2004 || Slideshow Presentation, Kīrtana and Śrīmad Bhāgavatam 2.9.35 || Kolkata, India

A 2004 Kolkata lecture by Jaya Pataka Swami (video/slideshow) exploring what constitutes life and consciousness from a Vedic/Hindu perspective. The speaker contrasts material/scientific accounts (evolution, genetics, cloning, brain studies) with the Bhagavad Gita’s teachings (atma, kshetrajna, parā/prākṛti), emphasizes active forms of yoga (karma/bhakti/buddhi) for modern life, and addresses ethics, plant/animal consciousness, and reasons people seek spiritual solutions.
Who lives on the side of the Sundar bone jungle.
And he told me how when these.
People go in, you'll see all the time about honey from the Sundarbans that.
They.
Go by bulls and they're looking and following the bees, where the bees.
Are coming from, where the hives are. And these little boats go in small.
Canals and creeks inside the jungle.
And they're not the only one that's there. There's also a tiger there waiting.
They kill so many every year.
How many people are you killed? So many animals have intelligence, but their.
Intelligence is limited to eating and sleeping.
And how to eat and how to sleep and how.
How to fight a paint, how to.
Fight a war with opposing competitors and things like that. So the human being only uses their intelligence for these things. Then they're really just nothing but a sophisticated animal. Superior intelligence means that we're actually thinking.
About higher existential realities.
Who am I? Where have I come from? Where am I going to things like that.
Okay, yeah, we can discriminate.
What's this?
Let's say we can.
What's right? What's wrong?
We have a harm, discrimination.
Animals tend to fall for their instincts. Just like if it's going to be an exam. You can stay up all night and pray.
You can perform austerities.
I'm sure all of you have performed some different kinds of austerities.
And.
Of course a higher purpose for that is our spiritual realization and to be inquisitive about the reality beyond our 8,400,000, I think.
They say 900,000 aquatics, 2 million plants and unmoving. 1,100,000 insects and reptiles. 1,000,000 types of birds and 3,000,000 types of beasts.
4,000,000 types of humans.
Who says that the Metas aren't scientific? They're giving all kinds of information which is quite scientific. I was personally I joined this movement when I was 19. I graduated early 15 years old from.
My 12th grade by getting promoted advanced.
And I was impressed because I was a science student. I was studying physical chemistry. And when I started reading the Vedas.
Actually, although they would have to study every kind of living being not only.
On this planet, and this is not only on this planet, this is other planets as well.
The Vedas are talking about the whole universe.
So where do we fit in little statistics here. Human beings are only.
5% of the.
Types of life for the quantity, of course, quantity of human beings compared to the quantity of mosquitoes. I think Calcutta's got more mosquitoes than all the human beings on the planet.
So.
Or Any other kind of fish?
There's animal fish I think are pretty well thinned out by all the fishermen. Where is the life?
Body signifies the living factor. Where is the life force?
Any ideas here?
See now science tells us that maybe so many different theories. What's life? So think about what is the life?
It's really interesting.
Okay, some say 4.5 billion years ago, gas, fire, water, primordial soup, chemicals.
Life.
You believe it? They can't do it now. They're not able to reproduce. That little chemical reaction produces life. If they could, they wouldn't get the mobile prize. They would get, you know, every prize under the sun. But they don't have that. Do the theory according to Bhagavad Gita. But let's go, that's this one theory. You can decide which one you want to buy into. We'll be neutral here. What is the Bhagavad Gita? Okay, let's go back and forth. Bhagavad Gita says material bodies are always changing. Material energy is always changing. But antimatter is always the same. That the living force is a different kind of energy. It's not the same. Bhagavad Gita clearly says it says Parapakriti and Apara Prakriti. So the living force is a totally different kind of energy. Maybe in non scientific terms we say spiritual energy. But in more scientific terms maybe the proper word would be anti material. Maybe 50, 60 years ago. So who are you? Genetic code makes no antimatter and the body is dead. Genetic code. It's the only mechanism now they're doing. If you have a genetic code then they can change you. Because now they're doing biological chemistry, what do you call biogenetic engineering. And they have them change their code. I mean they change who you are. That's what our body genetics are about, the bodies. Because you got identical twins, right? According to what they call identical twins. Well, they're two different personalities. They have different personality, different nature because a living force is different. Living force or the consciousness is different in people. I gave a seminar once to some students and Mauritius on the ethics about human cloning. But that's a whole other topic. I mean that took out so 45 minutes. And that's all the time I have anyway. But that's interesting because then we discussed that even if you have all the different clones that look the same, but the people won't be the same, just the bodies would be similar. The body changes when the Bhagavad Gita we Go from birth to youth, old age. When the body dies, the body is always changing. But the person, the witness, the person that's seeing through the body.
We are.
Actually always the same. Bhagavad Gita calls a Kshatra Gya, the knower of the field of activities. It's very interesting how scientific actually the Bhagavad Gita is. Prabhupada used to call it the science of the self. It's relegated to a religious book, but it actually should be studied in universities and in bits University they have a PhD course and a postgraduate course which is organized by the Bhaktivedanta Institute from Bombay. And they give bits of bilari and they use some of the Vedic texts to study as a reference for their consciousness study. And that's considered quite scientifically acceptable. You think about it, how our body is changed, but we don't change. We keep seeing throughout. Even though we change, the consciousness is the same.
Okay.
Is life only a material phenomena? The way chemicals interact with simply complex organization of material elements. Think about it. Where is the source of energy in the body? Where is the source of consciousness? You can transplant all the parts of the body, but if you could transplant consciousness. Okay, let me. That's what these cloner people think. They think that when the person dies, you make a clone of your body and then you just transplant the consciousness to the next body. You live forever. They're really demonic actually. But only slight. Catch is they don't know how to transplant the consciousness. We'll figure that out later. In the meantime, for several hundred thousand dollars, which is equal to many, many crores of rupees, they'll freeze your body when you die. So that once they discover how to transplant consciousness, then they'll wake you up. Meantime they spend your money and they enjoy life. It's a good record. Anyway, it's life. So his life is the energy, the brain. The brain. But even the brain is also kind of a machine. There was one Ph.D. they discovered he didn't even have a brain. He just had a little gland in his head and low brain. Couldn't figure out how he was functioning. His remains one of those mysteries. Bhagavad Gita says soul is in the heart or the atma is in the heart and spreads consciousness just like the sun spreads the sunshine throughout the solar system. That's why he did a little experiment. Cut off the circulation by wrapping a rope around your arm. Then after a while you would lose the consciousness in that arm, right? Heart terminated. You just Put a rope. We can do it. If you don't believe me, we can pay any one of you. I can tie your arm up. After a while, what happens? You lose the sense of feeling.
You won't feel.
It becomes numb. Because you are the Atman. You are in the heart. And you are spreading the consciousness throughout your body through the bloodstream. You cut off the bloodstream, you cut off the connection. This body is a biological machine. And you are the driver. Only thing is, we think we are the machine. So therefore we start acting as if we are the machine. And yoga means to know the difference between the machine and the driver of the machine. We are the driver. We are the knower of the machine. Oh my goodness. It's a student. He got smashed on his two wheeler. He's dead.
Oh my God.
What's the difference between a live person and a dead body?
That's what the Bible Gita says.
Science says this was a machine, this is a life. And now it's dead. It's finished.
It's crazy really.
We work the whole life.
That's.
I was in college once in America. I was going to do all kinds of things. And suddenly I heard this professor tell me the life of Lord Buddha and.
How there was reincarnation and he saw.
The old man, the sick man, and then the dead person, and then finally the child and how they get reborn.
I didn't even have exposure to reincarnation before.
It was the first time I heard. It was when I was visiting professor from Harvard. Came and spoke, spoke at Brown where I was studying and completely put me into a shock. I said, well, what is the purpose of life? I asked all my science teachers, they said, well, don't ask these questions, you know, we just teach the subjects, you know. You're asking too many questions right now. It's like a whole. So then I determined I wanted to find out what is life. And I couldn't find it in the university. But I'm not saying we should go to university.
We should get our education.
But as we're getting an occupation, it's not going to answer all the questions of our life. For that we need a separate program which is yoga.
And.
So let's go on here.
What we got.
Here we have the poor student here, okay? Here we have other. There's different kinds of scientists. Some scientists are really short sighted. And some people are very broad minded. Like Einstein. He believed that there's a supreme intelligence. He got sound like this very well. We will create life from chemicals. Look at that butterfly Darwin, he got sick when he saw a butterfly. He couldn't explain why evolution would create such a beautiful thing predators or when he said when he saw a peacock feather he got sick to his stomach because it didn't make his whole theory with throwing out the peacock feathers are.
Only visible.
To certain eyes. The light reflects off those feathers. It's very interesting. Anyway, that'll give you time for question and answering.
So this brick walking. Desire and willing.
You all have desires, I'm sure. Desires to get ahead in life. Desires to enjoy life. Desires to be happy and peaceful and.
Rich and famous and whatever.
So many things. Maybe even to be God conscious.
The material point of the computer.
Can you hear the sound on.
No, no.
The sound on the computer. So no, it's on. Bodies different. We are the bodies, right? This is our material conditioning. Either elephant and you're a bull or you're a tortoise or so you're Professor. Spiritual point of view. Individual souls have the same quality. Those are the living forces here. I don't have my laser pointer. They said the bodies are different according to the Vedas, but each one has its own consciousness. Each consciousness is an individual. We can get transferred from one kind of body to the next. We got air conditioning. In this, this special spiritual viewpoint, we are all eternal individual spirit souls. We are spiritual parcels of the supreme Spirit. In other words this. Not only we are individual spiritual entities, but the Vedas also say there's a Brahman, we're Brahman, we're spiritual conscious entities. And then also the Vedas say there's Param Brahman, supreme spiritual entity. So yoga means that the individual soul connects with the supreme soul, individual living entity connects with supreme living entity. And as a result we get unlimited intelligence, force, energy capacity. The other kind of very process. It's very scientific, also very. It takes many, many years to be successful with that yoga. And right now in Kali Yuga, the present modern age, people are very disturbed, agitated. We see so many things that disturb us one way or another that affect our consciousness. So very difficult to be very peaceful, to sit down and meditate. So therefore the Bhaiavad Gita Ka had given different kinds of yoga and he especially recommended to Arjuna who was an active person. How many of you are active people that move around and do things and go by buses and trams and motorcycles and cars? Active. How many are active? How many of you kind of just sit in one with so many? So this is the active yoga for active people. And most of the people in the world today are Active people. So the Bhagavad Gita tells us about is different kinds of yoga. When people think of yoga, they usually only think of the Hatha Yoga, meditation yoga. They don't know about the yoga that Arjuna was practicing on a battlefield. Let me put consider what could be a more traumatic, stressful, difficult situation than a battlefield? You being a yogi and meditate on the battlefield. Obviously he wasn't talking about doing Hatha yoga. He was talking about doing active yoga, Karma yoga or Bhakti Yoga. Buddhi Yoga, Yoga of intelligence. We are all very intelligent young men and we have the capacity to be very expert Buddhi yogis. By engaging our intelligence and our energy in KA's service, then we become.
This.
Way you can perfect your life and be a perfect yogi while doing whatever your career may be, whether it's law or whether it's business or whether it's administration or whether you're an IES officer or a politician or a doctor.
Or.
Whatever it might be that you want to do as a career, you can perform this active kind of meditation in your respective career. And just like Arjuna in the battlefield, he was the most peaceful person there because he was doing everything for a higher purpose. What we do things for is really a higher understanding of yoga. What is our motive? What is our purpose? Just like to say somebody takes a knife and stabs somebody else, shoves it in their stomach. Is it a crime? How many think it's a crime? Many people. What if the person was a doctor and he were on a surgical table and he was doing an operation to remove a tumor from your intestine, would it be a crime then? And if he was a thief and he was robbing your money and he wanted to steal your money and so he stabbed you, would that be a crime? What's the difference? Both are stabbing you, both are putting a knife in your belly. Huh? He's doing it for a good purpose. That's right. He's doing it with a good intention and a good purpose and a good faith. For the thief is doing it out of grief and selfishness and cruelty and without any consideration or respect for the other person's life and health. So what's the difference is the consciousness. So what we're dealing is you go to the more select the physical. This is your gross level. Then we have the mental. So Jnana Yoga is in the mental, the Hatha Yogas and the physical. But then what happens is you go using these different. We're using right to the existing Intelligence and the consciousness. Why do we do things? Because if you do things for the right reason, if you do things for a spiritual reason, even your studies are considered yoga. It's amazing. You could be studying a chemistry test. That means practicing yoga. If you consider that my chemistry test and my study of chemistry or whatever it could be. I just picked out anything random. Because I was a chemistry student. Is because I want to use my education when I have it. For serving Krishna, for helping people to get out of the ignorance of their material life. To improve the quality of life in the world. To make a difference. Prabhupada was also a chemist by the way. For whatever it's worth. English master the beholder. He was working as a chemist in chemical factory making medicines. They they laboratories. Avarchande chemist later. But interesting was working for one laboratory.
Anyway.
There is litigant but he had different. So we have to do something to live. We have to earn money to maintain our family.
So that's.
But then just like Arjuna, he was an acceptor. He was a warrior. So when he was doing his activity for that higher purpose. Okay, let's. You found it.
You can. You can.
Why don't you like turn this on?
So.
We want you all, we'd like you, to invite you and inspire you and to become yogis. But that means the kind of active yogis mooning yogis. Yogis of intelligence, yogis of devotion. Where we use our emotions, we use our intelligence. We use our purposes to lift us higher. Doing things for the right reasons. Doing things for a higher reason. Not like out of instinct or just blindly.
So.
I gave once a talk at. What's it? Indian Institute of Management, IIM Ethics and Management. It's one of their subjects. It has become an issue. Before the ethics in the business was make money. But now it's not enough. Because you may make money. But then if you were harming the environment, harming the local people, where you get their raw products, selling carpets that are made by children who are being mistreated and they're underage workers. They're being deprived of the opportunity to become developed members of society. Then your products may not be sold in the market. So now people have to be aware of ethical concerns. So even in business, ethics is an important thing. So in the Bhagavad Gita also tells us about karma. And I had a little show. I picked up the Internet. It's not my show, but if I can find it, I'll show it to you later. In the meantime, if you have any questions? Can you turn on these lights for a while? A few minutes for questions.
You said that there is life and life means there is a feeling, there is a desire.
Am I right?
Thinking, feeling and willing.
Yeah.
This plant is also having a life, but it doesn't desire anything.
If you just said no feeling. You being a student in Calcutta, when Jagdish Chandra Bose did a scientific experiment in this city which was a breakthrough that proved that plants have consciousness. He played music. He put special electrical sensors like ECG type brain scan on the plants and showed that by hitting the plant by playing different music, that actually the plants responded differently. You know that they show that plants grow differently depending what kind of music you play to them.
Yeah, that's true.
Have you ever seen a sunflower? Have you ever seen a sunflower?
Yes.
It responds to the sun.
So that means it has a desire. It wants to see the sun, it wants to get the sunlight. It means it's a very undeveloped desire, but it has feeling. And obviously it has some kind of concept. Maybe it's very, very, very undeveloped. But the fact that it can respond to the sun. There are some plants that are catching these fly catchers, this insect eating carnivorous plants. A little fly goes on, it closes. So those are very active plants. Plants. There's this. They have got male and female forward some of the plants and the bees have to go from the one flower, take the pollen and the honey and go to another flower. And then if they touch the other flower, then only there'll be the mango fruit. Because we had bees in Nayapur and they will pay us thousands of rupees if we bring our bees to the mango orchard. So the plants are the lowest level of the immovable objects are the lowest level on the hierarchy of living entities. That's why we can eat plants. Because plants are not so much conscious. If you kill a plant, it's not going to be as conscious as if you kill an animal. You ever drive in the morning at the airport by this. I don't even know what you call that place behind Shelda where they're killing the pigs. You hear the Chinese people or whoever they are that kills the pigs there. The pigs are screaming in the morning. Chi chi, Chi chi. So what's that sound? They said they're squandering the pig. They don't want to die. Or a plant. That's why we can eat plants. That's why it's not so conscious. Even then. We eat the fruit of the plant, we eat the grain which is already when the plant is dead. So we're not really causing any pain to. The plants don't eat roots. Because they say, well, the roots still alive, but.
Some of the plants roots are also eaten. Roots are also eaten like carrots.
We eat roots. But I mean, I understand the chains. They don't eat roots. But that's no.
But the life in plants was discovered just some of the centuries ago, before that they were.
This is written in Bhagavad Gita that plants have life thousands and thousands of years ago, over 5,000 years ago, whenever beyond Sadeva wrote, he says plants have consciousness. And only 100 years ago we decided. So which is the oldest science now?
What is the science that I considered?
But best question.
When we see a.
Film star or someone like that, we get attracted.
When we see a sanyasi, why don't we get attracted? We have to have more film stars become sanyasis. It depends on your reference. Some people get attracted because of externals. What does the person look like? Are they very beautiful, very handsome, they're very muscular, very. Well, physically voluptuous, lady or something? Whatever the kind of. Maybe those things are what we are looking at. Some people are more concerned, what does the person think about knowing the person not for what they look like, but for what they say, what they understand. So when somebody learns to see beyond the superficials and look to what a person stands for, what sacrifices they've made in life, what they believe in, how they're living, what they believe, then someone might be attracted to that. You might see someone and not be attracted. And you hear, well, that person's a Olympic runner, won gold medals, but they think, wow, that skinny person, you know, it's actually a very great personality. Run a marathon, record time. So we learn to appreciate people not only for what they look like. I think generally people are attracted to movie stars because of what they see on the screen and how the directors present them. But sometimes they're movie stars, but we're.
Just people, you know, we're not.
Like what you see on the screen is those are the characters of the writers and the screenplayers.
So.
But that's what we see. And then they're famous. And whatever we tend to get exposed to, we want to see that. We want to know. Like if you read about Krishna and then after a while you develop some desire to know Krishna. This night, George Harrison, he read a lot about Krishna, he heard a lot about Krishna and then he wrote that song, My Sweet Lord, where he said, I want to know you getting to know you. I want to see you. I want to touch you.
So.
Different people will have different desires depending on how they develop their consciousness or as you develop them. In yoga, you may be more desirous to get to know other yogis who have passed the same kind of trials that you have to pass in your life. You'd like to get their experience, their knowledge to help you to cross over the same kind of bridges and obstacles. And when you get at a certain stage in your spiritual development where you want that kind of association, then sannyasis might be more attractive to you than a movie star. And it all depends where our head is at. But if you had a movie star preaching, I thought it was good. You know, Malini, she chants Hare Krishna. A lot of entertainers who do chant, but not as many as should. There's a few around the world in our restaurant in Los Angeles, whenever a new movie star comes and visits. Because we're on the border of Los Angeles and Culver City. In Culver City and Hollywood are the two places where the movies are made. So all the time into our vegetarian restaurant and gift shop, you get movie stars.
Hunter.
We had Madonna coming in. She's called Esther. But before it was Madonna, we had all kinds of movies that are coming. Just recently, someone who won the best Perform Actress award, not mogul, Oscar award, she came to our gift shop and our restaurant. So they got a picture of her, sat around the world. Steven Spielberg, he bought a Bhagavad Gita.
From Mandalorian, New Orleans.
Maybe that Bhagavad Gita influence you'll see in some of his films, I don't know. One more question.
But why so many people are attracted.
To this ideology.
And why so many people are.
Communists? Don't believe in God. Why people are attracted to them? I think communism, this economic theory, they don't intend to be or pretend or pretend to be a religion or anything. Although maybe for some people it becomes like that. They say that it's an economic formula. Whether it's a successful formula in today's world are not that you can study or say, but they promise equality. Actually, Caitanya Mahaprabhu brought what he presented, that he's a real communist from a spiritual point of view. Spiritual communism. Because he said all living entities are equal, see? But people don't know. I even heard One of the CPM MLAs speak at Mauvadweem, one of our functions. And he said that Lord Chaitanya was a communist. So I guess that's why Chaitanya. But he's not an atheistic communist. He's a theistic. I don't know, he's just Mao or some of the communists have become against the organized religions. But whether it's really necessary for a communist to be an atheist. That's just how Lenin and Stalin and Mao they send that religion, the opium of the people and things like that. Because they were fighting against organized religion. That was very powerful. But like in India we don't have that kind of organized religion. Hindus have that practice and different. We practice at least the Hindu, the Sanatana Dharma, we're trained to practice individually in our homes. We started that. You have to like if you're in a. To belong to a church in the west you had to go to that church and not to any other church in another denomination. It's very, very sectarian. But then like people go to Janghasta, maybe they visit so many temples. There's different kinds of religions apply in different ways. So maybe the religions that the original communists were dealing with they felt that this was a type of deviation for them. People can just. But the reality is that just by economics people aren't also happy. Neither they were happy in Russia, neither they're happy in China now. Even the biggest communist former communist countries have taken to capitalism now. And we're not pro capitalist either. We believe that in a multi system.
Society.
And the problem with capitalism is the workers don't have the proper guarantees. It's not as much social guarantee where communism everybody is guaranteed. But then nobody's allowed to get rich. But then everybody wants to be rich. So then all the communists officers become rich. This is another big topic. I don't know. That's not my. Today was spirit yoga for the 21st century. But people do become attracted to economic solutions to the world problems. I think we're all looking for solutions to the world problem when communism holds that kind of a promise. And maybe they have a solution. But it's not the only type of communism. The problem is one of our preachers, the Turkgram, Swami Maharaj. We have this book that maybe they have it on the book table. Spiritual communism. So he had this book and he started distributing it in South Korea. But South Korea is at war with North Korea, who's communist and they're dead against the communists. So what happens is when he was distributing this book, he thought this is a good book to distribute in Korea. The government got a complaint that there's some Sannyasi distributing a book about communism. And he was immediately arrested and deported. And for so many years Krishna Kant's they thought that we're a communist movement. Especially because we live in communal. The Sannyasis and Brahmacharis. We live in communal situations. I think even in Singapore they may think that we're communists. Only here in Bengal they think because the first devotees were from the west, that it's American. Everywhere else they think we're happiness.
So.
People can become also many people all over the world are becoming attracted to Ka consciousness because they see it as a solution to the world's problems. More of a complete solution involving economics.
And.
Human existence and living existence, ecology. Any other question.
Being in my mind?
Sometimes I feel that something is missing in my life. What I can find today. What is the missing thing in my life. That's exactly what I felt. I thought I got everything I got in the best university from a very young age. This gets tougher in my class. All the different things I thought everything is what I should want. But I wasn't feeling happy. I was feeling something was missing. Then I realized that I didn't know who I was. Who am I? We don't know who we are and how we can be happy. Probably if you think you're the automobile, but you're actually the driver in the automobile. You put the petrol in the automobile. But the driver has to eat the samosas and the rice and dal. So we're starving for that spiritual energy and that spiritual environment. And we're just tuning our body. The body may be quite happy, but we're as the actual person that's making the body just a machine. It's kind of a virtual reality. And that's what we're missing. We're missing the real spiritual. We have our own level of happiness which is beyond the bodily. Sensual happiness. Sensual happiness has a beginning and an end. And the same senses that give us happiness also give us distress. It's not a one sided thing, it's a two sided sword. Today I feel very happy. I ate something. Tomorrow I got a stomach ache and I'm vomiting. And if you didn't still feeling missing, then come back to me and we'll discuss Hare Krishna. Thank you very much.
