Recorded Śrīmad Bhāgavatam/Bhagavad-gita class (June 18, 2003) by Jaya Pataka Swami. The speakers read and translate Bhagavad-gita As It Is (12.13–14) and explain the transcendental qualifications of a pure devotee—non-envious, kind, free from false ego, equal in happiness and distress, tolerant, self-controlled, and fixed in devotional service. The talk contrasts material modes of happiness with devotional service, offers sociological and humanitarian anecdotes (e.g., study finding Bangladeshis report high life-satisfaction, work in Cambodian refugee camps, large banana donation), and emphasizes practical Krishna‑conscious activities (chanting, temple/restaurant service, charity, parenting as service).

Translation Behind Divine Grace this Bhagavad gita as it is 12th chapter 1314 verse 1 who is not envious, but is a kind friend to all living entities who does not think himself a proprietor and is free from false ego who is equal in both happiness and distress, who is tolerant, always satisfied, self controlled and engaged in devotional service with determination, his mind and intelligence fixed on me. Such a devotee of mind is very dear to me. Translation of Repetition One who is not envious, but is a kind friend to all living entities who does not think himself a proprietor and is free from false evil both in happiness and distress. Who is tolerant, always satisfied. Always satisfied. Self control. Self control and engaged. Coming again to the point of pure devotional service, the Lord is describing the transcendental qualifications of a pure devotee in these two verses. A pure devotee is never disturbed in any circumstances, nor is he envious of anyone, nor does the devotee become his enemies and enemy. He thinks this person is acting as my enemy due to my own past misdeeds. So it is better to suffer than to protest. In the Srimad Bhagavatam 10.14.8 it is said, it is stated, whenever a devotee is in distress, has fallen into difficulty, he thinks that it is the Lord's mercy upon him. He thinks, thanks to my past misdeeds I should suffer far far greater then I am suffering now. So it is by the mercy of the Supreme Lord that I am not getting all the punishment I am due. I am just getting a little by the mercy of the supreme personality of Gandhi. Therefore he is always calm, quiet and patient. Despite many distressful conditions. A devotee is also always kind to everyone, even to his enemy. Nirma means that a devotee does not attach much importance to the pains and troubles pertaining to the body because he knows perfectly well that he is not the material body. He does not identify with the body. Therefore he is freed from the conception of false evil. And is equal place in happiness and distress. He is tolerant and he is satisfied with whatever comes by the grace of the Supreme Lord. He does not endeavor much to achieve something with great difficulties. Therefore he is always driving. He is a completely perfect mystic because he is fixed in the instructions receive from the spiritual master. Because his senses are controlled, he is determined. He is not swayed by false arguments because no one can lead him from the fixed determination of devotional service. He is fully conscious that Ka is the Eternal Lord, so no one can disturb him. All these qualifications enable him to fix his mind and intelligence entirely on the Supreme Lord. Such a standard of devotional service is undoubtedly very rare. But a devotee becomes situated in that stage by following the regular principles of devotional service service. Furthermore, the Lord says that such a devotee is very dear to him. The Lord is always pleased with all his activities and full Ka consciousness. Thus ends the Vati Dagnta Swami translation purport to the text 13 and 14 of the 12th chapter Bhagavad Gita as it is as a matter of devotional service. The Prabhupada explains in these two verses what Krishna is describing pure devotional service. This morning, last night somebody was asking me what are the qualifications of a pure devotee. I have a bit of a soft throat. Maybe you can sit. The gentleman can sit. Everybody else can hear me. Front row seat. It's $2,000. And this is a standard of devotional service you should try for aspire for. You can hear back there.
So.
It'S very great holidays. Haruna Non envious towards all living entities. Normally in this material world envy is very common. Somebody else does better than we do. We want to pull a person down and something like sometimes there's a big pile of worms that sends me one always trying to crawl on top of the other one to go on the top. Then when he's on the top then he thinks now I am the king of the worms. And someone else pulls him down and climbs up. This is the worm society. But generally that's almost what's happening in the material world is everybody trying to climb up to the top and push the other person down. But devotee, that's not that nature because they're not trying to compete on that material level. They're actually trying to serve Krishna, which is a totally different situation. So they're very kind to all living entities. They're a well wisher for all living entities. Merciful, kindly. The devotee wants to see the conditioned souls deliver separate from the material suffering. We're in this material world as a kind of an illusion. But once you're in seems quite real. So the suffering that we experience in the material world, even if it's like a dream, but it appears quite real. Suffering. Have any of you ever suffered in your light? Seems few of you have experienced suffering. Kishna describes the material world as a dukkha loya laloya means like the house of and dukkha means suffering. So duk aloy is like house or place of suffering. So generally that's what's happening. But sometimes you get a little. It's like now the cloud has opened and little sun has come. But then all day long it was like cloudy morning this morning. But now we have a little sun comes. So like that a little bit they're going to some happiness. Then again cloudy, like in some countries, single is never cloudy. Sometimes they get sunny. So in this material world everybody wants to be happy. But they don't know the formula for happiness because they're thinking that the way they can be happy is by increasing their samskara. The more they can give gratification to the senses and they're going to become more happy. That's an interesting phenomenon because now in the world since we have all the modern communications and they have studies, some scientists, social scientists somewhere is always studying science. So recently some people study who are the most satisfied people in the world, who have the best sense of well being. The Danish people, the Swedish, the Swiss, the Americans. The people with all the wealthiest countries in the world, with all the modern American, they found that they weren't the people that felt satisfied with life the most. I thought they were the study of the whole world. And number one was Bangladesh, which is maybe the top 10 poorest countries in the world. Not the poorest, but maybe in the top 10, I don't know. They say that maybe because they don't expect much. So whatever they get, they think it's a blessing of God. There's no big expectations. We have so many expectations. It doesn't work out the way we want. Another reason interesting. Another scientist did a study that because now we have computers, we have all the technology. So how have these improved the quality of our life? The sense of quality of. But then also this thing, people didn't feel that the quality of life had increased. It's just like another. All this inventions. Hydrapad was saying that in order to have the technology you have to work harder. In order to work harder, then you have. Your quality of life is going down. If you have to work harder. As soon as you get a computer within six months or three months or two months, it's already obsolete when you get the next one. So it's a formula for dissatisfaction. If I only have a Pentium three, I have to have a Pympian four and you have a tention four, I have to have now the lowest one centurion or something else that one's got. So like it always. But the devotee, they're not disturbed under all these different circumstances, because that's not their standard of happiness. In fact, devotee is very happy serving reconditioned souls and trying to help them to get out of the material world. Service is our dharma. It's our. Our constitutional position. Was asked. Actually. Sanatan Goswami, he was the prime minister at that time of Bo Chaitanya of the empire under the emperor Hussein Shah. So he wasn't like. I mean, our modern prime ministers are voted for four or five years and then they have to go out for real. As long as he did his job right and the king was satisfied with him, he could stay upon us. In fact, the king was so satisfied, he didn't want to let him go. He wanted out. He wanted to leave and go to Vrindavan. And the king arrested him because he didn't want him to go. He said, when you change your mind, they push you back as the prime minister. Until then, you're under arrest. At the end of either prime minister or elder, it was detached. Then somehow he went to Lord Chaitanya and he said, people call me a big Pandya because of my tradition, everything. They call me a very learned person. But actually I'm a fool because I don't know the basic essential knowledge of life. When. So please tell me, who am I? How many people in this world know who they are in terms of real spiritual nature? So what she tell you? In a very. In a sutra form, just like a coded form, one short mantra. He said, Jeevan salu kara. That the eternal nature of that living entity is. Or that the nature of the living entity is eternally the eternal. And there the servant of Ka. All servants of Krishna, the supreme Lord. We're eternal by nature. If we understand this much, then you won't be unhappy anymore. Remember the song we were singing in our safari? The bhakti? No kaku song. So Jiva Krishna does. If we know that the Jiva, the living entity, is servant of Ka Krishna, if we believe in that, us put our faith in that, then we more suffering. It's like an explain to me the body. I'm a servant even if I suffer anymore. I did so many bad karmas in my life. I deserve so much suffering. Krishna is giving me a small token, small sample of the suffering I really deserve. And I show up. Once he cut his finger one drop of blood pain. He said, actually I should have my head cut off. But instead only one drop came. So it's like that. He has a devotee as serving Ka. Therefore the karmic reactions are reduced. Sometimes we get a little bit just to remind us that this material world is not the place we want to stay right now. It's too nice. And I think, okay, stay here. So we have to be reminded. Sometimes we're so what the material world is all about. This bhakti gitl Kapi would preach through these songs in Bengali. It's very easy Bengali. Anybody can understand that. Maybe some of our musicians here will compose songs in Danish and Swedish and English. Some of the them make it easier for people to understand the philosophy. Normally the people who are in the mortal goodness, they want to serve others. They must perform beneficial acts for society in a material sense. But at least they want to help others. And because of that, that can actually feel happy. And people in the mode of passion, they want to get some immediate gratification. So they try to get sense gratification. Initially that makes the senses feel good. Then after some time that turns into some kind of distressful condition. Either the supply chain is cut or somehow they're afraid that someone's trying to take whatever is here. They say maybe somebody is very attached to association with some particular friend. But then after some time the friend either becomes negative so it doesn't work out. Someone else comes and wants to steal your friend away or their friend somehow goes away, whatever. Then you're put into lamentation. Usually there's hankering fear lamentation we go through. It's a constant situation, especially in the model guide. The more of ignorance. They do things for crazy reasons. So they're not happy. Their happiness is anyway another kind of suffering. So they were having just like recently they were a study that came out in London. How to tell serial killer. So when you start talking about violence and torture and suffering, that doesn't bother any normal person to hear about something horrible. Something people subjected to some violent situation. They feel really bad about that. There's people, they look at their eye and say serial killer. Anyway, unless they read that I won't be affected. Some kind of anger and sad one of ignorance. Some Strange kind of irrational purpose of it that says they are not happy in the beginning or the end. Depression, insanity. So all these two modes of nature, they're conditioning us goodness. We get conditioned by material happiness. Someone becomes very goody woody and wants to help it but doesn't actually have a spiritual perspective. So it doesn't really.
Just like.
I was at the Cambodian refugee camps. It was 1970 something and we were trying to distribute posadam there to the refugees. That was in Thailand but then so much foreign aid was coming in. But they were feeding everybody dried fish and things. It was trying to help people. But they were giving them all kinds of non vegetarian. These people were Buddhists so they respected vegetarian. Of course they'll eat whatever. Was kind of strange that to talk to the heads of the refugee camp. There was hundreds of thousands of people there and they mentioned that actually what we need is if you could set up a Hare Krishna restaurant. Like today I went to the Hare Krishna restaurant and give food to the world workers. Because all the people that come here to serve the refugees they all burn out after a very short time and then we get a big turnover. But if we had a high Christian restaurant here, I think money would stay longer. So that was their request. It was interesting. The devotees, they're in a mode of pure goodness. They're serving others. Not just from the sense of they want to help people. Some material sentiment but they know where old people are. They want to help them to get out of the cycle of birth and death. They want them to re establish their eternal relationship with ka. So it actually gives one in their spiritual hand happiness. It's not just the momental things. Very hard to have pure good. They mix it up. Maybe they want to help people but then they end up doing it by serving their needs and things. So they're doing a bad karma to help people. Where the devotees, they're helping people with the surya through asylum. So you're helping materially and spiritually. When I went to that cant and I was it was with Rupa Noga and Balabunta and they were dressed in suits and ties and talking to the people. I was just the person to bring them out there. So I was walking around the camp and taking it out while they were doing the negotiations. So then I went over to the. I went over to the Buddhist temple and all the Buddhist monks they received me. They said oh welcome, you are a Buddha. Actually that's how they address it monks, you're going to be a future Buddha. I feel so they asked how long I've been a monk. And I told them, well, that time I've been a monk since 68, so it's about 10 years. So for them 10 years a month, it's pretty good monk, five years a monk. So that's really good. So I told them. I explained to them that we perform at hand the meditation, really chant. And that's also part of their tradition. So I said, when you chant this particular mantra, you start to feel very happy. And then they said, could you make a demonstration for us? Put them in a tent, you know, it's like a burgery tent, you know. So they had a bell that they used for calling people for. I was banging on that and I was chanting and doing the swami step chanting. They're all watching, you know. I said, look, that's not how it works. I can't. This channel alone, you have to all sing with me. So then I had the whole. I had like, it was 400 monks and nuns and different lame people there. We got them all clapping their hands and chanting Hare Krishna. So the other two came with their suits and tights. Well, we didn't work out or anything because they want us to to a restaurant. They don't want to take our food for life. I mean, they came with a surprise. They had the 400 months challenge.
And.
So they really appreciated it. The monks also, they appreciated. They called vipassana Buddha also recommended chanting or doing some meditation. So we do actually, I mean, we go everywhere. We try to help people in different circumstances. Bhabhu said, don't even have to go only to like distress areas because everybody suffers. So this is a question of marketing, how we reach the mercy to the people. So, you know, I was explaining this morning how bhakti, siddhanta, sarasatanga, whenever a devotee would come in and pay obeisance to him, he would fold his hands and say that sesame tassa astini means I am your servant. He is a big spiritual master that has macharya. He has tens of thousands of disciples. But he is approaching everyone that has servant. The mood of the devotee is one of service. In the material world. Everybody wants to be like the boss, the your boss you become. That's considered a profession. Maybe someone starts off the head of their company or they become an alderman or some councilman of the city. They want to come up with a number of parliament minister, prime minister. Finally somebody wants to become an avatar, wants to become an incarnation of that somehow always trying to move up for the devotee. They're happy to be Dasana Das Lo. Chaitanya was asking who are you? And he said Gopi Bhakti, come away. Odasa Dasa Madhasana and the servant of the servant of the servant of Krishna, husband of the Gopis. So the mother Sanyasi and mother Bihasta. Mother Bhava, you're a servant of the slave. And actually that's the greatest joy to be a servant. Actually that's what we're all doing. And I see here how the mothers are serving their children and fathers are serving their children. How the husband is caring for his family and how the wife is caring for the family. Everyone by nature, our whole way we interact with each other is by all things service. But if we have a mentality condescending off of some stuff like really what I want is that I should be served naturally we're going to get frustrated. If we really have a service attitude then everyone will become very happy. So that's possible in relation to Ka because we are his service. When we see everything as are coming down from Ka then we can remain equal place in all kinds of circumstances. If you think that you're the body, then actually anything goes wrong with the body. That's like a very critical thing. But if someone knows that not the body, then even if there's some problem. I was just talking yesterday one of my disciples as cancer. When I first found out, it was really traumatic. But then after two days she discovered she's taking some cures side by side. She's just trying to prepare herself. That adheres to the words go back to Krishna. Krishna consciousness. The devotee is hellbrand a much more. Try to keep our body. We don't neglect our body.
Try to.
Take care of everything. But we know that sooner or later the body is going to perish. But we don't perish. The real self never acts. So because we don't identify with the body then we are free from that conception or misconception of false evil. We can balance in our happiness. So that's the training on how to be calm. Somebody achieves this, they become naturally joyful. Some of them still may come up and try to preach crazy things, false arguments. Because they're experiencing joy in Krishna consciousness. They're experiencing the nectar of Ka consciousness. They don't get swayed, they don't get deviated. I don't know. It was like some devotee, I don't have devotees. Some guest came and started picturing the problem. Why it is. I think it should be like this and started expressing her own opinion. Prabhupada said, listen, you're welcome to your opinion but I have my own guru. I see that many of these qualities. I see here many of these devotees, even devotees who may have been initiated, they have so many of these qualities. The problem mentioned that the devotees and the KA Conscious movement they are fears of all. Some of them may be right. Summer it was hot with.
When they.
Ship the dynamics off actually they ship them from some shipped from Ecuador and exam the GBC of Ecuador. GBC assigned Ecuador in South America. That's one of the biggest banana producing countries. We own the trademark. It's all grown in Costa Rica. So they actually pick the bananas when they're green and then they ship them in these big container chips and they have it planned out that they have to be shipped so many days before they're going to ripen. Because otherwise if they all ripen in the ship then you have a big ship of banana chutneys. So I don't know what happened. There was some problem getting through the Panama Canal or something and the ship didn't reach in tight. So they figured out if you send a banana they're going to reach to Denmark and they're all going to do overripe and can't send them. So they had something like, I don't know, 50,000 tons. So incredible how much is a whole ship hold 20,000 tons or something. A banana is in the. They just put in the paper that it's over the date, you can't send them. So religious organizations and charitable organs they can take as many bananas as they want. Real charge, just take them away. So then they sold them in the market and the banana price will collapse. So then they picked up like 30 tons of bananas. When I arrived in the temple they had boxes like as big as this whole room. That many bananas, maybe more even in front of the temple. But they were hard. I mean they were still hard. I don't know, maybe they wouldn't reach Europe or something. But they were not. You know, you had to wait like two weeks just before we could be.
There.
And you know, and do cars. They all ripen and then again we boiled eight bananas. So many different fruits of bananas. Here you go, 30 tablets devotees in the temple and 30 times. So they're getting banana, you know, preparation food for life. But anyway, how you get a green banana and then it ripens. So Prabhupada said, we're like that. We start out the devotees are pure devotees, but some are Green pure devotees. They're like not fully ripe. But in due course they're going to write that if we take this Dana, Krishna servant, try to serve Krishna serve. Or in due course the volume is right. Then you go from the Kinishtadhikari, the Madhi Malikari to the Uttamadhikari. So here describing the Uttamadhikari, someone who is completely fix also philosophy. The same qualities are there, maybe not so profoundly, but they're also there even in any devotee who's fixed themselves up that they want to serve Ka as a goal in their life. So I see that so many devotees are engaged in devotional service with determination and reminded intelligence. Is next time Krishna using their intelligence. How can I serve Krishna? How can I improve things? How can I make a better restaurant, a better beauty worship, a better temple, a better form of gathering people together and exchanging ideas. So that's using their intelligence for Ka. We're going through all of our life for changes and keeping our mind on Krishna. We learn to surrender to Ka no matter what. We just serve Krishna. Some of our being a spiritual father that I have, I see on my. I haven't gone through myself at Vihasta Ashram, but I have many disciples who go so from a distance, a little bit distance, I see. And some of them commented when they had a new baby. So I never knew what surrender meant until I had a baby. I don't know, maybe you can do this anything. So because it said that maybe if someone says, come on, it's time to do something, well, okay, I'll just be there. Anything you can put on, right? But if the baby's really cry, really like you can't put it off, you can't put it. You have to just go and take care whether it's good night or so. That way you learn to surrender. You learn to do that, you know, take someone else's interest above your own interest. So in mature life, we're forced to do that sometimes. But why do we do it? Because they do, because of love. They love their child. So they neglectful parents around their children. So the same way, if we love Ka, we do things because it's needed for Krishna's service, then the devotee doesn't hesitate to do what's needed. Krishna sees that someone they're determined, they go on with their service. Helps devotees become very good. Here. Everything we do in material, we can also do almost everything we take care of building a family, taking care of our children. They can through that they want to, they love their children they want to see their children give back to Godhead so they want to give the best thing for their children and all their Krishna conscious as well Breath, hope for their children. So they give their children ka consciousness and this is just one breath. This is the beginning of a whole series of verses where Krishna tells the good qualities of devotees, qualities that attract him. One who is equal to friends and enemies who is equal place in honor and dishonor. Sometimes you get princed if you get affected by that, everybody gets a set up, right? You feel good because someone craves you. Next time someone says hey, you're a nonsense and you feel bad. The goal is learn to if you get prayed, you think if I do everything good, it's the mother say Lord Krishna, I don't have any and then somebody criticized think well I just deserve it, I just owe me bad things, I'll try to learn whatever I can from it. So then you don't get affected. Some people may say they're atheists, they say, well you people are just crazy. No matter what happens, you think that it's all good with come on, what if there's no God then? Prabhupada used the reverse psychology to look at if there's no God then what does it mean anyway? We're just a bunch of chemicals. And then this chemical combination, dice or whatever you want to call it, it always cease to exist. And what does it mean anyway? Nothing has any meaning anyway. So what have we lost anyway? These people are frustrated because they're looking, they're anxious and hankering and they're frustrated so they're not happy anyway, even though they have all this, you know, the material concept, the devotee, even if it's a false hope, you just take it just for discussion's sake at the end of life I'm going to go back to Godhead. Even if that was a false, at least the devotees like you saw, you're living in a fool's paradise. But take it the other way. If we're right, if Krishna is there and like all the great realized souls have confirmed and come back even like rather than we came back from spiritual.
World.
And if we're right, then you know we're smart. Not that many don't, but just for discussion's sake, just to show even logically that it's not a losing population.
Then.
We win and there, you know, they're going to be Yamaduta father, you're going to see the worst part of this moment to our existence. So the word is that that doesn't mean that we feel can do better than anybody else. We feel that we're fortunate to have this opportunity. We like to see this opportunity given to everybody. We don't want to force anybody. We like to give them the opportunity. I can somehow see that they get the mercy. That's the mood of devotees. This 12th chapter talks about the difference between impersonalism and personalism. How the personal future of the Lord is more direct and more powerful. How the impressible feature of the water was difficult to attempt, but one can achieve it. But it's very difficult and a lot of suffering goes in the path. Then Krishna explains how by fixing your mind on him, on deviatingly, then you can. That's the perfection. But if you're not able to do that, then if you practice devotional service by regulative principles, make a Dharga routine, chant Hare Krishna so many times in the day, get up in the morning, get flowers or get some flowers for the ladies, make garlands, cooking, go different devotional services, regulated standard. Then this way, eventually you'll get all of Ka back to Krishna. So if you can't do that, then do as much of that as you can and work for Ka. Working for Krishna, you also come to that vibrational. Looks like in this temple you're going to have a lot of fish at work. They're going to make their back building into a temple doing a lot of work, if not directly, at least indirectly. They donate, but they sing it out and they give a nice facility, nice temple room. So this way different ways you work for Krishna. If someone can't work for Krishna, at least they can do charity and help other people do charitable works. Do something directly for Krishna that has a much higher mercy level than if you just do some material charity. But even if you don't, it's better that some charity will work than nothing and better if you do it directly for Ka. Then describes different levels of different puts back our knowledge and austerities and different things. Then now the last verses, the good qualities we share. The whole chapter is only 20 verses. But this chapter is considered one of the most powerful chapters in the Bhagavad Buddha. In the Padma Purana is described as someone just repeats the verses from this chapter every day. That amazing kind of results from that. If I heard advice about the 12th chapter Bhagavad Gita, Lord Shiva was discussing with Parvati chapter by chapter, that every verse of the Bhagavad Gita has different glories. So when he got to the 12th chapter, then he wanted to hear what's the glories of the 12th chapter. So then he explained that once there was one king who was trying to do Astroveda Yajna, but his horse was stolen and then suddenly he died. So then he couldn't finish the Astramad Yajna, a special, very complicated fire sack, so which involves a horse being rejuvenated and bringing that horse back to life. So then the prince, the crown prince, he put his father's body in there. Thank you for watching our videos. Be sure to subscribe to our channel. We publish new videos every day.
