This is a YouTube video titled "20030211 || Ratha Yātrā in South India #JayapatakaSwamiArchives" created on October 18, 2023. The content is a multi-speaker spiritual discourse and narration centered around the Ratha Yātrā festival, devotional practices, and the worship of Lord Krishna and Lord Jagannath. Various speakers discuss the significance of chanting, deity worship, festival preparations, and devotional service, reflecting on traditional Vedic culture and personal experiences related to the festival. The video includes detailed explanations of rituals, stories, and the cultural importance of the festival in South India, particularly in Karnataka and Odisha regions. The tone is educational and devotional, aimed at followers and devotees of Krishna consciousness.
Just to pray to Lord Chaitanya to give us a blessing that we can't chant without offending. Because Lord Chaitanya gave us the order. You all chant Hare Krishna without fear. I'll protect you from the offensive. No mind chanting with the blessing of Lord Chaitanya. That that Hare Krishna chanting is much more effective. We have seen people chanting Hare Krishna around India who did not. Who did not use Chaitanya Mahaprabhu's formula. But they are not getting the same ecstasy that our Hare Krishna devotees are getting. Chaitanya Mahabhu's following followers are getting much more ecstasy Hare Krishna by his blessing. Therefore we chant the name of Lord Chaitanya. But we don't chant Lord Chaitanya's name as a Japa. We're not chanting it very long. Few times, five, ten times, four times, three times. Just as an invocation. Generally we are chanting Hare Krishna. Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare Hare Ram Hari Ram Ram Ram Hari Hari. Because Lord Caitanya ordered us to chant Hare Krishna. So it's his order to chant Hare Krishna. He didn't order us to chant my name. His followers advise us chant his name for Ashurba. Then you chant Hare Krishna. So that's why first we are just remembering Lord Caitanya briefly for some time. And then we go on chanting namely Hare Krishna and other names of Krishna. And this way the devotees are getting very good results. Not only in India but all over the world. So this is an open secret. I met people who told me that by chanting Hare Krishna they weren't getting any taste. When I gave them the Hare Krishna, this Apancha Tatva mantra, they told me there was a hell in heaven difference. They are healing totally in heaven. Maybe that hell and heaven, Earth and heaven. Any other question how the Lord has disappeared from the which Lord? Lord Krishna. He went back to his spiritual abode with his body and with his form. In his own original form he just went back Mosala Leela where some hunter shoot him in the foot, Shot him in the foot, then came and surrendered and apologized. So some people think that. Well, Krishna was hit in the foot, so that finished him off. He died like anybody else. But in Bhagavatam it says that after that being hit in the foot, Krishna went back to the spiritual world, went on with his associates. Krishna was hit by so many arrows in Kuruk central world, nothing affected him. One little arrow to the foot is not going to finish me. But there's some other Leela with them. When Krishna Wants to go. He goes. There's a picture in the Bhagavatam. I don't know if you have that picture where he's going back to the spiritual world with his associates. Sudarshan Chakra was looking at the hunter. We don't like to talk about Krishna. Going for us is very distressful. We want to thank of Krishna being with us and coming. It's going is very discussing. So normally we don't like to discuss it. You can read that 11th, 10th, 11th, 12th cantos of Srimad Bhagavatam. All these things are described. We should have that as this verse of Jamma Karma Chamedityam. His appearance also his disappearances from his visible world are all Divyam. It's such Noah Sahib. And he lets him die. But at one point he just winds up his Leela. He goes off the stage.
While all.
Of you are queuing up to collect Prashadam.
Angle Sai sama. It's Sam Hari Sa.
Ra.
Sa jam.
First I offer my regards to their holinesses Banu Swami and Bhakti Vijayanandan Swami Maharajas served every year when he was in Jagannath Puri, he would dance in.
Front of the Rath Yatrakar.
He would dance so enthusiastically that tears.
Of love would come pouring from his eyes.
Just like squirting out from a syringe.
Our O S2.
When he would see Jagannath, he did not see this form. He would see the form of Siama Sundaram. A threefold bending form playing on the.
Flute, enchanting the Gopis.
So this form of Krishna is not so common here in Bangalore.
This Jagannath, Baladev and Subhadra.
This form is very common in Orissa. But this Didi same Krishna same Balaram. But they have this unique appearance. Very beautiful appearance. Even if a Devi had some.
Special.
Appearance, but we should respect the all worshipable deities of the Lord. And certainly this was recognized form because Lord Brahma himself installed Jagannath deity.
So.
This form of Ka comes to give us special mercy. He doesn't take offenses very easily. Even by a little service for Jagannath, you get tremendous benefit. Especially in the vast cities of the world. Jagannath worship is very appropriate because he can be worshiped opulently. He can give unlimited mercy.
How many of you are having some.
Small altar or temple in your house where you're doing puja?
Raise your hand.
Who has? Looks like almost everyone.
How many have Ka in their house?
Oh, very good.
How many are having Jagannath in The house Many. How many are having?
Not so many Gornitai here in the front of Jagannath with the two arms raised, that's Lord Chaitanya, Nithyananda, Lord Chaitanya.
The mercy of Krishna Bhakti.
Very easily.
How many have Narasimhadev?
So like this we shall put. If we put Vishnu Tattva on the top of our altar in the upper position, we worship Vishnu first in one of his or many of his forms. Like Shanganath, Morning Thai, Narsinga, Devrma, Vatsya, Varaha, Krishna, Rama. They're all Vishnu Tattva, different forms of.
The supreme Lord Jagannatha, Krishna, Rama, Puranitai.
So if we regularly offer our worship.
To Ka.
Then that's most auspicious for our spiritual life. By practicing the nine different practices of devotional service. Hearing, chanting, offering, remembering, offering obeisances and prayers.
Shavana, Kirtana, Smarana, Archana Vandana. Father Sevana, Dasya, Sathya, Mataatmani, Vedana.
Worshipping the deity, serving the Lord's feet, becoming a servant of the Lord and being a friend of the Lord and surrendering everything to the Lord.
Bhagwan Dana Baghen.
In this way, by.
Using our senses, using our body and mind for serving the Lord in these different nine ways, then we get purified.
As Bhanumar has mentioned, we get purified from bad karma. Not only that, just like most people. I just read in a newspaper that I forget the percentage.
Something like 80% of all the people who serve in the prison for crimes, when they're released within the first year.
They again commit some serious crime. So the problem is we may commit some mistake, do some prized Chitya to counteract it, some atonement. Then again the tendency will be to do it again and again, not give it up. So what this chanting and what the nine practices of devotional service do is they change our consciousness. So we don't want to commit materialistic activities anymore. We have a desire that rises in.
Our heart to do devotional service for.
Ka more and more. And we get a higher taste for that. Now many of you devotees are. How many of you are initiated? See, quite a number. Uninitiated, how many of you are chanting Hare Krishna and beads. So we have many serious devotees here. And for you, already you're developing a habit of practicing these nine processes of devotional service. Some people today at Rath Yatra procession, I'm sure they're not in the habit of practicing the nine practices of devotional service.
But somehow they Got involved in one or more by the Rath Yatra.
Either they pulled the rat or they listened to the Kirtan. Or they got some prasada. This is Jagannath's mercy that he goes on the street and brings the temple to the people. To attract them to do some devotional service. So we want the people to take it up as a regular practice. But they have to start somewhere. So many people start at these festivals, start at pendle programs like this. Hearing about devotional service. And then get convinced that they should practice it on a regular daily basis. When we see how merciful Lord Chaitanya was to the fallen souls. Then we know that there's hope for us also. In fact, if we have a shelter of the Guru. Some Vaishnava is taking care of us. Then simply by that Vaiava caring for the devotee. Lord Chaitanya has given mercy. Sivananda Sena was coming to Jagannath Puri for the Rath Yatra festival. With a big group of devotees from Bengal. They had to walk for a couple weeks to go from Bengal down to Jagannath Puri. And one dog started going with Sivananda Sena's party. So since the dog came along and he was taking care of all the people trapped. Then he also took care of the dog. So while we were crossing the river, the boatman said. I won't take the dog unless you pay me. Paying for the dog. The ferry charge is to get across the river. He also made sure that the dog got prasadam every day. And had a place to stay sleep. One day the dog didn't come from Prasad. So he sent out a group of devotees to find him. Just like he would any other member of his party if they went missing. So Sivarana said he took so much mercy on the dog. As they were approaching Jagannath Puri, the dog disappeared. They couldn't find the dog anymore. When they got to George Chaitanya. They find that the dog was sitting with Lord Chaitanya. Lord Chaitanya was eating coconut. Coconut Mariel. He was cutting little pieces of the coconut. Sometime eating, sometimes throwing to the dog.
Haribol endo pogato.
How many would you like to get? Some Macon from Lord Chitanya. Half bitten off coconut part bit of other part given. Anyone want so much mercy the Lord Chaitanya gave. After that the dog by getting the Mahaprasad from Lord Chaitanya was liberated. Went back to Godhead. So like that we go with the Rath Yatra. We become party of Lord Jagannath also, he takes us back to the spiritual world. But we don't want to go back alone. So we're trying to take as many people with us as possible. We hope all of you are taking this mercy of Jagannath. The rest of your life will continue to chant Hare Krishna on a daily basis. Everyone. Today they've arranged mah for everyone. So everyone should take prasadam before leaving. And every day we hope you cook and offer your food to Krishna in this way. Eat Krishna Prasad daily. Krishna, Prasadam is food for spiritual people, right? Lions eat meat along with tigers, they eat me. Monkeys, deers, cows, they eat vegetables and fruit. Human beings are supposed to eat prasadam. We are not supposed to only be vegetarian, but we're supposed to eat prasadam, food offered to God. By doing that, then our whole existence becomes purified. So there are a few very simple practices which used to be quite standard in spiritual families. You find that your existence becomes very much different than the ordinary mundane existence. And one becomes very happy and peaceful. He was performing this Rath Yatra festival when he was just six years old. He asked his father, I want Rath Yatra. I want to play Rath Yatra. This was his toy. He wanted a toy Rath Yatra.
With.
Small Jagannathinis that he could pull the rod. That was how he wanted to play. He wanted to play Rath Yatra.
Now you go in children's homes, children's.
Rooms, and you find more. Mainly pistols, monsters, military men, Barbie dolls, all kinds of paraphernalia. He wanted to play Rathyatra. And in his room he had small deities that he would regularly worship and.
Deities that he worshipped.
Even at six years of age. This is what you call a Nitya Siddha. Someone who is born with a desire to serve Ka. And especially that's possible when you're born in the family of devotees. So many of you are devotees, devotee families. So I hope that your children will also get this opportunity to play Ka conscious games like Rath Yantra, Julan and many other transcendental pastimes of the Lord, they can experience it and enjoy it. In Bayatpur, we have many Gurukul students, about 200 students and young people. And in the festival called Julan Jatra, which comes about two weeks before Janmastami, all the children have a lot of fun. Every class, every neighborhood, they make a small jewel for pulling Radha and Krishna. And in front they make garden scenes. One year they made electric train carrying Mahaprasad to the deities. The Other group, they made a pond in front of the Lord and they had a little boat running by electric motor. And on the boat Radha and Krishna were swinging. So they have little competition, kind of who can do something nice for the deities. And even they use maybe some other toys, but they use them in a KA conscious way way.
It was very beautiful, very interesting.
So like this, we hope that everyone will get more and more inspired and we can put on more and more of these kind of festivals. I'm very grateful for all the devotees who have worked to make this possible. I know just about two weeks ago they asked me whether I could come today for the Rath Yatram. That they wanted to have it today because Hokanath Maharaj would be here with his devotees from Maharashtra. And I said yes, but you can imagine in two weeks, terrains, candles, permits, rocks, facade, posters, so many things. It must have been a very rushed job. And they must have been working very, very hard to get everything arranged. I think we should all give them a very big hand. For all the organizers. If you like these kind of festivals, you'd like to help with the next one. Contact the organizers and tell them you like what service you can do next time they're going to have a festival. These festivals are meant for us to do service. More people get opportunity to do service. Everyone should be facilitated and they can do something if they have a desire. Thank you all again for being here tomorrow night. We'll also be here tomorrow, the whole.
Day, almost tomorrow morning and also evening.
Okay.
Look forward to seeing you.
It's very late, so I don't want.
To speak any longer.
I want you to be able to rest up and hear some more tomorrow.
From all the great speakers that are here.
Nala, Belika, into Kantigay, Nana.
They also tell the program in English.
Sam it, Ram it.
Mango leaves, all to welcome the Lord. Plagues, Patakas, garlands and painted signs and slogans all combine to shade the sunshine. The highways, subways, lanes, markets and public meeting places were all thoroughly cleansed and then moistened with scented water and to welcome the Lord. Fruits, flowers and unbroken seeds were strewn everywhere. Scented waters prepared by distilling flowers like rose and Kiara were requisitioned to wet the roads, streets and lanes of Dwarakadam. Such places, along with the marketplace and public meeting places were thoroughly cleansed. From the above description, it appears that the city of Dwarqada was considered considerably big, containing many highways, streets and public meeting places with parks, gardens and reservoirs of water, all very nicely decorated with flowers and fruits and to welcome the Lord. Such flowers and fruits with unbroken seeds of grain were also strewn over the public places. Unbroken seeds of grain or fruit in the seedling stage were considered auspicious and they were still so used by the Hindus in general on festive days. Green sprouts considered auspicious. Dwari dwari Grihanamcha, Dadyaksha, Tatafalikshudi, Alangritam, Poorna, Kumbaya. In each and every door of the residential houses, auspicious things like curd, unbroken fruits, sugar cane and full water pots with articles for worship, incense and candles were all displayed. Purport va shla prabhupada. The process of reception according to the Vedic Ra rites is not at all dry. The reception was made not simply by decorating the roads and streets as above mentioned, but by worshiping the Lord with requisite ingredients like incense, lambs, flowers, sweets, fruits and other palatable eatables according to one's capacity. All were offered to the Lord and the remnants of the foodstuff of were distributed among the gathering citizens. So it was not like a dry reception of these modern days. Each and every house was ready to receive the Lord in a similar way. And thus each and every house on the roads and streets distributed such remnants of food to the citizens. And therefore the festival was successful. Without distribution of food no function is complete, and that is the way of Vedic culture. Thus ends the Bhaktivedanta Swami translation purport to text 13, 14 and 15 of chapter 11 Canto 1 Srimad Bhagavatam in the manner of Lord Ka's entrance into dwarves. So we have this receive Krishna Bala Day Subhadra here in Garden City, the Rath Yatra festival. I thought it was good to meditate on how the Dwarka Vasis received the Lord. Every house was decorated with auspicious items. Sugar cane stores, banana trees. With the banana we have here bananas in the front. Also here in the Panda we have bananas. The bananas should be taken out from the root, not cut. The many very auspicious things, grains, fruits, scented water. Whenever the rath goes, for every few baths there was the reception committee responsible to clean the street center roads offer a reception. They do this in Delhi Rath Yatra. They organize reception committees every few hundred meters. And each committee they have built a little dais, small platform where they receive the Lord, give flowers, offerings and then from there they distribute prasadam to all the public. There's maybe, I don't know how many, 20 or 30 of these reception spots for a very opulent Rath yatra with profuse Prasad distribution. They do some big stunts also. Like jhole flowers fragments from helicopter. We threw flowers on the bridge. That's modern touch. In the previous times the devas would come and throw flowers. If you can arrange some devas to come and throw flowers, it's better. Less expensive than helicopter, less dangerous. This idea of involving everyone in the reception of the Lord. Something very beautiful and very wonderful. One time I saw on the news broadcast the reception of some head of state, the head of government coming to Delhi. They sit on a raised platform and then they get. They have to salute. There's a 19 or 21 gun salute. Boom boom, boom, boom, boom, boom boom going on. Everyone stands while there's booming. Then that's it. National anthem is played.
Whatever.
Then okay, that's it. Very dry actually. But here we can see that there was a spontaneous love. Everyone was really welcoming Lord Krishna to Dwarka. So they all decorated their whole home, cleaned their roads, made offerings, gave out charity and prasadam and these fruits to everyone. Nowadays even India, almost everyone can afford fruit. So they give out some fruit to the people. To celebrate the coming of Jagannath is not difficult. So it showed here. This very wonderful mood was there when Ka appeared in Dwarka. Everyone in Dwarka is a devotee of Ka. Since here Karnataka is the land of Krishna. Udabi Krishna is Lord. He is being worshipped there in Udupi. So he in the garden city. This should be the should try to dedicate the whole city over to Lord Krishna.
