Lecture by Bhavananda Swami on the householder's (grihastha) life in Krishna consciousness. He contrasts two householder types—grihastha (transcendental, spiritually-oriented family life) and bihamedhi/nihale (materially-focused, jealous, family-centered)—and stresses that human life should address ultimate miseries (birth, death, old age, disease) by hearing about the Supreme. The talk includes scriptural references (Bhagavad-gita, Bhaktivedanta purports), Vedic and Gaudiya historical anecdotes (Nityananda, Krishna Hora, examples of exemplary householders like Advaita Gosai and Bhakti Vinod Thakur), and practical ISKCON-community matters: ideal householders as preaching examples, youth programs (Pandava/Pataseva), Namhata/house programs, university and farm projects, and fundraising/gratitude for donors.
Being blind to the knowledge of ultimate truth, have many subject matters for hearing in human society. O Emperor. In the revealed scriptures there are two nomenclatures for the householder's life. One is grihasta and the other is nihale. The grihasthas are those who live together with wife and children, but live transcendentally for realizing the ultimate truth. The biharmeinis, however, are those who live only for the benefit of the family members, extended or centralized, and thus are envious of others. The word medhi indicates jealousy of others. The Bihamedis, being interested in family affairs only, are certainly envious of others. Therefore, one behamedhi is not on good terms with another gyamadhi and in the extended form, one community, society and nation is not on good terms with another counterpart. Our Selfish Interests in the age of Kali, all the householders are jealous of one another because they are blind to the knowledge of the absolute truth. They have many subject matters for hearing, political, scientific, social, economic and so on. But due to a poor fund of knowledge, they set aside the question of the ultimate miseries of life, namely miseries of birth, death, old age and disease. Factually, human life is meant for making an ultimate solution to birth, death, old age and disease. The ultimate solution to the problem of life is to go back home, back to Kandha. And thus, as stated in the Bhagavad Gita 8:16, the mysteries of maternal existence, birth, death, old age, disease are removed. The process of going back home, back to Godhead is to hear about the Supreme Lord and His name, form, attributes, pastimes, paraphernalia and variegatedness. Foolish people do not know this. They want to hear something about the name, form, etc of everything temporary. And they do not know how to utilize this propensitive hearing. Enchanting for the ultimate good. Misguided as they are, they also create some false literatures about the name, form, attributes, etc. Of the ultimate truth. One should not therefore become a green Hamedi simply to exist for ending others, one should become a real householder in terms of scriptural injunctions. Thus ends the Bhaktived Navta Swami translation. Purport to Kanto 1 chapter 1 text 2 I'll read the translation again. Repetition with repetition. Those persons who are materially engrossed, being blind to the knowledge of ultimate truth and many subject matters for hearing human society O Emperor. So here is the problem of being too busy, no time, because everybody has so many things to hear about everything but what they need to hear about you look in the Newspaper. There are so many sections. The political section, the editorials, the business, sports, life section, TV section, advertisement section. There's no spiritual section in India. They have a few newspapers that have one column. So Srila bhakti, Siddhartha saras di chakra. He wanted to do some things and he had a daily newspaper, all spiritual topics. He was so happy when the devotees would go out and distributors. People are questioning how is it you can have something daily spiritual subject matter. His response was the spiritual world is 3 4th Babuti. We have much more to discuss about than the material which is only ekipatu babuti1 4 energy. People are so busy with so many, they forget to realize who they are, forget to realize the ultimate truth. Some householders, in order to benefit their family, are going on boats and trying to migrate to other countries. And some countries who want to protect their families from having to commit compete with too many people, they don't let them enter into their country. So it's actually extended family protection. So this national divisions is another form of Binghamdi divisions. Householders gathering together for their own extended interests. It's interesting that during the Vedic time there were countries, but there were no borders. I mean, there were borders, but there was no. Anybody could travel, no passports. Marco Polo never had a passport, right? Traveled all over the world. Christopher Columbus, of course, you might end up in some hostile place, but it wasn't. It wasn't because you didn't have a passport. So now we are so advanced. Now you want to get somewhere. You have so many rituals, you have to go through passport, passports, visas, extensions, permanent residencies and whatnot, green cards, so many things. So we are now advanced. Vmad life has become very well developed. So here Prabhupada, he is promoting that we need real households. That means how important in ka consciousness our household life is that we need ideal Vhastas who are showing ideal and altruistic household life. We need to have an exemplary household so that they can show to the rest of society what is the ideal household life. Unfortunately, when you know, we have householders, but it's an area that can also be much further developed. Prabhupada actually wanted the devotees to be so exemplary that by their good qualities people would want to adopt Ka consciousness. This is an area we have not in any of our ashrams, achieved perfection in. But that's really what it's about, reaching by example. Lord Caitanya said Aponi Acharya to Dharmapura Ishita, you teach others ka consciousness by your own example. So we have nice Ka conscious grihastras. They can impress so many other people. Some of our successful congregational preachers are giving a seminar in America and they were explaining that now many grihastas are expanding their congregation by friendship. They make friends with new devotees or interested people, invite them over to the house or visit them. When the people see how nicely they are living in a Ka conscious environment, how they are rehastas with children, with their family, with jobs and everything. But they are very friendly, they seem very happy this way. When such people who they find very credible request them to please chant Hare Ka, it's very hard for them to say no. If you just somebody on the street tells you chant Hare Krishna, you may follow and may not follow. You think who are these people? But if you have make a friend with somebody and they ask you to take out Ka Consciousness then it's very hard to say you like to please your friends. That's what happens to some of our children. They go to public school. They have so many non devotee friends. The non devotee friends. Let's go for a party, right? It's very tempting, hard to say no. Part of my disciples children asked me that my friends asked me to go to parties. You know, isn't it okay if I go? I won't do anything. I'm going to sit there. So that's another part of it. We need, you know, to have programs for all of our youth and children that they can feel involved in Ka Consciousness something. Ka conscious parties. Recently I was in Malaysia and saw one girl like that who had a similar problem. And she told me now she going to Hare Krishna festivals, Ratha yantras and Hare Krishna celebrations. So she feels okay. Now it's very important, very big task to get our families properly oriented. So that their ideal examples that their children are all interested in Ka consciousness find it interesting and challenging. In Malaysia they've also imported the. What's it called? The Pandavasena program from England. The youth in England who had marched and prayed in the big camp demonstration for 10 years during the campaign that saved the Myanmar. And now they're still continuing on as a youth program. So now in Malaysia they started this youth program. They perform during every festival. They have their dramas and music and different programs that they perform. I saw in South Africa they also, I think this they've also imported upon. I think it's a really good idea. All over the world that becomes a youth panel because they have a heritage. It was the youth who organized this massive demonstration. At least they were the foot soldiers, very active lieutenants. Organized massive demonstration and helped to save the temple. Handrail soldiers shrinif programs for the householder. Real householders. We have to see. So many factors are there. How to maintain the temple as the household is building. How to maintain the hungry people in the world. How to feed the hungry, how to bring up the children to be Ka conscious. And Prabhupada tells the story about the householder that would in Vedic time they didn't have a dole because the whole society was socially orientated. Didn't have a huge administration that has to pay so many social workers In Carville the kind of money goes to the people that need it. Because every householder would call out if anybody was hungry, if they were hungry, if anyone was hungry, they would always get a meal. The household would have to call out three times. Anybody hungry? Anybody hungry? Anybody hungry? So this one householder was going out and one fisherman was walking by, went to his basket. And then he said, are you hungry? Have you eaten yet? He said, no, I haven't eaten. I'm not far away. They come in now. He come in. So they brought him into his yard and there they had him back and courtyard, had him sit down, fed him an ice and milk. They said, look, we live so far away. It's getting dark now. Why don't you just stay here overnight? Just keep your basket outside. The stench. Dried fish scales. So it was a tropical climate. I gave him a grass mat. Lying down in the middle of night. Said the householder got up and saw that the guest was tossing and turning. He said, what? What's wrong? Can't you get to sleep? He said, no, I'm not able to sleep without my basket. I'm used to the smell. I can't sleep without it near me. So okay, bringing your mask. The problem that he told that story because it's just illustrating how the Vihastas used to feed other people. But he told that story one time when Shamra, Sundar and Mayanpur or somewhere in Mayanpur said we could just all live here. Because he asked the question one of the Russians at that time there was the Soviets. What if they bomb us? What would we do? Oh, we can all come here and live in Mayanpur. Little grass huts in Chan Japa by the side of the river. And Shamsha said, but I cannot live without machines. The Brahma told this story and he said, you were like the fisherman. I cannot sleep without smelling a machine telephone. But now my emperor has so many machines. But you still have like A tent now at the side of the river if you want. Some people may be doing that for this festival act up. So we need this ideal to give a to penetrate society and to bring other people, other Grihastras to Ka consciousness. Most of his followers were Gyan's name of Panchata. At some point everybody was a Gyan. So this was chity Mahaprabhara Mula was primarily Agyasa Ulit. Maybe for a while Iskcon became primarily another one time everybody had faked Samyana. So it was a good move. At one point everybody had to get married. It was like the different ways. When I joined my temple president's wife I was just in the ashram for a month or so and she was telling me how if I wanted to be Krishna conscious I had to be married. But the system was to get married just like she was Himabhati and the house of Buddha at that time they said they had to be married. Husband wife would go somewhere, set up a temple and preach from there. That's how you be Krishna conscious. So if you weren't a household, I really gone pay someone. So I was really confused because I was just 19 years old and I just joined the ashram. So I went and asked Srila Brahma what should I do? Because the president's wife had told me I have to get married, I want to go back to Gandhi. And he told me, well, usually along with the Guru we decide when The Brahmacharya is 25 years old. Between 25 and 30. 30 is like the time you should make your ultimate decision. And no later than 35, absolutely. But Satan. So he gave me a rain checks until I was 25 and I went back and said till 25 don't bother me. But then Srila Prabhupada gave me something else when I was 21. But like that I used to swing sometimes I was mood whoever lived in India. So it was a pretty natural thing. But now we see that we need a society with all the different ashrams nicely developed. Arjanabu last year was giving a seminar on Vanafrast. Some of our Grihastras are getting into the Vanaprastha hod and so some of our Vanaprasthas are coming forward to take responsibilities as coming back from being temple presidents and preachers. What we need is that devotees all the ashrams are ideally developed and especially Agnihasta Ashram is very much dynamic. They should be preaching even though they have to maintain so much family responsibility. Somehow or another they should be helping in the preaching either directly or by supporting preachers. And we created our Namhatra, organized the Namhatra program. Different types of Namatas, counselor groups, motivational groups, Namatha standard groups, house programs so that Rehashas can give therapy. Advaita Gosai, he was the ideal Rehasha. And he would regularly get Bhagavatam classes. That was his regular routine. Bhakti Vinod Thakur was a government employee. He organized the Namata program. And he had hundreds and hundreds of Namatas all over Bengal with different kinds of devotees publishing books in the problem. He was publishing back to garden as Agriasta, publishing other books he was helping. He had a guest room in his house so that anytime any visiting swami would come to the town, he would offer them a room to stay in. Their guest house had a separate entrance so they didn't have to interact so much with the family. Was the standard facility. As a great Hosta, he was supporting family creatures. So we have many wonderful ideal role models that we could follow from the previous era and now in his family also have wonderful examples. Some are independent businessmen who are earning money and contributing to. Some are dedicated working memorials of Brahmanas as Pujaris and preachers and temple presidents. We have different examples. It looks like a Rabindra, but he's a GBC Griyasha guru. So in the future we want all the Mahasis, they should all be gurus. Everybody should be a guru as much as possible. Because that's how the Krishna conscious movement was spread. What Nithyananda, he had his chosati mahanta. 64 mahantas. They were not all Ramanas. Some were different castes. One was King Krishna Hora. He was also gave up his kingly duties and resist the Brahma who gave up for you. But he was preaching. He was also guru. He is the one who arranged into Nana Prabhu's marriage. Describes Krishna Hor was looking all around and he went to see Surya Sarakila and he suggested to Surya Sarakhila that he had two daughters. But they never find a match for his daughters because they were actually Lakshmi and Baruni, the two consorts of Balaram. So they were like super super ladies and couldn't find no match to them. So Krishna Hoda saw them and he suggested that why don't you have your daughters marry our Lord with another? He Arab said what? Did you not let other dudes running around here and there, you know, doing far out things? No way. My Daughters. How can I help them marry such a person? Shouting all the time, Go. Rama. Running here and there is too much. Swimming across the Ganges with his clothes on. You've heard about Nityananda, my daughters? No. Vishnuaru became very offended. He said, you don't know who Nityananda is. You don't know anything about him. He's the one most wonderful person. I'm very sorry to hear these offensive words from a Brahman and a Vaishnava like you. I'm very disgusted. He said, you don't know. You committed a big mistake. That night Sri Dasakhila had a dream. And Nithinanda appeared in his dream. When he saw Nithyananda turned into Balaram. And he saw his two daughters turned into Revati and Varuni. He saw them marrying together. Then he woke up and he realized that he made some big mistake. So he called a message and called back Krishna Maharashtra. He said okay. Angry told him what happened. So then Krishna Hara Maharaj went to see Nitinanda. Because when Lord Chaitanya took Sannyas he told Nitimanda that you should go back to Bengal and become a Grihastan. As Islamic we should show a good example how Grihastas would preach and for all. So he knows he's not going to be a good example. Krishnajana. He was a lifelong Brahmachari. So then he told Krishnama what Chitan Bharugya to get married. See if he can find anyone. We won't find anybody for a long time. Nityananda happened to me at Srivas house in Navadin area or somewhere. He was there Navadi with his associates. And he was giving darshan class. Krishna Hora came up. She told them, you know, we found a match and there's these two girls. Ladies and is it all right? And then continued on with the class. It was very casual. Accepted. Sri Krishna Bhar organized all the things for the wedding. And at that time Srikantha Sakya were living in a village called Saligram. According to the Bhakti Ramansham. And our village was about 6 km from Shalingam in the back. We went to that village. Once I went to. There was a less tent. And he would tell me when he got a brand new car and went driving over this dirt roads and got stuck in the mud and. But we found these. We found this village in the ashram of Krishna Hora. And there was Gorditai Bilis. And on the bottom of the BILI they showed us it was marked the year 450 years ago. They're really beautiful leaders. This whole village was a really amazing place. So anyway, that's another story.
But.
These are all historical places. About 20 kilometers from my airport. So they went to that village and there they did Abhishek of Nity Nanami Guru. All the Brahmanas came and bathed in turmeric water and yogurt and everything in the village of Shalikram. All the Brahmanis, all the lady Brahmanas, Vaishnavis. They did a Abhishek of the two girls. And then there was a procession of bringing Nithinanda to Shalingram. There they had the wedding ceremony which was really uphill. Paid for by the king. And then from there they went to Malady. So many different places. They went to Shantipur. They finally ended up in Korkaha. That's where the Tirananda had its house. That's where Biyochanda and Kanya Goswami appeared. I know there's a very big temple in Vadashamba Sundar center in Karnata. And a small house where Uttananda guru used to live. And there's a temple to the umbilical cords of Birachandra. And then we have in case you want to go and see the place about 6km from Taniya. Very beautiful place. Or I can show you slides of tonight. So the digitivander here also showing how to bring ideal Behestam and his wife, especially Janava Devi whenever he was present. And she would be the ideal housewife. And whenever he was outreaching she would also be taking care of the local congregation. She'd give Bhagwatam plants that she would reach. And when Lady Vamitinanda Prabhu left the world and she also was giving initiation. Jana Lavini. She was the head of the Alli Maishmala for a period of time. And then the festival of Ktari the Narajam Dhar Sthatra organized. It says how Chandra was respected as the senior devotee president of the place. Anything they did, they would ask her permission.
So.
Simultaneously both somehow they can do things like that with spiritual bodies. So English Lord Chaitanya one is devotees to demonstrate ideal examples. Religious thing is like Abhiram Thakur since he was actually a cowgirl boy. When he was shrunken down by Nithyananda people and made it to Abu Dhabi. Used to be Streeton he was trying to practice. Sridhar was a boy, but he was a former Yugoscience he had shrunk down and he was stayed over in Vrindavan Nithyananda. When he was in Vrindavan he found him there and he said, why don't you come and join us on Kirtan Bhubhuvan Kanaya is in Namibitnam studying the Santieta movement. He said, sounds great. You're too big. Nithinanda said, you're like Dwarfa Yuga's things. He wants to be there. So he took his hand on it and shrunk him down to human. And then it mentions that Shidan took a hair from his head and threw in the river and out of here the little baby girl which floated down to Jamuna and ended up in Bengal. And that later became his concert. He also was his own expansion. Interesting. So what's amazing is how Brihastas they're actively thinking how to help others, how to feed others, how to get them to be Krishna conscious, how to. They're thinking how to help everyone else. And the grim adhes are thinking how to keep everybody else down. Very interesting. So this all India in Krishna conscious society. Real Adil Ashrams and a lot of active preaching. I was some lady was asking me what they can do for preaching. I have that one lady who was very active in Anam Hut preaching and she told me that she was feeling bored sitting at home when all the kids were at school and the husband was at work. She thought this is an opportunity for me to preach. So being that she's an Indian lady. So then she would go to the apartment buildings and look for Indian names in the mailboxes and then find somebody and go and make friends with them and then convince the ladies at the house to organize Namhata house program in their home. And so we actually go with the lady to visit other locals and families and the condominium that they knew to invite them all to come for the program and then later go with their husband in the evening and have a house program. I do that for a few, maybe a few weeks or a month or two until it became established. Then she go to a Rua Kanda navy and do that for the next one. In this way she set up something like 25 Namhatus single handedly at least did the groundbreaking work and set up the program. Then they later brought the preachers to the program with them in the evening. Then she migrated to Canada. Now she's in Toronto. And Bhakti Margwa has told me that she's already set up six groups in Canada. You know she don't see buildings anymore. She sees preaching opportunities. Want to find a place one hour a day fishing for friends to become devotees. So many wonderful devotees in ISKCON are doing different programs to spread Ka consciousness in unique ways. Padma Nasi Ravishma the sight of telling us how she's studying for a PhD and how she's doing her whole thesis on psychology and environment analyzing things from the three modes of nature along with Gita and some ultimate Ka conscious purposes was pretty esoteric for me. But it sounded very interesting. Maybe we should get together with Rabindra S We need a lot of PhDs from Mayanpur University now that the Mayankur temple is going on a fast track after we figured out how to reduce the budget to 3040 million now the university also seems to be very much possible. Lot of support for establishing the university. Some of the big nor is everybody interested in the university project also. In fact Prabhupada Buddha who could tell us something is Prabhupada personally told him to do something for the university. So we like to be able to provide lots of employments in the future for Krishna Catches the rollings teachers Mayapur Here we have this beautiful fire project in New Norwood. I'm giving devotees an opportunity to live close to the nature. We met people yesterday in Biver Bay and they were then I told them about our farm here and they said oh where is it? I don't know. I know where it's but I don't know where your farm I never know how to disable. It's kind of near Mount Warning. I didn't have a card to get to them for the project here but it seems people that need to know more about all the things that we're doing and how they can plug into it. There's so many exciting things to hear devotees doing different fields. See here in Australia you need a place where they have education for devotees. So at least here every year they have the seminaries different devotees come. This year they have a ministry during this devotional reform seminar last year, one of the few years ago like the tip tomorrows. So it's actually exciting if devotees keep on developing themselves, their skills, their devotion, their abilities the more we can attract new people to participate to develop also as Prabhupada's vision Krishna Grantras have made such a huge difference in the world. I want to just take this opportunity to express appreciation for the major donor that made this year's festival so easily possible. Our Krishna Kirtan Prabhu gave a major contribution, I think about $12,000. His festival could go on very nicely without straining anybody else so much. He's going through a lot of tests this year with his health. Go to the prairie. Pray Krishna for his quick recovery and long life and his Wahi Silicon and LA Service Association. Give a horrible thank you to Krishna Kirtan.
I think the original reason for it was Prabhupada became so enthusiastic when those three Mahastra couples established Ka consciousness so powerfully and their wives. And then they all came to India Prabhupada Pandal program. And I heard the tape of the lecture and he introduced them to everybody and said, these three couples, they preached so well. He said, my spiritual master sent sannyasis to London and they didn't do anything. They were not successful. He said, but I sent Rajast and it's come out very successfully. Then he said, so my spiritual master mate said, yes, but I shall make rastas, he said. And then he talked about it.
There's a lot about your assisness and the answers. Yeah, well, he talked about how being.
Around there's no impediment to preach. Make and preach is as well and better than sannyasi. So that was his original enthusiastic reason. What seems to have happened is he became somewhat disappointed later on that so many Grahas were having so many problems with their marriages and so on.
That may have been part of the.
Reason for the switch.
You're doing a kind of a study of social development at this kind.
Yeah, I was really curious about what happened because it was so heavy. I remember when I first joined and they were trying to tell some Brahmachary. I was always following. I joined marriage. I was a little faster in the whole Diana one or the other. I just accepted my position. But I saw some Brahmachary there trying to convince me to be married. And he said. He said, I don't understand Brahmacharya. No, you should have to get married. He said, well, he said, Bhakti Siddhan Kishara Solitabhu was a Brahmacharya all his life. He said, do you think you could be a Brahmacharya like Bhakti Siddhan was.
There as one in Kakur. You know, this is.
And then about four or five years later, you know, everybody was supposed to be a Brahmachari all their life. The whole thing had changed. And I heard the same guy trying to get some Brahmachari out of getting married. He says, I want to do the hospital. They said, no, it's a, you know, in the black hole. And he said, but Buck, even though Todd Pooler was a grass, do you.
Think you can pick a hot foot?
It was quite a change.
Another point of interest is that in.
Australia.
Every one of them should be married. So while on one continent there was a tendency towards the in Australia.
So there was never a Sannyas search. Only here.
I've heard stories that something else has come to stand with Paul, I think, who wanted to send all the free houses to Australia.
It's called transportation.
There's an alternation. That's a statement or a question. It's like a comment.
I get this impression from the writers in the beginning of Chiricahpa used to tolerate the.
There was one point onwards, I don't exactly accept it. There was some discussion, I think in.
1972 actually sanctioned it at all. But when he began to discuss it, this is in America. And again it was the beginning of the big Sannyasi thing. And Kabbat was being told by his leaders that most of the men are going to be Brahmacharis and we're going to have a problem. There's going to be all these unmarried women. What do we do with unmarried women? And then Karpod, that's when he started considering polygamy as an alternative. And while he was discussing it, some guys, my impression was junk the gun.
And started taking.
And then there was a discussion back and forth between Prabhupada and his leaders. I remember my GBC coming to me, said to me, we may all have to take second wives.
So it was going around. Maybe this was really going to happen.
But then, then Prabhupada decided no. And there was some, he said strictly forbidden. A letter to Karanda, a letter to Rupanuga. He said it will create chaos. People are not qualified to do this anymore. It will simply lead to more sex life and we're against sex life. And also there was migrate, legal problems. These were various reasons. So that. That was it as far as I knew.
What about the places where it's legal?
Well, that was only one of the considerations.
Your father was also saying you would protect your own time.
Well, you know, especially it's not like a, you know, menage A or something. You're supposed to have, you know, a separate house or establishment for each wife. You know, it's not like a elder whereas, you know, you had to be really wealthy.
I seen the Arabs playing with the four wives and they got a stack of passports with lonely hicks.
Came up.
And most of the men are going.
To remain Brahmacharis otherwise turn turned out.
To be in the event. Not true.
Actually, we could have like convince if there was going to be unmarried women and no men for the victim we would go that route.
Convinced the paradise. But then they asked about this. Well, of course most of the men don't and they understand I'm actually with problems.
Somebody said that.
Train our men to adapt to the future. He has the responsibilities that a traditional Brahmachari set up where somebody Brahmachari. And they grew up with a very good family, a good role model family. And they would be sometimes a Brahmacharya. But then they go back to their family and get married somehow within our Brahmacharya ashrams as most of them eventually do become Grihastas. Maybe there should be some seminars on Grihasta property. Something to orient them to proudly see women in the proper way.
