A recorded lecture by Jaya Pataka Swami (Śrīmad Bhāgavatam class) discussing Bhāgavatam 5.8.15–16 and the story of Bharat Maharaja and the deer. The speaker explains how attachment can be misdirected from devotion to Krishna toward material or sentimental objects (the deer), the spiritual consequences (next birth), practical devotional discipline (chanting, ashram rules, group programs), and outreach strategies for temple congregations.
Ram. Sam. Ram. Sam. Ram. Sam. Ram. This is Sanskrit. Frozen Sam could not see the near. His mind would be very agitated. He would become like the miser who, having obtained some riches and lost them and had them become very unhappy. When the deer was gone, he would be filled with anxiety and would amended separation. Thus he would become a Lucian and speak as follies. Similarly, the Mai God become agitated when he did not see the deer. This is an example of how our attachment can be transferred. If our attachment is transferred to the Lord's service, we progress. Srila Rupa Goswami pray to the Lord that he would be as naturally attracted to the Lord's service as young men and young women are naturally attracted to each other. R. Chaitanya Mahbhravu exhibited such attachment to the Lord when he jumped into the ocean or cried at night in separation. However, if our attachment is diverted to material things instead of to the Lord, we will fall down from the spiritual platform. Bharat Maharaj would think, alas, the deer is now helpless. I am now very unfortunate. My mind is like a cunning hunter, for it is always filled with a cheating propensity and cruelty. The deer has put its faith in me, just as a good man who has a natural interest in good behavior, forgets the misbehavior of a cunning friend and puts his faith in him. Although I have proved faithless, will this deer return and place its faith in me. Vardimaraj was very noble and exalted, and therefore when the deer was absent from him, he thought himself unworthy to give him protection due to his attachment for the animal. He thought that the animal was as noble and exalted as he himself was. According to the logic of Atmava, everyone thinks of others according to his own transposition. Therefore, Maharaj Bharata felt that the deer had left him due to his negligence and that due to the animal's noble heart it would again return. That was 15 and 16. So here's the translation purport of Schumann 5 over 10, 5th canto, 8th chapter, 15th and 16th verse. By a translation purport by his divine grace Srimad Bhagavad by word Vyasadeva in the matter of the character of the Bharat Maharash so describing the symptom before, in the previous voice it said that Bhagat Maharaj would do his pujas and rituals and meditations. Sometimes he would interrupt just to see, is the deer all right? Where was the deer? This way he would be thinking a lot about the deer, spontaneously giving his blessings to the deer sometimes. So what was happening was gradually the attachment which was supposed to be transferred to Ka. Was being transferred to the deer. He had so many attachments as the emperor. He was the emperor of the entire world. He had his queen, he had his children, he had his kingdom. He had so many things. He left that all for meditating on Ka and becoming fully Ka conscious. And then without his awareness, he's becoming attached to this beer. It shows us how Maya is so strong. How he can get detached or attached in different ways. Especially since he was renouncing everything that was the most inappropriate. It's one thing if he was a young Vihasta just getting married. And okay, he'd be attached to his wife and family. And husband and family, whatever, depending if it was a lady. But the point is that he's already advanced in age. And he's designed himself to renounce everything. And he's living in this hermitage on the side of the river, in the forest. And instead he gets attached to the deer. So his attachment is coming ready spontaneously. What's the deer doing? Where is the deer? Sometimes the deer wouldn't come. And then he's lamenting, oh, what happened to the deer? Maybe it's because of my bad behavior. And put faith in me. And I didn't properly take care. Everybody's getting always like really over, over the hill, over the top, over what was needed. Babies are very enchanting. Even baby animals, you see baby cats, there's some cutes, baby foes. Somehow the bee and the deer are having accepting him like a parent. Because the dear mother had died. So then this natural kind of bonding is another, which is very beautiful. Very much in the moral goodness and some respect. Probably very enchanting for my certain types of modern. But from the strict spiritual point of view, it was the problem. Laws of karma are very strict. Whatever we get attached to that leads us to our next birth. So because he got attached to the beer, his next birth, he became the beer Sparrow. So how all that happened, it's explained here. You can see it was a really deep kind of attachment that was developing. With an emotional involvement with the deer. It wasn't just occasional, okay, let's take care of the deer. Let's help this. That's how it started within the develop, how it's developing, how we got so much involved with the deer. So that at the time of death, instead of thinking about Krishna, he thought about the deer. What are we going to think about at the time of death? That's what destination we get reciting. I know, but he gets in my Raj. He's preparing himself. He wants to prepare himself for death so he can be completely focused on Krishna and Taopa. So he can change the gears and everything so that now he's with his figure face down and push. There was one of my God brothers. He said he went to see his father who was on the deathbed and all the relatives were there. Everybody said, granddaddy, granddaddy, granddaddy, granddaddy. He said, don't worry, don't worry. You take care of the dogs, you take care of the cats, you take care of this. And he was great, you know, everything will be all right. And so he's like completely thinking about all the things. And then my God relates up and I gotta help my father just a little bit, try to help him. So I asked him, give me five minutes alone with my dad. It's once in my life, about five minutes alone. I talked to him with my last hand. So began came out. Then he told him, look at that, you're not going to die. You're eternal. The soul just wants to chant this prayer with me. It's for a blessing for you. And for a minute the father was like all the stress went away, became very peaceful. You just leave the bikes playing about reincarnation, just leaving and just think about God in the time of Dan. Meanwhile I was saying, what's he doing? Maybe they're signing a will or you know, taking all the inheritance or who knows, you know, what will sign Pow pow pow. Powder up fibers on your open the door. Everybody gets all stressed out, at least for one time in the chain. Hari Krishna. It's so difficult at that moment relieving the body. Everybody should be helping you remember Krishna said the guy's numbering his cats and dogs. So that's very dangerous. People don't understand it, the loss Here they say hell people and for parents it's very harsh. Doesn't really anymore. Why did Firearch you were such a great devotee? Why he had. Why he had. He got it a lot. But then the Krishna helped him, gave him remembrance. Even though it's a beer. He remembered his previous life as a human being. So next time he went to birth as a human again he could remember the temperance. He was ready for this mistake. So was this is the someone vibrant gradually and spontaneously became attached to the leader. It's not such a common thing, but sometimes people get very attached to their. To their pets. Went to Walmart to buy something. There was an announcement for it make a friend of greyhound. It was a big science people they get right after they're in Atlanta and watch her encouragement to their best friend was a cat to bring all the men to the camp. Just one with lawyers one is the cat lived. It was the cat's mummy. And then when the cat died. So for a while he was which is that cabinet we want to be attached to our humans and the Krishna. Why can't we just have a natural attachment to the Krishna where our mind goes to the Krishna. Boys and girls that are attracted to each other despite Hindi as in Boise girls you boy love this kind of thing. But it's very natural. You don't have that attraction. So why can't we have that natural connection. Sometimes it's very mechanical. So this is the burden of love. He gives some pretty graphic examples of what burden of love is to come. Just like a young mother is carrying a newly born baby. That sometimes it takes some burden. But we don't consider it a burden. So we do our devotional service. And devotion you won't feel it as a burden. They get spiritual mind feel so good about that. But sometimes they go to like the doldrums. They're sailing from this part of the ocean. Or there's no wind doldrums. You just the wind is there in the middle of the ocean. The latest but there's no way to move the fill in the sail. So you're going to start into some part of the ocean. Specifically follow the opens. You have to get into that area of the ocean. And it was very little wind. Takes a long time to get up. Sometimes boys they feel like I'm in the dolphins in the morning. And that's. That's very dangerous. Maya was making offering the things to be attached to. He was a Bharat. He had more affection what he was worth the bowl he was studying was actually in the ecstatic love of Krishna. He was meditating with Krishna into crying tears before someone had attached to the fear. And he got distracted from his original. Instead of crying to Krishna always crying to the fear. Where's my fear. Why don't you speak to some of the you need to get this practice. So it shows how careful we have to be. And I'm Krishna has to discern that I have the Lord here for so many years. I can do anything more proud of him. We have to be very very careful all the time. And especially if we say that we're not getting that enthusiasm we're not giving the things then that means that we're in some kind of spiritual trouble. Maybe we've been committing my shah. Therefore we lost the taste for championing and sermon. If you don't chant anywhere else to taste for service. Some people like to do service and that goes for a while. But not chanting somehow we need to stay. Was giving his presentation to the leaders. And he was an enthusiasm. That's the field of interest. Also said that the first favorable thinker if you don't have enthusiasm devotional to us that addiction much more vulnerable to the basics of one side. I think to do something which is a challenge for us sometimes. I said why are you this would be a challenge for my seniors. Something for them to do. That's actually such a huge project. There's so many things to do. There's nothing for anybody. University entrepreneurs exhibits a lot of things. They're not serving up to their capacity. We always have to pushing ourselves to be a little more serious. Imagine all oh, now the person gets a receiver. One of the things about so it is an ashram. Attempts to be much more in control of that from the outside. Then it's your own responsibility to give yourself. He describes that the four ashram them. They don't want to sit and watch TV on the air Priests counseling groups. So he has to try counseling groups. And they have their reports every week. There are seven wisdom. They have a report sheet. Why do they chant their job at the end of the day? If they chant it at a certain time they get so many points. They chant the radar all day. They get less points. The old point system. They have to accumulate so many points. So they have to fill out their daily sign on the chart. Turn to the crumbs type everybody in their congregation. They want to go on the yacht which are big festivals. They have to have a good apartment. So that's one of the navigation. Now we've also started some body issues for young people. Because one of their so getting inspired by the similarities. It also started for the initiative this way. It's adding a little bit of peer pressure through group pressure that the people support. Actually the idea of groups is that it gives a party in the universe here. Because there's more group program for them. That is reality that they're going to be active up to their maximum potential. You have to work better when you're under a little bit of pressure. And we're going to try a little harder than we just you know on our own. For the brahmachari. They also have a promise. They eat every day. Study the shastra for all we have to do this is total temple is maintained by the congregation Our finances management shall be in everything worship only the leading worship and certainly my preaching is done by the voluntary international the scriptures like monastic life interesting are unique in this kind of concept Again there are some truth if I want to be found to the bar and mars even consultants group is it all right. That's what acid is here There was nobody else telling me hey, what's the thing going on with you're here we all alone said dangerous for us. We're very secluded. So me and Aglue it's very easy to live in a city in the modern world of being very secluded. Nobody knows what you're doing. Nobody cares what you're doing. Nobody. Some people are committing suicide here in the west in the middle of the city. They feel lonely, right? It's a common feel lonely. They're with millions of people. They're lonely hairs around I was wired up to when I was a young seeker on the street in San Francisco. And then right within about 457 some guy pulls out a gun and charges somebody else's stomach and shoots him. I like it. You know, like I said people have been kind of squat by guys hanging in the ground. I said some people are I also didn't know. I didn't know what to do. I was seeing all these people at least in India if somebody gets shot people don't help them. Even in Iraq people Bob everywhere the second Ira but here in the west you know I didn't want this visiting foreign I lived for years we're trying to get groups together here. I got nine years old and they're going to have four groups in Boston and they're going to have eight night of December that's for plan now we have eight groups in Houston we got six groups in San Jose, North America everywhere in the different groups except how many groups we got in the land all these interactive activation their concert groups I want people a chance to sit down guys seem to work for them and all people ch 16 hours they count the groups for Chinese and the two people they got we got 88 groups wonderful day. Just a normal laptop for him printed out with little symbols all over the Vayner metropolitan area where they had some that was meeting regularly groups 30 some satsangs and that's it. They have two programs. They have a program on Saturday only for the Indians. They are Saturday program is one geared for the Western Indian slight so on Saturdays 90% Westerners I mean Indians 10% will be by themselves and. And on Sunday it's maybe 64 I think wants to do something. Everybody wears pants and shirts and just have a lot of practice where everybody goes in different programs. And then now we're less than graduates. You want to take it really easy. I heard there's a in Rocksford UK suburb of London. They tell me they have two meetings a week and one meeting is in gr one meeting is in Western coast. So then that way in Western really strong people for that. I guess it's more like when you get in the inner group he was discussing at the meeting. Just add Krishna. Just add Krishna. We're going to do something. Some radical things here. We have parts of North America today the Hindu community is the religious ethnic group in America. From other different poles that we can study. Indians are our national allies. Indians here tend to be one handed issue In India we preach the villagers. There's all villagers from Indian west here as well. Engineers, software engineers, businessmen, doctors, architects, administrators. They already had people. They all had auto lists in parents too. I went to one program used to be in Montana. We had this son had a rodeo and he had a program. They brought a nature from the army. They had some lady from Aman. Different people that brought you all the rest of the would have to have. We had groups. We had invocation in gathering Alhapa to encourage them to invite their western friends to each other. That way so we can increase our coverage to the Western people. Different instances we practically work in Santa Rama Sunnis on the Turko camp. She invited all the Western people. Now we're ready. Walmart used to be mainstream America. You know most of these were very simple kind of labor people in America who do you want to reach out to. But actually in America we have people that are interested in things that are very close to what we do. We have something to choose for discussion in Malaysia I told them what is trend association of the country. And so now you have five Iran cities had to do things and then stop doing that. So they joined the National Vegetarian Council. And over a period of time they were reacted and they got five or 12 seats on the National Council. And one the chairman was a Chinese gentleman. He was handing like a. Almost like a guru or some kind of spiritual leader. And he had 60,000 followers. They're all vegetarian. And he said if you go to the programs again we have vegetarians joining vegetarian clubs. Medicine ecology leading academic ecology. It's actually our philosophy that supposed to be in harmony with nature. About three months few people that look more in the world of witness. And then there's enough. I like us old. And some of them become an expert Buddhist books and Vedas and drawings. You probably Bengalis are just kind of like going around. And that's what the Christians they do. They send. I was reading some of their books. They send people to join. You know, bridge clubs, chess clubs, tennis clubs. They don't listen. Somewhat related. They just go something cold. Make friends with people and have peace with them. Just like Barb got attached to his ear. People. You guys ask your people. You make friends and somebody's your friend. There was a discussion mostly people today in the 2000s. They're looking to religion or to spiritual practices. Master less Angel. They're not interested in a big institution anymore. They're interested in relationships. Previously they were trying something and develop like a relationship way. But now they want relationship first and then fix with them in the relationship side and then go for the philosophy. So what happened was I didn't see this, but someone told me that they did a call of all the religions in North America, the Slavic which had the best philosophy, those best answers to all the questions. And Hare Krishna was one of the time. And then did a study which religions are known for being really healing, friendly and nice and being that he has here. People here are very nice. Welcome to all your visitors. And things like hydration way down the bottom. I can say the best philosophy. I can say they're trained out by like a sama discussion or swallow. People answer the phone, people call. Just do all the material stuff. Really nice. Good people, you know, must see. Well, this is part of our culture Atiti naya. We're supposed to anyway treat our guests as if they were incarnations of Mahony. Because there's some history of prana that sometimes Krishna came to somebody else's house in disguise as this ordinary blow. And just to see how he would the tree. And then later when he was treated this person wearing ice hospitality when he transformed his phone. Showing the actual mind. You never know who's running in the dark things. That's holy land all over now. That's what Indian government they're promoting. And for their tourism the teaching of Ireland that okay, this is our culture. Because the devastating for naturally their tourist nights people rip them off, steal their raids because they're coming. Some people don't go to India, because if you go to China, they change real nice. So now they're trying to train everybody. Treat the goodness of Malaysia. Now they got huge the government billboards all over the country tourism keep their guests nice. Some of the variety of Malaysian culture is that they have the Malaysia tourism boards in the local language. So it's not for the tourists. Sometimes in other languages. Trying to get the local people psyched out to treat the tourists nice because they're bringing the money. So now India's on a big campaign. It was on some newspapers, the new minister of tourism, some lady, I forget her name, she was able to bring up the tourism from 2 million to 2.5 million. It was almost a thing in one year. They invited all the Victoria's agents and then when they come and have a Pacific Circle meeting Delhi, they said, okay. The main thing we were all sharing with hotel. We like your thing but we like your audio what you're showing us. The main problem is your infrastructure. Sink this and that. Things. We need to see things from. Have somebody come in and do it like as if you were a guest. And then how. What's your question? Let me. How do you come in? Okay, see for us, these are the people. These are worship deities. The moral people come in and they just don't do person. They don't know. Someone has to guide them through it. Explain it. This is what they do now. Moving atoms. When they take people to the temple, it's like part of their palace and world tours. People see Kalpa on his. Yes. And get a little bit. You know those Americans that I just worship the human beings so much. Okay. The deity parents. I don't know people, they. But when they got to see Kalpa they were like a little bit put up. And so what they did is they put two displays of Prabhupada's books. All this knowledge. I like to think that you and children are actively thinking what is the experience of the people in this city temple. The idea the temple should be as a holy place especially for all the congregation for all that. This is a tirtha. It's a holy place. So people come here, they should know that tirtha experience. I think there are tirthas all over India. But the most wonderful experiences I had is where the priests are very like lead you to the pujas when you go on. This year we went to north and the Ganges puja. All the feasts. There's like special feast there that we want to do around the puja at the end of the day. But you know, okay, so one place they didn't ask for any permission. They just said if Varanasi wanted you to do around the puja yard and they had to sit down on the side of the genjis. And so then I said, okay, from Brahma down to the Medsa Titi. The Medsa name a lot of, you know, rising sign and constellation, everything. Today we're going to do all that. This was like a five star puja. Then they put in the hand like a blueberry, all kinds of. I was like. I was offered so many things. Thank you for watching our videos.
