Transcript of a workshop on congregational preaching and development within the Krishna consciousness movement. Speakers (including Savo Sarub Das and several others) discuss leadership transition, engaging youth and children (Sunday school, youth clubs), empowering congregational members (including women) to take responsibility and preach, organizational structures (sector/chakra system), outreach/grassroots cultivation, and friendship/service as spiritual practice. The content mixes practical examples, regional reports, and encouragement for delegation and long-term cultivation.
Sam Range congregational to have the lecture of congregational vision. So we interview the third leaders from around the world and we start and the theme about leadership holiness the type of work that is being done to nurture you Surround my temples. The various educational programs are keys to the future success of our movement. While making navigational development at top priorities will not be able to take full advantage of the mercy that Lord Shaitan is giving us.
Next.
Some homage to remain for great asthma. We have to be proactive. We have to think about the future. The only way to ensure the future of our capital is to make sure that the congregation and their children are engaged. The children become a cat committed to the temple. When they grow up they can become the new leader for the project. Ambar is the rule Congregation of love in his life of leaves without grooming the children of the congregation devoted who are the future of our movement. So initiatives like Sunday school and youth love are very much Even though in the love and progress.
Which.
Another reason why we need to develop our congregations is for our children. My children will end up making friends and associated with people who are non devotees of Christian. We need to have schools for devotees and for congregational members who have children with us. We talk about congregation much improved the youth factor. We can't leave them out. Many of our congregational members have all grown and graduated background that is something that humanogis are attracted to. Younger people must also see stability in the Miyasta Asha all that leadership and the future. I am boldly to take up leadership roles and Bhakti Miksha Mahatra Congregational development is an opportunity for younger devotees creators men, women, youth and new leaders in congregational field. I met in Middle east majority they have it organized there. For every clean five they have a sector leader. Sanskrit is called upa chakra and very three centers that are circling all the chakra. For every three chakra sigma chakra is over about 12 groups. Maha chakra is over 36 groups. 25, 36. 36 groups means maybe 400 people. 12 groups may be 120. One hundred and fifty devotees. That's a lot more responsibility than any of our temple residents. Grace Walter so I go in one family. The husband was with Maha Chakra over 400 people. And his wife goes to the Chakra save us over 150 people. So in addition to taking care of her two children, her husband, her house chores. She was also overseeing the spiritual progress of 150 devotees. Of course we'll find in the holidays were being supervised by sector leaders group leaders and charts Wasn't like a golf fell on her head. But she was such a responsible lawyer. She could go solve problems, answer questions. I don't know anywhere else in this farm where it's so easy for women and youth to get the amendments and the possibility of taking the responsibility. See that mirror GBC Dina Sharana in Germany, 50 to 60% of the congregation. It's natural that they came more active role taking responsibility. If we were thinking just to try to organize everything by ourselves, then we will be limited in how we can spread Krishna consciousness. If we learn to delegate the responsibility, then the things will rise up to the level of responsibility and will also encourage others to rise up. Then things can understand very rapidly. How I saw me see this work.
On this topic there was no.
So you speak Russian Include on different levels of preaching that there are three stages. First stage is what Abhinav always second stage.
Here.
Here also let you know how many of you are already involved in congregation. How many are members of the.
How.
Many are viewers live around coming in here like for the first time. I just want to know about foundational development. We had about 800 for the first time. About 12 are members of the and others. So that's what we're going to cover. Some things I already know to the people who are practicing. Some things are for the new people. So we say that when we do outreach programs, Namahatas festivals.
That we meet.
People, we meet people. It's our first contact. Some people come for the first time, just like some of you are here for the first time. So this is something important like and here I'd like to introduce you Savo Sarub Das. He's our general manager for the congregational development industry. We have a secretary from Klass still in South America doing seminars seems so far away that are interested to get more and more information about the foundational development. It's something that's very exciting, I think. When you go on to student books. Some days you student many books, some days you student the best books. When you give a book out, get some kind of result, some kind of foundation development. It's hard to know what are the results. You meet someone, you talk to them, even when you studied a book. If you meet a friendly person, if you meet a favorable person, if you can give their name, give them an invitation, invite them to come to some program. That's a step, that's a contact. When you do the outreach program, working in contact so that you can cultivate them into becoming devotees and train them attended. This is a great Word contact. Use those to get someone contact. Then you have to give contact whichever way you want to call it. Different things. I wish to those that Chandra Moli Maharaj is not still going around different types of different place in the world. Some places will be little people and making their first contacts. Immediately we start to cultivate them right get them more interested, answer their questions. So when they reach a certain stage they get convinced that this is for me, this is what I have to do. This is what I was looking for. That means drop a bunch of letters. So today about college preaching. When you preach to college students, don't want to force them that they should shave their hair, they should live in a ashram. They rather want to give them some service that they find it easy to do. If they don't type in let them do tidy practitioners if they know cooking or whatever. So I just let them do what comes natural. So that kind of reasonable development environment. We want the people that come contact with devotees. They shouldn't always be children. They shouldn't make amazing outlets. If you don't shave up your hair, if you don't move in the temple.
You ain't plan.
Because you want to know what their situation is. You want to understand how they can best serve Bishop. Some of these married, has kids as a family, has responsibility. They let alone where you cannot maintain them families in our temple it may not be appropriate to tell them that they have to live in the temple. Our temple has facility communicating. So like this, you want to verse so you can hear the person get to know what is it they want to light. How can you engage that? How can you make Krishna consciousness interesting? So we're trying to. Every time we make a contact, every time we get there, we come to a program. Every time they bring a further interest. This is a result of preaching. It's a tangible result bringing people closer and closer to Krishna. So we want to share from His.
Holiness.
His realizations and experiences.
Mario it Hare Krishna. I had no idea I was going to speak in my day. Yes I am. But I've always been from the beginning since this Holy spirit of preaching back in the 1990s when we self all men. I was thinking that this is one of the most ingenious ways to spread Krishna consciousness in America and of course throughout the world. Specifically in places where there is now a lot of emphasis on and Hawaii. I traveled to Europe, mostly Western Europe, Galatians, Italy, Italy, sometimes Denmark. And I see where mostly persons that are being developed by people who have responsibilities in the secular World whose family are not.
Very few.
No, not that many, but very few persons are coming in from JM Brahmacharya.
Brahmacharya.
People who are somehow well contacted by our devotees who put this tradition into various other programs or people who live in a community and who have lifestyles centered around a certain family responsibility relationship.
So this is.
This preaching is practically the most important thing I think as developing in the world today. We're seeing the results each year. More and more groups are developing. More and more people coming forward take up the champion and we are understanding program and reaching. But what it takes I think is a reassessment of commitment in order to make it work. Because it's a process of cultivation. It's a process of handling responsibility. Once one starts to develop these programs, where I see there is.
Some.
Where we say lack is there too much emphasis on the responsibility of temple devotees to take part in these programs and being all in all for the congregation. The most important thing as far as program developing and expanding is empowering people within the congregation to take on responsibilities. So they also become leaders on the same level as those who are actually full time devotees. We see that especially I see my own experiences in areas like Chicago, which is my base. We do have some programs regulated on the undergrad. We have one very quite qualified congregational members named as Sabudi Krishna. And he's developed this congregational preaching program as his focus, his spiritual master service. And he's good and he's expert, he knows how to do it. And because of that so many people are being inspired by him. And that's what it takes. It takes someone through the. Who is a congregation member, who lives within the congregation, who knows the lifestyle of the people that they introduce you to and to present those well beings in Krishna consciousness in such a way that he systematically can gradually come on to the next manual. Sometimes where I see where it's a little weak is where there is no one and genuity. So programs going on in the temple, they test for me. And now the media program. We're not going to make changes after a few weeks, a few months. People within the groups come and go. Groups are not steadying. People are not really making investment. So I think someone who is connected to the temple and someone who is also a member of the congregation who can continue to get magic from most sources is to develop that creature program for the community. So I think as devotees, it's important to start to empower people within the community to take on that responsibility to become creatures within their own areas. And that takes an ongoing community to see who has that interest, who has that potential, who has that propensity, who has that desire. And when you find a strong person who is a community member and also somebody very resonated with heaven, you have wonderful results. Tremendous results inspire so many. So my service within these programs is becoming a visitor program from time to time and not always here to constantly go to the same programs all the time, but to allow for those creatures into the community to take responsible set believe the programs and to develop the programs on their own. Where it's weak is where it's strong. Too much temple based or too little temple based. There has to be a nice balance between temple and the this is something my observation when I go almost far in my preaching size, the importance of changing, I always focus on that as the way I go the Samh that I inspire people to seriously take up your chin and all the ways of the world and emphasize that if you want to learn Srila Prabhupada's books, if you want to become more and more involved in Krishna consciousness, you have to change this will later learn and you have to emphasize that change that you're doing to be part of your life. So I constantly always try to emphasize the importance of changing. And the realization that comes by way of philosophical discussions that we develop are some very much situated on.
The more.
We develop the champion, the more we are consciousness that we understand deeper and deeper what Srila God has been saying in these books. And as people develop interest in the philosophy, then they can see and they can see in the classes, in the discussions how the philosophy of philosophy can apply to their life and solve their problems and be a very integral part of their life. Then they come more and more enthusiastically. So my feeling is I just want to do as much as I can in whatever area because I'm traveling. I plan to spend more time in Chicago this year to help develop the programs where you're going on trying to inspire others to take up the lead. And you see Krishna consciousness works in such a way is that when you are whatever you emphasize in Krishna narcissism, whether it's chanting, your reading, your relationships with the devotees, whatever you're doing, we say quality time, emphasis, concentration on that it grows, it works. And especially with congregational preaching, because it has such a potential that has such a potential we see even in the light of the world what will he travel into South India. He's chanting the holy names of the Lord and everybody who came in contact with him Also started ch. And then after they he. Those people that they were checking because of him, they contacted other nations and they started to change. Those persons that were ch because of that contact also met other persons when they started to change. And so in this way, it just kept spreading and spreading and spreading. Therefore, millions of people were chanting over the names of the world. So the same way coloration has such a power of potential because in each person can be an instrument to inspire others. So this is a very, very important program. This only exactly emerges all the intricacies of how the program develops and expands. In my living perspective, I have seen learners. It works. It gives empowerment, it gives enthusiasm, a big confidence. It allows people to take part in Christian consciousness even while they're living in the career and taking care of families and responsibilities. So it's very, very important. Sometimes we say our temples are a little weak. A lot of times our temples are worthy because we fail to empower to include the congregation. As they can offer so much in way of services. And at the same time they can also be preachers within their own buildings.
This is.
Seeing there's a generation coming all over you who are growing up in Krishna consciousness whose parents may have some connection with our new. They also are living in Christ. So there's a world where they all take part in this. Youth clubs, Sunday schools, also events which allow them to engage in various activities that are centered in our Christian consciousness. Like Bucky Mark's mommy. Last year he was traveling all over America during the rocky Atria season. He was going to every rocky island under the reliance of social and some nature activities at the same time. They were lunch consciousness.
And from that.
From that I saw the results as one girl who was. Her father was a devotee in Chicago. And she wasn't so much involved with this driver the action. And after that whole era was over a couple months she came back. She was so enthusiastic. She wanted to do more service. She got connected with some other things that were also involved. Now they're becoming more and more involved. So in that sense of powerful. But it takes. It takes committed devotees to work on these programs and just use our intelligence and use our abilities to see how we can empower and spread these programs. So I thank you, Maharaj, for being such a powerful force in developing this Lord, what's the word? Desire in the sense that it is the way to expand Krishna. Very, very important. It has the potential to capture the whole world. Okay, thank you very.
Much.
SA.
Congregational Development Journal WORKER his work. And by the day she learned how to speak. And then she learned the lodis in this way she was mostly converted from her because she got converted to Shengali.
Thank you so much for coming all these devotees. I wish to extend my. I wish to extend my gratitude, appreciation. This issue of youth is actually a critical issue. Last year His Holiness Jay Eta Maharaj spoke to this issue very powerfully. And she revolved on the issue. Maharaj said I thought was a very poignant remark, very candid remark. He said that for the youth to come up in Islam, it's necessary for the leaders to step down. Now, Moharat is a long time GBC member and he's someone who is revered and respected in all circles of our society. And for him to make such a stark remark about the importance of you and giving you the opportunity to be engaged in leadership roles I think sets precedence for the future. Our leaders are growing older. Our movement is now 40 years old. This is one of the themes of our festival this year. It's the 40th anniversary of Uskhan. And most of us in this room, I think are looking around. I think we're about all the same age, late 20s, 30s, mid-30s. So we're considered to be the second generation. Some of us are already producing children. Third generation. What is our goal? So when we speak about youth, we're not just speaking about group children or those children born from Shunumbo class born children. Actually in our movement, those of us who are middle age, so to speak, 35 and under May be also considered to be you. Despite in Bengal, of course, 16 is considered over the hill practically. So we touched on this issue of you in our latest issue of the Congregational Development Journal. We devoted a whole issue to some of the programs there capturing the youth's attention. You can see on the COVID of this magazine we have the Bakugasena. And this group was actually born out of an activist movement in London in the early 90s. The Bacidianto Manor was being threatened by the government. Government wanted to close the manor. And a group of local devotees, congregational members and also Temple Degrees young boys started up a mass campaign to keep the manor open. And they used techniques public demonstration that was similar to the ones that Mahapuko such as the Nahu used against Charakazi. And this was a very, very popular movement. It seems that we talked about the Varma husband of leaders. They didn't necessarily stray out of a vision to maintain the front of the center. The scene is something that was kind of brought about on an emergency basis. The government wanted to close the banner and they reacted. But this kind of ascent of movement, we can call it a movement, it's become sort of a subculture, at least in London, whereby young people can come together and practice Mishna consciousness. An environment that is very supportive, very enlightening and very, very popular. Nowadays we're seeing that the popularity of our movement in many, many countries is increasing. And this is for us a very good indication because the youth are of course attracted by so many media images. I mean, I know growing up in America, tv, radio, video, so many different kinds of media input. It's just a big part of life. And nowadays Even more so MP3s and Internet, children are very used to seeing images, very, very fast images. So the Pakistana and other youth groups, such as the groups in Pune and in Chopati Monserrat Dalkade, they're catering to a different generation of devotees with a different cultural background. So this youth issue among one of the articles was submitted by Ms. Rotenberg about teaching children to preach. As Aravinda said earlier, women, you and other groups of people that have traditionally not had access to leadership roles, to roles where they were out in front in congregation of preaching. This issue of so called minority is somewhat nullified. As Gumars indicated, 60% of the congregation is seen now. And most of these women have children. And as we can see in the Middle east, of course, all of you know her Grace Media marketing. She and her husband as a team collaborated and created a whole network of devotees in the Middle east from scratch around us. But in this article I wanted to focus on giving children the training to be able to engage themselves in preaching and also to identify as devotees. Because nowadays we're here even in Bengal, which is a very pious country, a very pious part of India, the children, if they weren't taken off to school, if they were looking their teeth, this is India. So I can't imagine how it is in western countries, what kind of treatment some children undergo as they express themselves as devotees. But in this article I wrote about one young boy who preached with us in our morning program and you probably have seen just after Mobile Agathi, after the announcements, the campus preaching devotees and myself, we engaged the guests in chanting one round in Hare Krishna. And it looks like an easy thing to do, but in fact it really isn't. Mostly are not initially enthusiastic about chanting. We have to do a lot of coasting and begging and sombranding even to take at the end. But the children, actually that's something that encouraged me to do out of these Big groups of people. There would probably be a dozen, 12, 15 or so children. We have them sit separately and I need to detect you vibrational. And from my experience, it's absolutely stunning not only how quickly the children take out chanting Hare Yishto, but how enthusiastic they are about it. And sometimes at the end of the program, the children will ask me, I'd like to hey, the mala and the malas are five rupees. So I say, okay, bring me and show me your parents grow your parents. And I'll approach the parents and I'll say, this is a very, very unusual, special child. Your child actually wants to chant Hare Krishna. Your child is actually very, very intricate, conscious. This is no ordinary thing. And the parents will feel a little bit proud. And I'll say to them, if you take up chanting Radameshram, your whole family takes the chanting radius show. Then you will see such wonderful results. And at this point, sometimes the mother father cares both. Maybe the father isn't so grateful or maybe the mother, but one will say, well, she has dance class and she has painting class and art class. I know if I buy her not she won't chant anyway. So we're hearing this from the parents the child is sharing with. The meanwhile child is very eager to chant. So that's when I start kind of pushing a little. This is a very. This is a very wonderful opportunity. You care for your child so much. You're providing clothing and food and nice schools for your child, but you're not dragged about your child's actual eternal life. It's sometimes we're able to persuade the family to take to the chanticardian shown in that way. But the main focus of this article was to discuss the potentiality of children to preach because they can preach in our congregational movement. One doesn't have to be extremely learned in shastra, although that's definitely a move, especially a benefit. But the main thrust of congregational preaching is sharing. So if one is in Krishna consciousness for one week, one will certainly have realizations to share. If one is in Krishna consciousness for one year, of course their realization is the depth of realizations will increase. But the point is, is that Mahavu's order is that everyone distributes a sh Consciousness. And absolutely everyone is capable of doing so on a small scale, that is with among family and friends or in a larger scale. As you can see, our very and also so many of our leaders have been done reaching to thousands of people. We don't even we can't count on anymore. But the point is that everyone is capable of preaching. It doesn't require that one memorize all the Shobas and Bhagavad Gita, but just that one has the conviction and a little bit of faith that ka consciousness is so wonderful and it is practicable, practicable by everyone we can see in our own lives. So this issue of you bringing new, the new so called new generation to the forefront is something that I think we're just starting to explore. So in our local yatras, what we can do to foster this issue is to start dialogue with our children. Many of you are not with many of you actually think about the ways in which you're engaging your children in Christian consciousness. Is it a passive way? Come on, let's go to the temple. You do your hand dumb dial in my day. Or are we actively engaging in ascending peace? Do we have activities especially for children? Or our children just kind of left to tackle their mother, father, feel kind of bored and out of place. These are the dynamics that we have to consider in case about you. Constant engagement in Krishna consciousness is the only way in which one can make advancement, in which one can really taste the nectar. So we should be very, very conscious of the role of our children. And I know that issues like these, the youth of iskcon not only help us understand the pervasiveness of youth and what they're doing, they're doing some very dynamic things. But we can help our children see these dots. This is beautiful, just beautiful glowing pictures of young people. You know, in America we have what's called ntd. I know NTD is a national nowadays, but you see young people 17 to 19, they just look at their taking troubles, managing them, involved in so many insectivities and they just look so miserable. But looking at the shining, beautiful glowing faces of our swarm devotees, they're really such a good example for everyone. For us, they're a little bit older now and amongst themselves to inspire them youth, the youth have to inspire themselves to keep going and from the top, that is the leaders and those who are in positions of authority. You have to encourage the youth to come up, give them the opportunity to shine, give them the opportunity to share their talents because their talents are abundant. So this issue of our journals available at the table and we hope that you please take a look. Also on our website we have several articles about youth reaching. One is about authority and the possible generation gap between the leaders now and those of us who will come into power. Those youth members who are coming into positions of power. It's a very, very interesting and very, very deep subject. So leaders of ministry want to facilitate not only dialogue, but we want to take practical action too in helping devotees motivate you and also helping you come into the fold more and more. So I'll conclude here, but I want to thank you again all for coming and I'm sure many of you know there's a little love for our candles. We have a candle set up the combination of candle in them just near the big blue bus. You've probably seen the institute in the big blue bus. We're right next door to that bus. It will be open during the day and we hope that you come by, we get to meet you, we have our materials there. Most of all, we just want to get in contact who's out there, who who is among the congregation. We can't yet quite identify who all of us are. So we invite you all to come and to continue coming to these presentations. And we hope you have a wonderful, wonderful festival.
You are Money Relationships About Friendship Another great election like Srila Prabhupada Everybody is looking for a friend. Man is looking for a man. Man is looking for a woman. Woman is looking for a man. Everybody's looking for friends. Actually Chris Shy is the best friend. He's the friend that we're all looking for.
But.
So when people are looking for friendship in the material world, we know that friendship is based on sense gratification. Please gratify that I stretch yours. You give me sense gratification. I can do some to actually get grants. Transcendental bliss Transcendental experiences engagement for Krishna service. This is a much higher loving relationship here. I saw this in loving relationships. Let's see what some of our devotees have to say. Participants establish unclosed vibe of friendship via rendering service together either at the temple or the local mission center. During various festivals, members of these groups offer their services co parenting cooperation with local authorities. There are many centers for which are successfully managed by the combination. Once the congregational members become close friends of the d spiritual body and as you guide way amongst themselves to fulfill each other's spiritual and material needs. Facetime should the problematic teachings of simple living and high thinking. Simplicity of lifestyle follows naturally from strong connections to Krishna and his services established over time. So friendship is another aspect of congregational how many of you have friends? Hope so people that are able to make friends. That's one of the better ways of making devotees make someone your friend then a friend. If they tell that this is something good, generally they believe it more you have to do it of course. Gradually this will bring the people closer and closer. I know one person here in the room who has made many friends and brought many people to Ka Consciousness. Not all of you, many grihastas. Many different devotees. He and his wife are a powerful king. His name is. I got many congregation for who had told me that they felt the Shai Paramahanda was a friend. Maya Prabila was helping them. His husband and my team were working together. And he's been assigned as the congregational leader for the country of creation. So he asked him of his own experience. It probably good that we can share them with you. So you get an idea different countries what it's like to spread Ka consciousness. The challenges, the rewards, the experiences, memory that you own idea and realizations about what's needed to be Ka conscious and spread it to the congregation of love.
My English I would like to share some realization. I started this program back. I was actually still that go and have the RO. But in 1996 we started the bacteria program in Croatia.
So we succulent.
So in this time I was in this. I was immunization to go out. Actually I was. I become a congregation of members to attend their office. So I was spending about. Maybe I can try to. I could try to be a member of Bhagturiksha Jerusalem, another program. Actually at the beginning I was really. I didn't have real knowledge all information about motivation of Vishnu central devotees. But honestly I have one meditation. My experience was that many people who come out of the temple after a.
While.
Just disappear or they don't have any time anymore. Such close relationship with devotees in the temple or between other devotees and on these days that was such a situation. So I was thinking when I come up from the temple.
If I. If I will let.
If I don't have the time. If I don't have enough time to go every day. I'm very very old temple. Or maybe I should lose my relationship with other devotees or even do Seva Krishna and spiritual master. So I was trying. I started to go calculation groups and very soon I become a leader. And in the field there was many groups. But after all this there was some. There is some devotees who tried to be leader. And after a while I just gave up service for that session was.
If.
We have a service, it's not enough in our spiritual life we must have a friend. We must have some close relationship between each other. And I also remember that Shah would give this example that only if we are united, if we are together that we can survive. Because in the material world, even if we don't have such a close relationship, we have. Even if you don't have such a close relationship, you have to go every.
Day in the work.
You have to relate to somehow or another with other people. And if you are not serious enough in a spiritual life and have close relationship with each other, it will be very difficult to stay conscious. So the life is talking about close relationship. That means we have to take care of our spiritual life, but we take care of others. Because when we come to the temple or when we come to the spiritual life, we respond. Then there was always some other devotees. I mean, this has been devoted to give us knowledge about Krishna consciousness. If somebody give us knowledge, that means that this person gave us over his energy, give us his time. That means he sacrificed his time to help us in spiritual life. So if we have such care, our obligations actually to give the same things to other people. I mean, many of us, especially if you are in a temple when you have such a experience than maybe for example, you are sick and someone came to you and he asked you what's going on? Maybe it doesn't look so good in you got an answer. Oh, that's nice. This is beautiful. This is your garden. And this the alternative. Most probably he was thinking, oh, and I saw learned scholar and I'm he, you know, he tried to explain, this is your gar. You have to suffer. You not only have to suffer, but you have to. You have to be tolerant about this, you know, just go away. You have such experience, no?
Yes.
Almost 90% of people have such experience.
Why?
Because we need, of course, such a person. Maybe didn't ask.
