20040401 || Caitanya-caritāmṛta Class (Ādi 1.62) on Vyāsa-pūjā Day || Śrī Māyāpur, India

Lecture (Caitanya-caritāmṛta class) by Jaya/Jaipadah Swami focused on the guru’s duty to care for devotees, using a Srimad Bhagavatam verse and Bhaktivedanta Swami (Prabhupada) purports as the doctrinal basis. The speaker gives multiple examples of Prabhupada’s compassionate activity (initiatives, temple programs, counseling) and discusses practical challenges in modern pastoral care—delegation, communication (email overload), temple management, and building the Mayapur big temple—while urging devotees to help one another.
Sa saints are my heart and only I know their hearts. They do not know anyone but me and therefore I do not recognize anyone besides them as mine. Report this is the purport from the Chitanya Namita. It's a different purport in the Bhagavatam. I'm using this because this slok was quoted in Chitten and Jana Webinar. This verse appears in Srimad Bhagavatam 9468 in connection with a misunderstanding between Darvasa Muni and Maharaj Ambharish. As a result of this misunderstanding, Javasamuni trying to kill the king when the Sudarshana Chakra, the celebrated weapon of Godhead, appeared on the scene for the devoted king's protection. When the Sudarshan Chakra attacked the Vasamuni, he fled in fear of the weapon and sought shelter from all the great demigods in heaven. Not one of them was able to protect him and therefore Darvasa Muni prayed to Lord Vishnu for forgiveness. Lord Vishnu advised him, however, that if he wanted forgiveness, he had to get it from Maharaj Avarish, not from him. In this connection Lord Vishnu spoke this version. The Lord, being full and free from problems, can wholeheartedly care for his devotees. His concern is how to elevate and protect all those who have taken shelter at his feet. The same responsibility is also entrusted to the spiritual Master. The bona fide spiritual master's concern is how the devotees who have surrendered to him as a representative of the Lord may make progress in devotional service. The supreme Personality of Godhead is always mindful of the devotees who fully engage in cultivating knowledge of him having taken shelter at his lotus feet. Thus ends the Bhaktivedanta Swami translation purport. This is From Adi Lila 1st chapter 60, 2nd verse Srimad Bhagavatam verse 9th canto 4th chapter 68 text. This verse especially we chose it today because the Lord he states that he wholeheartedly cares for his devotees. The Lord is free from all problems. If somebody has a problem, it's difficult for them to fully take care of because they take care of their problem first, then they take care of other people's problems. Since Lord Krishna has no problem, he can take care of everybody else's problems also since he is unlimited, he can do that unlimitedly. But here in this verse it also Prabhupada explains in the Purport the same responsibility is also entrusted to the spiritual master. The spiritual master is also trying to care for the devotees. Especially he wants to see how devotees can progress in devotional service. Those devotees that have surrendered to the spiritual master as a representative of devotees that he is personally responsible and concerned that they make progress. We saw that his divine grace he lays in Bhaktivedanta Swami. He was always concerned about how his followers would advance in Ka consciousness, how they would get back to Ka. So he made different programs like the daily temple program, like different devotional services. He wrote his books, he built my empire, Vrindavan Dhams temples and so many other things. All considering what is needed for his disciples. His followers today were taking shelter of him to give back to Ka. He instituted the Guru Parampara system, continued it ordering his followers to also be gurus and take up the responsibility on his behalf. Sometimes we will see Prabhupada praying for a disciple who was placed is directed. Even we heard that in New York in 1967 there was a Bhakta kind of a visitor would come to the temple frequently. So it was known as like a Bhakta any and somehow because he was still not fully practicing, he became depressed because of some intoxication or something. For some reason he stopped coming. And the devotees heard that he couldn't give up his bad habits. He was feeling frustrated. He wanted to be at devotee. But then somehow he committed suicide. In his frustration. The Prabhupada one day asked where is this Bhakta, Bhakta Abi? And they said, well, he's. Why would I have seen him for us how many days they told him what happened. He said, actually Prabhupada said let's pray for him. And you pray Krishna, where is his Bhakti? Any now where has he gone? We wander in the forest. We beat our head against the trees and the rocks. Where is our dear Bhakti? Please have mercy on him that he can take birth in the family of the devotees. The Prabhupada was crying for this visitor, not taking initiation. This came a few times, Prabhupada said, We felt. We felt this devoting Somehow we cleaned him fully into devotional service. Krishna sent him to us and we felt so that's how compassionate Srila Bhavn was. I was thinking that so Prabhupada sent me a number of devotees so I was to care for. And past few years I was drunk as I was feeling since 1997 that as a Prabhupada disciple my concern it should not be only whatever my individual responsibilities are. But I have to also seek for the whole iskcon to some degree welfare Especially as a gbc. See my disciple. So then for many Years since then, since 97, I stepped up a program for trying to care for any devotees that came to me. But then in the meantime, there were many other disciples who took shelter of me, surrender to me. They are feeling the lack that I'm not taking enough care for them. And that was this last Janmastani, Prabhupada Bhuja. Then I had to start to balance things. My services to Mayapur, to India, to my zone, to my disciples, and to all the devotees otherwise depending on me or looking to me for any help. I realized that Prabhupada had given a practical system for caring for devotees. In those days, all the devotees, most of them lived in the temples. So the temple presidents and temple leaders and few Sannyasis and TBCs, they were mainly taking care of the devotees on behalf of Prabhupada. And then if there was some emergency, we would always write a snail nail to Prabhupada. In those days there was no email. And then eventually you get a reply after a few weeks or months, whenever Brahman visited. And sometimes people could see him if it was an emergency. A few of the more days they would go wherever Prabhupada was chasing around, which he didn't always appreciate. So I think we're trying also that all the bodies, they're either in a temple or they're in a Namhatra or a Bhakti Riksha or a counselor group, or they're helped by senior devotees. As you can imagine, if everybody came to me at one time and all wanted a question, answer. Like yesterday somebody made a big thing say I have to send a guru. I've had this question for one year is vitally important. Stop everything. Okay? Then he wanted to know Ganesha, you know, some question about his Brahmin trip, which he could have found out from any senior devotee, any other senior Brahmin. But if time permitting, it's okay. I don't mind answering any questions like we're going to have question and answer session tomorrow afternoon. But also, it wasn't a personal, highly personal question. Maybe other people have the same question about the Brahmin. I don't know. It was a funny question. But Tajil, you know, actually I was thinking that I really need the help from disciples and my God brothers and all the devotees from the Godbrothers and all the devotees. I'm also there to help them whatever they need. But I need their help also to help care for all these devotees that are taking shelter spread around a little bit. The mercy and from the older disciples and they also guide the younger disciples. Sometimes there's special opportunities when they get like those who come on safari. We have a lot of personal association. Sometimes even sometimes those who travel with me it's not always. Sometimes it's so intense that they don't. They don't get so much time even to ask the question. Traveling might be very intense Sometimes Mayanpur is a difficult place. Bengor, Purnima, Vyas Puja. People come from all over India and all over the world. So then I feel I have to come from a long distance. I have to see them the rest of the year. May upward devotees at Sriyachatra Dasi and Ranastami and Ishma Panchak Karthik there are not so many outsider devoidings. So the locals get more of my time. But I think this year I'd like to give the maximum. I like to make up because a lot of the local devotees here haven't seen me personally. But it's going to require also a lot of help and patience. Then I was thinking that now we're studying the big temple and I have to do more hands on management with the big temple designing or some fine tuning of the also making the exhibits. So whenever you do something hands on that means you don't have time for other things. You have to just focus. And then a couple years ago in India they decided all the zono secretaries have to be more hands on. Check the temples, spend more time in each temple. That's good for the devotees in those temples. But it also means sometime when I'm there I'll have to talk about management. It's not like all the time will be just for the disciples. So this is the big challenge we want to take care of. As I said, it's the responsibility also of the spiritual master. Take care of Krishna can expand himself into unlimited forms where the guru is just of course not. I only can make 10 forms but I still only one. So it's going to require a lot of help from everybody. How to give the association help. You know, sometimes the Lord is sending emails. Sometimes I get two hard emails in one day. It would take me three days to answer them. So email has become also like impossible situation. And then people say I didn't get an answer from my email. So my guru doesn't love me. Which is not the case. Just I don't know how to deal with all this information. We've been working on it for a few years. We still don't have the formula. If anybody has any ideas. I've been answering all my emails myself, only getting help for drafting. Not a single email is replied by a disciple. Let's name his email himself or some general thing where they write it. We can see it's them who's writing. Maybe that's not possible to do because just to sort through all the emails and figure out what's relevant, what's not relevant. Some people write to me Dear Jaipada Goswami, what is Gorburni Vivian? So then if I have to answer all those letters it'll be known to have someone who really has the crisis. Gurudev, I'm ready to jump out the window. I need this. So now let's soar down and see which is the essential one. I may have to have everything go through our secretary first. So far it hasn't been like that. But I don't see all the emails either. So in the modern day we have this modern expectations and modern situations and I'll be spending more time in my airport than how they was thinking. Somehow we can set up some webpage and have worldwide ishtagostis where people can ask question and answer on the Internet. That may be one way use the modern technology. I heard they have such kind of user groups where at one time few hundred people are online maybe that have some schedule. He didn't. He also had hands on work. He was translating his books. He had a very good system. No email. All right, good secretaries who answered the mails. He would dictate and they would just give a little indication what he wanted and then people would write down. So now that I'll be spending more time in Mayapur, see more of the Mayapur devotees and maybe we can also work on a system how to take care of. I haven't given up, still trying. I need all the devotees patience and help also because now the most important thing that Prabhupada asked me to do was help in building the big temple of Mayapur that's coming up. That's definitely going to take some energy. We're going to do something very nice. At the same time Prabhupada told me many things. I'm still going to be visiting people all over the world. I'm still going to visiting people all over my zone. Just a little bit adjusting the percentages. So I need the help also from all the other devotees too. First try to get your questions answered from senior godbrothers, God sisters, spiritual Uncles, older cousin, brothers. Then if you can, sometimes we'll have a question and answer. Then you can ask to your heart's content. You have the opportunity to ask. But don't think that if for any reason, sometimes there's a delay like the last two months I haven't answered. Even if as I was in the middle of a festival and there's so probably maybe 10 emails I answered out of thousands. It's not that I don't answer emails. Maybe there's 30,000 letters I write a year or something. I get 30,000, so 15,000 don't get me by something. I don't know all the statistics. So Bhakti, Siddhartha, Satakra, he had 10,000 disciples. And we heard that he had for he had like a counselor group type situation where for every so many disciples there was a Upadesha, one counselor, one guide. For so many guides there was a Mahu Padisha who would guide the guides. And then for all the Mahabhu Pradeshiks there was one Maha Mahupadeshik who would guide them. So all the guiding care was going on through a delegated system. When some question came up with him that nobody else could answer, come up to him, then he'd give the answer. So there's ways of doing things. Prabhupada, when he was here in Mayapur, he would keep one hour or two hours a day. When those open door policy, anybody could come and see you. Things like that time when you do get a chance for personal association. Sometimes I want to speak alone. Babba said these are all confidential devotees. You can speak here that all of us, especially the gurus, it's their duty to take care of devotees and everyone who is like what you tend to order everyone to be a guru. So that means you all have to be responsible to help those who come to us for help. I'm not making any excuse. I don't want to make any excuses. I want to just say this is the challenge I'm faced with and, and working on it. I think part of the solution is a lot of help from which I've been giving a lot. I appreciate that very much. I'd like to take this opportunity to thank all the senior godbrothers, grand sisters, my God brothers who have been helping my disciples and all the temple presidents. Sometimes it's a thankless task to give people counseling, to give them guidance they don't always appreciate or follow. So I appreciate them very much. Somehow we want to get all these devotees back to Ka See Like I was reading once the Mahatmi of this Akada, he come the Akaras and Judas there came to Krishna for guidance. He wanted to know what was the glories of this Akadas. And then Krishna told you this theory? Well, this was explained by Bishista Muni and some other tank to somebody. And then he explained that there was in Gandharva Loka another planetary system in the universe. There was a husband and wife. One beautiful Apsara called Lalita. A Gandharva Apsara. And the husband was Lalit. Lalit and Lalita. And they loved each other like anything. Passionately they were attached to each other. They were intensively enjoying their family life. Frequently for some reason the Kandaiva Loka there was a visit from another, from the Naga Loka, another planetary system where all of the state entities live. And Lalit was requested to come and sing for them. But he was so much passionately attached to his wife while he was singing for this king of the knots or head of the knots. That supernatural power wasn't like some ordinary little slithering snake. He's a very highly intellectually developed, mystically powerful personality. Divine snakes. So while he was singing some well known Sanskrit Kanshim song, he was blowing the verses saying wrong. So this night because he had mystical powers he checked out what is this? What's wrong with this Vrindava? Why doesn't he sing the songs right? And then stuff like that. He's thinking about having, you know, relations with his wife. He's lusting after his wife while he's trying to give me some holy Kanchan. This person's a really fallen person because he had this mischief. So then he curses. You rascal. You're greeting me and you're missing out the verses and you're just thinking about your wife. I curse you to be your accessor. You will wander the earth and you'll be a thing and you'll be man eater, cannibal. So then just wandering around eating us poor human beings. I don't know. Naga should have thought what about human beings? You know, you curse someone to be a Rakshasa but then he eats us. We get the downside of it. So his wife Khalida knowing that because of her attachment to her means she was unable to make him Krishna conscious and not inspire him more. And Krishna conscious that some only inspiring him on the material side he got cursed. And now he said wow, what a horror. He's like demon huge and wandering around and smashing people and eating them and doing weird taste. So she was really unhappy. So she went to this, that same Rishi that did the yagya for Lord Ram. Sringa Rishi Sringa Rishi Sringa Maharaj is Ashram Rishi is Ashram Rishi Sringa Rishi. And see the oh beautiful Apsara Rishta tres chillin is Ashram. Whose daughter are you? He says I'm the daughter of such and such Gandharva. I come here from Gandharva Loka. What do you want from me? I have this problem that my husband because of a curse he's become a Rakshasa. And I want to free him from this Rakshasa. What can I do to free him from his? And he said well, this is common Dhanakadasi. If you observe the fast and dark odyssey, you get free from all kinds of curses, all kinds of offenses. And you observe this fast, you'll come to Dankanasi, your husband will be free. She observed it and then the next day her husband begging in as an Apsara freed from his Rakshas of birth. So this Kamda encirc free us from offenses. I pray that I will commit any offenses. Please forgive me. In this holy kindness I get free from all the offenses, any curses. And especially to those devotees who looking to me for help, I haven't. They feel that I haven't been able to help them as much as they need. Somehow need to get the list of people that need help and prioritize it. But keep working on that. In the meantime, don't curse if you don't want to be kill our actions. Sample answer time while he's asking Good question Chanduvitas. What does it actually mean when the guru takes care of the desires and desires they have trained the guru Sri Lanka in what sense should the guru take care of the Visayas? Does it mean he has to say, you know, when they should eat and sleep? Or if it says in the spiritual states, what does it actually mean that the guru takes spirit and time? Well, one thing is that there's some standard things like as far as when to take the shot of all those kind of things, how to brush your teeth. Those are pretty standard. Guru teaches one disciple and that disciple can teach everybody else. Prabhupada taught somebody how to put on a doti. Wasn't he teach every single disciple how to put on a doti. It's the kind of percolation of things. How to elevate, protect, protecting the disciples from deviation, protecting them from bias, guiding them so that they can so much of that is done in group format. The Prabhupada made programs how his disciples could progress in devotional service. Chanting 16 rounds a day following the four principles stimuli books. Prabhupada always was coming up with ideas how to help the disciples. He comes up with programs to help immediate facility for disciples to get their questions answered. It says the spiritual master's concern sees concern, but it's also surprising. Like in some other missions, they ask the guru, how do your followers? How are they supposed to practice emotional service? That's not my initial here. Prabhupada said. No, it should be their concern. We're concerned. I hear we're trying to create a city in Mayapur that devotees can come and stay here. That they can be ka conscious. It'll be example for the world. All these are all the Prabhupada's concern for the movement and our concern for the the mornings are ready. Thank you for watching our videos. Be sure to subscribe to our channel.
