This is a recorded lecture (YouTube) of Jaya Pataka Swami on Śrīmad Bhāgavatam 1.4.26–29 given in Mayapur. The speaker cites Vyāksadeva and the Mahabharata, then examines the difference between mechanical/self-satisfied practice and genuine devotional perfection. Key themes: importance of pleasing previous ācāryas (Sadhu–Śāstra–Guru), avoiding fanatical or deviant sects, active preaching strategies (book distribution, Gita study courses, small-group discussions, friendship-based outreach, Food for Life), adapting programs for local contexts and youth, and reflections on missed opportunities since Prabhupāda’s era. The talk mixes scriptural exegesis, organizational critique, anecdotes, and practical calls-to-action for ISKCON members.
Sam Dharma translation By his divine grace Vyaksadeva said, I have under strict disciplinary vows unpretentiously worshipped the Vedas, the spiritual master and the altar of sacrifice. I have also abided by their rulings and have shown the import of disciplic succession through the explanation of the Mahabharata by which even women, Sundras and others, friends of the twice born, can see the path of religion. No one can understand the import of the Vedas without having undergone a strict disciplinary vow and the cyclic succession, the Vedas, spiritual masters and sacrificial fire must be worshipped by the desiring candidate. All these intricacies of Vedic knowledge are systematically presented in Mahabharata for the understanding of the woman class, the labor class and the unqualified members of Brahmanai, Shatriya or Vaishya families in this age, the Mahabharata more essential than the original Vedas. Thus ends the Bhaitivedanda Swami translation purport this page 26, 27, 28 and 29 of Chapter 4 Canto 1 of the Shimon Bible would tell in the matter of the appearance of sheep Hira the YASD has done a wonderful devotional service writing all the way that who could compare with such a wonderful service? 17 Puranas, Vedanta Sutra, even the Mahabharata. But somehow at the end of the day, he was not feeling satisfied. Yeshla Prabhupada mentioned some important points. Nobody can achieve or nobody has achieved perfection unless they're self satisfied. In other words, one of the symptoms of depression is you're satisfied or self satisfied. You're in a perpetual situation where you're content and satisfied with them, where some people are satisfied out of ignorance. But that's ignorance is bliss. It's not really perfection. Maya gives us some illusion like the goat eating the grass by the side of the butcher shop. And because he has grass, he is feeling very satisfied. Is there no intelligence to understand? Within a few moments the butcher is going to chop his head off. That's not perfection, because that's foolishness. But somebody has the full knowledge and if they actually achieve perfection, they should be fully satisfied. If a devotee is not feeling satisfied, that means there is some problem in their execution of Ka consciousness. So we asked the Deva when he wasn't feeling satisfied and he began to contemplate and self analyze self analysis for the purpose of understanding any deficiencies in our Ka consciousness, therefore is a very much authorized process as three kinds of for miles Sadhu Shastra Guru so here the Shastra is showing us that we should contemplate an example of the great Sadhguru. He when he was in this situation, he started to analyze. Why are I satisfied? Having done all these works, I should be satisfied, but I am not. So there's a problem here. What's missing? Something is missing. Sometimes devotees they become mechanical. As Jeremiah 16 rams Abura Mangalayati. I'll do my service. They get down, but they're not satisfied. For they're doing everything right. Here we are still saying that everything right, but it's not satisfied. That means there's something that we could have done. Something that's missing. She wants to find that out like that. She doesn't know what's under secret to get success in our Ka consciousness. What is that secret? Shi Ji should come down. Something should come down. What should come down? The whole process. Well, Proverb one said that vertical perfection we should please the previous Acharyas. The previous Acharyas have revealed things that they want done. If we do those, we're assured of satisfaction. Dislike distributing books. Our previous Acharyas they wanted that especially Sir Bhakti Siddhanta, Saras Vi Thakur, Kaching Ramhatta. This was desired by the Bigya Sacharyas, Bhakti Thakur and Bhakti Siddhan. The service of the building life for everybody desire. The Prabhupada was always dedicated to doing things that were pleasing the previous Acharya. He said. He said that my work is only half done. So much is left to be done. Prabhupada has left a lot for all of us to do. We need to find out what all the things that Prabhupada wanted to be done and the previous Acharyas wanted to be done and develop those areas. Otherwise we will also be dissatisfied. We don't please the holiness and chariots. This type of situation. The future the Harimony comes. That's why this chapter one is appearing. Rehasm appeared. Allah Beyn had already gotten his theory. Why not happened? It will be revealed in the next couple of verses. When his Guru came, he also asked him be sure. And Narad said, well, you're not ordinary disciple. You're incarnation. So have you introspect? He'll do it. Sometimes we try to understand ourselves. We do not realize. Then we go to our guru. Even if we have an idea, we bounce it off in spiritual master to see whether it's correct or not. This is a process. You want to always be sure what we're doing. In Sadhu Shastra, Guru Authorized it means that the devotees they have to do more than just the mechanical. They really want to get Lord with Krishna one by doing the mechanical process negative liberation from birth and death. The best son of fully satisfied love of Ka is fully satisfied. Pure devotion is fully satisfied superseded. When we are in big devotional service which is unbroken and unmotivated then we become superseded fully satisfied. As we go down max level of what that service is. That's also a factor. Gopa Goswami says Anandhuliena should do favorable devotional servants which is Arthur act. This following Parampara by some fanatical people. They pick up some idea. It's not authorized by Parampara. It appears to be something Ka consists. But they give their own median interpretation. Not following power of God. They go on pushing that, pushing that very fanatical. It's happening in all kinds of religions. Whether it's Al Qaeda. Hussein, you blow up towers, you're going to create another world around the world. And how to get any better terrorists creating so much fear. And fear. Whether it's some body preaching some deviant schism or Ka consciousness. Whether it just like it happened so much in historically Saharatiya's time of Bhakti On Takwa there were 13 deviant schisms from Chaitanya Mahabhara's movement. Sativeki, Sauranga, Agari. I remember all of them. Don't associate with it now I've got more brixic balance. Other kinds of maybe new type of swajyas people who follow different Bawas who claim to be avatars. South India there's someone claiming to be talking avatar. This guy has watched from Kalkin's not for 400,000 years. He came a little earlier this time. If you have, you know some Babas that claim to be Ka and Bengals. Some people claim to be so many things. But Chaitanya for his Shasta, his Krishna took the Murava. There's one guru claims he's avatar of Krishna. Also Krishna in the mood of a Mancha is assistant to the Gopis. So so many speculations and so many deviations. Even if we're at the right death, we still have to work. Really tried to find out what's the best use of our time. Well, we want these things to the go to our product. We should just be satisfied with our mechanical person. Let's also create some kind of what you call ego. I meddle with everybody else. I change my rounds. I never miss Bangaloreji. I always do everything you do. Anything special. Trying to do anything for prophet's mission. No, no. I do everything don't do. I don't have time for a prophet's mission. I don't have time for preaching that dirty issue in hand. You're going to stay up late at night people's homes preach to them. There's a problem with everyone out in house programs. You build handle programs house programs. And so there are some people there's so much into the salad they can't preach. So that way you can get liberation. But will you get love of God? Are we really following what Prabhupada wonder we should do our effort how we get the Prabhupada was trying to he considered the world's on fire. I mean I saw literally Prabhupada crying and the world is on fire. We have to do everything we can to put out that fire. The number of devotees we have in ISKCON today Prabhupada had a much smaller number of devotees. Right. We had so many devotees congregation members. But he had the whole world on fire. Everybody heard about Hare Krishna. Even though we didn't have a congregation hireling at that time. And so many people working so hard. Millions of books going out. There are more about these the less books going out today. Why his Brahman was pushing us so much. That's why he was urgent. It was an urgent need to put the world's fire out. And he wanted in his time to achieve something for spiritual master. I look back at what we've been doing the past 25 years since Prabhupada meta. Surely we tried to do many things but it seems like really didn't do nothing. That much was achieved as what we should have done first. We can say there's a lot of achievements. I was smiling one day at my avenue. I was many buildings, many devotees. Still not all that we could achieve. We missed many opportunities. And Mr. Shila Tobot he was an expert to take advantage. We didn't have all the now we have Internet. We have so many other technological advances which we could exploit. So I get sometimes when I come like Jasmujas the Prabhupada Jayas Mutirubha and I get really nervous. It's really easy to fall into the routine. You and I have a very intense routine. But maybe my routine had a very intense program. You go on all the way. You got to think back. Always really doing the most important things. It's what I'm doing what I achieve the most. For sure. Prabhupada how can I be of the best use Vishula Prabhupada if everybody was thinking like they were all directed. Everybody is really trying to push forward for the movement. And this movement wouldn't be doubling and we would be growing exponentially because we have so many more devotees. And you think mankind is only if we make one. Who? The Lord. A year you double. When he won devotee a year, he reduced it. Oh, he did that. He was the Bhakti program leader. And he made one devotee here to Tyra to make one neighbor, one relative, one cousin, brother, one parent, one Samdy a devotee in a whole year. It's not a big test. Somehow everybody took up this mission. And Vyazna had his mission. He wants to please the previous Acharya, wants to please Krishna. His previous Acharyas don't go that great for Sadhara, Devoni or Prabhupada Krishna. He only has the punitive belief. We have a whole life. So many fixville swamis. They made things easier for us because they define things. That means the Aztec had like open fields. But he knew his assignment was writing shastras. We've had already the shastras written. So we need to write more shastras or to translate them into English or different languages. To write things that people can understand easier. That type of slave Beyonce brought Mahabhara to make it easy. So there are a few writers. We had it like this. Holding his two bags for me. He is always writing. Yesterday so my grass Puja. He presented me a notebook that he'd been working on with Babylon. Sometimes I try to write something. I got more half finished books than. But for most of us, just distributing the balance. How to get out the knowledge. Balance is there now. We have high wits, we have Gita. We have all these literatures. How to give that knowledge to people. And some people may come and listen to their class and say what is this Maharaj doing sitting on some big tall seat and telling everybody what to do. They may not appreciate I look what they have. But they might have been just like they were under Pandu. He didn't appreciate what she told you. But when Bhakrishwar Pandit preached to him. Bakishar Pandit showed so many wonderful Vaishnav qualities that they had convinced Devananda. Papa, what he's saying must be true. What he said that Lord Chaitanu is actually Krishna. Then Devananda started to think about it in which Krishna come as a devotee. It's actually predicted in the Mahabharata. Predicted in the Quran. And yes, he has this quality. So then he got him. Then he realized, wow, I really love him. So different. I took Bakrishna upon him. Sometimes it takes the next door neighbor. It takes the personal mother, takes the prayer. I was at a seminar of the Navhat, partly rich world champions in what's their secret? And they said their secret. The way now they make the most devotees is through friendship. They have many fixed up devotees who believe in the class. We chant their 16 rounds or chant their regular rounds every day. And then they make friends with their neighbors, with their respect friends. And then through their friendship they get them to start chanting also. So the Bhabhu said, there's like the hard cell and the soft cell. So we Sanyatis and the Brahmin, we do the heart Jirhani Vishta. Now we're out here giving the hard salad. But that works for some people, a lot of people. I know one lady, she was attending Mahatha meetings for two years and she heard so many classes that you must be vegetarian, you must, you know, otherwise there's so much. But she's tired. He made this. When I get old or something, I go Bengali. We Bengalis, we eat fish. Without fish, how we can live? So this is obviously not for me. Then she went to a Bhakti Vaishnav meeting. And there in the meeting they had a little small group discussion. So in a group discussion they were discussing, you become what your senses are attached to in the next life. That means if you are very attached eating fish next night you can become a cat. Cat like fish. Then you ask everybody. Part of like the Mikhail group meeting is to get your realization, your application, your. So what do you think about that? She thought, wow, I never thought about that. I mean, I eat fish, I like fish. Because of that I may have become a cat in my next life. Well, that's what the scripture says. You know in the Bible they have a picture how to do me. How to tater half human have tree. When you're like a bear, you're sleeping off the tank. So then she thought about it and said, well, I don't want to be a cast, I want to be a typist. And from today on I give up this together sometimes it was a small group meeting. A small, you know, literally facing the reality of what we're doing. Krishna consciousness makes the most sense. Anybody with a little bit of intelligence has to accept it. How is it so many people aren't accepting? Isn't it amazing? Anybody who is Krishna Kantha understands. This is so clear. It's so perfect. Then why there are so many stupid people out there that don't accept it, right? Well, because somehow or another it's a very well kept secret. We had to buy very easy. And people are blocked off in India. They have so many blocks because they think, you know, oh, how many people in the book this series go say please take Bharat. No, no. I have Bharvagira. My dada has Bhagwangira. My mama has Bhagava. Nadu has Bhagavir. All my relatives, all my grandparents everywhere has Baranga. Sir, have you ever read Bhagavanga? No, I have no time today. Heaven. So it's like very good. This is a Snoopah special. As it is 6,000 so many things. He was somehow trying to get them to get the Bawi. But they know I'm ready to see 180 rupees on something cheaper. It's very tough, right? Sometimes we prank people. It's amazing. I've heard there's so many going billion people because they want to actually buy the books. Once they buy the book, then we have a program called Gita course to get them to read the book. Right here there's on Bengali. Probably most people in this room can't read. Says Gita study course. That's what it says. It's written in Bengali. But it's a Gita study course. Everyone understands that six months you get off the set and a gift and they get a diploma. You pass it and it's advertising Gita Prachat section. So they have this program Bhakti Purusha Dar Maha's great. He's a genius of coming up with wonderful programs for different kinds of people. Because you see so many people when they get the book, they don't need it, get them to study. And here we finally come to Mayapur. Paradox. Sita Gita study course come to Maya this town and the guest house. And they can stay for a four day seminar. Bhagavad Gita Maharaj Maharaj become convinced here they get Bhagavad eat. Of course we have also they get Bhagavad Klala, right? For all those who are buying the Bhagwat sets, our book distributors distributing the harbor sets. So they may have whatever people read it. I remember one lady member told me that for three years I had the books on the shelf. I never touched them. I never touched them. They look beautiful. You know our books, very beautiful. They look at the nights on the shelves everywhere, you see. But he had never read the book. So one day after three years, something happened. I remember like some divine mercy. And he decided to take out one of the books and start reading it. What is this for? He was reading and he said my goodness, it's so clear. I am a Brahmin, I'm a Pondian. I know so many suktas. Sri Sukta, Lakshmi Sukta. I know the Gusha Sukta, I know Sanyasi Sukta. I know so many suktas. But I don't know who's God in my altar. I have everybody. I have Vishnu, I have Durga, I have Pali, I have Karnakia. I got Shiva, I got new name, I got everyone. Yes, I know one of them must be God. I don't know which one. Now when I read Srimad Bhakta with him, it's so clear. Maharaj has a program. When they buy the bhagavatam, they read it out. This is very important. So like that Maharaj knows using his. And he has a team of people thinking about new programs. Now we can. Everybody can apply their whatever intelligence they have how to help other people doing help you stay passive and if you are ready, creative person. Always joined the team with Maharaj also I was taking new programs for congressional teaching where I'm working with him on that. Trying to always come up with ideas. But when you're local level also I just got a. You know, we got a report from Malaysia. There's so many between Canaan and Kuala Port. There's a big competition going on who can come up with the most ideas for expanding their congregation. Expanding into the Chinese community, which is a big breakthrough. And in Kuala Lumpur they have book distribution, food for life arenas. There's so many different cocails and the congregations. So it's very inspiring to see how many new programs and how little people have youth programs. They have this Father Lacina for the youth. So I think that that's going to be more pleasing to tell whether we can somehow and every place may be slightly different. What's the formula for each place. But definitely we should be concerned like Vyaskevi is concerned. In my thinking my deviants and charities. No way I'm not feeling so satisfied. Certainly we might be so little that many of us should start already becoming fully satisfied. Because in so much of the world, which is in Maya everywhere. And I read a very shocking article when I was in the safari about how the young educated boys and girls in the cities they're not maintaining their Brahmacharya anymore. They're not remaining celibate before their marriage. They're imitating the west more than the Western. They're not worried about AIDS or anything. So it's very shocking how much, how degradation is going into India's big cities very fast. Maybe in the small towns and villages it's not so much Hannah. And the big cities in spike quite quick, especially amongst the young people. Educated youth are watching television all the time. They think that these religious things is old fashioned, boring. So how to make it interesting for the youth? Big challenges. There are so many things to do. So now for me, I had my Guru Purnima festival and my safari preaching of the Ash Puja. Okay, now I have to go back on email. I have to start planning out all the preaching for the whole year. Visiting all the other temples, visiting the different places. So now for me it's like, okay, now planning out what we do for the year. I don't know for yourselves if it's like that, but seeing, yes, there he is planning out what do I do next. I still haven't got it perfect. I haven't fully satisfied Krishna Sahar. Did I feel intelligent Christians happy will be happy. I feel happiest when I'm trying to make Krishna happy. I don't say that I achieved my goals yet, but when I'm trying to achieve them, I'm trying to even think about them. I start feeling satisfied. Not that I want to stop. As soon as I stop, I don't feel satisfied. For me, the urgent me, the Prabhupada, the message he gave us as iskcon has the task to make this world Krishna conscious. And every one of you is empowered and has that blessing from Prabhupada. All you have to do is try to make yourself a stronger devotee. Submit yourself also to whatever capacity you have to help others to be ka conscious. I know that some gurus have some missions. They say that before you preach, everybody should be very qualified, that they will be qualified preaching. That's one outlook. Pakrino Thakur and his Mahato organization, he employed all kinds of people. He had sweepers, he had dalals, he had shopkeepers, he had treasures, barbers, tobis. Each one had a different task. So certainly for someone to be a shopkeeper, he needs to know more than to be at the lobby. But he said a talam is a broker, the shopkeeper. He has had certain policies in his name. A Naohan leader is a shopkeeper or a temple leader is a shopkeeper. Miksha Sutra Market. Depends how big the temple is. But since if you don't have that qualification, you can always bring people to them. You can always be a broker. If you don't have the knowledge to answer somebody's questions, but you know someone who has the knowledge, bring their people to them. And if they can sell their serving meaning, convince that person to take up. Krishna. Thank you for watching our videos. Be sure to subscribe to our channel. We publish new videos every day.
