This lecture (Upadeśāmṛta class) teaches practical and doctrinal guidance for Krishna-conscious life. It enumerates six activities that spoil devotional service (overeating/hoarding, over-endeavoring for difficult mundane goals, unnecessary mundane talk/gossip, following or rejecting scriptural rules without spiritual intent, associating with worldly-minded persons, greed for mundane achievement). The speaker explains the metaphysical scheme of three energies (antaranga/internal, tatastha/marginal, bahiranga/external), the four Vedic ashrams (student, householder, retired, renounced), and stresses balanced application of rules (including emergency exceptions). Community practices and group types (Namar/chanting, bhaktaviksha/communal meals, counselor groups) and festival anecdotes (Pānihāṭi/Danda Mohan picnic story) illustrate lived examples.
Ram no, not yet. This is a summary here. Once devotional service is spoiled when he becomes too entangled in the following six activities. 1. Eating more than necessary or collecting more funds than required 2. Over endeavoring for mundane things that are very difficult to obtain 3. Talking unnecessarily about mundane subject matters 4. Practicing the scriptural rules and regulations only for the sake of following them and not for the sake of spiritual advancement or rejecting the rules and regulations of the Scriptures and working independently or worth it 5. Associating with worldly minded persons who are not interested in ka consciousness and 6. Being greedy for mundane achievements report by His Divine Grace. Human life is known for plain living and hiding since all conditions are things since all condition since all condition living beings are under the control of the Lord's third energy. This material world is designed so that one is obliged to work. The supreme personality of Godhood has three primary energies or potencies. The first is called Antaranga Shakti or the internal potency. The second is called Tatashta Shakti or the marginal Bodhisattva. The third is called Bhagiranga Shakti or the external points Kabir Vetrana by the Sanskrit internal marginal External 3 portraits Antaranga Tatashta Vahi Ranga the translation of Antaranga is internal and Vairanga is external and Tatashta is in between. The two living entities can constitute the marginal potency and they are situated between the internal and external policies. Being subordinate as eternal servants of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, the Jiva atmas or atomic living entities must remain under the control of either the internal or external potency. When they are under the control of the internal potency, they display their natural constitutional activity, namely constant engagement in the devotional service of the Lord. This is stated in Bhagavad Gita, 9th chapter 13, verse O son of Rita. Those who are not deluded, the great souls are under the protection of the Divine nature. They are fully engaged in devotional service because they know me as the Supreme Personality of Godhood, original and inexhaustible. The word Mahatma refers to those who are broad minded, not cripple minded. Cripple minded persons always engage in satisfying their senses, sometimes extend their activities in order to do good for others through some ism like nationalism, humanitarianism or altruism. They may reject personal sense gratification for the sense gratification of others like the members of their family coming into your society, either national or international. Actually all this is extended sense gratification from personal to Communal to social. This may all be regular from the material point of view. But such activities have no spiritual value. The basis of such activity is sense gratification, either personal or extended. Only when a person gratifies the senses of the supreme Lord can he be called a Mahatma or broad minded person. This has 1011 pages nakta of instruction. It's like a sutra. Sutra is where teachings are condensed into ready concise quotes. And those quotes have profound meaning that one can go deeper and deeper into. Here one verse is explained by 11 pages. You could read it, you know. I'm explaining it more and more as the lifestyle of people changes according to their ashram. Ashram means their social status. Social in the sense of. There are four social orders in the Vedic society. Being a student, youth student, being married, being retired and being renounced. So how these six codes will be practiced are awaited in different ashrams, social orders, civil orders. Obviously with burial, especially between the grihastas and those from the other three are in the morning announced at Yahira. This over consumption. It's interesting in Mayapur Dham there's everywhere there's two kinds of attention here. One is eating, another is consuming in general or accumulating that if somebody eats more than they need then become really attached to consumption. Their attachment to the material world will increase. For there's different cults for many people and they're working. Some people live very simply living and not have that many economic resources to begin with. So it's not an issue. Some people they want to accumulate more and more to their business endeavors. The way to purify their endeavors. If their goal is to do something for Christians like this temple was built by the devil of some in the congregation. So that's a way of utilizing money. Someone may want to distribute prasadam or do some other kind and seva. The idea is that a percentage of the income is used for Krishna over their survival requirements that way. But one doesn't need to endeavor unless they have a very specific project endeavoring for which is sanctioned by higher spiritual authorities. And it's not recommended that much to just endeavor so hard to make more and more money. It's going to the cost of their spiritual life. There should be some time for meditation, for changing their Japan. Meditation, their mantra meditation. Some time for the family, time for taking care that the children grow up to be nice to Moses. Many different factors I learned that time should be amounted to not just accumulating one more money. Some people have very good karma and with this they may have allotted this much time put into making money. And they may be able to make a lot of money in that time. And then other people would. Karma is that somewhere, even if they put in immense quantities of time and they're not going to accumulate lots of money. Of course, if somebody has, everyone has a survival requirement. Food, clothing, housing, daycare, children's education. Some basic things that you have to look for. Beyond that, how much time is going to be given is the question here. It shouldn't be. Also, we accumulate more than what we can use. Therefore more than what we need at the cost of our spiritual life. Second and over endeavoring for mundane things. Prabhupada will explain all these later. How to skill a little overruled that are very difficult to obtain a spiritual life. We want to ensure that we have enough energy and time to be able to pursue our Ka conscious activities. Some people set some very high goals in the mundane worlds. And of course they're probably rewarded with some of them who have succeeded achieving their goals in various ways. Name, fame, money. These things are all fitting and temporary over endeavor set. Some people can do something within a limited endeavor, but it's the over enderman that means they put all their time and energy, everything to achieve this mundane goal. I mean, they like their spiritual life even the way they risk. Because they may not be able to get back to God at the end of life because they lose all their energy and time. Someone made me. Sometimes they do something spiritual which requires a tremendous endeavor. That's a different kind of. Sometimes it's not clear is it spiritual or mundane. They have to may have started out spiritual but become mundane later because we're just doing it as a more of an ego thing that might really be something useful for Krishna. Talking unnecessarily about mundane Satva Najras people working obviously during their work they have to describe so many mundane subject matters. But then those are necessary. The Ritza is unnecessarily when we come to the temple, when we come in the association of devotees, we can take a vacation when discussing politics. And one main things I think it's not really necessary for the temple. And we can discuss about how beautiful the beautys are. Today we can discuss about questions. Today I came and I asked anybody has any questions. We are just in the habit of discussing about Ka conscious topics. You read the Srimad Bhagavad, Tamuindu Bhagavad giving us all questions and answers. So so many questions in Arjuna's mind. So many questions in the different personalities and the Bible, Quran, asking so many very interesting questions. If they hadn't asked those questions, we wouldn't have all that. So with the Jalpa, that includes things like rumor mongering, gossiping, just talking those subjects which can also turn into something more serious like Vaishnav opera. Those people offense to the devotees. At the least, it's a waste of time for spiritual dynamite. You can start getting more and more attached to material things and you start to gain a taste for just discussing mundane topics and lose your taste for discussing more Krishna. So all day long we have to talk necessary mundane discussions in our business, in our schooling, in our work and whatever we're doing. It'd be nice to have a break where we can talk about ka, talk about spiritual topics to have some time. That's why we recommend that there's come to the temple as periodically, as much as we can to attend certain classes, discussion groups, study groups, to hear Hari Potam, to have house programs and naamatas where somebody comes to the house and Kirkhamshir and Prashad, question answered Sambhaki Bhiksha groups which are groups that are based on mainly creating a team effort, caring for the devotees in the group. There's discussions and spiritual topics, training of the devotees, discussion about expanding the movement, what the group can do without tempo and expansion. Then there's another kind of group which is gaining popularity called counselor group where a senior devotee is accepted by everyone as a counselor and he personally monitors and mentors the development of the people in the group for more of a superior position and Dr. Viksha, the monitoring ceremony is done more as sister older brother, where the ghost group is more like representative of the guru kind of serious role. So some places use those groups. You have to have someone that everybody accepts to be their mentoring on behalf of Uru and Krishna. So these are the three popular groups that are going on now is Namar, Bhartaviksha and Council. And they meet together during the week. Often they meet together in the houses of the Vihastas so that they can have Hari kata replacing this Pujalpa mode for discussion about Ka, practicing scripture, rules and regulations only for itself and following others and not for the sake of spiritual adventure. Does that mean like fanatical, just following the rules without considering whether that particular rule is really useful and appropriate for the person, whether it's helping them. There are so many rules in the scriptures and sometimes one rule I said in emergencies there are no rules. Some like in their circumstances, you have to survive we don't take meat fishing and garlic as a dietary home. But there's a history about one sage who was caught in a drought in the desert and he was about to die and he came across the dead dog. So he took it as Krishna's mercy and ate the dog and survived, got out of the desert and after that resumed his vegetarian. Who knows life and death. So in that case, what is the. There's a rule that says we're supposed to try to survive. Self preservation takes priority. There's another rule that says should be a vegetarian. But if you're about to die because there's no food and the only food is there is meat and then anyway it's a dead dog not killing an animal. Recently the dog died in front of them. So someone that said you ate meat, you brought two other. But I have a live dog on it. Otherwise I do that I want to gain by that. So this will call me a Mahapraha being too much fanatical about the rules or also someone who goes the other extreme of each and just that rule does it apply to me because this gives some very inappropriate reason and not follow. One of the names of Bhakti Yoga is called Buddhi Yoga. Buddhi means intelligence. And one has to learn how to apply it one's intelligence in practicing Ka consciousness or Bhakti Yoga. So all this, it's all a balance. Don't eat too much, don't eat too little either. Some people fast too much and they don't have the strength to do their service. Some people have different metabolisms, they may eat less, they're bigger. So many factors. In Mayapur we have the system that I mean there's actually Ayurveda, the Kabludit glories of Mahavikta. But everywhere in the world there's this feature that if you overeat, it's an offense. But in my upwork, overeat is no offense. You get sick, it's not good though you shouldn't be. One of the dangers. People always like to hear that when it's a big feast of mine. Try to keep everybody busy walking around the holy place. So this all kinds of guidelines. The rules and regulations are guidelines to help us make spiritual advancement. So when to accept one and check another. All this is to be. One has to develop a higher intelligence of what's really going to be beneficial for my Ka consciousness. What's words appropriate for this particular situation. Associating with the universities. Join us on this Associating with worldly minded persons who are not interested in Ka consciousness. Of course, during working time all day long I'm associating with people like this. When I first joined the Krishna conscious movement, my parents were. Before I joined, my parents were industrialists in the middle of the west here in America. And when I joined the temple didn't have any money to pay the rent. So I wasn't used to working outside too much from rich families. And Tola said tomorrow and get a job. And at that time there was no books, there was no big congregation to really give donations. The movement was just one year, two years registered 1968. So went out to manpower and got these day to day jobs. And so I have some amazing experiences. I won't bore you with them now I can appreciate especially that kind of labor level. It was very mundane. There are topics of discussion. But what to do. We had to earn some money to pay the rent. Even though we were young monks. That was. So we come back to the temple and we want to really discuss about Ka. So sometimes when you're working, what can we do? But the idea is that we don't really associate with those people in a very intimate way. Just a friendly talk with them. Let them really get into deep association. Revealing the mind, opening the mind that we have for other devotees. So association can also mean when you really associate with the devotee. When you're exchanging spiritual information, sharing your what you want to share about your life to get to know each other. You do that kind of intimate association with someone who's spiritually aspiring, like yourself. Because when you start opening your mind to someone who's a very mundane person, they'll open their mind and you don't really want to hear all the things they have in their mind. I said it'll be all about the breaking and writing the principles. In the Krishna conscious movement we respect women. So we should see women other than our wives as mothers. Women are called baby and Magni goddesses. They're supposed to be seen in a very respectful way. And we should avoid seeing them in a very exploitated enjoying mo. Of course the exception husband and wife and will have. They should still be respectful. But obviously they'll be having a conjugal attachment for each other. But in the mundane world, mostly people talk about opposite sex. And some people in the very what to say enjoying mood which is not good for spiritual advancement. Maybe that's changing a war on society. To some extent more politically correct. But Prophet said his astrologer had predicted that he applied himself to be a multi millionaire that he met his spiritual master and he made a decision, life decision. That he wouldn't over endeavor for achieving this multi millions. He would give us this absurd amount of time. He wanted time. He published books for his spiritual master Back to God every day as a rehasa by what he believed he was doing in the rehabsa. So that time if he had put into his business, maybe he would have made millions like his challenger predicted that we he wanted to give his time to his spiritual master. If by the endeavors that the businesses he did, he made money. Some for Chinese, some for Krishna. No doubt he did spend something for Krishna. But he didn't become a big millionaire as a Vihasta. And later he told us as a Sanyasi no. I have 108 temples all over the world. Each one worth so many matsama. How many incidents? He said, but as a Sannyasi I cannot live in any one of them more than a few days with all the property of Krishna. So he would travel around and stay in his temple in a few days, then move on. So he told me that he was cursed two minutes in his post. That's right. That he was cursed by the children's parents. The children here in the west that were upset that their children had become monks. Initially this time we needed dedicated months. Months for pushing on the movement. But then after a while, many people started getting married and Prabhupada gave a different focus. Having people practice from their homes. Initially we needed some dedicated people to push around, start their movement. So just a very good book. This book talks very seriously about spiritual mind principles. So curse. And the curse was that Narayani got cursed when he was preaching to the sons of Darshan that he couldn't stay in any place into travel. So I have that purse. I can't stay in the place. Then in 1977 when he was ill and been around, I went to see him. Spent half my time in there after nine. But he told me that you are used to Nazis. No, I have to take this purse from you. He told me that twice. So I ended her curse. I ner that's why I'm forced to travel. So I can't stay anywhere more than a few days or even one day, a few hours. But in the Holy Dharma curses don't work. I just been in my airport for a couple months. So there. There doesn't work. I can stay in my airport. But when I notice I leave my airport, travel home. So somehow that's leavening here. So in reading about this verse, Prabhupada we're telling the many practical examples it may be too heavy for us for people just beginning it's like a whole paradigm shift whole different way of looking at life. This is our instructions for people that want to get back to God in this lifetime and want to spiritually achieve perfection Then they had to make some cutting decisions what's the priorities in their life? And I want. I saw her Peter Burwash. He's a tennis professional in Kenya, not here. He gave keynote address right. I was the also I was there. I heard him give a couple of addresses to the viewers of ISKCON North America. He has a multi million dollar operation but he said that he went to see Srila Prabhupada and he got a two hour audience and he talked to him about doing business and probably practically gave him selling brights about eight different principles for businessmen. Maybe some of you should publish a book the seven hazards for affecting people times. Hopefully they can use it the eighth principle. But I can only remember one of the principles. I don't know if he mentioned all of them. I don't think he did. One was to be principled about your business. This is a big issue nowadays and I was asked to speak at the Indian Institute of Management in Calcutta some years ago about ethics. They had a department on human ethics and called something else also where just like every day in the Bayern or week or Enron with all the different businesses where they cheated in their income tax, they cheated in their accounting they misled the stockholders, they misled the government, misled the people and then the whole thing collapsed and now they're I think recently was found guilty of so many charges realizations of people from that pyrig robot Prabhupada him that follow your problem higher principles when they do your business. Otherwise the karma is so heavy that not only is virtually nothing successful but eventually the karma comes around and so there was these are those sutras or principles they can be developed into very deep applications. I get the feeling that this book is meant more for the the or it's. It's studied more for by people who are really into spiritual life already. But don't get scared away some of the things seem too heavy because it can be goals to achieve King of spiritual life. Spiritual life is a gradual process. Maybe somebody can't stop gossiping all at once. You can try to talk more about Krishna. I know we have several Jerusalem and they're so much so serious to know. I don't know if prophet said they're the best being a manager, being one of the members of the world like governing body and being a local manager. In my many times I had to deal with management issues and I one time I was talking with one of the brothers about the puja that was related to him and then after we finished it we were almost finished with our discussion tell the game about the pen interrupted and started talking about some management issue that wasn't connected to him. I looked back he was gone. Just like it is when professor evolve him start his service. You would waste time to sit there and hear some kind of. Especially for when some critical complaint about somebody else that wasn't involved in his department. Just very much careful not to last the time. So I give seminar in the third verse. Third verse is all the positive things that you should do like the enthusiastic, patient, calm satisfaction all across the cross section if you put a wheel or some structure on the leader. How about one drop? What? What speed is 8? May 2016 sa sam sa sam ram sa so last night I explained about Rabbi Madani when he was here last night we talked about Rabbi Abdas. How he was the son, the heir of a multi millionaire family but he was very much attached to Lord Chaitanya. How Lord Chaitanya he approached him and Lord Chaitanya told him to stay in his house and be a good example of a materially responsible person while keeping his heart on Krishna. Then he did that. He followed Roland. Excuse me. Then he had an idea and he thought let me go to sleep. So he went to see Nithyananda Peru and found him at Panihati sitting under a big banyan tree on a raised platform surrounded by many of his associates and senior Kirtan seniors, Vaishnavas devotees. So in that way he prayed his obeisances from a distance. And then Lord Ditinanda was informed at some distance Raghunathas is paying his obeisances. Then Lord Nityananda said Thief, thief. You are coming just like a thief. So now you come here, I'm going to punish you. Somebody shouted out your name and said come here, I'm going to punish you. How do you jump up the front right there? I don't think so. So Raghunagastha, his reaction was he just stayed laying down paying his obeisances. What did I do wrong? Now Anityananda got up and walked over to him and put his lotus feet on the head. I'm rubbing my vest. In Vedic culture if it's a Guru or Krishna puts his foot on your head. It's considered a very big blessing. That's probably one of the biggest blessings you can get. So then he said I'm going to punish you. Your punishment is that you have to feed me and my associates here a picnic. I'm a cowboy boy. I like flat. I like to take picnics. Bona Bojana. So just give us a breakfast snack with all those early lunch. But it's like a breakfast night or flat. Rice and yogurt and fruits and also salt. This festival then became known as the Danda Mohun Sahib, the festival of punishment. There's actually a festival of blessings to Radhuma Blast since he was it wasn't any problem for him to finance a picnic for or being a multimillionaire. He took it as a very great blessing.
