2006 || Arrival Address || Dāmodaradeśa #JayapatakaSwamiArchives

Recorded arrival address by Jaya Pataka Swami (with contributions from Shiva and others) focused on the Rath Yatra festival: its rituals (Gundicha cleaning, Snana Yatra, moving the deities and chariots), historical and devotional pastimes related to Lord Chaitanya and King Pratapa Rudra, and practical notes about organizing Rath Yatra at Damodaraśeṣa. The speaker shares personal memories (notably a 1970 visit to Puri), describes temple sites and ceremonies (56 daily preparations offered at Jagannath Puri), and discusses local event planning (Rath Yatra in Damodaraśeṣa / Calcutta, original Puri date noted as 27 June). Tone is devotional, instructional, and logistical.

Sam. Ram. Ram. I Ram. Ram. Ram. Ram. You.
Did you all do the cleaning today? Clean your heart to Saika. That's very good. House cleaning. Heart cleaning. When the Lord is going to come from the main temple to Gundicha then everyone cleans the Gundicha. Lord Caitanya had a special pastime where he cleansed the Gunjita temple with his associates. They carried. First they swept. They picked up pieces of stones and different kinds of twigs, leaves. Then from there they swept the dust. Then they washed with water. Then afterwards they scraped out the dirt and the cracks of the stones, the marble, the granite. And they have a meeting. Was kind of rough cracks inside. Maybe some dust was there that cleaned that out. So the temple became as clean, it said, as clean as Chaitanya Mahprabhu's mind. So that's one. Usually we have. If we have a temple, then we do temple cleaning. On the day before Rath Yatra to remember the Gundi Chamarjana we could have done a cleaning for the Sindhi of ceremonial hall. Or go to the Shrinathi Monday and clean it. We did a cleaning of the Regent's home. That was our Gumicha Marjana. That's our Gundicha. Where is Lord Jagannath? Whose house?
Samuel.
You cross the path of my vision. The devotees See Jagannath Jagannath 15 days before Rath Yatra normally has a bath called Snam Yatra. And all the devotees bathe him. And he gets so over bathed that he catches a colt for 15 days. No one can see him. In the day of Rath Yatra he comes visiting like that. There's so many different things connected to Rathyat Church. When they move. What did you tell? When they moved Jagannath from his temple to the chariots. It's a very majestic ceremonial procession right there. Jagannath goes down the stairways, step by step on big pillows. And when he hits the pillows, pow. It explodes. And the stuffings fly in the air. The air from the pillow cannot escape, so it explodes.
The pillow.
They have. First Balaram comes, then Subhadra, then Jagannathi. In 1970 I went to India and there was no Iskcon temple there. So I thought, let me go to see Rath Yatra and Jagannath Puri. So with Ashutananda I went to Jagannathatra in Jagannath Puri. Now I go to the Rathyatri in Calcutta. This Prabhupada ordered me to make it the biggest Rathyatra in the world. At least I had to go there. But I don't know if it's the biggest.
Yeah.
We have a nine day festival in Calcutta. We feed about. But 1970, I can see the radiation. This year he's going to Jagannapuri for the radar. Some devotees are going to join the Yatra and Puni Calcutta. They're trying to the energy indoor stadium so that it'll be something better than previous years. So when they move Jagannath, they put a wave, they put a rope around his feet and rope around his waist and they move forward. His feet move forward his waist. So he's kind of walking. And then they have, before Balaram, they have a big white feather that goes 15ft high, 5 meters high in the air, and then moves. So in the distance you may not see Balaram, but you can see the feathers moving in front on each side they have maybe 100 people, 200 people in total, fanning big chamars. And then in front of them they have twice as many people beating gongs. There'll be 400 people beating gongs, 200 on each side. And they have very big gongs with sticks. And they beat their gongs all exactly in unison. Boom, boom, boom, boom. And they dance and they beat the boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, Boom, boom. So 1970, I can't forget. You can hear that sound for kilometers. 400 people. Meaning they've gone exactly as you listen. Very powerful. So Jagannath is moving, he's moving, Balaram is moving. Really amazing when they move. There's a ramp in the front of the rock and they moved the didi up this ramp, pushing him, pulling him with the ropes. When I was there, then Balaram, his rope slipped and he started sliding down the ramp. And the Pujaris were like little. They were like just one third the size of Balaram. And they were trying to push up and he's crushing on them and the whole crowd starts shouting, oh, no. And then one Pujari climbed on the back of another another and there's fifty hundred, two hundred Pujari pushing, pushing. Somehow they got the rope again and pulled him up. It's quite an amazing thing. This is how they move, these huge deities. They're so much bigger than the Pujaris. Even the Pujaris are special Pujaris for moving the daily. I heard recently Radanath Swami was telling that he was at 1 Rath Yatra and Jagannath slipped and fell on his side on the ramp. So then Pujaris couldn't move him they're trying in different ways to move. Then the announcer said, jagannath, this is not the time to take rest. Everybody's waiting for you to do rath yaksha. Please get up. Then he got up. So it's a unique. Not so formal like in South India. They also have rath yatra. But this is so huge. The deities and the raths are so big that it's a little.
Unique.
It's a rath ceremony like they have in other places. But it's a bit more spontaneous, I would say in some respects. The time of Lord Chaitanya. Lord Chaitanya Presley was there at the Radh Sahib and he watched the king Pratapa Rudra Maharash inaugurate the rath yatra. And one of the ceremonies to inaugurate is to do what? Who knows? Sweeping. Sweeping? Sweeping what? Off his clothes? What? Sweeping the road. Why the potter? So why the king runs out of servants. No one to do the job. Why does the king do it? Why does the king have to sweep the road? The king has a lot of devotion. Any other idea? He wants to become purified. The servant of the supreme Lord. So do servants do menial things for their master? What do you think? So he role model others can follow. So he is showing Hana?
Yes. Indian one.
Indian one. This king, he could not see Lord Chaitanya personally. No private audience was allowed to the king. He was forbidden. The Lord Chaitanya was taking the role of a very, very strict sannyasi. He said, don't want to associate with materialistic people. He said in a kingdom the king is the most materialistic person him. Because he tends to have too much material opulence. So may affect his sannyasi. So he thought maybe I shouldn't be with him. But of course, this king was a very pious king. Just like many kingdoms have very pious kings. This king was very pious. He was a pious ruler. He was a devotee ruler just like here in UAE.
And.
But following the Vedic tradition. He was very much wanting to see Lord Chaitanya. But he was being tested by Lord Chaitanya. But you can't see me. So he thought I'm the most unfortunate person in my whole kingdom. Every one of my subjects can see Lord Chaitanya. Only me is prohibited. And the only one thing I want is to have Darshana. Lord Caitanyakhanava. His desire to be with Lord Caitanya was so intense. At one point he thought maybe I should just take my life. That then some of the ministers and Leaders, devotees, senior devotees approached Lord Caitani. Do something so he doesn't remain depressed. So Lord Chaitanya gave a gift, a chudar, a wrap to his son. And had the son taken and given to his father. So he would have some hope. But all this changed when Lord Chaitanya saw the king sweep the road. Then he had a change of heart. And he's not such a materialistic ruler. He's a devotee. He's humble. I had to give him the mercy. How many want the mercy of Ka? How many want the mercy of Lord Chaitanya?
No.
How many know the secret? The secret is serve Ka. And he will attract Lord Chaitanya. If you serve Ka. Nicely humble service. Like Lord Pratapura to serve Krishna. And therefore Lord Chaitanya wanted to bless him. If you serve Krishna as devotee, Krishna wants to bless you. If you serve Krishna, Krishna as devotee wants to bless you. It's reciprocation. You want Krishna's mercy, Serve the good, serve the Vaishnava. You want the Vaishnava's mercy, serve Krishna in a very humble way. So then Lord Chaitanya start giving mercy to King Pratap Ritra. You know what kind of mercy he.
Got.
To pull the rods. More than that. He already did that. He already cleaned the bed. Yes. That was the biggest mercy. He massaged Lord Chaitanya's lotus. Before that, from his palace top, he could see Lord Caitanya dancing in seven forms. In the seven different kirtan parties of his devotees. Now when you watch some big event, they have multiple video cameras. Instant replay. Like for the Mundial football game. They'll have instant replay. But in those days there was no video camera, no replay. So each party could only see their own party. They couldn't look up and see where's the other party. So they could see in their party, Lord Chaitanya was dancing. How merciful the Lord is. He sits with our party. He was in all the parties. He had multi form. Pratap Rudra Maharaj had the divine vision to see it. Then near the latter part of the Radh, Yatra of Jagannath stops to have a lunch at Viprasana. And everybody offers their offerings. Then Lord Chaitanya with his associates went into a garden and rested. Lord Chaitanya was lying down on a stone slab. In the shape cooling down. Then Bharta Bhutta Maharaj came there. Not dressed like a king. No royal dress, no helmets, no crowns, no silken cloth. Wearing simple white dhoti. Like a Vaishnava with tilak. Where is your Tilak? How do you expect to massage Lord Chaitanya's Lord's feet if you don't have tea, mount. Many boys have some do not. So he wore his tea lock, his cheddar, his dhoti. Nobody could recognize this was the royal king. He looked like a Vaishnava king. Always has, you know. So much opulent dress. Many ministers. He came alone. No bodyguards, no ministers, no indic camp. No security. No Z class security in India. You light some vip, they got Z class. Z class. Very heavy. Machine guns all over the rooftops. Dogs smelling for bombs. These things were not needed. The ruler himself could go Princess of Aishnava and ask permission. Can I massage the feet of the Lord? Because he's a holy man. Lord Chaitanya is more than holy person. He's holy. Supreme person. Come as a devotee. But he went there and he started to massage and sing the Bhajans of the Gopis. From 10th camp to Bhagavatam. And this move, Lord Chaitanya so much. He said, I don't know. He sat up, he said, I don't know who you are. But you're giving me these beautiful verses from the Shemad Bhagavatam. So I want to repay you. But I have nothing. I'm a poor mendicant. I don't have money, I don't have house. I don't have anything to give you. So let me give you a good hug and embrace. And he embraced the king dressed as a Vaishnava. I don't know who you are, he said. So he didn't embrace the king. He just embraced his Vaishnava. Didn't know who he was. So this way, by sweeping the road, King Prachar Rudra got to Mercy. Mercy. Sometimes we may think, let the others do the cleanup. I'm going to go eat my Prashada. We may be missing out on the biggest mercy. Sometimes they're very humble. Service gives the most mercy. Once there was a devotee cleaning the temple. And Prabhupada stopped and told the devotee, when you clean the temple, you clean your heart. Of course, all of your hearts are very pure. And there will be no materialistic thoughts that ever come into mind. But for some of us, we need to sweep the temple to clean the heart. So that pure thoughts will always come into mind. How many of you like to clean the temple sometime? How many of you been to Jagannath Puri? Quite a few. Maybe 20% how many of you been on Parikrama? I'm Jagannath Puri Bhakti Purushatam Swami is arranging a Bikrama now every year. What was the date? Maybe at the end of Kartik right after Bheeshma Panchak or something. We can find out from him but he's the expert. He's born in Jagannath Puri. Mayapur Vrinavan is known as Rajada Mayapur is Gora Mandal and Navadig Dham and Shanghai Puri is known as Rishotam Dam Also Sikh Kshetra. Shri Kshetra says that from the ocean the conch shells came on the shore and the dust of the conch shells made this holy land of Jagannath Puri. So it's known as Sri Chatra because these conchals are especially from the hand of Lakshmi Devi. So this is the land of opulence. 56 preparations are offered a day. Chapatna Bog Sometime our restaurants offer Chapana boat. They also offer.
Bombay.
Every Sunday they offer but nobody can eat even 56. They just take some. There's 56 are there they'll take 20, 10, 15. Zagannatha Supreme Lord so you can eat 56 preparations every day.
Day.
There'S the temple of Gundicha in temple Jagannath day Jagannath stays all year long in his temple. But once a year he goes to Gundicha on the main road. Then there are other temples connected to Lord Chaitanya near Gundicha there's one Narashima temple. Shanta Narashimha says the Mughal raiders who came when they saw this Narashima they.
Came peace.
And they stop fighting. So Lord Narashanka Dev has different forms. He can inspire fear or he can inspire peace. Shantanasamh. Then there's the Indra Dumna Sarovar. Indra Dumna Maharaja, Emperor of the world. He dug this holy lake for bringing water to the Lord. Then there's Makunda Sarova, Markandeya Rishi's father Makonda. He had a lake. There's a famous Shiva there. The father was told. The father and mother prayed and they said they could have a son but he would only live nine years. So it's up to them whether they want him or not. So they took their chance. No nine years of son is better than no son. In the ninth year Yamura came to get the son. The parents were all depressed. Then they said. Then the son said why everyone's so sad today? Said Today you're going to die. Yamura is going to take you. They told what the prediction was. So then he went hung down to the Shiva linga. So by Shiva's mercy then Shiva blessed him to live for so many days of Brahma nine years. And how many days of Brahma can.
Fit.
Samarkandi Rishi is quoted in the Srimad Bhagavatam. Many pastimes happened with him. He was also present. He gave many instructions different parts of the Srimad Bhagavad with so his temple that Shiva likna he held on to is in Jagannath Puri. And there's a big lake called the Rendras are over where the Jagannath goes to Chandan Yatra and has a boat festival. Lord Chaitanya went and bathed there. There's the temple of Gomira where Lord Chaitanya was living and worshipping Ka in separation the Siddha Bokul a liberated tree Bokul Ji place where Lord Hagas Takur was chanting. Then there's the Sarvabhoma Bhattacharya's temple. There's many Hanuman. Vedihaveni Veni Veni Veni Hanuman. There's Chakra theta place where Lord Chaitanya would see the sandhills by the beach. Let's go over that hill and run an ecstasy. Sometimes the Lord Chaitanya will daily go and bathe in the ocean. So many holy places there. There's also the Samadhi of Haridas Thakur. This Iskcon temple where Bhaitaginotakur used to. So tomorrow we'll have opportunity to serve Jagannath. Any questions? Anyone has?
Yes.
Krishna comes once in a day of Brahma. There are a thousand chatra yugas in one day of Brahma. We are 27 chatva yugas into the day of Brahma. So there's another 973 Yugas left.
Where.
Krishna won't be coming. Whatever histories are there from the Vedas Then people will know about Ka. The next day of Brahma he'll come again. And then he can show any kind of pastimes. Some may be the same. Some may be. No. Okay. Everyone's fired up. Fired up for Rath Yatra fired the pull Jagannath. I don't know how they do it here. But in some other place they have the ladies pull and the children pull. Then the men pull. They rotate. You get smaller. Here everybody can pull at the same time. Then everyone by turns they get a chance to pull indoor rod Special sport. Thank you very much, Hare Krishna.
In ecstasy of listening to Guru Maharaj's lecture here.
I forgot.
I was wanting to pull a few volunteers and go and discuss about what we're going to do tomorrow. Tomorrow it's a glorious day. We're going to have Rath Yatra. The biggest Rath Yatra that we're going to have in Damodesh. We've been having Rath Yatra now here in Damodesh for many years.
Almost 10 years.
Maybe in one year. My guru Maharaj asked me why you're not inviting me for Rath Yatra. But unfortunately the day that we have the Rath Yatra is on the original Rath Yatra day when as he said, he's always in Calcutta. And so we never managed to have him here for Rathyatra. So this time when I thought there's an opportunity for him to come I was thinking that we should have Rath Yatra here when he comes. 27 June is Rath Yatra originally in Puri as well as in Calcutta is going to be celebrated in a big scale.
And it's my desire now to go.
To the Puri Jagannatharath Yatra this year. So I was not wanting to miss Rathyatra in India. And so fortunately with his visit within a period of five to six days. That is why it was not announced to every one of you last Friday. We have organized the Rathyatra till this evening. We were still getting things ready at the Regent School. A lot of effort. I would really commend Shakuntala Mankani Ji and Shamsumdar Mankani Ji, Sanjay Mankani for really taking this effort. When I called him from Mayapur, when Guru Maharaj confirmed that he is coming, the initial reaction of Sanjay Mankani was that I think it's going to be difficult. And so I didn't want to push him.
I backed out.
And then we thought we will do some other programs. But once we discussed with the committee, I suddenly got a call. Maybe at 10:30 Dubai time. It was midnight for me. I got a call from Sanjay. Normally I don't pick up my GSM calls. But then it was Sanjay. So I picked it up and he.
Said, Shiva, go ahead.
My mother is very.
