A recorded lecture (transcript) by Jaya Pataka Swami explaining the story of Bali Maharaja and using it to illustrate the traditional qualities of a Brahmana and a Vaishnava. The speaker enumerates classical brahminical virtues (peacefulness, self-control, austerity, purity, tolerance, honesty, knowledge, wisdom, faith/religiosity), contrasts material desires with spiritualized desires, and emphasizes initiation, practical guru instruction, and steady devotional practice as the path to spiritual advancement. The talk mixes scriptural citation (Bhagavad-gita/Śrīmad Bhāgavatam), mythological description of nonhuman planetary denizens, practical anecdotes, and pastoral guidance for devotees.
Sarina God. At that time the residents of the Higher planetary System, men of the Demigods, the Gandharvas, the Vidyadharas, the Siddhas and the Charnas, all being very pleased by Boli Maharaja's simple, non duplicious act, praised his qualities and showered upon him millions of flowers purport Arjun. Simplicity or freedom from duplicity is a qualification of a Brahmana and a Vaishnava. A Vaishnava automatically acquires all the qualities of a Brahmana. Yashasti, Bhakti, Bhagavatakinshana, Vayavar Pune, SATA sama, Sade Sura, Avaishnava should possess the Brahminical qualities such as Satya sama, Dharma, Chitiksha and archivists. There cannot be any complicity in the character of a Vaishnava. When Bali Maharaj acted with unflinching faith and devotion unto the Lotus leader of Vishnu, this was very much appreciated by all the residents of the Higher planetary System. The Gondarbas, the Kim Purushas and the Kinnaras sold thousands and thousands of cattle that drum and trumpets again and again. And they sang in great jubilation declaring how exalted a person is Bali Maharaj and what a difficult task he has performed. Even though he knew that Lord Krishna was at the side of his enemies, he nonetheless gave the Lord the entire three worlds in charity. This is a Bhagavad Gita. Does any of the qualities of a Brahmana, 18th chapter, appropriate verse today? Because today some devotees are taking sacrificiation. The Brahmanas, the Vaishnava, they by nature have so many good qualities. The Brahmana has sometimes they say nine qualities and sometimes they say 12. 12 deep. They supposed to have one more one time. Shilbaki Siddham Kasaram Suli Thakur. He was invited to come to a lecture program. So he went there and for a couple hours he was world fine Brahmanas and all their qualities. Here the Bhagavad Gita explains in text 42, chapter 18 Samodhamastha, Paso Cham, Chantiyarcha, Vami Vacha, Gyanam, Vigana, Mastikyam, Brahma, Karma, Suva, peacefulness, self control, austerity, purity, tolerance, honesty, knowledge, wisdom and religiousness. These are the natural qualities by which the Brahman was worked. So he was explaining each of the qualities, how these are the qualities of the Brahman. They are feeling very good. He really understood. Then at the end he says all these qualities automatically possessed by Dalai and they have one more, which is pure devotion. To be religious is one thing. Bhakta may be also with mature desires. But to be pure devotion actually work for the pressure of the board. That's a higher level. So sama peacefulness, Sama also means to be eco. We become peaceful when we're equally poised in different situations. Things are always conflicting in the material world. Have any of you ever faced any conflicts? So to survive those conflicts, if we are able to be equal, not having friends and enemies, not seeing every reverse, every conflict. In a more spiritual perspective, you can become peaceful, see things more philosophically. Even if something happens against us. But it's also some kind of a reaction to things we did in the past. Somehow it's meant for testing our purity, our determination to serve. So many different ways. We can see it like the Mother Earth was being beaten by a Kali. But she didn't. She was seeing it all very philosophically. So she couldn't become disturbed. Of course, Pariksha, he didn't see things the same way. He was protecting the cow during his time. Later, when he realized how this cow was not the scenery for the savages. That was not ordinary cow. The people who see things philosophically, they're special. So Brahmins are very special people. Being a Brahmana means not to be ordinary but to do other things for a higher purpose. But because of that it can be more peaceful. But ultimately, even a Ramana without being appeared to baby is not fully peaceful. Just like Lord Taylor said. Mufti Mukti city. Mukti means liberation. Bhukti means sense gratification. And Siddhi means mystic powers. The people who desire these three things, Swatgali, Ashanti, they're all three of them unbeaceful. They all want to achieve something. Either their material desire is being fulfilled. Whether they get liberation or that they get some mystic power. Because of that, they're not peaceful people. Because unless they get what they want, they're still not peaceful. When they get what they want, there's not really going to be that which satisfies them. So they're still not going to be peaceful. Therefore, that appears to be a desire. But that desire is completely spiritual. It's in harmony with Krishna. Therefore it's considered no material desire. Desiring something spiritual is the easy way not to dissolving it really not to desire material things. We spiritualize our desire by desiring to please Ka. Therefore, because the pure devotee of Ka doesn't have material desires, therefore it is peaceful. The devotees have so many desires. It doesn't mean they don't have desire, but they spiritualize all their desires. To the extent that we can achieve that, to our extent, we'll be peaceful. Brahma self control. Brahmadas had to do self control. And Bhakti Yoga, Vishnu's in our heart. He sees what we're doing with everybody else. It's not always there to see. So we have to be under all of that self control. Sadakov some kind of a prison and we're locked up. To some extent we can say that living in ashram you have all kinds of people that are there to help you, remind you. And that's in one sense I always appreciate Vaji Hastas who are living in their homes and they're very self controlled because there's nobody overseeing them on a day to day basis. Still their self control. In fact some people when they move from the ashram and they go out and start an independent household, then they find that oh now all those tort systems that over there at the temple ashram and Maya makes big attack. So they have to really become more mature. In fact, Gopal Bhaktada Swami describes the Hasta Ashram as responsible ashram, lots of responsibilities. One has to be responsible for their sexual activities, for the family development for so many, for society, for the temple. So there's Rama means control in this sense, self control. Whereas Tapa austerity taking voluntary inconveniences for the sake of Krishna. Sometimes you have to fast, sometimes you have to feast. I don't think too much, I don't think too little. So that's starting to top up. See some of I would have said I realized I was just in pair Russia where It was already minus three. That's going to be minus 25. But now it's just very cold in the 10 minus. And there was this maybe she's 55, 60 years old lady. And she couldn't carry a big book bag anymore. So she had a little roller tire, filled it up with about 30, 40 kilos of books. And she seemed to go on some kirtan next day go out in the minus and freezing weather with her roller cart pulling your books and distributing all of those books. And that's the brasya also. The Brasya is born in the sun. Born in the cold especially it's a very harsh environment still there just to be Prabhupada described austerity. Sometimes it's like in the hot weather and in Diello the ladies are cooking and in the cold weather people Are still taking their showers in bath even there's not like warm water. We saw these Rajasthani marble cutters in Mayampur of the 1970s. Every morning they'd be there in the winter taking their cold showers. So there's all different types of things called under austerity. And that austerity that makes produces sochant which is purity. Not willing to take some austerity superiority pure physically, mentally and our purpose. So another quality of the Brahmana, the pure. The Brahmana collects the donations and they use their own for Krishna. So Brahmanas are allowed to to collect actually. Then they're careful how they use to keep their purity. Tolerance shantir. So many intolerable things that happen in the third world. Somehow Brahmanas had to be tolerance. Honesty. That's the word that was used today. Guru of Bali Maharaj advised him so called Guru that he could lie. He could say sorry, I kind of promise more than what I can really give. Gave all kinds of mundane logic and why it was okay to tell a lie. But he said no, this is Vishnu. I'm going to follow through with what I promised. Even he got cursed by his Guru. He still went ahead. So that honesty you can see it's glorifiable in the three world. Everybody appreciated. Bali Maharaj was a very honest. I want to speak of honest. He gave this one thing that maybe promised like a 10 marks or something, you know. But he promised two steps of land. But he is going to lose everything. He had an empire of the entire world. Not only the world, three worlds. Solving millions of planets, galaxies, some of his domain. And in giving it all this is Keith, his word. The nut of small things. This is a very high character. I'm sure his fellow demons are. Oh, he is Nazis. Even his Guru is going to speak of the other ones. But that's why Bhavimaraj is a Mahatra. I don't know if you can see much. Anyway, he's one of the representing the vain practice of devotional service. He's atma limited. He had gotten the three worlds by stealing them at war. But in the end Vishnu promises and I'll give it to you. You become Indra. For in the future Mahuata Manha the next one or the one after that. The Bali becomes the bona fide Indra with all the trappings and all the protection of Ishtar. It's going to be an interesting rule. I'd be happy to go back to God here before then, if that's Christian. So by the way, he didn't lose anything. You be honest, give and charity don't lose. Whatever he gave away, he's going to give back in a much better way. And in the meantime he's got a very peaceful kingdom in Suttava, which is a very opulent Vishnu's personal presence protect. But this kind of integrity, personal integrity is rare. Somebody has it. It's a brahminical quality. It's a demon of goodness. Sometimes devotees that don't live to these brahminical qualities. And it's very discouraging for new people. There are other devoted devotee and they didn't faulty, they were honest, they were reliable. They left their vowels and left their promises. It was very traumatic. But in this material world, so many people, it's very rare to sign. That's why abradical qualities are very exalted. Then there's Gana knowledge, having the knowledge of the scriptures. The knowledge of what the universe is. Self realization, knowledge, transcendental knowledge, self again knowledge. And then how to apply that knowledge. Let's be Ganu wisdom. Someone may have a knowledge, they don't know how to apply it. Use. That's what one learns by seeing the lives of great devotees from the guru how to apply the different instructions. Sometimes the scriptures give instructions which appear contradictory. Like stool of an animal is dirty. Using cow dung, which is a stool of an animal to do puja for the Devis Ayurvedic medicine in Calgary. It's medicinal, but otherwise. Normally any kind of animal you're in would also be contaminated. So then the guru explains that this is trevi ruled. There's some exception because the cow has four stomachs and stomach therefore inflate urine and dung is also considered pure antiseptic. My caviar told me I have to take hundred grams of calorie a day to four months in my very healthy. So that's the wisdom we get from my guru Sadhu Shastavi Kabad. Especially the guru, the Lodis, they give us so much wisdom. How to apply them. Difficult to learn just from the books. Without any practical example. There's not so many details they do with art. You look in a book, do artis with them and offer a lamp. Someone who's never seen anybody do an art tea. Who knows how they would offer the lair. But it's speculating that will say like okay, alpha, clockwise, little loops and things. In two minutes the guru can show you that this is how you're doing art. So there's so many things like that. We need to lurk. When you put the how to apply the knowledge, that's vighyam or wisdom. Sometimes the gyan is used like in India. In modern Indian languages they use vigana as science. So it's almost like the scientific application of the nouns, theoretical nouns and acceptable astikim religiousness. Like in the Bengali language. The word for atheist is nastic, not astik. Irreligious, no belief in God. So astikyam is. Astik means to believe. It is to believe in God. Astikyam, that quality of being religious or having belief in God. That means that Brahmanas are not atheists. I met this one priest that was an atheist. Sir, I'm a priest because I do social work, has good pay, has low hours, not too well. I don't believe in God. I was shocked. Of course most priests I don't think are like that. Once in South America there was a priest, he was sitting in the darshan and then after he said I like to have a talk with you. From guru to guru. Everybody leave the room. And then he was a Protestant and he said that he was married. He didn't know how to. He heard. He mentioned something about more spiritualized family life and he wanted to know more about it. So I explained to him the idea of regulated family life. He was very appreciative at that time. He said I never really knew you do. They're supposed to do that. Everybody else back in. Then after about six months, I came to the place again. Again he wanted a guru. Guru talk, white collar, that's everybody lent. Then he reached behind his white collar, pulled out tulsi mekhi. We have Jews for Jesus. Maybe in the future we'll have Christians for Krishna. So to be a believer, that's quality of Brahman Samadhi. Maharaj told me once it's a morning and Christian came up here. Do you believe now I need to work back. You believe? I believe. Do you believe? My back and forth. Okay, I believe. I believe the devotees, they put their beliefs to practice every day. It's part of our so many things we do so many. Everything is based on our faith, our belief in Krishna, Shraddha. So that's also quality. Bodhi Maharaj showing so much bulimas. Guru said, this is Vishnu, this is Vishnu. He's begging for me. And I made a promise to him. Why should I take back my word whatever the consequences? So that's also reminds these fears. And he had faith that if I do the right thing, I did the right thing. So these are the qualities by which Brahmanas work. The work order is a human being. That's thanks to our parents. That's our biological birth, our first birth. But human being in this universe is nothing very special. Like you were reading here in these verses about a lot of entities. Right now they're sending the Mars probe to find out if there's any fungus frozen there, see if there's some other fun form of life anywhere else in the universe, spending billions of dollars if San Juan Voyager, which will go to the next star system, will reach there in 10,000 years to find out whether there's life there. So you can wait till whether the radio will still work. By the time they get there, we'll miss the. We'll miss the whole Sankirta movement. Or they're talking about setting up all kinds of outer space telescopes in tandem so you get a bigger image. We keep finding out recently they follow up into. That the universe is expanding, that it's much younger than I thought. Okay, of course, it's highly speculative, but here in the Bhagavatam, in the Bhagavad Gita, we have. It's not even a question. We have so many descriptions about life and the facts. This whole thing going on between Bali and Yukura is all extraterrestrial. And all these personalities are talking about Kim Purushas, Kinaras, Chabaras, Siddhas, who are showering Bali Maharaj with flowers. They are denizens of other planets. But not all those entities are even visible to human beings. They're very much more powerful. It says that if you compare one of the most powerful human beings, that there are other entities in the universe given about 1. As you compare the Australian dollar in 1970 with the dollar today, buying power, so on and so forth. So this is like for comparison, even being Olympic champion, weightlifter or big king or something. Chantry number one. He's number one. Then you go on the universe. You get the Gandaras 10 times more than you even grow. And they go up like that. And I forget to go. Nowadays, everyone you go, Kinnaras Chandraya, everyone goes up 10 more than the previous. You go up about four or five levels. Then you get up to the asuras. These asuras are the descendants of the Shapamuni Daityas, who are superhumanly powerful. They're many times more powerful even though the demonian by their tradition. But they're very powerful because they perform all kinds of austerities, penances, get all kinds of mystic powers. But then 10 times more than them or the other are the Devas. Usually the devas are more powerful than the Asuras because they're more controlled religious. Indra is undertaken more than the other Devas because he's the king of the Devas. He's got more special power then thousand times more than Indra is Brahman creating the whole universe, eternal secondary creation. Rishis explaining this because he says. But what to speak says the Brahmanas. Even I respect the Brahmanas. Even I respect the Brahmanas. I mean, we've seen like Brahma got cursed to be Indra got cursed to be a pig. The Brahmanas were so powerful, whatever they said it would happen. Because they lived by all these qualities. They got tremendous hopes. Four Kumaras were offended by the Jai Vijaya Bhajna. Prestige came to apologize. So although we are born as a human being into the universal situation, it's very significant. But why humans especially? Because they can become Brahman. We become a Brahman from being a white child as a shortcut to being Brahman. But it is by living by these principles which is easy for devotees. Because if you do everything for Krishna on the right, then you achieve all these principles. That's why somebody chant 16 rounds. Follow the four principles. Dash devotional service for more than one year after being at first the machine. And for more than a year in many belongings. They take a few years before they decide to get properly initiation. Then it's considered that they have its qualities. They can take the second machines. But then I put Swaga on a Karma Kleen on a fast track. You got to be a good driver. If you're driving freeway, everything's going faster. Means you got to know the traffic rules. You have to be able to play by them very careful. So it's just also the Karma. Everything they do, the Karma is consistent, heavier, like we say when we do the Tulsi Puja. Every step which you free from even a serious sin like a Brahmahatra. Killing a Brahmana is much heavier than killing an ordinary person. And also I read in one astrological book the Brahmarakshasm. So I guess heavy demon, cannibal man eating Rakshas. They become that because they were Brahmanas who committed suicide. If you disorder in person commit suicide, this become a boat. But if you're a Brahman and you commit suicide, you become a Brahmarakshas. There's not just a status symbol that we have a thread. It's responsibility. It's an opportunity to advance quickly to be closer to this bridge of Master Brahma Lee. Once again I remember sitting in a lecture gave an example saying Brahman. It doesn't mean it's dialogue, it's a new birth. But you're considering already at least a child like a youth and you get first initiation and it's like a little baby. Okay. Little baby, you know, passes in the diapers or something. All right. You know, it's like grabs her. They grow on that. You have to clean up the mess sometimes. But if second machine is like. At least you're like a 9 year old, 12 year old. So that's your 9 year old white mess is in your laugh. You have a problem nine months baby, nine years. So you can't like plead ignorance after taking second initiatives. Why do you come in? You're supposed to some people that take their time for psychiatrist. You don't actually have to have second initiation to get back to God. I would probably say that it's not absolutely such. If you have then you can advance quickly. Helps to control the mind and as this +1. But if the person's not careful, then it can be detrimental. There's not much to know these Islamic problem. That's why we don't just give it right away. There's some, I don't know so called modiyas that cheaper the whole process of the machines. When they see. Especially if they see somebody from this kind of. You've been channing six rounds for eight months. Okay, well you do round one. There's the only chance work. You have to deal with that in a community. As such, sometimes they come. The devotees know their gurus aren't supposed to come. We have no shame in coming and asking. I'm already have a devotee. I'm already within this manner. So that sound get attractive. All right, it's easy. Brahma gave us very orthodox effective at the same time applicable to the modern situation. What was the important thing then? He stressed that what vegetables do you want? This and that. How did unvestable dog is happening? We didn't consider that to be very important. But what the principles of austerity Brahminical principles that he considered important are performing pure devotional service today. It just happens that this verse today glorifying the Brahminical qualities and value the Vaishnava quality which even though he's a Madhavramana, he's Kshatriya. Kshatriya king of the Daityas. But being a Vaishnava he had all these bonus qualities. He had unfinishing faith and devotion to Lord Vishnu. That was his special moment. So Brahmana means. I remember one devotee once came up to see Prabhupada in my head when I was sitting in the room. Prabhu, Namati, Brahman. And then Prabhupada asked what is Bhagavan? You don't know what Brahmana? You want to be a Brahmana. You don't even know what Brahman is. You better go back and study. How can you get Brahman appreciation if you don't know what is Brahmana? So it's not there. Someone has to have some basic understanding. The absolute truth in three forms is Brahman Paralama, Bhagavad, the person of the falchions, the localized paramagna of the higher super soul and the supreme personality of Godhead. By Allah, Lord Krishna. One has to understand that we are by nature part of the absolute truth. Spiritual were my new parts of also part of the Brahmana Krishna. He said, O my love, such to the low deep diva by nature also such in animal. So basic spiritual understanding has to be there. When you do puja, you have to meditate. I met this body, I met spirit soul. I'm part of Krishna. I'm not the selling of bodies. Worshiping Krishna I that soul and worshiping Krishna through this body. We must identify ourselves very much from this. Bruce. But somebody doesn't have a clue what that spiritual reality is. It says that by taking that initiation is like some kind of a magical change, like touching the basement or a touchstone turns into gold. And through the process of diksha somebody is transformed. And then they're accepted by Ka as a spiritual. That they can start to communicate with Krishna openly gives them the path into the more direct relationship with Krishna. Because they're supposed to understand them. And those number of aberrant thoughts become fewer, farther between. Sometimes they come in clusters, especially if it's a bad spell or we're not chanting properly or not having good association. It's easy for all kinds of bryant thoughts to come in. That's why it's very important. Steady soundtrack of association. So that if we do happen to make mistakes, we have to beg for Krishna, for strength, for forgiveness and go forward and don't make the same mistake again and again. In this way, gradually we build up our strength. If his body don't rest in the spirit, lift this light weight and more and more they can eventually lift 100 kilos plus they start out with small weights. Maybe the tests for some devotees in the very beginning of their spiritual life. So many little tests are there. Later on they become so much stronger that those things are not even test at all. The newer tests come like different levels. Level 3 to 4 newer levels of Maya, newer levels of attack. More subtle problem called the ultimate test. You can be God, you can invite. Or the Sahajiyas is okay, you can be the associate of them. I go through all this. I'm not. You can imagine that your relief does assistant so and so that's the sagitt method for shortcoming things. The body was thinking that I was kind of influenced and went to Vrindavan and was watching all the Babajis to see if this is the real way. But he saw you and they're all talking really big high falas. But then when it came time to they're begging door to door for the chapatis. And then they're fighting over who got how many chapatis after fist fight. That's the least of so many other listen things going on. So the problem is Vrindavani quantum preaching is matrimony. Many of you speak prayer. They're posing the uttamakaya. They actually commission it. It's still very much on the material platform. They're just covering it with the mindfulness of labels. And they're very much on the mundane level in any respect. Better to try to be a majamanakaya. And then Krishna will lift us from there to Uttam. But if we imagine we're Uttam, actually kanista. Kanista means neophytic. Madhya means intermediate. Uttam means advanced. So in the neophyte level, the very beginner's level, then we tend to mix up materials, virtual things and madhyan babu. We see that Lord is the devotees. It is a deep part of that. We make some discrimination. We use everything for ka. We make friends with the devotees. We preach to the innocent people who avoid thee at the advanced level. And they see everybody as a the moon, silk and south. You see everything in relation to Krishna that can't be imitated. Although people try the sound is a celestial. Denizens appreciate Bali because what he was doing is not something he came into. To have that much conviction you have to be there. So they appreciated Bali was really a great personality. That's what we're talking about. Bali. After billions of years. People like their leaders to be like that. But always hits the paper. Some minister gets caught, you know, thinking. Got his bungalow fixed up by some lobbyists, they have to do something illicit and they have to renounce their ministership. Happens so often because why people expect that their ministers, the leaders, are going to be character people, but they're not. So that's why you need this kind of rabbinical training. In the Vedas, it says a learned person isn't just the person who has book knowledge, which is all that our educational system teaches people, but it's a taught character. So there was Brahminical training where people were taught side by side with the Jnana. They were given the wisdom and how to develop all these qualities. That's what's kind of missing in our educators. So we're trying to provide that in the Krishna campus. Appreciate all of your enthusiasm and participation with these words of further close here.
