This is a transcript of a recorded spiritual gathering led by Jaya Pataka Swami and other speakers (labeled SPEAKER A/C/D) from an ISKCON context. The speakers read and elaborate on Bhagavad Gita chapter 12 (verses 13–14), describing the transcendental qualifications of a pure devotee (non-envious, kind to all, not a proprietor, free of false ego, equal in happiness and distress, tolerant, satisfied, self-controlled, engaged in devotional service). The talk interweaves scriptural quotations, illustrative stories (a banana seller, the dwarf/Vamana imagery), practical devotional instructions (chanting the Hare Krishna maha-mantra, prasadam, deity worship, following a bona fide guru), and a description of Ratha Yatra (Jagannath) as a festival of reunion and public devotional outreach. The recording closes with a brief channel subscription/CTA.
Swami Prabhupada who is very near to Lord Krishna on this earth delivering the fallen souls. Text 13 and 14 of chapter 12 find 1 Peter as the 15 this into English translation that's bhaktived at his only Prabhupada figure is there. He translated and gave an explanation to the Bhagavad Gita as it is.
One.
Who is not envious, but is a kind friend to all living entities, who does not think himself a proprietor and is free from false evil, who is equal in both happiness and distress, who is tolerant, always satisfied, self controlled, and engaged in devotional service with determination, his mind and intelligence fixed on me. Such a devotee of mine is very dear to him.
Report.
Coming again to the point of pure devotional service, the Lord is describing the transcendental qualifications of a pure devotee in these two verses. A pure devotee is never disturbed in any circumstances, nor is he envious of anyone, nor does a devotee become his enemy's enemy. He thinks Quote this person is acting as my enemy due to my own past misdeeds. So it is better to suffer than to protest. In the Shimon Bhagavatam 10.14.8 it is stated, whenever devotee is in distress and has fallen to difficulty, he thinks that it is done Lord's mercy upon him. He thinks he thanks to my past misdeeds I should suffer far, far greater than I am suffering now. So it is by the mercy of the Supreme Lord that I am not getting all the punishment I am due. I am just getting a little by the mercy of the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Therefore a devotee is always calm, quiet and patient despite many distressful conditions. A devotee is also always kind to everyone, even to his enemy. Nirmama means that a devotee does not attach much importance to the pains and trouble pertaining to the body.
Because he.
Knows perfectly well that he is not the material body. He does not identify with the body. Therefore he is free from the conception of false ego and his equal poise and happiness and distress. The devotee is tolerant and he is satisfied with whatever comes by the grace of the superior ignored. He does not endeavor much to achieve something with great difficulty. Therefore he is always joyful. The devotee is a completely perfect mystic because he is fixed in the instructions received from the spiritual master and because his senses are controlled, he is determined. He is not swayed by false arguments because no one can lead him from the fixed determination of devotional service. He is fully conscious that Krishna is the eternal Lord. So no one can disturb him. All these qualifications enable him to fix his mind and intelligence entirely on the supreme works. Such a standard of devotional service is undoubtedly very rare. The devotee becomes situated in that stage by following the regular principles of devotional service. Furthermore, the devotee says that. Excuse me, the Lord says that such a devotee is very dear to him. For the Lord is always pleased with all his activities and focus the constant translation again with repetition. One who is not envious.
But is.
A kind friend to all living entities, who does not think himself a proprietor and is free from false ego and is free from false ego, who is equal in both happiness and distress.
Who.
Is tolerant, always satisfied, self control and engaged in devotional service with determination. This mind and intelligence fixed on me. Such a devotee of mind devotee is mine. It's very dear to me, very dear to me. So this is chapter 12, text 13 and 14 by what he passed. It is in the subject matter of devotional service. So here Lord Krishna is explaining about the qualities of pure devotee. Here devoting is decorated with so many wonderful qualities that are developed naturally. Even if one thinks that, well, I don't have all these qualities, it's going to be very difficult if we by chanting Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna Hare, Hare, Hare, Hare Hare and by engaging in bhakti yoga under the guidance of a bona fide spiritual master, one naturally develops all these good qualities and many more. But it's good for us to see if sometimes you want to know what are the qualities of a devotee, you'll see. And in this chanter there are many more verses explaining also other qualities that other only has. So one is that to be not envious in material life. Envy is a very prominent thing in America. Keeping up with the Joneses here, what are they calling in Australia? Keeping up with the birthday. Somebody else has got a swimming pool and you don't have one. And next time they were dusting and they say, well, you got to have a swimming pool too. You have a better car, whatever. Sometimes it's very easy to get in here. So you're in the workplace, you're not harming anybody else. But your colleagues are jealous. They're afraid you're going to get to perform. They're not going to get it. There's all kinds of things. This world is a rat race. So it's very easy because there seems to be a limited amount of happiness to go around because based on the senses. So people fight with each other often. But the more that people are getting actually Their spiritual happiness, then this type of activity is not relevant, not needed. I talk to many disciples who are working in big multinational corporations and they say it's very difficult. One disciple was quality control manager, another one was a production manager. Between the two, rather than trying to work for the real benefit of the company, rather they had to show the other person what was bad to get a promotion. So all these kind of things when the devotee is sad, brother, they're not interdental regression just for no purpose. Glory doesn't think he's a proprietor because he knows that Krishna is the proprietor of everything. This morning we were working or we were discussing rather about Mavana Deva. He's the dwarf incarnation. When he begged three scraps of lamb from a king who had conquered over the land, Kabali Maharaj and then Mali Maharaj said three steps away, why don't you take more? What are three steps? How much can you take? I said only about 10ft. Why should I degree I just take what I need. So I told him, okay, you can take. But it was actually the Bhagma Deva was a form of Ka. Then he expanded his body and showed that the whole universe is within his body. And in two steps he covered the entire universe and said where do I put the third step? So then Balika realized that he was giving. He was in a mood of giving. He thought he was the proprietor of things. He was very proud. He offered Brahmana. They looked at my man, I'll give you a whole planet I conquered over all the stars. You can have your own planet.
No.
Longer just take three steps. From the end, he saw that nothing belonged to Baalim. Everything was actually the Lord's anyway. But what he realized, whatever we have, Krishna is giving us an idea. But he's the actual proprietor. It's not that devotee is giving donations to Ka Rather we're just returning back some of the energy that Ka gave.
Us.
Acknowledging his proprietorship. When we know that the Lord is the proprietor, then this will actually less stress and anxiety for ourselves. When we put ourselves in the Lord's hand that we're his servants, then.
We'Re.
In a much more secure position sometimes now. Recently in the past few years, some fortunes of different companies have gone up and down. But that affects the shareholders more than the employees. The employee got a sentence in St. Louis when it worse comes to worst and they lose a job and find another one. For some people, they may have one day a billion dollars and the next day have nothing. I don't know what happens to all the shareholders of The Sibirsta no company. 1 billion, $10 billion missing from the account book. So if we are the proprietor, that means we have to take all the anxieties. So if we're not the proprietor of our lives, but Krishna is the proprietor. But Bhakti Vinantakur, he prayed to Ka.
Upon it.
Krishna, whatever I have, I'm offering to you. Actually, everything is already yours. But if there's something that I still think is mine, like my mind, my house, my family, I'm offering everything to you. Simply engage me in your service. I want to use whatever I have in your service. Using things in Ka service, it doesn't mean anything unnatural. It just means we do things in the right way. And some people may destroy their bodies, thinking that's my body, I can do with it what I want. If I want to destroy it, what's my life? But the devotee can't think like that. Because the devotee understands Krishna is the proprietary. Krishna given us, the body used for a particular purpose. If we misuse the body, we're actually committing an offense against Krishna. So that produces a bad karma for us. Because the devotee knows that the whole universe belongs to Ka, the body belongs to Ka. So then the devotee, naturally we could say it would be ecologically favorable, wouldn't want to harm anything in ecology, wouldn't want to misuse you or hurt anyone. Because everyone is equally Krishna's property, equally dear to Ka. In fact, right now we have all these multinational companies that think they're the proprietors. They can exploit all the things from the earth. And we're having global warming with all kinds of dangerous consequences. When every country thinks they're the proprietor of their national wealth, that they can do what they want. But if everybody thought actually God is the proprietor, Krishna is the proprietor, then really they don't have a right to exploit to the extent that it's going to ruin the earth. They're trying to blame that the cows are burping up too much gas. There was no problem even with the cows before. The huge factories are putting so much pollutants in the air. That's only when the problem is there. A devotee is free from a false ego. Since the devotee knows that he's not the body, he's a spirit soul, therefore he doesn't have the false body. He's equal in happiness and distress. Any of you ever experienced happiness in?
I hope so.
Anyone ever experienced distress? Sure did. Although I hope not. How do we Equal happiness and distress. How come everybody wants to be happy?
Right?
How many here want to be happy? How do we ignore? It sounds like almost a contradiction.
To.
Find a subtle balance. Because in life we cannot avoid distress, we can't avoid happiness. We're going to have both of these. In this material life there's happiness, it's a nice day, things are going alright. Suddenly we get moved, some deer, the near person is sick or some we're having trouble at the office or this is something always sometimes when distress hand comes again, a stomach ache. Bhavi Veda saying there's two kinds of distress we get from our own bodies. We get distressed in other people. So when we're going on a walk, on a flight here, trying to give you distress. Or sometimes maybe a mad dog or a mad cow. Nowadays because they feed the cows wrong food. So this other living areas may be too hot or too cold or there may be a cyclone or hurricane or some kind of storm. That's the natural causes. Earthquakes, tidal waves, floods. I think there was floods in Australia sometimes. So sometimes you get happiness and sometimes you get distressed. Mainly if there's no distress. That's what's considered to be happiness. So you have to be balanced because in this maternal life you're going to have both of these. If somebody gets to it intoxicated by happiness, then they tend to not save for the rainy day. They tend not to be very balanced and how to utilize that. Then they spend, they stand to compromise on their principles and they get distressed and they get depression, hopelessness. So we have a spiritual balance. We have a spiritual source of our happiness and we have a material equilibrium. That way we can be equal in happiness and respect. So what we want everyone to do is to experience spiritual happiness. Then you can be equal in material happiness and distress. Because even in material distress you can still be spiritually happy. Spiritual happiness isn't dependent on the weather or the mosquitoes or the flies or the neighbors or your own body. Spiritual happiness is dependent on your spiritual progress. So previously spiritual progress might have been very complicated. But knowledge before very easy. Basically we need to meditate and meditation has become very easy because we can meditate by chanting the Hare Krishna mantra. It's like you can meditate even while you're riding in your car or riding the bus by walking, by swimming. In general there's no hard fast food. So the system of Bhakti Yoga is to get ourselves absorbed in the whole spiritual environment, the whole spiritual routine. When we do that, we learn the different techniques, chanting Is the basic thing. But there are other things that you spiritually go eat food. How many of you like the passada that they serve on here? Those feasts? That's the spiritual food. Don't we like the feast too? So that's part of yoga. You can go back to the spiritual world. You can become spiritually advanced just by eating. That's not too difficult. If you can eat this virtual food on the God mercy over here, down gopals, crossways, food for lions. And come here to the temple, you can learn how to cook. Best thing is learn how to cook in your own home. And how to offer the food to Krishna, how to prepare yogic food. And by taking that kangana yoga food. That alone will help you to advance. By coming here and visiting the temple, seeing the deities who are incarnations of the Lord for allowing us to pray to them and worship them. By reading the Bhagavad Gita, by doing so. This is regular, very simple practices. Over a period of time, we start to become very spiritually advanced. And these things start to give us natural spiritual happiness. So we got equal unhappiness and distress because we have a higher evidence. I had a high fever of India. They thought it was malaria, but it was actually an infection in my bladder. They gave me all the wrong medicine. Nothing happened. I was so high, I was like 100. I was Fahrenheit was like 106 or 42 plus. They thought, you know, I was going to leave the body. But somehow they kept playing these beautiful tapes of Prabhupada giving a lecture on Vrindava and a lecture of devotion. And I was feeling so happy on the one hand from hearing these beautiful lectures. While physically my body was like a total wreck. And then I could really realize the graphic difference. I the spirit soul within the body. The my body is like in total pain. But then spiritually, by chanting and hearing Prabhupada Mah's lecture, I was feeling spiritually happy. It was a real contradiction because I was getting the pain impulse at the same time. But I was also feeling the spiritual happiness from the spiritual efforts. You can actually, after some pain, realize the difference between the physical impulses. You get physical input that you're getting to your consciousness. And I want higher spiritual. But you won't realize that once you get the higher spiritual. And they don't get that unless you chant and develop a spiritual way of life. Eating spiritual diet and thinking spiritual goes about philosophical points of seeing things. That's very important. Pointing one is to be Tolerant. I remember once there was a Brahmin who was very intolerant of Lord Chaitanya. He said, you are making everybody devotees. You are going against our caste system. I curse you to never be happy materially. And the Lord Shaitanya, he said, the people, it's a blessing. I don't want mutual happiness. I only want spiritual happiness. So Lord Chaitanya was so tolerant against these people or other people were intolerant. So that way he was always satisfied. We work, we get a certain amount. The devotees can limit their ambition. They work, they have a period of this, this much energy I'm going to get from material progress. And then accordingly what they get, they become satisfied with that. They keep time for their family, keep time for their Ka conscious. They keep time for some preaching for different things. They don't. They don't just totally put everything in one thing. And because of a balance, life, lifestyle and the spiritual orientation there satisfied. There was this very, very poor banana salesman. He used to grow his bananas in Bengal and sell them in the marketplace. His name was Olivechen, a street hire. And maybe here bananas down a bad thing at that time. They didn't really have export import 500 years ago. So it was like selling bananas in Bengal. And everybody had a banana fence going all over the place. Just a wild. It was like selling coals and Buchanan. It was like high market and not very much of a margin there. So he was just barely able to make ends meet. But that's what his profession was. He had his own banana peels to grow. And some of his neighbors get on his case. They told him, look, it makes you that. Why don't you just see poet? He dedicated 50% of his profit every day to worship the Ganges river as a beauty, as a service for his guru. And Krishna the told, why don't you just stop this worship of the Ganges for six months, one year, gather some capital. You can buy more land, you can get a bigger banana patch. You can do something and then you can give more money for your Kabuja says a very simple verse. And he said, look at the city if I stop. I started, you know, trying to gather. What's the guarantee that I'm going to start again? I need just to get in the habit of not getting. And then I'll be in big trouble. Spiritually. I'm working hard. If Krishna wanted me to get ahead, then I would get a head. He just took a very simple outward. And so look at all of this. But if you're adobe, it's kind of olson. Well, I got close on it. How swoop is going to happen? He said, well, since half of the climate here, you know your little area, it's not a big problem. You're crazy. Why don't you get a hammer? Now we know why you're howling all night. It's how do you all walk in a chair? You're hungry, you're in hunger pain because you can't sleep. They're really nasty people. But it turned out to see that actually called he was the Lord's test on him that they were very poor. But he never wavered in his devotion. So Krishna always used to come over and see him. One time one Chaitanya came to see him and say Koh Elekshan, I know you're really a wary wealthy man. But you're hiding your wealth. You're hiding your wealth. Why don't you tell me where your wealth is? I don't have a wealth. Well, look at anyway, you know, I'm a poor Brahmin. I want to know that if I make it, what can you give me? You know I'm a Brahmin. I don't work. I get donation.
Sama.
Ra Sami Namaste. He's the man in charge of the front. You have to follow what he says.
As far as here is concerned, he's.
The man to look at. Just follow God's instructions. Now we're going through the water. Okay. And then we're going to turn left. La. Oh.
It'S like doing your own.
Facebook. Sam. It's Sabot Ra it Ram. It's.
Ra.
Ra.
So Lord Chaitanya appeared in Sri Lan Mayapur, a very special place in India. And Jaipataka Maharaj, he's calling us Jaipataka Swami who's an initiating spiritual master and a member of the governing body commission of iskcon. He's in charge in this place. And he has a very special wonderful ability that whenever he speaks about Lord Caitanya's pastimes with Leela playing then actually Lord Caitanya is invoked. As presence is invoked, one can actually experience. So we're very fortunate to have him here. It's been a wonderful experience. Very lucky that Maharashtra.
I want to.
First offer my obeisances, my respects and my surrender to my spiritual master's divine grace, AC Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada and to the supreme personality of Godhead 1 in his most merciful form as Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu who is Krishna himself and comments of devotee and to Lord Krishna, Balaram and Subhadra, the supreme personality of Godhead, the Lord of all the existences and the supreme energy. I've come here today to Bhaiwam Bay and we had a wonderful procession. How many of you enjoyed the procession? That's called Ratha Yatra. Ratha means the chariot. Yatra means a journey for the Lord. He takes a journey on a chariot. Normally you can see the Lord if you go to the temples. You see Krishna in his temple where he is worshipped very formally. But this form of the Lord Jagannath, he's very kind. He likes to come out on the streets, the beaches, and be taken for a ride. And we who are pulling him, you know, like his horses, we all get all kinds of blessings. We all get all kinds of spiritual credits for pulling the Lord to all of you are whisked for being here, for pulling the Lord, for appreciating if you didn't pull, for dancing in front of the Lord or standing and just appreciating, maybe your ticket back to the spiritual world. It's such an important thing. And he went from there in a procession with his brother and sister to Hastinapur, the capital of the empire at that time. And then to a holy place called Phurukshetra. Kurukshetra is where they. Even today, all these places are still existing except Dwarka. There's a city called Dwarka, but the original Dwarka where Krishna lived, it said that island sank in the ocean after he left.
At least.
At least an archaeologist and made an amazing discovery that they discovered a city at the bottom of the ocean. And they said that city is so large that the docks in the city are larger than the major modern shipping docks in Rotterdam and Hamburg. So there's very large city. Maybe that's the original Dwarka. We don't know for sure, but just say it. There's a city sunk under the sea there. So all these places are historical places. Kishna made this journey. And since that time when he made the journey, his childhood friends came from a place called Vrindavan. His stepmother and father, all his childhood friends, they came and met him there at this holy place called Kurukshetra. And it was a big reunion. So this is a festival of reunion, festival of unification, of bringing everyone together. Love and friendship. There's a lot of different messages that this festival does. And we think that it's a message which is very much appropriate here in Bairu Bay because people are being brought.
Together and friendship and loving feelings.
That's really the message of the Rath Yatra, that we're all one family. The name of this form of Krishna is Jagannath. The Jaganna means the universe and Naat means Lord. So Lord of the Universe or Nath means protector of the Universe or Father of the Universe according to how you'd.
Like to translate it.
So it has different meanings. So this word really means that we're all one family under Jagannath. We're all one family under the supreme personality of God. Some people ask why we use the word Godhead anyway. The word God itself is just a kind of title, like President, Prime Minister, where it doesn't really describe so much, but God help I be of that. The Supreme. He's never alone. He's always with his energies, with his friends, with his associates, that there's a whole spiritual world where there's all kinds of beautiful things going on there. So when Krishna came to this planet, he demonstrated to us like a little window into what goes on in the spiritual world. The way we are here in this material world.
This is.
Distant place of the spiritual world. So he wants to invite us to come back to the spiritual world. So these festivals are also opportunities for us to re establish a relationship with Ka in a personal way. And what could be a nicer way than meet with the Lord at a little outing at the beach or 31st of December, we take the Lord around for bringing in the new year, bringing an auspicious and lucky new year for everybody. So the idea is about very simple things that everybody likes to do. Dancing, singing, festivals. A few minutes will be a feast. All these things, if they're done in a spiritual atmosphere, in a spiritual way, they actually help to bring us to a higher Spiritual Majesties. Originally we all are spiritual in our consciousness. But we've fallen into the material world and we identified that we are the spiritual bodies. We're not actually the body, we're the living force that's in the body, the living force. Krishna is also comprised of the same living force, but he's a total living force and we are part of. So each of us has been living for us in the body. When the body gets old or dies or somehow becomes damaged and we can't sustain the life in anymore, then we leave the body. But we never die. We, the living parts of the body never die.
We live forever.
We're all eternal. That's why there's reincarnation. Because when this body is Kanesh, we take a New body. We enter to the womb of a mother. A time when man and woman are having relations. And that's called conception. Then we grow in a new body. After nine, 10 months, we're born of our human body. And like this, then we go out with new life. So we go life after life after life. When we actually get association with someone who really wise in spiritual knowledge, a guru, a spiritual master, a Vaishnava devotee of the Lord. Then we can start to understand what is life all about. What are we meant to do? Because actually as a human being, we're meant to realize ourselves as a living force. And people are losing their mobile phones and their mic sense and donkeys. So many things. But the worst thing is to lose the understanding of who I am, who we actually are. That's the thing that's missing in the modern world is that people that don't actually understand, most people don't know who they are. So rather they're thinking that I'm this hair in this body or I'm growing old, I don't feel old. So many things happen. So the Bhagavad Gita teaches that our body changes, but we never change. Our mind changes. But we, the living force, we don't change. We're trying to help people to come closer, to understand their self, to understand their relationship with the supreme source of everything. To develop a loving and spiritual friendship with all living entities.
The wise.
The chanting is so helpful for them. The chanting is what awakens our living force. Our spiritual force awakens our spiritual consciousness. We need to pray.
Babun. Krishna. Krishna. Krishna.
Hari Krishna.
Krishna. Krishnam. Sam. Daddy Sam.
