem. Called the ultimate test. You can be God, you can invite or the Sahajiyas. It's okay, you can be the associate of them. I go through all this sadhana bhakti preaching. You can imagine that you're Lolita's assistant. So and so. Let's see. Sahaji method for shorthand things. The Lord even started thinking and I was kind of influenced and went to Vrindavan and was watching all the Madhav to see if this is the real way. But he saw, you know, they're all talking really big high philosophy. But then when it came time to go beginning none of God forage Aries. That's the least of. There are so many other recent things going on. So crowd puppets. Renowned Marxist preaching is Madrid. Many of these people that goes into the Uttu Manikind are actually preached so very much in the material platform. They're just covering it with nine colors and labels. And they are very much on a mundane level of Venus science. Better to try to be a madhyama Vikram then Ka. Lift us from there to Uttam. But if we imagine what Uttam is actually on the Kinesta Kanista means neoplat intermediate. Uttam means a dance. So Hindi will get neophyte level, the very beginner's level. And we tend to mix up material and spiritual things on a dim level. We see that warrior is the devotees is the innocent people. We make some discrimination. He is everything for Ka with the friends of the devotees. We peace to the innocent people who avoid the deed in the advanced level. And they see everybody as at the moment except themselves. They see everything in relation to Ka that can't be imitated, although people try. That's why all these celestial denizens appreciate Bali Buddhism. What he was doing is not something he could only do. To have that much conviction you have to do that. So they appreciate Bali versus Bodhi, a great personality. That's why we're talking about Boli. After billions of years, people like their leaders to be like that always hits the paper. Some minister gets caught, you know, taking got his bungalow fixed up by some lobbyists. They have to do something illicit and they have to renounce their ministership. Happens all the time. Because why people expect that they're ministers. The leaders are going to be character people, but they're not. That's why you need this kind of a medical change. In the Veda, it says a learned person isn't just the person who has book knowledge, which is all that our educational system. But as they taught characters. So there was Brahminical chain of people were taught side by side with the Gana. They were given a wisdom and how to develop all these qualities. That's what's kind of missing in our education. So we're trying to provide that in the Krishna consciousness of that. I appreciate all of your enthusiasm and participation. These words of other pose here. Praying is now the tomorrow. Next verses are text 21. And they often have justifications for managing their relevant or setting everything. They don't often feel confident to confront what they might say new because I'm new at I'm only being in debauch for a couple of years so I don't feel confident to discuss it argue with them and send it out their choice but it does in often in retrospect later on I feel that seems a subtle nerve of mine has got to and I'm fearful with that is a problem for myself we learn from mistakes of others A lot of people were expert at rationalizing giving ourselves a good motive for not doing what we're supposed to they're always pretty straightforward people I started to be honest in Krishna consciousness even nature and just keep trying as we can that tries to the nature of our false ego is that if we're doing something that we're not supposed to we're going to try to present that it's really okay because this isn't that reason that's how we weaken ourselves Rahman all of a sudden it's like a flight until we get to the destination there's no stop flying it's not going to be very productive and we stuck up wherever we stopped flying but mind is such that it will give us some reason maybe temporarily if somebody slows down later on I met seeing many devotees I met one problem Saint Bhagavad had been out of it for a number of years now Suddenly back to 16 rounds very active bring change Sometimes people do go through a phase of my phase of spiritual dormancy and then comes up again whatever says so can't ever write out the devotee you never know what and instead we don't argue with anybody but you can always encourage people we're looking up to you you're always loving and you're really sad on it's a devotees that are active that are making this thing that excuse that are inactive you should make this excuse active devotees of good consciousness while not practicing Nonetheless thank you for watching our videos Be sure to subscribe to our channel we publish new videos every day and don't forget to like and share our channel.
