2004 || Ratha Yātrā + Question Answer Session || Atlanta, US #JayapatakaSwamiArchives

Transcribed Q&A from a 2004 Ratha Yātrā event in Atlanta led by Jaya Pataka Swami. Speakers discuss Gaudiya-Vaishnava theology (Shakti and Krishna), practical preaching methods, handling skeptics and Mayavadi philosophy, reincarnation/regression accounts, distinctions among types of gurus, and the nature and purity of devotional service. The tone is pastoral, didactic, and devotional, addressing practical problems faced by preachers and seekers.
Sam. Sadama. It's. It's Sam. Me, Ram. Sam. Ram Ra. It's Sam. I don't know Sam. It's Sam.
This is a question and answer session that the bodies sent. Any philosophical questions? I'm trying to reply how to explain the glories of Shimati Rama to new people? Well, she is the original energy.
Just.
Like the sun and sunlight. What is the meaning of sun without the sunlight? So Krishna is Shaktriman and his energy is Shakta. So she's the Avi Shakti. She's also specifically the Allahini Shakti. She's the pleasure poet who says one and he made himself into two. So he does things to his energies. Just like in the government, they have ministers and secretaries and so many people that perform. The president of the country, he may pass some order that now all shops built illegally on the side of the street will be torn down. The president doesn't want to tear them down himself.
He has.
Police, ministers, so many other people that execute this order.
Right?
The Christian has energy, executed this order. Some are for executing orders, some are for giving him pleasures, some are for performing different functions. There's so many energies in us, they're executing their functions. So amongst them what are supreme words.
When they face a group of Mayavadis that are very strong.
What is the.
Most logical way to approach so we can establish from the point of the shastras, what we are seeing is fully backed up by shastras.
Way to say to prove that what you're saying is fully backed by shastra is by quoting Shastra. Whatever we're saying, it's backed up Ashastra. Just like in the last verse of the Bhagavad Gita 14th chapter, Krishna says Brahmana Batista, I am the foundation of a person of a. There's so many different verses which support whatever the point set. But sometimes there are innocent preach innocent people. They're already open that you can preach to them. Sometimes there are people who are like hardcore mindabilities. Doesn't matter what you say, doesn't matter how much you repeat them, they don't want to accept. But somehow in their brain it's already got short circuited so long that it doesn't going to be circuited freshly very easily. The Prabhupada said if they're not envious and if they don't, if you can get them not to talk when they're in their temple or with devotees, then the Bhagista has to one way is to engage them in service by doing service over a period of time devotional service. And gradually another change in height. I knew one person. He was really high for man. He used to meditate naked in his closet. All things of. He was really, really into the impression. Almost a nervous break.
Completely.
I know, like banana. Just on point. I can't talk to anymore. It's too much like wow. It's like a big shock. So then I left next day. I think it was all happy. Oh, what happened? I called up the San script and what does this mean here it says Brahmana. I am the base of the Brahman. And how is Rahma is saying that Brahmana is the base of Krishna. How Here it says Krishna say I am the basis of Brahmana. Oh, that means the forehead of Brahma, which is totally bogus. It's completely prayer parts here. But this does not at all refer to the forehead of Brahman Brahman. The whole verses. The whole section is. I'm learning about Vermont. But anyway, the guy was. I survived one of the Buddhist philosophies, I think my body. But he was a real nice guy. He used to come to the temple, sweep the floor, help us get government permissions. He's influential. So I saw this guy. It's one of these tough nuts that PR was talking about. So he just engaged him in service one day, came to temple with a little BO short. It said the Path of Jyoti. Or someone said, look at. It's okay. Nice you put in this book. But you can't just do it in here. Keep it in the house or something, you know, it would just be real nice. The guy engaged in Kana. He moved to the temple of Chandra Krishna after a few years. He told me that, you know, now I'm starting to see what you're talking about. It took years to get a chain and finally one day clicked Krishna as the supreme personality Godhead. And the Brahman is his defulgence. It took years. Some people are like that doesn't matter what. Even if you defeat them, they're not going to accept. So if you get someone like that, then don't waste your time, just instead don't. So whatever it is, is anyone actual truth? And all the Vedas say this is a peshat about chain the holy name. And avoid it just. Anyway, even my own body is indeed a chain like Krishna. But if you get someone who's really willing to listen, it's better one on one. If you got a whole group of my bodies, then you know, they're going to gang up on you. Otherwise it's always recommended. You can start asking them questions. What's your time? You just start asking questions. Nobody had the answer. If you ask certain questions, there's certain point questions and my bodies don't have the answer.
Then.
That'S another way of being discussing with the Prakasha of the nice. He gives all of the animals very so simply. At one point in Proverbs went to India he figured out that chapter as a separate book called it Vocetanya and five features or something like that. Five features. Just that chapter. That chapter is especially all the the defects of Mayan B. Not all. There's one book by one of their followers called Mayavasi SATA the Hundred defects of Maya. There's all kinds of works out there.
Truth.
My Avada philosophy doesn't make any sense. If you're actually arguing somebody's already short circuit of their intelligence and everybody is.
Playing.
Out a judge. When you preach to people whether they're high core short circuited malady. There's only one talking all day today. But everybody. All the disciples wanted to see me chanting. She was very concerned because she had a guru in India and she wanted to ask me questions. Well, because the guru praying that was demanding absolute surrender and everything. And she wanted to curse and question her. I could never talk to her. That's a big problem. Most of the gurus today in their.
Lives that.
Just like Mel touched by the lips of a poisonous serpent is not to be drink drunk. Similarly, the nectar of pastimes of Lord Chaitanya or Ka are not to be heard from the lips of the non Raishma always twisting to their point of view? No, you can speak, but if somebody prefers to write it then you get a priority during preaching. Preaching for new people. Is there a specific step to preach? For example, do you tell them that you are not body first then talk about Krishna and so on. Preaching is the slogan time, place and circumstance. That you can't really separate that from preaching because it's like. Preaching is like being a doctor. You want to give a medicine. You got all kinds of medicines, right? Doctrine had some that they can apply. But every patient is like different. Usually you go the easiest way first. Don't get into big controversial points first. Try it the easy way. That's the moment. But with experience you start to learn where is the peripheral list? A little bit. Enough to know where the person is at what their point of view is so that you can give a correct answer. If you don't Listen a little bit to them and know really what their question is, what their doubts are, what their point of view is. Then you just start speaking. Then you may be addressing a totally different point than what they were thinking. If you want a general rule of thumb is to take the easiest points first. But there may be always exceptions. There may be a person who just asks a particular question and if you go through some routine or you're not the body, you're this person, you may miss the whole point. What their question is, what their doubts. You may raise up good questions. So directly try to. If you can address specific doctor you have first and then after that.
You.
Can go to the which other octuples past names. There's an Ashtakalim. Ashtakal. It means that there's like in a day of 24 hours, divide the day up in three hour segments. So three times three times eight is 24.
Right.
So for every three hours there's a different place, a different leva that goes on. So some of the bodies, when they become very Krishna consciousness, they meditate on the Lord this time of day he spends this activity this day he goes in the Radhakun and then he goes to this place and he looks like there's a whole routine what he does. Essential for us to know those things at this point.
If the ego is part of this material path.
False.
Do you ever get rid of that Possible?
Yes. Do you believe in internal worlds? Then you're lost in somebody.
Within this lifetime that we live.
Then your ego really goes there. I am the soul. This is me. Yes.
Good question about incarnation. Like, you know, most of us been gifts incarnation. Most of us been around here should be like thousand thousand five. So we like get from the second flashback but most likely to see a tax or similar. Most of us want to get that, you know, flashback. And like every 100 years it's about 4 billion people die. 10% of that 4 million people, 1% of that is 40 million people. Seem like only one or two people in Bengal.
Question is.
If reincarnation exists, should we cut a second flashback? Remember that's one. It wouldn't last long.
If reincarnation visit. Should we have flashbacks?
Couple step.
Yeah, couple second flashback. Why a couple seconds? A couple minutes or more. I think they don't. Most people do have what they call like I've been there, you know, like I've been here before with some kind of premonition. I don't know what the technical word for that feeling. How many of you ever had a so that connection with the subconsciousness is there.
But.
Somebody asked Srila Prabhupada, wouldn't he greatly remember our previous life? And the Prabhupada said that, well, you've already got so much Maya and so much distraction in your mind for this life life. So if you're going to remember, I don't remember your previous life become much more. It'll be like worse. In my previous life, my wife, she did this to me. It was really bad. You mean all like, you know, my husband cheated on me, you know, maybe this life, the husband that cheated on me, whatever, become a real psychosis. And subconsciously it is for some people. There was a lady who was always doubting her husband. This is psychology case history. And the husband said, I honest, I'm really not messing around with anybody else. I'm not looking, I really love my wife. But she always dialed in. So they took her to a psychologist and even could find any reason why she was doubting. But she had this very intense paranoia. So then he took her in an aggression where by hypnosis they can take a person to their previous life. And he said, now you're 14, 12, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1. Now you're back in the womb of your mother. Now you're in your previous life. Now speak to me in English and don't move. And tell people things like this, you know, sometimes they go on the previous life, they start speaking other languages. They tell them what to do at.
That time.
Anyway, so they took her back. And then she was in her previous life. She said she was in Scotland. She got married when she was 19. It was in something like that. I just remember all the details right now. It's like she got married this L shaped church, that's for sure. And. But then it took her a year after you like this. Very soon after their marriage, for some reason the husband took her off and left. And.
So.
That was the reason why she was always fearing that this husband would leave. That was his conclusion. Took her back, brought her out. Now here they had the whole thing on video and they had this time they had like Scotland's an old place that's been around for years and years in the world. So they went there and actually researched. Is there such a church in such a town? Was she going to name her name, her husband's name? So they found it was such a church that was L shaped church. And the church had records going back for months. So then they checked in the record and they found out that There was such a lady who married such a man at that time, you know, 18, whatever it was. So there's like all kinds of this. We had here a few years ago a parapsychologist. I don't care about psychologist, but he was. I think he was even a professor somewhere. He. I think he said he did perform 10,000 regressions. I can't imagine how long that took him to do. But he had so many case histories of taking people back. Aggression, oud out of body, ood out of body experiences, O B E out of bodies. Also he was talking about near death experience, different things. So he had all kinds of case histories that he was talking about at the time. So there is like that kind of also. How do you explain how did this person know have this experience in this life? They were feeling fearful happiness and how she believed me. She was paranoid all the time, always doubting. Then she would take her back and she has this experience and she says how she was deserving of her previous life. So this kind of evidence is also. I don't know. I know I had a disciple, I have a disciple who was quite good at regression. I remember he went to South America and the castle general wanted to be regretted few people again. He was repressing people to previous life. So people, if you use that system you can. Everybody wants to. They can find out the previous life. But one devotee told me that.
They.
Found that they were like a warrior in Rajasthan or something. They were there in some battle fighting with some other Rajputs or something. So it's not like watching the TV or something. You were there. It's like a memory. You're there. You can smell the blood. You can smell the horses and the dust and streaming and emotion. You know you're reliving exactly what you were doing In a self reliance life. That's really heavy technical explanation or a simple explanation. One thing is Prabhupada is just simple explanation of deductive knowledge that materially.
We.
Come to conclusions based on our experience. So that has certain indications. They say that you see every swan you see is white. You see so many Swans. You see 100,000 swans everywhere you see swans and they're all white. So you deduct that, okay, swans are white. We never went to the Rhine river or wherever it is somewhere in Germany or actually black swans. All of a sudden you see a black swan. Your whole deductive reasoning is disproves. So material knowledge, it's always eliminated. You're never 100% sure because it's based on what you're observing. Just like the, what's it here? The fda, remember the Food and the Drug Administration, they approved medicine. So they'll make some company tests, you know, how many thousands or hundreds of people and then after testing, if nothing shows up wrong, then okay, they give a permission. But then after some time when it goes in the market and millions of people are taking it, then they find that for every hundred thousand people assisting people go blind, get narrow to get leukemia or something, withdraw the medicine from the shelf and say, you know, do this, you know, tell you you're never 100% sure, you're just neglecting based on what you're observing. So the more people you observe and I mean the more there's always the possibility that well, there's some other situation that you didn't know about where spiritual knowledge is called inductive disease. But we are getting the truth from the absolute truth itself. So it's being handed down by the discipline succession and therefore inductive. Let me get into explanation why something's happening. Simple example is that maybe there's a noise upstairs. So you start thinking what's happening? You know, stuff is wrong, they start speculating. Maybe somebody's playing ping pong on the floor, some other people are playing golf. You go upstairs, you find that somebody is sick and they have, you can hear speculating. You go up, then you find out somebody comes and tells you this is what's happening. So that's a conductor, somebody. But in this sense it's from a transcendental experience. It's actually more. We think that if you see it, it's to believe it, but that's not necessarily so. People living in an island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, they would see the sun come out of the ocean in the morning from the east and they would see it set in the ocean in the west. So they deducted that the son is born from the ocean, dies in the ocean, reborn every day. Because that's all they can see. They don't see anything else. That was their experience. So whether it be actually somebody from the broader perspective, someone who has transcendental knowledge, they can hand that down and that's actually reliable to get the knowledge that's subject to the four defects of material observers. That they have imperfect senses, that they liable to cheat, that they are subject to illusion and they make mistakes. Another question. These are the people who are trying to see liberation, the people that do devotional service out of anger, revenge. I'm going to be a better Devotee I come out to Ellie, my wife, I got to show that guy I'm the best devotee. This I from. So that's like, you know, the morning there is like a kind of anger. And then somebody says, I'm going to do devotional service because, you know, I want to get that.
I want.
I want to. Through devotional service, I can get the blessings of Krishna to become the King of Timbuktu. So that's devotional service mixed with passion. And somebody who does a devotional service because they want liberation, different way, this becomes like an amorth, not harming anybody else, not something that's. If somebody wants to serve Krishna because they want to please Krishna, it says unlimited permeations of mixed emotion. Just like if you mix primary colors of yellow, red and blue, you get millions limited kinds of colors. So you mix these different desires with devotional service. You get so many different shades of color, but doesn't satisfy the heart. But pure devotional service is only one kind. How many here want pure devotional service? Thank you very much.
Prabhupada is the Jagadh Guru of the universe. And he is the pure representative of Krishna. The only way to obtain pure devotional service is by serving him through the Ishkon. In this lifetime, in this Next, let's say 10,000 years.
We don't present things in that kind of absolute way. We rather say it in a more positive way that as you said, one should perform devotional service purely pure devotional service. Srila Prabhupada was a pure devotee. He presented the process of pure devotional service ideal way, in a practical way people can practice in this time. So if you want to receive pure devotional service, you're sure to be able to achieve that. If you follow class teachings.
To say.
That, well, there's no other pure devotee. Whenever specific syntax, he may have other Godbrothers and other Vaishnavas, then we have to judge whether they're pure or not. We don't just make a category statement. Let's say we're the only people that pure devotees. Because it's open for anybody to be pure devotion. They follow the scriptures if they follow the king as a child. So we're not saying that Brahman ever made the kind of statement, we're the only way in that sense. In other sense, he said, if you want to be Ka conscious without practicing Ka consciousness, following what you tell, following outside of the Ka conscious movement, then you're hallucinating. He also said, sadhvi has packoned me at that time where was anybody else practicing? But at the same time you don't make such kind of absolute value statements. Generally nobody can ever do Krishna practice this Practically it's more of a practical stuff. Theoretically some of them dead. Anybody reads the scripture theoretically, but practically they can't unless they have a bona fide guru. And so many other factors. But other ways it says one can by chanting Hare Krishna they can achieve perfection even without going through all the formal processes of initiation or samskaras. But generally one needs to hand that just verifying that the Holy name is powerful enough that it could deliver somebody say that somebody that one of Kabas books and Eskimo land or somewhere, I don't know somewhere where there's no devotees out in the middle of the Antarctica some place where there's just this holy. I don't know where the place is. But they read Gamra's books, they follow the instructions, they start chanting. Then there's no reason why they couldn't get back to Krishna.
Also.
Say that there is such a place and they're struggling trying to figure it out. They confused Krishna sends them a guru. Krishna sends them someone to help them without a false ego. I don't need anybody. I'll do that on my own. They reject that person and that's their self offensive. So the Holy name has the power. But whether the person can understand it, whether they imply it in most cases Krishna sends some help because although the Holy name has the power, but you're much safer. It's recommended that one should have a root. Sometimes they say my God brothers are preaching. And sometimes it says well, some of my God brothers are preaching. They're trying to Anyone appreciate this one that one else was trying to preach. Principles are absolute. Follow those principles. Apply. We also apply the principles in the U.S. we follow in his footsteps. We're going to achieve that good results. Anybody is always free to follow the same principles only stopping them. So if they do, then they also follow in Prabhupada. In one sense Prabhupada is following Rabiniya Sachara practically it then you have to see who's actually following. We personally have confidence that Prabhupada being the best way. We're trying to convince the other missions and other organizations to come in line with Prabhupada vision. That's the safest way. That's the authorized way. Somebody's envious different things envious against world.
Here's.
Last question. This one Would you explain the difference Between a teacher guru and a teacher.
Guru.
Grace devotees instructors. These are your first devotees that instruct.
You.
Show you the way. He help you become convinced about practicing Krishna consciousness there which is called vitamin Pradasha gurus. Then you get some instruction from different gurus and you see the guru that gets the most instruction. Many sixth gurus are giving instructions with different sixth gurus. They give instruction amongst them usually the one that gives the most instruction. It's up to the disciples to decide if they want to take Yusuf Yoga. That's their when they take initiation one of their see sugar gurus they take initiation and then that person becomes a Niksha guru. So he takes a commitment to see that the disciple gets back to Ka with a contract or counting. If the disciple does something they have to come and Vatican either to get the disciple or somehow he has to arrange to get the disciple back.
And.
That the Riksha were under normal traditional circumstances is considered to be the primary guru and the other Sikhsha gurus assist him to get the sanctity back. There may be some exceptional circumstances where the Diksha guru authorizes somehow a Sikhsha guru Shojo guru with that saying normally just a statutory arrangement as the Visha grows into the primary guru and everybody else helps. Now some of our associates may also voluntarily take a very big responsibility. Some take more, some take less to deliver them than voluntary. If a Sikhsha guru gives an instruction to a disciple and the disciple follows him, he does the following may accrue some bad karma or something. The instruction wasn't correct, wasn't a good instruction. The Sikhsha guru is responsible for that. He is liable to get reactions. But otherwise if the disciple just in the ordinary course of their daily activities they start to break principles or they do some bad karmas or something. It's the Diksha guru who has to take the responsibility Sikhsha who is responsibility. It strikes when the Diksha guru's got total responsibility for what's happening within. That's why Prabhupada said once that if a disciple disobeys the guru or breaks the principles and he's considered a guru guru, a pure guru. So being a six year guru is a little less of a karmic implications. But you're still responsible for wherever the shadow response he or she is trust. In some cases the six shade.
It.
Functions like additional find a spiritual master and takes rejects one spiritual mass he won't get another one for 10 million births says one crore one. There was one time there was this hitay God who took some Initiation. Took initiation from some Vajravasi guru and was speaking as God a little bit.
Ban him.
Said he's just become a saint and come to the temple. And then one point said he won't get a bona fide guru for 200,000 a day. Young people said, like, that's heavy. He said, no, I reduced it. Normally it's supposed to 2% discord.
Okay, this is a controversial question regarding this, but I had a question before. I don't know what to ask. For example, what.
Okay.
For example, sometimes once one has a strong desire.
Do some feathers. Does anybody here like to help prepare for tomorrow's offering? There's some things which can be cut now and then. Does the loudspeaker work in the kitchen anymore?
Nice, strong spiritual desires. Like for example, say, oh, I would like to go to Maya, be completely absorbed in devotional service, leave my body. And this is a desire that is compatible with the desires of me or mission. Because you don't want us to go to the spiritual world being completely observing devotional service. So why it happens that sometimes doesn't really manifest is a strong desire. And there are so many activities in the process of creation consciousness that can satisfy these desires if they are bona fide. So why sometimes they take forever or they don't have.
Well, because someone may have so many bona fide desires. But Christianly, how does one plan on? We don't know what Krishna's planning is. We have another plan. It's like say Prabhupada was happy to remain at his house or something, but then he was reminded that he had to carry out the order of his guru so that when finally he went from there. Or maybe somebody's happy to remain in Vrindavan, nice place. But then they needed to go out and preach, spread Krishna consciousness. We may have some particular preference what we like to do, but ultimately we want to do what Krishna wants us to do. That's one factor. The other factor is the course of the holy Dham. It's a special blessing to enter the holy Dham. And the special blessing there will stay in the holy Dham. Some people go to the Dan because of offenses they get removed from the Dhamma. Some people, they had other things they had to do. I mean, they have multiple desires, one of which was mind and holy Dhamma. We see that in perspective of a few layers of other desires that may not have worked out exactly at the time period they wanted because of this ambition. It's pretty complicated trying to ascertain that Prabhupada wanted to get a building for Krishna in Calcutta. He wanted to get the property in the Bombay. And the secretaries gave that property back to Mr. Nair. He probably had to go there and do a whole number. Got to properly back. Sometimes we have a desire. But Maya has another desire. Maybe also Maya. Maya doesn't want you to be in the house. So Maya puts up different distractions. Thank you for watching our videos. Be sure to subscribe to our channel.
