20030715 || Śrīmad Bhāgavatam Class (4.24.16) #JayapatakaSwamiArchives

Recorded lecture/chanting by Jaya Pataka Swami focused on Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam (Fourth Canto, 24th Chapter, verse 16) delivered as a classroom-style talk. The speaker narrates background stories (Sūta Gosvāmi, Maitreya Rishi, Vidura, Uddhava, Markandeya/Markunda, Surabhi cow, Vyasa and Vidura’s birth), explains devotional themes (devotee–Lord dialogues, importance of hearing Bhāgavatam), and intermixes translations, anecdotes, and personal reminiscences about devotees and preaching work. The tone is devotional, expository, and anecdotal.
The Dūrā asked Maitreya, My dear Rāmānanda, please tell me how the meeting happened, how Lord Śrīla became very pleased with them, and how He instructed them. Certainly such talks are important, and I wish that you please give mercy to those or between exalted devotees, one should be very much curious to hear them. At the meeting of Naimisharanya, where Suta Gosvami spoke Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam, for the sages believed that the talks between Sukadeva Goswami and Maharaja Pariksit must have been as important as the talks between Lord Krishna and Arjuna, as everyone is still eager to learn the subject of Bhagavad-gita in order to become perfectly enlightened. Vidura was similarly eager to learn from the great saints like Duryodhana, about the talks between Lord Śiva and the Pacintas. Thus ended by Prakṛtānta's Swami translation of the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam, Fourth Canto, Twenty-fourth Chapter, Sixteenth Verse, in the manner of chanting the song, Sun, by Lord Śiva. Adiyo. That's it. Indira had approached somebody and asked him to be his guru, but instead he had He's back in there, the only one that attends class. Everyone attends class? No one attends class? It's just a few verses ahead, probably, or a few chapters. He read a few chapters. Uddhava. He went to see Uddhava. Uddhava found that he was much younger than Vidura. He was overwhelmed with separation in the world. Who is Suta Goswami? I don't know.
Suta Goswami is the reciter of Srimad Bhagavatam. They got together at Naimisharanya and he spoke to Bhagavatam, to the rishis and sages.
How did he get there? His first canto is this. Suta Goswami was made the spiritual master of his people by whom? So much general information there. Because he didn't know how long he was going to live, so he tried to put everything in the first character. And if you read the first character, you get a whole new view of the Mahabharata, you get a whole new view of the Indian Quranic history. He recognized that somebody from there, or other groups, said that you read the first character once or twice. The four lines of the cross. Jaya Govinda, Jaya Ki, Jaya Govinda, Jaya Ki, Jaya Ki. So, Suta Goswami is the son of Rama Harishananda. And Rama Harishananda was seated preparing to give this thousand year yajna, talking about Srimad Bhagavatam. Maybe somehow that culture still stuck with him. So he went and took a piece of Husa grass, and he touched it on the Harshna with the Husa grass, and he passed away. He went back to Godhead. And all of a sudden, he was freaked out. He said, Oh, what's happening? Who's going to teach us now? He said he wasn't qualified. So anyway, his son was there when they were speaking of the Srimad Bhagavatam. He was there. So he put Suta Goswami on the seat and said, now he's your teacher. After that, Suta Goswami, he started to speak. So what we're hearing is, who's the main speaker of the Bhagavatam? Let's see if we can get that one right. yudhiṣṭhira-mārā-parīkṣa-mām. And so Gosvāmī was also present. And Śrīla Gosvāmī was present. And he is also our disciple. So he was present when this discussion happened. And so he is explaining what happened between Parīkṣa and Śukadeva Gosvāmī. to the sages. And that's being acknowledged. So hearing the story of a story is more sweeter when you hear something like that because you hear it from another perspective. So now, we're hearing Suta Goswami explaining how, Sukadeva Goswami is explaining how you What evidence? Why do different traders meet Shiva? Do you know how hard it is to meet Shiva? There's people who worship Shiva for years. They're doing all meditation, tapasya. They don't see Shiva. But then by this time they're asking devotees to do basic things of the Bhagavatam. And most devotees are in the wrong lane. Who is a devotee of Swami? Who is a trader? Matreya Rishi is one of the very, very important rishis. But you may not know Matreya because the descriptions of him are a lot later, in the 11th and 12th cantons. There's a lot about Matreya. You may not know so much about Matreya, but at least you know that he was present when Krishna left his body. Anybody knows how about Matreya Rishi? 9 days of Brahma. He had a special blessing. His parents were worshipping Shiva and there was a brahmana, so Makunda. Makunda Rishi. So it started as Markandeya. Makunda and Markandeya. There was a special kunda there which all the holy rivers watered and brought their mantras and they bathed. And the parents were really happy to have such a sound. They were really happy. You can imagine a greenhouse with all the oil in it. That sound was very, very glorious. Very religious, very strict. It's best to play around with the chandas and sky tree for five years of age and it's a job for them and everything. He said, why are you all so unhappy today? It's your birthday. It's my birthday and you're unhappy. They told him that we were told he only lived nine years. So we were feeling so bad that he may have to leave us now. Then he said, how is that? Then he went and somehow he just hugged the Sri Lanka, this huge Sri Lanka, this temple, Jagannath Puri. So I'm not going, I'm not letting you go. He's the one who's in the movie. And I'm taking shelter in him, I'm not going with him. And so then, न्यामराज उन्होँ आप तो दू, He's like, you could take shelter, but she don't like that. And he was a bit perplexed. And then शीवा appeared. Because of so much emotion of his child, again unless he came 9 days, 9 years he had to stay 9 days of Rama. Which is, somebody might be, you're right, somebody's got to be somewhere. So anyway, the later he became, you know, so he had this tremendously long life and he would meditate in the Himalayas and he had the personal darshan of Narayana Rishi, who is the incarnation of Krishna. It's like Arjuna and Krishna, Narayana and Narayana, they performed this mystical yoga process. So Maitreya means, you know, not many people, a lot of people run off course, And all the planets except for Drona Loka wiped out. And Drona Vaisakhi starts all over again, creating everything. So that time, when the whole universe gets destroyed, Maitreya Rishi doesn't die. Once everybody else dies, he grows into Garbhodaksha and Vishnu. But he's been bashed around in the water. He doesn't die, but there's also nothing to eat. It's not like he's Superman. His lifespan is like this. He still has to eat, he has to sleep. So he just had a lifespan in terms of his natural life. You say our natural life is somewhere between 70 and 100. It's supposed to be 100, but because of a lot of pollution and things like that, So he's been smashed around in the ocean and he's really, really, really hungry. And then he sees Hare Kṛṣṇa. He sees this island in the ocean and he's like, wow, an island. And he somehow They don't get destroyed. They still manifest. They are like an island in this ocean. And they are golden. I don't speak to you about this, but guess who lives in Bodrum? Anybody knows? Okay, and where does that come from? The Lord of all this, Surabhi Kumbha, the Surabhi cow who blessed, who bathed Kṛṣṇa with her milk, when after the Govardhanābhūlā, when Indra came to apologize and surrender to Kṛṣṇa and beg forgiveness for his rashness and floating up and down, At that time the elephant of Indra sprayed Indra with Yamuna water and the Surabhi cow sprayed Krishna with milk in an oven. That Surabhi cow was visiting her God when she lives in Mayapur, in the island of Godavari. And the place where she lives is called Surabhi Bhuta. So Matarishi ended up in Godavari and he saw Surabhi and he prayed, Please save me because I'm so weak. There's no food anywhere. If you just give me something to eat, I'll be alive. ḍaḍaḍaḍaḍaḍaḍaḍaḍaḍaḍaḍaḍaḍaḍaḍaḍaḍaḍaḍaḍaḍaḍaḍaḍaḍaḍaḍaḍaḍaḍaḍaḍaḍaḍaḍaḍaḍaḍaḍaḍaḍaḍaḍaḍaḍaḍaḍaḍaḍaḍaḍaḍaḍaḍaḍa Hắn ḍḍḍḍḍḍḍḍḍḍḍḍḍḍḍḍḍḍḍḍḍḍḍḍḍḍḍḍḍḍḍḍḍḍḍḍḍḍḍḍḍḍḍḍḍḍḍḍḍḍḍḍḍḍḍḍḍḍḍḍḍḍḍḍḍḍḍḍḍḍḍḍḍ.
Ḍaḍaḍaḍaḍaḍaḍaḍaḍaḍaḍaḍaḍaḍaḍaḍaḍaḍaḍaḍaḍaḍaḍaḍaḍaḍaḍaḍaḍaḍaḍaḍaḍaḍaḍaḍaḍaḍaḍaḍaḍaḍaḍaḍaḍaḍaḍaḍaḍaḍaḍaḍaḍaḍaḍaḍa.
And then arrested him and said, you're harboring a criminal, and for that we're giving you the death penalty. And then he said, this is weird, because I don't know who this guy is, and he said, I don't know, you can come to my class, you know, I don't know who you are. So then he was tied to the stake, and the soldiers were lined up with their spears, He said, at this rate of fire, suddenly a messenger comes from the king. Hold it! The king has ordered, don't kill this rishi. The rishi said, wow. Talking about tension. So he was really upset and he approached Yamaraja. He was so powerful, he approached Yamaraja. Why did you do this to me? Because you're the one who's governing the karma. Why did you do this? He said, well, when you were five years old, four or five, just like this, a little before five, you're taking a straw and you're poking an insect. And that insect was really afraid. It's a gigantic straw, a little insect, you know. The straw appears like, you know, somebody taking a big stick and poking at it. So because you caused so much tension to that insect when you were five years old, therefore, you have to also undergo that same tension now. He said, that is the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard. I was a kid. What did I know I was five years old? And then he said, whatever it is, you're responsible for whatever you're doing. Well, that doesn't make any sense. I mean, what does a little child know to figure out He did two things. One, he said, I think this is total mismanagement. I curse you to become a son of Surya. And then the other thing, that's like, whatever, making some kind of blessing, curse, whatever you want to call it. Anything a child does up to the age of five, the parents are responsible for all the problems. Thanks to this rishi. Any parents here? You got to watch out your kids don't poke insects and do weird things and torture little kittens and stuff. Thanks to this rishi, he said, you know, you want to change the rules. So that's the new rules. And so because of that, He didn't know at what time he had to become Sarvabhauma Sutra. So that's when he chose this time, when Krishna's pastime to become a human being, when Krishna's on the planet. And so he became the son of Vyasadeva through the Sudrani. And then Vyapra-yuga, it was allowed when a mother couldn't bear, when a father couldn't have children. And the wife of the brother could conceive. Because in that time, people were not so lusty like now. But they could do it without remaining having some attachment for the brother's wife after that. Kali Yuga, that's one of the five things which is forbidden because people are not so detached anymore. And so that's how Padu, That's how they do it, because the first queen, when Vyasadeva was in such a serious stage, it was just like a very official thing that was going on, she was so freaked out. It wasn't like a romantic kind of event for her. She closed her eyes, and because she closed her eyes, Secondly, the wife couldn't take it, so she pushed four of the servants into it. So that the servant, she conceived and that was Vidura. So he was considered as the half-brother of Vidurastha because the mother was not the queen. So he then also had the right to become heir to the throne. He was very wise and very devoted. He was actually the incarnation of Yamarāja. And the third was Pāṇḍu. At that point she was like completely, she kept her eyes open, but then she was completely freaked out, so she was like, like white. I don't know, I don't even know if you can like, pale because of the, just the whole thing was a bit, I don't know, so she became very pale. So that's why her son became very white. That's padu, means white or yellow. So that's the background there. This is in Mahabharata. It was written in the first canto. So Vidura, He was a very major player in the Mahabharata. So now he's come. He wants to hear. She's very eager to hear about Krishna Conscious topics. She wants to hear what she was saying to the Prachetas. But it's very good that she's here. I won't be here for her. I don't know if I'll be here for them. Tvāṣīva, He reveals that I have given, I come here to the Yuga Cetanas because you are Kṛṣṇa devotees and I love Kṛṣṇa devotees. I love Kṛṣṇa devotees more than my own devotees. Because His devotees are going to be always asking, give me a mystic power, give me this, give me that. It's not like I'm coming to Him out of pure liking, And because they know that Shiva is the greatest devotee, Vaishnava, Arunachala, Sambhu, he is the greatest devotee of Krishna, of Vishnu. So therefore they also love Krishna, they love Shiva. They respect him so much. So you find that somehow in South India you have this big fighting between the Shivaites and Vaishnavas. But in our tradition, the way we are taught, He is an Acharya, he is a former relation of Sankara Daya. He is worshipped by people like the Bahá'u'lláh, the Vedas. As far as we are concerned, for us it is more important that he is a great Vaishnava and we worship him as a Vaishnava. In Bhuvaneshwar, they have a famous Sacramento temple called the Bhakta Vasudeva. Do you know this temple? There are very interesting deities. And somehow, Dimalaya gets all the prasad from Jagannath in Puri. I don't know if Srila gets any. I've never heard about it. But he gets all the prasad from Vrindavan Sarvepa, Bhuvaneshwara. Not all, but he gets the prasad often. So there's a very major temple. Bhuvaneshwar is the name of that season. Siddhartha is named after him. And he is also known as Lingaraj, the king of lingas, king of chidolingas. And so because he would take Vajrayana, Prasadam, he also takes Vashina, Prasadam. There is a Vashina Devi in his temple. And then Prasadam was but it was Vishnu Prasad. And so there's a whole tradition there in that temple. I heard some rumors that, no, they may not follow so strictly, but the time of Vatsi Tantra was very strict, and Vishnu Prasad was offered to Vatsila. So, Vatsila means that I make to Lord Kṛṣṇa. And I want to share with you my Kṛṣṇa prayer. That's why I'm just chanting the song sung by Lord Śiva. It's his song to Lord Kṛṣṇa. And he glorifies Kṛṣṇa and glorifies the holy names. It's very important for Tamil preaching because many Tamils are very much attached to Śiva and they don't understand The relationship between Śrīla and Viṣṇu and Kṛṣṇa. So if they read, in fact, probably this chapter should be translated in Tamil. So it's already, the fourth chapter is in Tamil now. But that could be printed separately or something just for you to do, especially the Śrīla kind of speakers. The prayer of Lord Śrīla. He also prayed, what does he pray to Him? So you are paying your right side to the Devas and your left side to Krishna. That's the normal procedure when you are going to temples. So you go to the Deva temple, you bow down as a Vaishnava with your right side. You go to the Vishnu temple, you bow down with your left side. It's important to ask questions. It's important for the ear to learn. Maybe he even knew something. It's not that everything that the Duryodhana asked he didn't know anything. He's Yamaraja. He knows a lot of things. But here's a chance to hear from Maitreya Rishi. He's been around a long time. About this topic. It's what we call churning the ocean of nectar. You want to hear the nectar. Just like last night, when you listened to Bhagavad Gita, you said, I'd like to hear how you're treating about the universal form from the Gita. You say, tell me how one should tend to manifest this universal form to a greater churning. He knew about it. He just wanted to hear it again. So that eagerness to hear some actor, the door is filled with that. It's a very good sign because it's very important. One should be very much curious to hear the topics between a devotee and the Lord, between exalted devotees. Thousands of the sages in Vaishnavism, they wanted to hear. Why did the preacher of Sukhavati have to speak? What was the problem? They knew that the presently emperor of the world is going to die and he wants to hear a topic which is going to liberate him in seven days. Okay, this is really important stuff. If you know that, you have the key, how to get back to Ganesha. And on that occasion, they flew in devotees from around the world who were there in the beginning days of Bombay. Kaisalya Maharaj, she was there, my dear grand-sister, and Shaila Sundaram. And one of Giriraj Maharaj's company was Sreedhar Maharaj, he was at N.C. They had a lot of devotees. We flew in about twelve devotees from around the world. who shared their experiences and pastimes. One of the glories was Haridas. Haridas is a usual character in the pastimes of Prabhupāda there. Now he is a movie producer. He has a famous show in India. He has produced a lot of different devotional programs. He used to have an English station too. I spoke in that one. I know Hindi, but not so well for international programs. So he just stood up and he said, I want to just tell you, And I was like, although it was that people wouldn't admit, you know, I said, I was a pickpocket. And I was in, I was the rest of my life, was like, all these people are talking about the austerity. So living in Bombay in the old days, we're going to have all of this grass, huts and everything. But for me, it was like paradise. Because I was living in the street. And I used to get arrested just to get some nice meals in jail and have a nice, you know, დადადადადადადადადადადადადადადადადადადადადადადადადადადადადადადადადადადადადადადადადადადადად So when he got out of jail, then he looked up, where is his body? He came to the temple, so where is the body of the Dr. Swami? So he's not here, he's somewhere else preaching. So a few hours from the temple, then he went. But the first day he took some prasada, he went to devotees. Then he went and went to see Prabhupada. He turned and sees him and went. He said, why did you come for? I said, I'm not going to admit to you that I came to steal your watch. But I don't know, these people are so nice, I think I'd like to learn from you and I'd like to practice this process. I'm just telling you why. See, it was so honest to Prabhupāda, Prabhupāda, that I had a pickpocket, and when I went up there in the morning, and how Prabhupāda then engaged him. Everybody was crying and laughing, it was so amazing, because on one hand, how merciful Prabhupāda was, Pabongkha was so merciful to him and so there was one day an initiation ceremony going on in Bombay. And he said, I was sitting in the kitchen, you know, I was, I just asked the temple commander, could I just take a look, what does the initiations look like? I mean, I've been here a year and I've never seen one before, and so then he said, okay, you come back quickly, I'll finish the cleaning. So he went to the temple room to see the initiations and Pabongkha saw them. He said, look, you can take initiations. He was like, I don't know. And the cow was like, it's a pig pie. It's okay, it's okay. And he said, I don't have a problem, you don't have to change it. And then at the moment for quite some time it wasn't. But everyone thought that, you know, it should have been guaranteed, it shouldn't have been a problem. But it wasn't, it is that he didn't steal from them. Once he was in the temple, he didn't do that. He said, sometimes they gave him a quarter when he was on saṃkīrtana to do books, and he couldn't eat his quarter, so that sometimes he would pick up his own people and give out the books or something and take his quarter for the temple. Then Prabhupāda heard about that, told him not to do that. So, that was very interesting. We were hearing all these Prabhupāda disciples telling Prabhupāda. He was one of the leading characters of Amida Buddha's life. But he was revealing that how Prabhupāda was so merciful to him. And Prabhupāda, because of his unlimited mercy, he completely changed his person. He was a very, very senior devotee and really dedicated. His mother is also, lives in Myna Puri. She was Prabhupāda's cook. Mọiṇṭṭṭṭṭṭṭṭṭṭṭṭṭṭṭṭṭṭṭṭṭṭṭṭṭṭṭṭṭṭṭṭṭṭṭṭṭṭṭṭṭṭṭṭṭṭṭṭṭṭṭṭṭṭṭṭṭṭṭṭṭṭṭṭṭṭṭṭṭṭṭṭ I don't know if anybody was from Switzerland in those days, for many days. I know there was this Adi Shekhar Prabhu from France, nearby, but he was with us in the grass hut. But, yeah, I invited Baba. Prabhupāda Ṭhākura Ṭhākura Ṭhākura Ṭhākura Ṭhākura Ṭhākura He invited him to Ṭhākura Ṭhākura come and he said, let's try to come to Myanthorpe and he'd rather share what happened when he came in as a Peace Corps worker for the American Peace Corps. He used to do volunteer social work. And he came to that town, but in Myanthorpe, his village, and how Prabhupāda dealt with him, how Prabhupāda talked with him. He got his first seat. Also, from his point of view, what he was going through, Thank you for watching our videos.
