20050501 || Bhagavad Gītā Class (11.55) || Dublin, Ireland #JayapatakaSwamiArchives

A recorded Bhagavad-gītā class by Jaya Pataka Swami (ISKCON) focusing on devotional service (bhakti), Lord Chaitanya's mission of inclusivity, criteria for identifying avatars, and the life and work of Srila Prabhupada. The lecture blends scriptural explanation (Bhagavad Gītā and other śāstric sources) with practical congregational-development topics: temple and satsanga growth, outreach programs (prison, rehab, rathayātras), and everyday temple services (deity worship, cooking, garland-making, cleaning, web/administration). The speaker emphasizes chanting the holy name as the guaranteed method for success in Kali-yuga and encourages active missionary/servant roles within communities.
I'm experiencing the presence of Krishna Otanya. Then he said, I also will be present with you as the Archa avatar, as the installed deities, as the worship of all deities or the deebees that we worship. That's also form of the Lord's incarnation. We come together in the temple, we chant Hare Krishna. We can also associate with Lord Chaitanya. See. But these unscrupulous people, they just. Oh, you see, I'm the next Avantar that says he's going to come again. I am the one. I can tell you stories about that. But anyway the. So we can be here in Leicester, Birmingham, London, wherever. We can also directly get association from Washington. Let me chant his holy name Hari Lord Chaitanya. It was predicted that he would come back. How do you know who's an avatar? Maybe this is said okay, one left, two people left. Some people claim to be an avatar. But how do you know that someone's an avatar? Anyone can claim why I'm an avatar. They said there's three ways you can tell. One is scripture. Should the Shastras the maiden, they should say the Bhavatar will come. And this should give some references. This is what he'll do. This is what his look like. This is who his mother will be. This is where he appears. Here something description should be there. Then the second is that the person who should match up with the description is that enough? Then send out the Almontar. Then he'll be golden color and someone comes who's green color or some other color. Everything should match up. Then prediction. Then the third thing is that he should be able to do some wonderful things which ordinary people cannot do. Some miraculous things. He predicted. He says all these different sectarian religions they are like in a fortress. They put in himself in a fortress. But Chaitanya Mahaprabhu he was trying to unite everyone. All the different sampradayas he'd go all the temples. He discussed with Boris, he discussed with everyone. His word was trying to unify everyone. He appreciated whatever good was there in any process. But then he was also. Most people say well this our way is the only way that you can get any spiritual benefit. The other way is maybe you have severely prejudiced with what I said to the Pope opinion of other religions. But well, Watchaitanya what he said that an system from the Vedas is that we should chant the holy names. This is the only way. The only way. The only way it's mentioned in the Veidas. Chant the holy name. Chant the holy Chant the holy name. If you want to be guaranteed to get success, there's so many other processes even in the Vedas you can do it, you make some progress. But whether you get all the way to the goal, that's the question. It may not. There's no guarantee because the other processes are too slow acting. But Chandi Hare Krishna is very quick acting. So you can be guaranteed they reach the goal in one lifetime. That means the other processes are bona fide. They're all bona fide process. But they run from another environment, another age. If you do this time, it'll help, but it may not get you all the way there in one lifetime. They take many, many births. That's the difference. So we appreciate the different processes that Brim has. But to guarantee by encouraging people that if they can't chant the holy names, you'll be guaranteed to get the results. Once Lord Chaitanya Last night I was in the Middle east and they showed a drama about how there was a big struggle between the Vaishnavas and the Shivites in South India. The Shivite king made a plot to kill the Ramanuja unless he accepted Shiva as supreme person. Eventually his secretary Ramanuja rather put on Ramanuja sagacity clothes and went to see the king. The king tortured him when he didn't accept Shiva as supreme and took out his eyes. And later he was worshipping the Bar Razini and Kanchipura and he got back his eyesight even though his eyes and physically poked out. So they were telling. So then there was something. Lord Chaitanya, when he went to South India, he went to the Shiva temples, he went to the Ganesh temples, he went to the Vishnu. But every temple he would share Hare Ka his mood was trying to unify. But if you discuss with him, he had the philosophy very clear. Krishna is supreme. But all these other Devas and Devi, they are all Krishna's devotees. They're also worthy of respect, but they're not independent. So like this we have a very wonderful tradition, Prabhupada. If we just hear his light, we could talk unlimited about how Srila Prabhupada struggled in his lifetime. There was the whole preparation. How he had heart attacks in the ship on the way over, how he had a stroke when he was in New York, was paralyzed. But somehow he was still going on preaching consciousness in spite of so many obstacles. And then finally different things started to happen. Different temples in America, Canada opened and the devotees came to London and George Harrison took an interest in them. John Lennon trying to do it without making a big promotion. If anybody is sleep, then the Nicom. So then here they have Radhakrishna temple. And then they had the Hare Krishna mantra hit the parade. Number one in the hit parade. Hare Krishna writes London. Here was a big turning point in the Ka Consciousness movement started that Prabhupada brought to the Americas. Then it came here and became another level with the help of the veto. And then everybody heard about Hare Krishna pretty quick. When Ja? N went to Montreal to give peace a chance. Nathan Kazi already knew that the Bodhi is here. He called. I was the president of Montreal. He called me over with a group of Kirtan devotees to be in his hotel room on the main street there in Montreal. So when you hear give piece of chants, it's the devotees chanting Hare Krishna. It was me and a few other devotees chanting Hare Krishnas who would jam there. People. Hare Krishna was in the youth move at that time. It was very popular. People appreciated that gave a big boost. People got to know about Krishna consciousness. But initially there was so much struggle that Prabhupada had to do. They didn't spend like anything. And Khanad made temples one year in Prabhupada's presence. Then after every 10 years, it's been doubling more or less. Like after 1986 was the 500th anniversary of Lord Caitanya. At that time we had about 215 temples. And then 1996 was the Prabhupada Centennial. By that time we had 350. Now we have something like 500. But apart from temples, because we try to. We have the concept that we want to have so many Satsanga groups. Just like we have a center here in Leicester and Birmingham. But then around here there was a number of cities mentioned where people currently get together and share Hare Ka. Or within a city. Like there's a small city outside Calcutta called Manjam Gram. And it's about 1.5 million people. And mostly middle. Middle class, economic. Indian standard economic. But they have in the past 10 years started from five groups. And they have now 75 groups in one little. One little. Nobody heard of Bundyn Grand. This is right. Nobody heard small place. It's halfway between Barstad and Calcutta. And Siblings. It's not even on the map. But they have 75 Mahja groups there, 75 Bhakti Bhiksha groups. Because the devotees, they just keep on. Some devotees have dedicated themselves to after work hours, to getting together and to preaching. I have a little presentation which I gave to the GBC body, showing about what's happening. A quick overview report about our congregational development around the world and some of the instructions that Prabhupada gave about devotees who practice Ka consciousness from their home. Because I'm also the minister of congregational development. So I mainly. I don't know what percentage, but say mainly, maybe more than half my time I'm dealing with the congregational development issues in iskcon, although I also have a lot to do with the time. Now we see that it's all connected. What's the temple without congregation? What's the sun without sunlight? You need both, you need otherwise. So we're trying to also make the temples as places of pilgrimage for the devotees. We are also now doing prison preaching for some of the professionals, doctors and other people who they can get the clearance from the local government. They can go into the prisons and do some programs even in T H jail. Have you heard of T high jail in India? It's like the biggest jail in Delhi. They have a very big program for the prisoners, for the jail keepers and for the police. And highly. They gave a really big letter and said now all the prisoners want to have such programs. Mostly when prisoners go out of jail, they go back to pray. They're hoping that with some cultural programs, some spiritual orientation, they'll be able to get rectified. We also do in Malaysia programs at the drug rehabilitation center. And there those people, the addicts who go through our programs, 60 to 80% don't go back to drugs. Which for them is remarkable because normally it's 80% go back to this. The exact opposite. 80% go back. Very few people actually get triggers. They're all their friends and associate. But by being devotees, by associating with the devotees, then they haven't changed. They learn the orientation. They learn. I pressed the program in La Gracio for 100 people. One of our devotees from the congregation is the doctor, government doctor for five jails. So she arranged to do a program. Regular weekly Bhagavad Gita programs. And the prisoners in the jail, they were chanting Hare Ka with mudrangas and kaikals. But they said the jokers did not dance because they thought that dancing would be immoral. They couldn't. They couldn't. They have to educate them. It's not. The dancing we do is not. When I would say to me, you're serious here. Song as you leave the dance. And one person was a lifer life sim. But he chant 16 rounds plays with her on you. So there's all kinds of outreach programs we can do to hospitals, to prisons, to jails, just to our friends and neighbors. So we're trying to encourage that people should take out this missionary spirit. There's a verse for prabhupada. He said a disciple of followers of Sannyasi guru who are vihastas. They also try to help to spread the Ka Conscious movement. And I know that you're doing rathiatras here in Birmingham, they do rath yatras. You're doing a precious. Even there are not so many. Like, I don't know if there are any temple devotees. I think everybody, maybe all congregational devotees here, but the programs are going on somehow. There's very few temples or if there's any. And so that's. You gotta put it lower than that. That's what you appreciate very much. But it's a sacra vesta yajna for Kali Yuga that we sacrifice a little bit of our time and energy to give Krishna to others. If you get one verse in Krishna and that person gets back to Godhead, you get a free speech. If you are a travel agent, buy one, get one free, right? Anybody interested in it, what to speak? It's. It's. It's Om Sa going away. He's not from the temple. So everybody sort of crowd crush in this big gaps in the floor. Everybody gap on the floor and people get in. Forward there, please. Forward there. Please move to the back of the bus. Jesus. Translation by his Divine grace, my dear.
Arjuna, connected with the supreme personality, Krishna must take this formula as stated by the supreme himself. Therefore, this verse is considered to be the essence of Bhagavad Gita. The Bhagavad Gita is a book directed to the conditioned souls who were engaged in the material world with the purpose of lording it over nature and who do not know of the real spiritual life. The Bhagavad Gita is meant to show how one can understand his spiritual existence and his eternal relationship with the supreme spiritual personality and to teach one how to go back home, back to Godhead. Now here is the verse which clearly explains the process by which one can attain success in his spiritual activity. Devotional service. As far as work is concerned, one should transfer his energy entirely to Ka conscious activities. As stated in the bhakti vasam rita sindhu 2255. No work should be done by any man except in relationship to Ka. This is called Krishna Karma. One may be engaged in various activities, but one should not be attached to the result of his work, the result should be done only for Him. For example, one may be engaged in business, but to transform that activity into Ka Consciousness, one has to do business for Ka. If Ka is the proprietor of the business, then Krishna should enjoy the profit of the business. If a businessman is in possession of thousands and thousands of dollars, and if he has to offer all this to Ka, he can do it. This is work for Krishna. Instead of constructing a big building for his sense gratification, he can construct.
A.
Nice temple for Ka and he can install the deity of Ka and arrange for the deity's service as is outlined in the Authorized Books of Devotional Service. This is all Ka Karma. One should not be attached to the result of his work, but the result should be offered to Ka and one should accept as prasadam the remnants of offerings to Ka. If one constructs a very big building for Ka and installs the deity of Ka, one is not prohibited from living there, but it is understood that the proprietor of the building is Ka that is called Ka Consciousness. If, however, one is not able to construct a temple for Ka, one can engage himself in cleansing the temple of Ka that is also Ka Karma. One can cultivate a garden. Anyone who has land in India, at least any poor man has a certain amount of land, can utilize that for Krishna by growing flowers to offer him. One can sell tulsi plants because Tulsi leaves are very important and Ka has recommended this. In Bhagavad Gita Patram Pushpam Palam Toyam, Krishna desires that one offer him either a leaf or a flower or fruit, or a little water, and by such an offering he is satisfied. This leaf especially refers to the Tulsi. So one can sow tulsi and pour water on the plant, and thus even the poorest man can engage in the service of Ka. These are some of the examples of how one can engage in working for Ka. In Summary in summary on this chapter, the universal form of Krishna, which is a temporary manifestation and the form of time which devours everything, and even the form of Vishnu four handed, have all been exhibited by Ka. Thus Ka is the origin of all these manifestations. It is not that Ka is a manifestation of the original Vishvaruk or Vishnu. Ka is the origin of all forms. There are hundreds and thousands of Vishnu's, but for a devotee no form of Ka is important but the original form two handed Shamsundha. In the Brahma Samhita it is stated that those who were attached to the Shamsunda form of Ka in Love and devotion can see him always within the heart and cannot see anything else. One should understand therefore that the purport of this 11th chapter is that the form of Ka is essential and supreme. Thus end the Bhaktivedanta purports to the 11th chapter of the Srimad Bhagavad Gita in the matter of the universal form.
Thank you Savot programs that describe in this verse my dear Arjuna who engages in my pure devotional service free from the contamination, suburb activities and mental speculation. He who works for me, who makes me the supreme goal of his life and who is friendly to every living being. He certainly comes to me here. The interpret prophet actually comments on each of these qualities. One is engaging in pure devotional service. Matkar Makin Devotional service means it's free from fruitive activities. Fruit of activities is where we work in for some material objectives. Most religion is for Punya, Karma or pious activities. You do some good works with the hope of getting some good material results for that. Just like in India, many of the stores and places love Suba, love auspiciousness and profit, Subha and love. So mostly people they're concerned with get rid of the obstacles in life and make another profit. Here's an interesting thing, Robert. You can build a big house for Krishna. You can live in a. But Krishna is the proprietor, so the devotee, he builds a house. He thinks I'm building the house for Krishna. We have so many devotees that are working in the Middle East. Those people that work in the Middle east, generally they're not allowed to settle down there. The expatriates like if people work in England, they tend to settle down in England, live in England, they make this their home. Probably most of you, England is your UK is your home. But there's not so much scope to stay there. You can't become a citizen very easily. Most places you can't come at all. Even your children are born there. They don't give their rights. So people tend to send all the money back to build a house. Normally in India some people migrate to this area. So now when they become devotees because they have some Ka conscious programs in the Middle east, then that idea changes. Now when I build a house, they want one floor of the house should be a temple. There should be a satsang area. Before they had a big garage, they had a big house. They had all the things, three story house temple with a small little closet somewhere. But by becoming Krishna conscious then that no more garbs. Now it's at his Upper temple or no more. The second floor becomes the temple. They changed the idea. Now you can have a satsanga. Will live on the top, bottom of the road is somewhere. But we'll have an area which is a very nice area. Where we can gather many devotees together. Larry said, bring us this temple room. Depending what kind of job they have then that's the idea that now we're building a house for Krishna. We're going to live there. But is Krishna's house. We want to use that for Ka. We'll practice our Ka consciousness. We'll help to spread Ka consciousness to our neighbors, to our friends. Everything can be done. But a devotee of Krishna will do things for Krishna. The orientation is different today. When devotee was telling me how in the beginning I went feeling so much eagerness to do devotional service. We were very selective about what service to do. I can't do this, I can't do that. But now, after some years, this devotee likes to do all kinds of devotional service. Even menial service. It's interesting because Krishna says here, mad Karma Kim, who does my service, does my work. Karma literally means work. Or she can say also service. Krishna also has some work. Krishna's main work in the material world is that we get back to him and get out of the material world. We're here in the prison house. He doesn't want that we should stay here. Running birth after birth, after birth, going through the 8,400,000 species of life. Now we're human beings. If we don't make it while we're human beings. Then we should go all the way back and start all over again to the cycle. And we want to work their way up again from amoebas, all the way up. So all the aquatics, the plants, then what comes next? The insects, the reptiles, the birds, animals, the 400,000 kinds of human beings takes a long time. So in the Bhagavad Gita, Krishna says somebody is like very determined. I don't want to serve Krishna. I don't want nothing to do. I don't want to think about anything to do with God. Or anything to do with spiritual life. Is there really determined like that? Okay. Ka fulfills what we want. So then puts us into some lower species. Where they won't have to worry about. They won't be thinking about anything spiritual. They'll just be in the highest struggle for existence. And they won't know anything else. Some insect or some animal or something. So many kinds of insects. Sure they don't have to worry much about existential reality. They see a light and they go flying into it. I have seen the light. So engaging in Krishna's words. We're going to say that how Krishna, he mentions that in the conditional life when we're in the material world, we connect to him by our service. We're in the mood. I'm the servant of Ka. So while serving him we connected. We're connected. And when we're liberated, when we are already in our spiritual relationship with Ka, it's called Surupa Siddhi or the perfection of understanding our relationship. Then at that time our relationship is what connects us to Ka. Someone is cow or girl serving Krishna. Somebody's a parent of Krishna. Somebody is a friend of Krishna or somebody's servitor of Ka. Or someone's a peacock or surabhi, cow or something, a plant of Vrindava. According to our relationship with Krishna, that's the relationship with our connection. That's when we're liberated. Right now we don't know our relationship with. So we can also connect by serving him, by serving his devotee. And like just like when in someone's house, in a factory and any kind of enterprise. But there's so many works to be done. Just like at the end of a movie they have all these credits, you think you know. But this like goes on and on for about 20 minutes. So many kind of people that. There's so many kinds of people that are helping in that movie. Lighting, seen, makeup, dressing, management, so much. This is all even on a small movie has so many people like that. In the Ka temple there are so many things that need to be done. There's the deity worship which is called Ayeshana. Part of that is the cooking, making the flower garlands. Here somebody made some nice flower arrangements. Someone made some nice garlands. In India you can sometimes buy the garlands ready made. I don't know if in the UK they have ready made garlands. I would doubt it if they did. It must be extremely expensive because. So here you garland makers. Of course, in Myopa we make our garland, we grow the flowers. Also we have a lotus pump, a lily pump. They go out in the morning with a boat and take the lotuses and bring vacuums, 4, 500 kilos of lotuses to make into gardens. I see about 25 ladies and devotees, other devotees making the garland every single day. Sometimes one lotus garland will weigh about 25 pounds or something. Bakul flowers are very light, very, very smiley scented. Then there's how quiet says that cleaning out their temple. There's when there's guests, serving the guests, welcoming the people. Today is a special love feast. So there's so many guests. Let's give the guests all a big welcome with the Haribo Haribo Haribo Haribol. We are serving Krishna water wingers get then you have to feed them. So there's prasad cooking for the distribution. Then there's prasad serving. Some of the warriors are serving facade this afternoon will be serving tonight. Then there's always a nectar service at the end clean up. Sometimes that service you find less people to do. Eating prasad is another service. That one you don't find shoulders too much. Some places there was this devotee Jain under Prabhu, very dear to Srila Prabhupada. He had an amazing service attitude. He was a qualified engineer, university graduate and everything. But sometimes he would do very simple services to please Krishna. And he had tremendous enthusiasm. He actually was the devotee that preached to me first when I came to the temple. So for me he's like a. We call it Pat Pradashaka Guru Guru who shows the way. We celebrate his adherence day. And people tell his pastime. I said when the boy is all the pastime. I was already in India at that time but in Los Angeles once he told Namah devotee, come on, let's get some nectar. Let's get the nectar. I said, wow. He was like so nectar. Okay, okay. And they all ran the nectar and the nectar was throwing out the garbage. And they thought nectar. He said yes, when we clean Krishna's temple, we're cleaning our heart. So when you're throwing out the garbage from the temple, you're throwing out the garbage from your heart. How many likes to throw out all the garbage? Thoughts, anxiety, stresses and different kinds of disturbing thoughts from the mind. Well, you know the secret. One of the secrets, a few secrets. But Prabhupada was always saying one day Mahaya Chanadha, it's one of our songs. And the guru Vastak then the guru is very happy. They say Mandira Maharjana. Mandira means temple and Marjana means to clean the problem. When you're cleaning the temple then your heart is clean. There's pastime in Chaitanya Chart Gundicha, Marjana, Chaitanya cleans the temple of Gunicha. And Jagannath Puri said at the end the temple was so clean as it was as clean as Vorchitanya's heart. And probably I don't know much four or six page purport on how this cleansing process is an analogy of how we have to clean our hearts. The way we may see this as some ordinary work and cleaning the temple. So even or you can do like you need somebody. Eventually this bulb has to be changed. Some very nimble person on the top of a ladder or someone with very long legs. We'll have to change that bulb. And sometimes there's electrical things that it looks like, but this is not our. It appears that somebody threw some rocks on the window there and it needs to be electrically cared. So that requires some kind of a carpenter person to repair windows and doors and things like that. So there's so many different kinds of works that people can do. Even answering phones, writing letters, computers. Some people go to temple. What's your service? Oh, I make the website for the temple. That's not a new service to make a website. Know that they have some special kind of programs to upload pictures and text to our website without too much technical skill. Blogging or something they call it. Someone showed me that Swan temple paragraph. Every day, you know, ads, new paragraphs, things that are happening, latest hot off the press moves. It's just like always up to date. You try to keep eyes on some websites and the oldest try to keep them up to date. Sometimes there are technical difficulties. The webmasters taking the final examination. She does pretty good usually. So the number of services is almost unlimited. We may think that this is an ordinary service, but actually in a higher level it's mystically connected to Ka. If you have little service to Krishna is devotee. It's also connected to Krishna. I remember now. It's in the month of Vaishaka. You know about the month of Baishak? Most of our devotees are from iskcon. They know about month of Dharmadhara. That means the month that comes in October. Thank you for watching our videos. Be sure to subscribe to our channel.
