20030514 || Śrīmad Bhāgavatam 10.7.6 (Kṛṣṇa kills Śakaṭāsura demon) || Śrī Māyāpur, India

A spoken lecture by Jaya Pataka Swami (recorded in Śrī Māyāpur) reflecting on Śrīmad Bhāgavatam pastimes (Śakaṭāsura) and defending reading Puranic accounts as history rather than mere "mythology." The speaker critiques Western/colonial translations (e.g., Max Müller), links scripture to modern parapsychological phenomena (regression therapy, near-death and out-of-body experiences) as evidence for subtle/astral bodies, and recounts devotional anecdotes (Ratha-yātrā chariot-building, meeting Jayānanda) to illustrate transformational practice. Tone: devotional-explanatory with critical and anecdotal elements.
All these things have been shown in modern cinema. Graphic special effects, which will be a very interesting. So there's some people that think this are all mythologists. They can't figure out how can a demon be in the shape of a card? How can a little child knock over a cart? Obviously there's some mythology. Could it be true? Right. That's because they're very small things. The supreme Lord can do anything. He can dry things and absorb things and make things, but do anything he wants just with a touch of his hand and a glance of his eyes. I was mentioning how when I was teaching in Canada, we started to cultivate the Indian community. And on a Saturday we rented a church. There's many churches. They let you rent their church or other functions. And the west and stuff, not so fanatical. And so there were all the Hindus that gathered together. Then I was telling pastimes and different explanations. And then the head of the Hindu group stood up and said, I want to thank Prabhu here for this wonderful explanation of our Hindu mythology. And I never heard anybody, or maybe, or before maybe, now they introduce. And I was really upset because here I was dedicating my life to following the shastras. You know, Bhagavatam is a Purana. It's idihas. It's a history. I hear the gentleman, he was calling it a mythology was like some kind of a nice legendary fictionist book or something from old times. Very unscientific. So I was very offended. I think I blasted the person. They ruined the preaching. I didn't know. Later I found out, you see, that this Max Muller, famous German Indologist, some of his confidential letters that he wrote to his colleagues in Europe, they were revealed when he wrote and he said, we're trying to convert all the Hindus to Christians. We're having a very hard time because these Ravanas are very learned in philosophy and they. You can't really deal with it. They have all the answers. So my plan is I'm gonna personally learn Sanskrit and I'll translate the books myself because most of the non Brahmanas don't know Sanskrit. So I'll translate the books into English in such a way that I'll undermine the faith of the Hindus in their own scripture. And this way we can easily convert them to Christians. Praise God. He's very highly respected as Max Muller. Go on. And Calcutta. And they think that he did a great service for the Hindus, like the Indian culture, translating the ancient Indian text into modern languages. But he would specifically translate the Things in a distorted way. Like he would translate Purana as mythology, deities as idols. Unfortunately, because for the Indians it didn't have the big effect he was hoping for. Because in their mind, whatever, he would just translate it back into their own language. Oh, this is, this is English for Purana mythology. And this idol means what is English for, you know, worshipable deity? This is our idol. But they were thinking they. But then, you know, when the Christians are here, what should be an idol? The Bible, it says do not worship any idols, there are false gods. So then, you know, it didn't really have that widespread effect. Maybe it had a limited, certain effect and he was able to convert some people to Christian, but it was his intention. So people, I realized later that innocently they use these terms, they don't really know even so much what it means in their mind there. They don't really think of it in the same way we might in the west who know what mythology means. Although maybe some people in the long run know. They think like this is just mythology and they don't have so much faith in their shastra because of that. It took a long time. And so now we're trying to. Prabhupada is very explicit, to use the right words, Prana ikihasana. It's a history and it's not many people that are thinking it that this is like some unsubstantiated fairy tales that are handed out. And it's very unpleasant. And especially for the devotees around the world, they definitely, we've been trained that these are histories and from that point of view when you read them, it's very relishable. They think it's just some kind of story, tales, so many tales. It's just interesting story. When they take it that this is about ka and what this means, that has a much deeper significance in hearing about it gives one fancy level pleasure and bliss. So this is the thing that maybe some people will find this very difficult pastimes demons and magic and ghosts. Because in the modern scientific realm these things are not so much acceptable. Maybe the parapsychological studies and parapsychological scientists, they have experienced many things and acquired many things, but they're not considered so much in the mainstream of the science. We had a seminar in Atlanta some years ago with Bhakti Tirtha Maharaj and there were two professors, a psychologist, Dr. Holder and he was psychologist and one other person. This is a psychiatrist, a psychologist, I'm not sure, but he was, he said he had done 10,000 regressions you know what regressions are? Or they take people through hypnosis and they bring them back to their. No, you're under hypnosis. You're 18 years old, you're 16, you're 12, you're 8, you're 5, 4, 3, 2, 1. You're in the womb of your mother now. You are in your previous life. You're going to not. You're just going to see things, you're not going to feel them. You're going to tell me what you see. Sometimes you take them back and they start speaking French and all kinds of calling. The person doesn't know if she keeps them in English, tell me in English. And then they take them back and they start to describe what they see. So he was explaining very scientifically how there are many, many cases that they took and that they videoed them, they researched them, and there was no other explanation for how this person knew what was going on except they had lived a previous life. That was his obvious conclusion. Also, he said they had other experiences which he would also research. NDE, near death experiences and OOVs, out of body experiences. And he explained how there was some Russian person that had, was operated on there in Atlanta and then had left the body while on the operating table and was looking down at the doctors and they were watching, you know, the heart, monitoring vibrators, and he's watching the whole thing. And they say, English, big dad. So somehow he went out of the window, took a look, and on the ledge of the window there was some kind of garbage, like somebody left one of their masks or something or some T shirt, I don't know. There was a shoe. Okay, shoe. And something was there. And then he went back, the tooth went back into his body and boop, boop, boop, boop, all everything's back to normal. And he told the doctors, you will share this hour. And so in this way, he told them what happened. You know, I left the body and I was watching you. You were operating. Oh, you just heard our voices. You were just, you know, you heard us through the, you know, the, what do you call the medicine, the anesthesia. They said, well, no, but one thing happened is I went out the window and I saw there was this shoe, you know, underneath the ledge. And they looked and they said, we can't even see the ledge. You can't look from them. So they had to really lean out someone, whoa, look, there was a shoe. There's no way that he could have known that unless you obviously didn't hang out of the Window when he was a patient, insecure. So then they had to. Well, something must have happened there. And while this was going on, my mother from my previous ashram priest on the United States, that life, she was president Atlanta. And she raised her hand, Mother Lori, and she said, you know, I never realized this. I also had this experience. I had an anorexia and they were operating on my head. Like, what happened? One time she came here to Mayampur. The first time when she met Prabhupada, she slipped when she was walking the Ganges, and she fell into the Ganges right onto the top of her head. And then some devotee pulled her out. Then she told Prabhupada what happened. And he said, because of that, now I hear thou nothing can kill you. She's protected by the young man. Then right here at the top, she had a strip. And so they were operating. One of her veins busted the top of her head. And she was there sitting up in the operating table under anesthesia. And she realized she had gone out of her body, looking down at the doctors and watching them operate. But she never realized that it was her that was seeing the whole thing. So she was revealing all this in this seminar while finally she figured out what was going. She always saw that. And she didn't realize it was herself that was watching herself. It was an interesting revelation. So like this kind of parapsychologists, they're considered a little bit far out, but they actually, by the standard. Well, there must be some scientific explanation for all those things. Actually, the very obvious explanation of understanding that there's a subtle body in front of gross body. Because they can't. They haven't come to grips with that yet. They're not able to accept that. I'm trying to look for some purely chemical explanation. So this is the kind of thing we're facing. You get those kind of, you know, very rigid people. So they were. Well, this is all this mythology. How could there be a demon in the form of a cart? But to probably extent, it was like ghosts. Of course, they didn't believe in ghosts. Most people know that ghosts exist and they're haunted by them. So. So then go sponsored the cart and was waiting to dive in on Krishna. Krishna does Raska wants to kill me. I'll give the card a kick. It sends the demon out, liberates it, and the cart goes fine. So this remains the day in the pastimes of Ka Sakatasura's out of the kitchen. One more demon, though, for the devotees. This is all like you know, chai bhua shikishaki for all these scientists. So this is what we're facing now gradually as the modern science starts to find out all these thorough things like out of body experiences and near death experience. They don't really have an explanation that makes any sense anyway where the Bhagavad Gita explanation that we have a cello body can leave the gross body. Hemanau came back and it makes quite perfect sense. It's very logical, reasonable. So then when you start to see that what the data say makes a lot more sense, especially when you get into these areas than what the modern science usually says. They don't have any explanations of history. This is one of those unexplainable phenomena which you will surely find out there's a reason for this. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Roxanne, tell us what's in the next stellar system after 10,000 years when the rocket ship that somehow reaches the rustic guarantee, the radio works better even now it goes up on the crane. Who's going to be around anyway to hear about it? So if you want to find out things beyond a normal observable phenomenon, the Srimad Bhagavatam is a wealth, a wealth of very amazing information. For the devotees, they take it, what's the big deal? You know, the facility is saying going to be really causing some indigestion because they're trying to figure everything out in a very external phenomenal world rather than seeing the phenomenal world as having various levels and dimensions. In Calcutta we had this seminar back to this being world synthesis of science and religion. And there the Nobel Prize winner for physics, what's his name, who discovered the laser. All the scientists and all these Nobel Prize words, names like, you know, different saints, I just go on mirage and race Congresses. Every 10 years he was confiding. So you must be wondering what am I doing here with religion? We physicists, we have reached the frontier of science. Come to the subatomic particles of quantum. These particles don't act according to classical physics, what I can understand. Therefore they start to assume that they are consciousness. It's interesting that when you read the Srimad Bhai Vritam explanation on how that creation comes and that they go from that mahatatva and it's the pradhan and the mahatatva is being the kind of universal consciousness. And from there how things start to gel and take different subtle and inverse forms, you can see some of that. Well, underlying that consciousness is the basis of this material creation. The material consciousness is the Main then that foundation is in the total unmanifested material energy which is ultimately coming from the spiritual. So when you read the human Bible, it seems that physicists might be getting close. They're onto but they don't really know how to explain it and how it could be. So therefore, because they can't figure it out on their own and they want to hear from the religionists and the different spiritualists and try to see if they've got any clues, any ideas, anything to add that might help their research. So that's what he was doing. So 20 years ago someone told me I've been sitting with all your people and tell them they're nuts. But now I am here. That was 1987, January 1st, is it in the Prabhupada centennial. So we do have something to offer. I heard that when they had. I think it was. I had some scientists from Harvard or somewhere do a study of the data knowledge available from a scientific perspective. And they found that there's some valuable information that can be gotten from the data useful for various. What do you call it? Not camps or various areas of science. Anyway, that's what we have to face. Of course the boys maybe were unscientific and very simple. So we believe in the Puranas and all these things. But there's a conflict blindly. We can understand logically why it makes sense that all these things can happen. Why Ka? Although he's appearing like a little baby, he's still the Supreme Lord. He's controlling all the universe as if he wants. Even although his body appears soft like a little baby, little soft baby body just touches something unlimited force on that he can do whatever he wants. Material energy is totally under his control. Even though he just assumed this little child formed for the sake of pastimes and exchanging love with a devotee who sees him as her baby. It's really. Krishna's pastime is profoundly wonderful and very, very deep. They'll have difficulty understanding the pockets that can figure out how Ka assumes this small human like form. And even while externally appearing to be on that dimension, he simultaneously whatever he wants to exert things from the higher dimension. Also I wanted to share some little pastimes today to disappear and say of our dear, our saint is not a saint. Jayananda Prabhu Raghat. He was a saint. He dedicated his life of serving the Lord, started the Rathayashras in the west. And he's actually. I mean he's my Bharatvanta Pradaksha Guru. Really. When I first Came to the temple and nobody really gave me too much time. I went to the back of the San Francisco Temple in 1968. There was a group of maybe six to eight devotees building something. And this very smiling devotee came up to me and said, hi, what's your name? I said, oh, my name said, Jay. I said, hey, that's my name too. I'm Jay. Abandoned. And he said, you know, we're building here, building here a chariot. You know how to build too. Really simple. He first wanted to check out how useful it would be then to get all of our standard producing the air finish this scrap. So then he gave me some nail and said, here, just hold it where the little X is I was holding. So you know how you're going to hold the nail on so many hammers that once it gets in the wood, you quickly move your finger, otherwise your finger is going to be smashed. So then I successfully held the nail until he could hammer it into that wood. Then he said, imam, ya saw, expert is your one. Honestly, while you did that, you hold that nail like you're a real expert. Everybody likes to be appreciated. Even I thought I was kind of overdoing it. Big deal. You know how to hammer to hammer, like see if you put some X's hammer the down there. So next thing I would do, we got. And I mean, yeah. Then he, you know, he said, you know, show me this picture of the Rath Yatra and Kuri million people and everything. That gigantic chariot. Why don't I build one of those? It's amazing. How many years is that going to take? Oh, seven days. We're going to do by next, you know, next Tuesday, Saturday going to have the right hand. How is it possible? Oh, by Krishna's mercy, we need your help. We're going to everyone who pulls this chariot and sees it, I'll get liberated from reincarnation and earth and like save millions of people and change the world better than that to do right now. So the next thing I was there hammering away and saw him. And then the whole time he's telling about this Guru Prabhupada, how wonderful Prabhupada it was. I can't remember if it was all the things he said, but I just remember he was constantly encouraging everybody and smiling and talking. It was a very, very, very uplifting association. So every day I was going back there building the car and I remember many wonderful things happened in that week. So in that week, probably the most wonderful thing happened was meeting Jaya Pooh. And of course Getting the Hare Krishna Maha mantra from some devotees and chanting. So after the. The day of the Rath Captiva. And I thought, okay, these very special people. This is the kind of yoga I do. I looked for so many yogis. Most of them, I call them all Bobis. I went to one guy who published a book on astral projection. I went to see him, he was cooking a fish in his back kitchen. And I was onto the back of the house, happened to live there in San Francisco. I said, well, I read your book and I wanted to meet the author. You know, the great author with an aviator and astral projection and get some personal guidance. He said, Took me in his little room and told me to look at it. This one I confided in. I wrote that book. And when I wrote it, I was lying right now on the ground. He was a real sweet bad guy. I thought, you know, it's not really the person that seems to be able to guide me, to get back, to achieve a real understanding of what life is. It's like this. I was going all around trying. I thought I'd get the book, find that author. Everybody was like, all funny stories. So then finally, when I met these devotees and tell me about Prabhupada, I want to meet Prabhupada. And I want to say, I was told, you know, he told me, if you want to try this out, you want to learn how to swim? Here, go in the water, dive in, try it out. Don't just put your toe in, do it. Let me do it. I'll do it for two months. Manage, you know, my mind just goes. I'm like, what are you doing? You're crazy. No, I'll do it for two months. Give it a try. I tried so many things. It works out and I'll stick with that. Something like two months. That was in the whole skeptical mind, you know, because I never left since then. I saw Jaya Nandava. He shaved me up on the day of the morning and, and shaving up. And then I went to the phone. Mother Lisa said, he's been coming to temple for like, I don't know how many months a year. Noticed that I had been there for one week. And he saw I was shaved up, pulled my car, fired up, you know. He said, wow, this guy did that. Next day he shaved up. So the really trying nothing to do is so much for the sensation. I was all new, of course, that I don't think I could. But I had a second opportunity to associate with him. By that time, I'D been two years in the building when Paul had called me to LA to send me to India. He was also in Los Angeles then, and I was going out with him in the morning on the flower run. He'd go to Beverly Hills and do some flower picking from the mansions of wealthy millionaires. Unfortunately, one guy shot at us that morning. He said, I think he won't do that anymore, any of his bullets to get shot. But I heard, you know, a few guests and he was just so enthusiastic. It was like, you know, one day after the big Sunday pizza tour, Dee, we're going to have a festival. We're going to have some fun. Come with me. And I just said, kitchen cleanup.
