Live lecture (Jaya Pataka Swami, Nov 24, 2005, Atlanta) focused on devotional ecstasy and practical temple service. The speaker emphasizes the special presence and mercy of community deities, responsibilities for seva and financial/volunteer support (named contribution tiers), and describes scriptural examples of ecstatic symptoms (tears, goosebumps, hair standing) from Śrīmad Bhāgavatam 5.17.2 (Dhruva Maharaj) and Lord Chaitanya’s pastimes. The talk includes vivid pilgrimage accounts of bathing in the Ganges, ritual practices (tarpana), and guidance on chanting and cultivating devotional love (mahabhava, prema).
Re awakened. We may not see that potency in the deity because we're not awakened yet. But when Prabhupada came here, he said these deities are so merciful. They're so merciful. He literally started to cry. Tears were pouring from his eyes and he was chanting the Paramakaruna Bahu, Duizana, Hitagora, Chandra. So we may or may not be able to recognize how merciful these deities are. We probably recognizing each authority. So these are very special deities. We also have Jaguna, Bala Devhajra, who are very blissful, genuine deities. Their smile touches the heart. And Radha Madan Mohan, who are the Pizza Devis of Panihati in India. They have come here. So we should be very thankful for their presence. And that way the Khurd. There's an opportunity for everyone to participate in that gratitude to the deities. Those who are initiated, they can worship the deities, take a turn during the week, during the month, a day in the month, the end of it, whatever takes some time. When they come first, they do some seva. These are the community deities. As they go around visiting homes a day until 12 visits on. We see everyone has little deities that they worship to some standards. But these are the community deities and Prabhupada said that they are special. Everyone has a responsibility for the maintaining and serving the community deities. It's not an ordinary thing. Those who are not initiatives, they can also come and do some seva. In some temples they have the name of the need. Like in South America and Santiago they have the Gorni Thai deity. So they have the Gorni Thai seva club where people offer so many hours a week or a month to do seva. So you can do seva by coming and doing making garlands or fixing the plumbing. It's all needed. You know, the Dilies also need water. Drains have to be cleared. Program for contributing on a monthly basis something to the dilies. Starting $31 which is low standard. 51 Mathura Sevak 101 Dwarka Sevak 201 Vrindavan Sevak 501 Atmani Lena 1001. If you go beyond that then you can specify or lower than anything to specify. These are already named Sevas. Capital was maintaining by like sending people out to raise funds. We have a big primarily for more productive, more direct preaching type of things. So we could do that. If the temple is maintained, we can show our gratitude and thankfulness to the temple. If everybody signed up, up to their capacity, their Capacity was zero. And they could give time, then give time. If they can give time and money, then give both. But put into action a little bit of our gratitude that we have deities. We have a temple and there's some overheads here. Malabada Pru for many, many years been struggling to pay the mortgage and to fix the place up. And now Veda Sarpu is. And his team is concentrating on this. And they're coming up with these different schemes. So let's give him support from our side. We're earning. We owe something to Krishna. The only way we can show our gratitude. Having deities is something very special. But deities are. Living clothes get changed, their tea wigs get burnt, their flowers, their garlands are put on. The electricity for their lights has to be paid. The food for the people that do all this service has to be. So many overheads are there. So everybody can. Plus parliament said it's not only. I mean you can't. You have to have the gardens and everything has to be all the ladies. The guest houses, the ashrams, bathrooms, everything should be up to a high standard. Save us whatever your capacity. I think there's already how many people are contributing now. But show of hands. You don't know who they are. They're sitting right here, most of them. The names are here. You can see. You get your name right. And anyway Krishna knows. Okay, you're helping. That's how we purify our Lakshmi. If we're working in Rahabs where it's very poor. But even given 50% of what he earned, the profits for worshiping the Ganges. So someone calculated. I will. I give 5%. 10 people sign up. Maybe I'll get a blessing too. He'll hand the forms out if you want. You don't got a confidence. Once you go on a piece of the paper, they can put their name on it. We're very thankful to you for taking that risk. To allow us to install Shushirado and tap that my feet. They gave me the mercy to be able to act as a humble instrument. Sam. It's Sam. 10 minutes. 10 minutes. Clock sticks right now watching Sam. Sa it is not Sa it what it? Samariya. Harsh. Asleep. Sam. Ram. Samiya. Ram. Ram. Veena. Ritamala. Bashka. Kalaya. Vivya Vivya. Roma Pulakatulako. Dunati Parama. Narena, Srishar Vivarti. You could understand the Sanskrit. Roma Pulak. A kulak, a symptom of ecstasy in the body. Because Bengali is 80, 90%, 60%. Duva Maharaj, the most famous son of Maharaj Uttanapah Uttanapada is known as the most exalted devotee of the Supreme Lord because of his firm determination and a securing devotional service. Are you taking audio? What is it? For the pictures I just go to. You don't have audio tape in? I don't have the macro. I don't have a micro. Actually, you put it up. Knowing that the sacred Ganges water washes the lotus feet of Lord Vishnu, Dhruva Maharaj, situated on his own planet to this very day, accepts that water on his head with great devotion. Because he constantly thinks of Ka very devoutly within the core of his heart, he is overcome with ecstatic anxiety. Tears flow from his half open eyes and eruptions appear on his entire bondage. So here's tears, ecstatic anxiety, hair standing on end, goose pimples. Such things, when a person is firmly fixed in devotional service to the supreme personality of Gaudavi, is described as Veeravrata. Fully determined, such a devotee increases his excellency and devotional service more and more. Thus, as soon as he remembers Lord Krishna, Lord Vishnu, his eyes filled with tears. This is a symptom of a Mahavana Vata Dhruva Maharaj maintained himself in that devotional ecstasy and R Caitanya Mahbrabhu also gave us a practical example of transcendental ecstasy when he lived at Jagannath Puri. His pastimes there are fully narrated in Chaitanya Charantharita Bhakalwan is fish. This answer. This was the fifth Canto 17th chapter, second verse of the Srimai Bhagavatam, the descent of the river Ganges. How many were here yesterday? For the quest says how left foot entered the universe, shell pierced the hole in the covering and the pure water of the colossal ocean entered the universe as the Ganges river, washing the lotus feet of the Lord which are covered with reddish powder. That's where the Ganges are a little brownish reddish. The water of the Ganges acquired a very beautiful pink color. Every living being can immediately purify his mind of material contamination. By touching the transcendental water of the Ganges. Did his water remain ever pure? Because the Ganges it is one is going to appear. Because the Ganges directly touches the lotus feet of the Lord before descending within this universe, she is known as Vishnu Padi. Later she receives other names like Janavi and Bhagirathi. After 1000 millenniums, the water of the Ganges descended on Dhruva Loka, it's a big distance from the edge of the universe to Dhruva Loka thousand millenniums. Then from Dhruva Loka therefore the unlearned sages described Dhruva Lopa to be Vishnu Pada situated Vishnu lord, Vishnu lord's feet. And here when it's there, the Dhruva, he's an ecstasy bathing. We have our Ganya safari where we go camping, out on boats, contending with. Done many times and yes, thank you. Well, for 10, 12 days we're on the Ganges bathing, worshipping, drinking, coaching. It's another dimension where you get Trulla Loka is living on the Gantius all the time. He's every day bathing and taking the water on his head, feeling ecstatic symptoms. I was thinking how hard hearted I am that not feeling so much ecstasy all the time. This is. Dhruvamar is such a great. It's called Mahabhagavat Bhagavad means devotee comes from Bhagavan Bhagavan Bhagavad. And a Mahabhagavad is a great devotee, someone who's very much awakened. So whenever Dhruva Maharaj thinks about Vishnu and he feeling this ecstatic symptoms, tears coming in his eyes, hair standing on him, eruptions on his body. So he is a very ecstatic devotee. When we're at the Ganges, I don't know. It's something very special to the last time we went from Mayapur to Sagar island which is where the Ganges meets the ocean and she goes down into the lower planetary system. She actually doesn't mix with the ocean. The external water appears to mix but the sacred flow goes down to another dimension. So you don't see the Ganges coming, but the Gantis comes and the higher dimension enters into this plane and the Himalayas comes down. This year we went to where the Yan was last year 2005 Safari. We went to where the Ganges is officially called the Ganges on this planet, which is the confluence of the Alakanand and the Vairati at the Vela Prayag. We were there for this year. That was amazing. But I was so scared because I hear the flow of water coming down from the. It's very, very fast. We had 150 devotees. I didn't want to lose anyone. If they go downstream, that's it, you know, it's like Lucia, Bhagavatamita's sister. She was so ecstatic. She went in 19 nine times. If you go in, it's so Cold. You can't stay in more than a few seconds and she'll come out and she'd feel like separation from the Ganses. Go back how many times you went? Nine times. So trying to keep everybody careful and have them hold on to the ropes. There's guide ropes. That is the. The flow is so fast. Freezing right from the glaciers and the Goma. But it was so big, even spiritually, and everybody was. At the end was just like so blissful. Hard to explain. You can go on other polar bear clubs or something, but it's not the same. You get physically invigorated. But this is. This is something so special with the Ganges. So last year we went up the Ganges of Prayag and Varanasi and all those holy places and Karma Prayag. A year before, a couple years before, we'd gone down to the southern. Some of the times we went from Kanai Natshala to Mayapur. One time we couldn't. We wanted to get to one particular God, but it was already dark and he couldn't find it. There's no lights and even on these boats there's no lights. They don't like to lose lights because they like to see the moonlight. Just they're calling out, hearing the echoes. And it's real amazing kind of way they navigated the river. You were taking us to Goraki Shoka, Baji's best place. And then it's just like. I won't say we're lost because it's one where we can't really get lost. But it was like we didn't know exactly where we were. So we're calling out, where are we? And I said, you know, where's this? And. And they kept, you know, people all over the place, long further, just down the river, you know, we kept going everywhere. They said, ah, just a little further. Finally we were at this place which is the. Where Nithyananda's daughter, who is the personification of the Gyanches, she lived there. And there's her ruins of her ashram. And so it left something very special. But here we were out in the Ganges and we went to the Ganges Ashram. So I said, okay, let's camp here. And we just pulled over there and that turned out to be all. So the closest route to Krishnavaska, I guess, which was six, seven kilometers in there. Yeah, in tractors. We went on the back of the tractor and some trailer. The roadies are bouncing around on the big road adventure. But for me, Ganges is so special. This Year, just every year I go to the Mayapur for the Bhishma Panchak. That's a festival we just had. Now, from the last Purnima church to the last Purnima. And every day you go to the Ganges and take a bath and you perform tarpana, which is a special ceremony offering Ganges water to Bhishma Deva, who's the son of the Ganges. So you do this. Prayers to the Ganga, prayers to Bhishma Dev findings, fasting, the fruits of groups, worshipping Radha and Krishna, offering lamps in the evenings. A lot of things to do anyway for month of nominal. But one of the highlights is we get hundreds of devotees all going down. Ladies on one God, men on the other. And before reading our tarpon, our prayers to Vishwa being is Vishwa Pancha. And you have to reverse your Brahman thread to the other side, put water in your hand, offer the temple of the mountain and pour the water to the right. It says that Vishnu Dev, he was a lifelong Brahmachari. So he doesn't have aputraya, he has no sun. So because. But he was living like a grihasta, kind of. He was still a warrior and he was a grandfather. He didn't take the Minau's daughter, but he had. So usually when you're Grihasta, your son or daughter, you want them to perform the strat for you, the ceremonies they carved on the shroud after you die to give you spiritual boosts. Maybe you're facing some difficulties in your life now because your previous children are not sending you any boost packets, you're just doing it alone in this lifetime. So the Vedic system is trying to get help from the Pythyas and your descendants. So one of the help they can do is if they offer you Ganges water, that's like a real big spiritual boost. So that's called tarpana, offering Ganges water to the forefathers. If they're heavenly planets, it may extend their stay there. I don't know how many you is for a long time. Or if they're in some hellish condition, it may save them from that. You know, suddenly they're on the operating table. The doctor says, no hope. This is a goner, you know, wow, what happened? Someone just did of a ton. So all the Grihasas, they want that their children should be really good devotees and perform tarpana and Srat every year on the anniversary of their death. And that's said it's reasonable for Grihasa to one that's Ka conscious. Because as a grihasta, I may not be perfect in all my duties. So pointing to the kids, tell them what they're gonna do. Hopefully first, if you get back to Gadha, that's the best thing. In case you don't miss. In case you miss it, don't make it, then you got a second chance from the kids. So. But Bhishma had no kids because he went back anyway. So it's just almost rhetorical. But I was just thinking it's like when you're doing it. Here's a devotee who sacrificed so much for Krishna. He never told a lie. That's why he got a lie. He made a promise to Duryajo, I'll stay with you. And later, of course, sometimes it would be better to stay with Krishna and tell a lie. But he never told a lie. That was his moral, very high standard. She got on the wrong side the way things worked out. But other than that, he was a pure devotee of Krishna in every respect. But he must devote to Krishna. He never, never did the wrong. His inaction is maybe the biggest fault he had. Sometimes he didn't do anything, but otherwise he never also did anything against the principles. He was always very much attached to Krishna and left his body seeing Krishna. But technically he had no wonder to perform time. From material point of view, he had no one performed just Ta vinh. So here we have hundreds of devotees and all over the world, thousands of people performing Ta Mana for Vishnu Day. And over the US and over the millennials. I thought, it's just like Sri Krishna takes care of his devotees. You sacrifice in heaven and children in my thing. Now I wish if we had without kids, who's going to perform my Targum? But Krishna arranged that he was surrendered to me. So I had thousands of people offering vinam gishmay. But we were so fortunate in my effort that we live next to the Ganges, so we can bath every day. But the people that live next to the Ganges, they rarely bath every day. They take it for granted. There's people that come from far away. Oh, the Ganges. Let's take a bath. And they go. But people live there. I can bathe anytime. So they don't bathe. Just like we had to bathe every day. So there's like a fight, but otherwise smell like everyday. Me always, especially as Kona. I have some disciples that bring me out buckets, pots of Ganges water. So many in the morning, right before a cold bucket of Gan. So Yeah. You can also take the Arid in the Padma Purana, vice versa. That you chant Ganga loudly. But also three times. And also to get the effect of mating in the Ganges. So when you take your shower in the morning, you can show now Ganga, Ganga, Ganga. Like a mantra. Math of the Gansas. It only works within a hundred thousand Yojanas. How many planets? It's 800,000 miles. So it should be so. Right. We're far within that range. So here Prabhupada is talking about symptoms of Mahabharmala. Our Lord Chaitanya showed these ecstatic symptoms. Caitanya Chandamita describes what Chaitanya was doing. The Brathi Yatra. He would dance before Jagannath. Sometimes he would. He'd faint and the Tinanda Babu and grab him, catch him sometimes. This ecstasy Lord Shaitanya has called Mahabhava. Mahabhava is. Bhava is ecstasy. Mahabhava is like super ecstasy. Only Radharani, Lord Chaitanya and who else in this world. They're the only ones who show this Mahabhara. We can't. These are things you can't imitate. Like sometimes Lord Chaitanya's limbs will become disjointed. They jump into the game, into the ocean. Thinking it was the Jamuna. Jamuna is a blue darkness color color. Sometimes she's called Kalindi because she's dark colored. Ganges is pink color. So at the confluence of the Jamuna and the Ganges. You know where that is? We bathed there last year to fill all the devotees to bathe in Harangue. That's considered the most special bathing place. Confluence. So you see the Ganges coming pink and the Chamunae coming blue. And the tubing. It was like that also in daylight. Alakananda was very light blue. And the Va Girati was pinky. Then everything became pink. Pink takes over. So God is bathing there. But the ocean is not pink. Ocean is purple. So the ocean looks more like the Kalindi. So Lord Chaitanya would see the ocean and the moonlight. He think about Jamuna and fallen ecstasy and run and jump into the Jamuna in his mind. But it was actually the ocean he swept out to sea. Sometime a fisherman caught him in his net. And when the fisherman touched his body, he got ecstatic symptoms. He started crying and shivering in his body and hair standing in. So he thought that I caught a ghost in my net. Of course you don't catch ghosts with my nest. Obviously he didn't have too much of a ghostbusters. And he went Back to Shar. And he's there crying. And all the devotees are looking for Lord Chitanias, his fisherme crying and chanting. And they said, what happened? They said, touched their ghost. And they take, possess me. Well, if a ghost possesses you, you wouldn't be chanting. Are you fishing? Well, I know how to exorcise people from ghosts. Stand up, you're looking. I order the ghost to leave you. Pow, pow, pow. Give three slaps. Okay, you're all right now. Ghost is gone. So tell me what happened Then he said how there was this big thing, you know, he's mad. He touched it and it entered his body. And he felt all this symptom. He's still standing like this. I think that was Lord Chitan. No, I see. Lord Chitan is beautiful. This horrible house. So where is it? Over there, the net. So they untangle Lord Chaitani from the net. It's all like elongated. He turned pale being in the water for so long. They put a cloth down on the sand, put his body. Then they start chanting. Kirtan started to come back together. And all the bones started coming in, started to rejoin. And then Lord Chaitanya was in like total internal consciousness. He came into what was called intermediate, kind of half in, half out. And he was telling them, like, now I'm seeing Radha and Krishna in the gardens of Vrindava. I'm gathering flowers for them. And there's so many gopis there. And they're all serving. He's sharing whatever he's seeing with them. And then, then finally, if he goes from this kind of half in, half out and comes into the external consciousness. Wait a minute. So this kind of spiritual madness in lolaka described as Mahabhav 6, Goswami, is also sometimes short, pretty intense ecstasy for Lord Krishna dancing and running in Vrindavan. Hey, Krishna. Hey, Radha, where are you? But only Lord Chaitanya, God to this total unique level. Recently, before that was Mano Nupuri, then when Radharami was present. Shiloh, who go into some pretty extreme ecstatic situations. Devotees, they may feel not to that level, but to this. There's this level called lava, which before Prema were these eight symptoms. We can manifest any one or all eight. And sometimes, even though one may not be yet on the level of Baba, but just because of some special association or special mercy of what she tell you. When they feel a little ecstatic symptom, maybe tears come in the eyes, or maybe the hair stand on end, or maybe the voice chokes up or they start to laugh. Sometimes it's like what's called just a sneak preview, like a little glimpse of some ecstatic symptoms. When the things happen and it's like completely beyond the control of the mind. It just happens automatically. Shouldn't be something staged or forced. Should be something that just kind of erupts, arises in one's consciousness. Then that's what's considered to be very auspicious and a natural ecstatic symptom. In the Bible states these are more like. This describes just like in the ocean where you see the waves, where there's big swells and waves. So it's superficially visible, but it may not be so deep. The next level, which is Prema, which is pure love, is like a tsunami. It may not show or may show externally, but the depth is so deep it goes right to the core of the heart. So someone may not be able to recognize the person who's in pregnant because it's not just the external symptoms, but it's very profound, affecting their life errors and everything. Saint Dhruva Maharaj, he was, I guess in this constant state of ecstatic symptoms like that. So many of Mount Chaitanya's devotees, they were in this state of spiritual ecstasy. People want to be happy in the material world, but. But what Chaitanya showed that like in America, the part of the Constitution in the United States is pursuit of happiness. He showed a level of happiness which is off the charts. It's just like. And all his followers, they also experience different levels of these ecstatic symptoms. So that's the devotees, they're always anxious. Everybody's anxious to be happy. It's purest pious spiritual happiness which is all encompassing and. And incomparable. The Buddha attracted people with his beauty and his peacefulness. The word Chaitanyas attracts people with his ecstasy and beauty, his ecstasy also peaceful. As devotees practice their devotional service, we have to deal all the time with our mind. Someone may you experience a little flash of some spiritual bliss, some ecstasy. Then the mind immediately gets proud. Oh, look here, you must be a Mahabhagma or something. You just experience some blindness. You just like pops your bubble and you go and you crash down because your mind is thinking all these kind of mundane, selfish things which are egoistic. And the only time when you feel happiness is when you make ka happy. This process of material happiness is sense gratification. You want to give some sensual stimulus to your senses. And that happiness of the senses has beginning and end, creates material attachments. When it's not available, then you feel unhappy, which is not Satisfying. Just like people who are addicted to anything, cigarettes or whatever, when they can't have it, they're like, I need a drink, I need a smoke, I need a this, I need a that. There's so much anxiety, which is not an ecstatic symptom. I saw some guy going through withdrawal from heroin in Malaysia, was visiting the hospital for a checkup. They've got this guy in a stretcher and he's screaming and writhing in pain. I said, what's that? My goodness. Oh, he's a drug addict. In Malaysia, they become go through cold turkey. They don't give them methadone, they don't give them. Make them go cold turkey. Withdrawal symptom. They think it's going to teach them better than that. Anyway, no comment. But I never saw somebody exhibiting so much suffering. It was not ecstatic for sure, but it was really painful. And where if one is attached to Ka, even when you're feeling separation, that's also ecstatic. The people that develop an attachment to Ka on the spiritual platform. And then when they're not for them, they're feeling a distance from Ka. They're also feeling that desire to be with Ka increasing. And that's also another kind of ecstatic symptom called love and separation Vipramba. So the way we make Ka happy or we make Krishna happy by serving him, by serving his devotees. Then when Krishna feels happy because we're part of Ka, we feel spiritual bliss. So what we're doing is giving to Ka and we're getting ka experience of Ka feeling happy with us. And that comes into our consciousness in very standard loving feelings for Krishna. So. So it's a totally different. One is trying to get something for the senses, which are very limited vehicles. The other Krishna has unlimited senses. We're serving Ka senses and we're serving God in this way. We're feeling loving symptoms for him. Loving ecstatic symptoms. So Lord Chaitanya exhibited it and he showed that this is the symptom that is described. The director of devotion. And devotees can awaken their symptoms also by rendering pure devotional service. Even more, we get involved in the sense gratification without any kind of ignorance that it kind of blasts into our feeling of ecstatic love for Ka. The more that we are focused on purely serving Ka, the easier it is to awaken the loving feelings for Krishna. But everything is done by more griefly, very quickly by remembering Chaitanya Mahabharamityananda. It's their mercy that this ecstatic symptoms awaken. I met a man that wasn't chanting hare Krishna for 26 years. But he never chanted Lord Chaitanya's names. He didn't feel any ecstasy. He asked me what to do. I told chanted Ro Chaitanu's names. I gave him the Bakshatan to mantra. Three months later he came running up to me, fell on my feet. He said what mantra you gave me? Now I chant Hare Krishna. I feel so much ecstasy. You see, because many people Hare Krishna alone is very slow acting if he commit apparatus. But by chanting of the Panchata Mantra. The chanting of Hare Krishna works very quickly. By Lord Chitt at his mercy we can feel spiritual bliss. Sometimes encouraged, sometimes devotees, they get appreciated. They chant, they experience different levels of bliss. They get busy in the day to day life. And it becomes really hectic in this material world. Especially with kids and work and studies so many different things. And then it's very easy to reduce the chanting or stop chanting and then start to lose the taste for devotional service. Sometimes association with a devotee or some festival awakens our devotional enthusiasm. Again the weekend regularly keep chanting. Somehow or another it's a big struggle in the material world. And especially chant Manchatatva Mantra before we chant Hare Ka and try to do all the services we do in a sense of surrender that we're doing this not for my own ego or for my own. But I'm doing it just to please Krishna, please my guru and please the previous Acharya. So in that time that's our sacrifice Kali Yuga to serve in spite of this horrible situation that is there in the material world. If we had the eagerness for Krishna today you can tell us Muhammad, what was the eagerness of people to get a goodbye? Thank you for watching our videos. Be be sure to subscribe to our channel.
