20050104 || Addressing Devotees & Śrīmad Bhāgavatam (1.11.21) || Śrī Māyāpur, India

A Vaishnava teacher explains how Krishna responds to devotees based on their mood, using the story of Kaliya to show the reciprocal nature of devotion. The talk contrasts personal and impersonal views of God, and uses stories about Srila Prabhupada to illustrate why the guru-disciple relationship matters.
Assistant report other group of the jam Sam Sunday the pins Can I give away some love 21 for a Jaganese foreign SA yeah, but supervised the statistics next day joke Sami Salah Chakra Samuel like say take a negro agar but mother knowledge in my la and offer due honor and respect to each and every one of the friends, relatives, citizens and all others who came to receive and welcome Him. Purported by His Divine grace, the Supreme Lord personality of Godhood is neither impersonal nor an inert object, unable to reciprocate the feelings of his devotees. Here the word Jata bihi or just as Ib behooves is significant. He reciprocates just as it behooves with his different types of admirers and devotees. Of course the pure devotees are of one type only because they have no other object for service but the Lord. Therefore the Lord also reciprocates with such pure devotees just as it behooves. Namely, he is always attentive to all the matters of his pure devotees. There are others who designate him as impersonal and so the Lord also does not take any personal interest. This is how the Lord is equal with everyone, reciprocating their mood. I continue. He satisfies everyone in terms of one's development of spiritual consciousness and the sample of such reciprocation is exhibited here with different welcomers. Those hands of archived on the Swami translation purport so the Srimad Bhagavatam first came to 11th chapter 21st text in the manner of Lord Krishna's entrance into Dvarka, Krishna promises or explains that he reciprocates with everyone according to how they worship Him. So according to the Krishna is playing the part of a human role on this planet. Then he plays it perfectly according to the token called obverse, saying that the King came to receive him and offer him due respect as a junior he knows look up and embrace him. He will embrace him like that with everybody. He reciprocated fear devotee comes watery eyed with love, tears of love in your eyes. Krishna will also reciprocate with them. He reciprocates with everyone just in an appropriate manner. So Prabhupada uses this point. In this world we tend to be very impersonal. We bring our impersonal concepts over to the Supreme Person in this world. Whatever personal experiences we have, many times they are causing a suffering. Therefore we want to think that spiritual aid has nothing to do with personality. Therefore this way we'll be insulated from suffering. But actually Krishna is the perfect person. He doesn't let anybody out, he responds appropriately, just as it behooves for every circumstance. So the devotees, they get a reciprocation of love. The demons who attack Krishna, Krishna reciprocates them just as it behooves and he defends himself and it rewards it with behooves it. They reciprocate with the divine killing because some people went through those burn. In the case of Kalia, Krishna jumped on the hands of Kaliyah, was dancing the wives. The Naga Patnis of Helia prayed to bishop to have mercy on their husband, that their husband was not a devotee, he was a demon and therefore he should bless. In this case, maybe Kaliyah deserved to have been violated because his relatives intervened for him, pleaded for him. So Krishna was dancing on his head and with every. It's pretty difficult to dance on a moving serpent's head. So he's therefore known as Mataraj, the supreme dancer. Matabhra. You hear about dancers complaining that the floor wasn't level. This was a moving floor. Krishna, by the taps of his lotus feet on the head of Kaliyah gradually knocked out all the poisonous nature of Kaliyah and he was gradually turning into a different person. He was a hateful poisonous snake that was killing people indiscriminately with his poison. By the touch of Vishali's feet and Anamana was the settlement of the feet, he became mellow. So this is possible. Krishna was the vocates. So here as he's entering the capital city of Dwark and all the devotees are coming to greet him. He's been gone for some time, so they're all missing him. So he reciprocates with each one. I mean God also, Krishna can reciprocate with each one of our needs. People all over the world of different faiths and different religions, they pray to the Lord and he reciprocates according to their faith. Chaitanya Mahava's movement is there to approach people of all the religions, to help people to achieve pure love. If we approach the Lord with pure love, then obviously he's going to reciprocate differently than if we approach in some kind of business mentality. Generally we approach God asking for something mundane, approaching for some material benediction. Therefore it's a conditional kind of approach. So Krishna also reciprocates conditionally in order for us to practice this personal interchange with Ka. Obviously Krishna doesn't want to be the guinea king because if you approach him in the wrong way, if we are directly face to face interacting with the supreme personality of Gandhi in some offensive manner, then that would be detrimental and undesirable. So the process is while we're in this world, we serve Mishna through our spiritual master or through spiritual masters. Spiritual master is like anything, he's the practice person. But he's very merciful and tolerant. He just means of devoting himself. His job is to train people how to serve properly. So he has to also find out the areas that need improvement, point out the defects. He has to encourage the areas which are going properly. Krishna is watching how the disciple serves the Guru. What is the respect, what is the manner in which the disciple is approaching the spiritual master, whatever that service is offered to. Guru Vishnu accepts that Today we have an ISKCON maybe 70 plus spiritual masters of which this holiness Shamimaras is one of them. You know him since? Since I came to my effort. Somehow he became a devotee in England, in Birmingham, London or Birmingham. Anyway, at one point he was preaching in Birmingham. He's actually from Calcutta. His uncle, his family is quite aristocratic from a very old Bengali family. And his uncle was one of the famous Trickan stars of India in the past years. His name was Pinaki Rai. Probably nobody now or in multiple. So like that he was from a very well to do family and they sent him to England to get his master's degree and there he met Rokha, he got his master's degree and he went Drova. He became a devotee. He preached the Bhakti Prajatanand Maharaj in Malaysia was given a book by Subag Maharaj. And so they're all friends since then. Subhag Maharaj is like his Varatma Pradasha guru. So I remember when he came back to India he was from a charity and his mother came out to see him, wanted him to go back home. The Prabhupada was upstairs in the room. And the Prabhupada would always say that how Bengali mothers, they're very affectionate to their children. Sometimes he told Ravishta Maharaj preached with the courage of an Englishman and the heart of a Bengali mother. He's from the uk, so many soft hearted and affectionate mothers. So when she saw her son, she almost became mad. She was rolling in the floor, Prabhupada Darshana. She was crying, I can't live without my son. And it was a real thing. And then Prabhupada said, no, but your son can go with you. She was like, really? Yeah. We don't object. He wants to go. He can go with you. We're not objecting. We're not keeping him here. So she was taken aback with no resistance. But he has to decide if he wants to go with you or he wants to stay here. So what do you want to do, Subakama? Well, Subhad was wanted to stay with Srila Prabhupada in spite of all the extreme affection from his mother. But he wanted to serve Karlpa. But he said, mother can come here and see me. He could keep making contact and everything. But he wanted to remain in the mission. Later the mother they still have a very nice family and they mellowed out there. It was just initial strong seeing her son as a priest. But the last name is Fawan as student. So like I said, you can see that Subhai Varnage was very attached to Prabhupada. Prabhupada had a Darshan from 4 to 6 every day near Myanmar. It was a special feature in my own work. He said that Indian people want access to their gurus. The sanyasis, the gurus, they should be approachable. So therefore he had this open hour, two hours actually. So then he at that time Rao failed. So what Marshall did, he would take advantage. Not everyone would. Not all the devotees would come. But he would always come and ask Prabhupada questions and be there. So there was a very personal loving relationship between Pramopan and Subhag Maharaj. Subhar Maharaj. He was not like a manager to take the thing by the pressure. But he was very good preacher. Always a very good preacher. And he is very affectionate to all the his God brothers and everyone. So I think Prabhupada was very affectionate to him. I was thinking that how this version today in the Bhagavatam Krishna reciprocated. How Prabhupada reciprocated with two Bhagavams. How reciprocated with everybody. We had an opportunity to serving Srila Prabhupada which was purifying. We can see how Prabhupada would reciprocate with the affection of the different devotees. Like the Chura Maharaj. He'd come in every day like that. At one point he became one of the servants of Prabhupada. Normally when you are serving the Prabhupada at the beginning of the day and that's like enough. But he would bow down every time he came in even if he was drunk for 20 seconds again. Next time he bowed Up. Stay down, Prana. Sometimes I want to speak to him. It was like urgent, but he was going through the whole protocol of, you know, full obeisance and pranam. And then Prabhup was sitting there. He said, don't be a Dandavar Bhakta. Sometimes truly Dandavar, you know, I want to speak to you. But all very affectionately. And like that practitioner was very soft dealing with Prabhupada. The Prabhupada had to he also very soft. I was always getting thoughts. I was maybe a little neglectful, so I needed to be woken up sometimes. So like this, he was a little affectionate, but sometimes scold me for my mistakes. One time after scolding me very heavily, not so heavily, maybe he thought it was pretty heavy. I was pretty devastated. He called me back after a while and he said, how do you tolerate me? I'm such a harsh spiritual master. That was the worst. I was the one who made the mistake. Why are you apologizing to me? But then he was like just testing to see whether how much I was really, you know, did he go too far? Did he ruffle my rings too much? Did he? Twice he did that to me. So he was always like very careful. Occasionally, very rarely he would get heavy. But occasionally he did. Sometimes he would check to see whether it was too much. So it was, I think how we have the Vaitung guru to get the opportunity to actually practice what it will be like dealing with the supreme personality around him. But for that to happen, there has to be a proper guru disciple relationship. If the disciple doesn't have proper respect for the spiritual master, if there's not a proper affection or proper devotion, then the spiritual master can really be be very open in all the dealings because the relationship is still not so developed. Did you get too heavy? I thought my brother would be asking me what he was saying. I'm so high or something. I thought, well, Prabhupada doesn't think he very surrendered. That's what he's checking. I thought it was like somehow I failed. We did a decent maybe there's nothing probably to do that was going to break my faith. But anyway, I thought just testing him out with another test was a heavier test. Remember how Ramananda was saying in 1967, maybe Prophet walked into the 22 Second Avenue. Was it 22 Second Avenue? 26 Second Avenue. 22, 26 was the first two. Then everybody paid a basis to Prabha but put their feet to the knees. So the Prabhupada with his king, he reached over and tapped Brahmananda and tapped him on the tail and said, don't put your feet to the lilies. And his first reaction, look around. Why me? Everybody's facing with their feet to the deities. Why? I got signaled out where hanging Nosley. But then his realization was that okay, that was actually a blessing. Because Prabhupada knew that I could take it if he signaled me out or chastised me. I'm going to take it, I'm going to swallow it. Maybe some other new devotee wouldn't be so submissive. So that sometimes some devotee may be used as an example to train the other disciples. So one gets chastised not specifically because that person is the only one at fault, but he's the one being used as an example to train everybody else. Everybody should learn from what's happened. I remember once Srila Prabhupada was instructing some disciple for a mistake. And some other disciple just came in. He started like smiling, thinking it was funny. He's getting the sauce. He's getting distracted or he's getting chastised or whatever. And probably looked into what's wrong with you? This is meant for you too. And then that devotee got real sick. He was laughing at the other person being instructed at food poisoning. Somebody sent a cake, luxurious cake from France. What kind of pastry? Krishna knows how many days it was in transit and actually have become poisonous. Just that did only happen to taste the kid. You got food poisoning, which is very horrible. I mean, I don't describe what happens when you get food poisoning. All kinds of body fluids come out of all kinds of places. I don't know. But we can't say for sure. It was connected, but it seem quite coincidental. And Noah learned that the Prabhupada was instructing one be very serious. Trying to understand what was the point to learn from this. Because we all need to learn from our own mistakes. Or somebody else made a mistake from their mistakes. Not a matter of enjoyment. Krishna is always very smiley and kind. You never see him. He does at least to the gurus to do all the instructing. Even when he instructed Arjuna. But Bhagavad Gita was with a smile on his face. Krishna is always very gentle and kindness spiritual master is also very merciful. He takes the devotees of Krishna and brings them to the correct path to serve Krishna. Bhakti Bhikasha said that sometimes when the Maha Prashad went out from his room as the guru used to give Much more gurus than they can eat. So they did something less than the plate. And then he was taken out. He sent a spy to see which disciples were being picky about what mahaprasan to take or who was doing more. Just taking whatever came or was taking a type of spit off of or whatever. This would be really good test what was their devotion. Well, they can do that, but he didn't. That's why he mentioned it. All kinds of little things. So somehow the verse fits to the how Krishna reciprocates. So Krishna reciprocates with the devotees how they deal with their spiritual master. And if you scare an insect, the same insect. This is a very hard issue because of course we have somewhat different opinions about guru Tattva and how they deal. Different profiles for different gurus, different types of orders. Aberrandi Traditionally you can see that gurus always took each other with respect. He's not to be considered as an ordinary person because he's only a Krishna. Or someone surrendered to Krishna and serving Krishna. So he's treated as like an ambassador of Ka. So Krishna watches how you treat. I know a number of some things. The guru didn't take any kind of special reception or anything even in private. And disciples are stepping over as a plague and not training. The initial. The formality that was there in the Vedic system was to train someone to deal properly. Once you have pure love, you wouldn't do that anyway over somebody's food that he loves. We don't have at least have war, nagrams or respect. And they learn how to deal. And that's a precursor, a training to develop actual love. That's what Krishna watches. How you feel. Maybe spiritual master is not able to reciprocate as expertly as Krishna is representative. But he's not Krishna. He's a devolient Krishna. Sometimes a guru may be more merciful even than Krishna. Even the disciple makes the fancy till the guru forgives again and again, still tries to bring the disciple back. Even the Bhagavatam said that even if it is, unless the disciples contaminate other disciples, why should the guru reject him? What will he gain? Disciple will just be cast adrift in the material world and won't be in hell. So the guru, even though the disciple may make so many mistakes and help with so many mother again and again trying to lift up the disciple and get the disciple back on the track. Because the guru takes this trouble for Ka Ka is very grateful to the spiritual master. That's why spiritual master is due so much respect from the devotees doing it right in the tan. I remember in Vrindavan in 1977, the last days, I was sitting next to Srila Prabhupada. I don't know if I was spamming him or talking to him or someone right next to him. A little crack between the bed and the wall. And the Srila prabhupada lifted up his hand. It was very thin. It was just very thin. Prabhupada used to be so much healthier, but now it's very thin and emaciated. He said, look here. This is because I took too many unqualified disciples. Now I'm getting a reaction. Rahma was healthy all the years, but at the end he had no reaction. So society also had to be very careful not to break principles, not to put the guru in difficulty. The reaction may not come right away, but it can come different ways. So the prabhupada said that disciples should be merciful to the guru. We have our initiating guru, spiritual master. He directly takes our reactions. We give him the most respect, formal respect. We also have the instructing spiritual masters who seek shabu to give us guidance and training. They're also worthy of respect because they're giving their mercy to us. Are all like gurus because they're all teaching us by their examples. We call every vaishnava as a prabhu, as a master. Today is the holy day in this world. Shivak Maharaj appeared and this is the holy titi. And fortunately he's not with us physically, but we know he's here with spirit. So also remember him. Today, on this day we can glorify all the spiritual masters and the whole spiritual nature of the whole Guru parampara. Once we take initiation in the varappara, that means that the guru makes a contact, literally that he'll guide us and represent the farm prabh. But it's also on behalf of the farmhara. So we're connected with the farm prabh. Later, the guru breaks his part of the contract. We still should remain part of the farm brah. The rest of the gurus are still there to protect us, to remain under the siksha shelter and within the same discipline. Succession, no matter what happens, long as you know we're in a border fight. The slick succession, it would be offensive to Leah. So we're in a really fortunate position to name this disciples succession. Coming from Mo Chaitanya coming from Shiloh, Bhakti Siddhartha coming to Srila Prabhupada. His different representatives. So we're very fortunate Shah was staying in this Pranaya. Keep on with our devotional service. Thank you all very much. I have to. Today I'm going. I'm going to run my train to Orissa. Border of the end of the beginning of just about almost the beginning of Shri Chetra northernmost part of Or Vista. We have many namahajas and lots of karma. Thank you for watching our videos.
