Jaya Pataka Swami teaches from the Hari-bhakti-vilāsa, covering Ekadasi fasting, devotional service, and Krishna consciousness pilgrimage sites. He shares personal experiences visiting temples and festivals worldwide, offering practical guidance for spiritual practice.
O son, Lorkesha vow holds the club this sponge and lotus flour in his hand. Firstly told me that of all the merit achieved by fasting on whatever ecodesi fall in one year can be attained by fasting on this one Ekadasi Neo Angelica. Of this there is no doubt. So the very auspicious Ekalasi Bhima was asking to Vyasadeva. That's very difficult for him to fast on all the Ekalasis. He's known as Viku Dhara. He's got this special digestive power called Vrika directly from Agni Dev. As he's the son of Bayou Dev, he's got a special fire in his stomach. Just like there's a fire that burns wood, there's another fire that digests food. So for Dima, it's very difficult. He wants to eat once a day. Eating your diet, he eats once a day. He has to eat three times a day full. He was asking yesterday, isn't there somewhere maybe once in a year? I can fast one day, but the 26 days is too difficult for me. So then Vyadsev kept saying, to avoid heavenly planets, to avoid going to hell, better to observe both the fallacies and the light in dark lunar months, lunar cycles. He said, nobody is playing. I'm really hungry. I get so hungry because of this blessing I have. I got this special value in my stomach. Fire and wood, fire and digestion and fire that creates fog when hot and cold stream hits. So I got this Brika fire. Vyasadev told him that finally said okay, actually for Kali Yuga, people cannot do to rain Chapatyas. At least if they can observe a cowardly season dark and light fortnite, this will be very auspicious for them. Highest goal in life is surrender to Krishna and render full devotional service to Anava Hora High. Is there translation? No translation. Why speak out in Bengali? So they walk up to you speak it out in Bengali again. We are stressing every ecology. We should fast. I became frightened. Oh grandfather, what should I do? I am completely unable and unequipped to fast twice in a month throughout the year. Please tell me of one fasting day that will bestow the greatest benefit upon me. And the answer? They said, well, without drinking even water, you should fast on the Karasi that occurs during the light fortnight of the month of Jestah, May June, when the sun travels in the sign of Horus and Gemini. According to learned personalities, on this day one may bathe and perform Ashumana for Pratipokshana purification. But while performing Ashumana, one may only drink that amount of water equal to a drop of gold or that amount it takes to immerse a single mustard seed. You can put this amount of water in your right hand and sip it. You drink more than that. You're fast. It's a rigid fast effect. From sunrise Anakad Si day to sunrise and the Gwada Si day. If a person dares to observe this great fast, he usually achieves the result of observing all 24 other Akadasi fasts without the entire year. In the morning advantasi, tomorrow you take a bath. You can all take a bath in the Ganges. You have Ganges here you can take bathroom ganshis by shouting loudly three times. Ganga. Ganga. Ganga. Okay, you took your holy bath today also dancing in Kirtan. You can give gold and water to the worthy Brahmanas. If you can't give gold, at least give some water. So this Sakadasi gets free of sins. Observe one year psychiatrist in blessings. Because the parents are babing in places of pilgrimage, charity and fasting on dark and light fallacies throughout the year. Become a great person. Opulence of wealth, fame, strength, health. The moment I'm dead, the Yamadurtas stay away. They got their huge maces and their mystical pasha robes to bind their victims. They refused to approach someone who observed the Sakadasi. Instead the Vishnudas take him back to Godhead. So when the Pandavas heard about this here, they all began to observe it. That's why it became known as the Pandavanir Jala Bala seat or a Kadasi should pray that our supreme personality Godhead Lord Sri Krishna in the morning nature. So Kalpa, O Lord of the Devas, supreme personality of Gandhi Purushotta. I shall observe a Karasi without eating water or unlimited unto day. I shall break fast on the next day guarantee. These are so many different things you have to do if you want to observe this Ekara sea. You can give charity of water and cows or give Brahmanas and flour or a pot filled with water to give water on this day it's equal to giving 10 million gold coins. You should also chant Japa Mala. Chant the Lord's name. Like this you can go back to Ka, get forgiven from sins of killing a Brahmana, drinking liquor, wine, being envious of your spiritual master or ignoring his instructions or telling lies and Varasi. You can feed some Brahmana devotees some sweets. Even the Sama must be basically very sinful. And fallen, he becomes completely purified. Even if we hear the glories, we can also go back to Vishnu performing Shraddh ceremony. An Amavasya that's very auspicious. But just by hearing the narration, so powerful and dear to the Lord. Brush your teeth, offer puja to Vishnu also says Shudu Abhishek to Krishna of milk in the evening. So maybe Prophet also it was mentioning how they asked him. This is the Bhima Ikadasi Prabhupada said Baha Bhima Kadisi. Yes. The Prabhupada was saying that Ekadas is meant for fasting. But since we cannot fast, let's take some fruits, vegetables and things. Otherwise the codesin means fasting. The proverb said if there is service and by fasting the service will be stopped. Then better eat and serve. Somebody feels weak, he can take prasadam and do service. Prabhupada says the purpose of a Kadasi is you don't take much of the usual food. We don't take grains, materials. Najala Kadasi means no water. Water is also kind of. Sometimes drinking water is also excused of fasting also. But some devotees are there. They drink only one drop of water. And the whole day and night they fast and observe Vikrasi Braja. The night is called Hali Wasar. The whole night they chant. This is called Rida Braja. Pratama said, you said at once that your initiated disciples should chant 25 rounds. Is that a rule? That we should chant 25 rounds and a Khadasi prophet? We have 16 rounds. No, I mean Akada Singh. Oh yes. The Khan simply should chant. No other business, New Jala. No preaching work to the God for preaching. No, those who are preaching, not for them, Prophet Sid. Those who are sitting idle. And there was laughter. So since our preaching is exalted, he asks to go through any regulation. Actually if he's busy in preaching work, that's first class. Not my manufactured word. My Guru Maharaj, the Madhura Maharaj. When he was a Brahmacharya, his name was Sahayagriva. He was to go somewhere, but he was sick. Guru Maharaj Bhakti Siddhartha Saraswik Thakur was informed that he was sick. Today as he comes, he cannot take his regular meals. So Maharaj said, don't let him take immediate meals and go for female. Mahaj would sacrifice everything for preaching. So like that. Anyway, there's some Zima. He wanted to do that. Something very special, very severe. Tabasya compact. The whole Year in one. So he was given this option. Not that everyone has to do Danya chala kadashi. If you can do it, it's nice when somebody is preaching or they have to work all day. Maybe they'll find it difficult to observe this. It's not like you have to do it. You have to do ekadas. You should do no grains, beans and cereals. That's a given. You can do the nirjala this day and do all the things were said. Then you get the special blessings like one year zakatis. All the things that were said for those who have the ability. Okay. This is a special option for them. Because Krishna is giving us certain gateways how to get back to him faster. Like the Purushottam month or the Dhammadar month. Janmastami Radhastami Samansya Karasis is also a special Akadasi. The Prophet said, we want actually for preaching it's more important. Also we don't want any devotees that if they are doing very hard work, that maybe by fasting they fall asleep while driving or they have some difficulty, shouldn't take any risk. It's really meant for people who are like able to just sit still the whole day and do japas and bathings and things like that. May not be easy for everyone to do. If somebody does it highball, we give all respect. Very good. Not that every year you have to do it, but it's nice sometimes you can do. They have to see what your schedule is, what your workload is, how it's feasible. You don't want somebody to fall off the forklift, dizzy, something like that. So this also staying in some holy place, bathing and chanting Japa the whole day, it's more difficult. You're working, you have to do so many things. So like this human life is meant to serve Krishna. We're to go back to Krishna or to serve Krishna. Recently I was in Australia and there people were also they're explaining to people because they have a yoga retreat center there. In this material world, we have got the tendency to try to enjoy everything. We're conditioned that we are to enjoy through that senses. But the Bhakti Yoga means we change our attitude that we are serving Ka from trying to lord it over the material world to trying to serve Krishna. Everything we do has to seva. So we change from the enjoying attitude to the service attitude. People who are enjoying attitude, they can't figure out what's with these devotees, why they're doing this. When somebody has a Serving attitude. They say how much more satisfying it is. By nature, we're actually servants. Husband is serving his family, working hard, bringing the food and money for the expenses, for the education, clothing, housing, everything for the family. The wife, the mother is serving the husband, taking care of the children. What Maharaji told me today, she's busy from morning till night caring for her children. She is running around getting them to school, getting them back from school, feeding them, combing them, bathing them, keeping an eye on them. So busy, busy, busy. No time for chanting. She said some ladies are able to do all this. Plus they're chanting to learn from them. One of them asking the great mystic yogis, take care of two, three kids. Bless. Chant how they're able to balance all their things. And there was another lady, she said in Australia, she was saying that I like the chanting of Hare Bisha and I like the reading of your spiritual books. And I like eating the spiritual food. So can I chant? Can I read? Can I take Prasadam? Can I do devotional service without being a Hare Krishna? Yeah, no problem. You know what she thought doing a Hare Krishna was. That's all we do. But she thought, you know, that somehow. Yeah, she would be a Hare Krishna. It's something like some heavy thing. But all these things she liked. Okay, just do that. No problem. So like this. I don't know. Somehow you don't want to also scare away people every day. If you become a high kitchen, I got. Don't use all the car seeds. You got to do this. You might get scared like Rico. Like. I mean, Bhima is shaking. I can't go without eating. So that's the problem. Of course he said this is best. This is the standard. But he stressed mainly that what's important is follow their codes. See, no brains, pulses. I know for some. One diabetic lady told me that without taking grains, she gets sick. Didn't really have an answer for her. But I know there's so many alternatives now. Raj here, Atta this, Artha. There are so many different things back week that maybe some kind of substitute that worked even for such people. What's important is our attitude should be one of service. We chant every day. So since this is a pound of the neutral economy, one thing I'd like to tell you. This year we went on the Vietnam safari where we went to Andhra Pradesh. Anybody here from Andhra Pradesh? We went to Tamil Nadu. Anyone from Tamil Nadu? We went to Kerala. Anyone from Kerala? We went to Karnataka. Anyone from Karnataka? So we went to all these four states. And visited holy places but in Tamil Nadu there's a holy place called Kanna called Kanchi Pura Kanchi There's Shiva Kanchi, Vishnu Kanchi so we went to Vishnu Kanchi and there I had the book there's 14 Divya dashes we didn't have enough time to Visit all the 14 we heard when Radanath Swami was there for like a week you could visit at all but we were just there for six hours in six hours we visited 6, 7 Divya Dash's crash course but one of the. I saw one of them I said a Pandava Dhoot temple the sense where devotees of the Lord of the Pandavas I wanted to know what is this temple? It's the temple of Krishna There the history is explained that Janani Jaya the son of Parikshit Maharaj Parishit Maharaj was the grandson of Arjuna so Janamajaya was Emperor of the world after Parishit Maharaj and he was listening to the glories of his forefathers so he heard how God Krishna although the supreme personality of Gandhi agreed to go as a dud as a messenger as an ambassador for the Banavas Just like we have our Rastradul our ambassadors here for the country they help us sometimes different national ambassadors they help their citizens here in the Gulf there's a sign off sign for people that are overstaying their visa amnesty so their ambassadors or agents help them get out of here without going to jail so like that they help them so but usually this is also servants of the government so how Krishna, supreme Lord became such a servant a messenger for the Pandavas so Janamajaya was just appreciating how Krishna is so merciful that because his devotee is always serving him he agrees to be the servant for his devotee he volunteers Nadi if I only volunteer, I'll do it so Krishna went to see Duryodhan Make a long story a little shorter the Durya Lord Krishna is coming Unarmed, no weapons this is my chance I can kill him the Napanovas will have no protector I will be the victor without Krishna what the Napa do against me she may not strategy When Krishna comes they will try to assassinate soldiers who come out from under the floor by trapdoor and run and attack and I can't even think of it so anyway so this is the strategy so of course Krishna offered all kinds of peace even give them five villages let's just have peace but do you know I will not give as much land as you put up in him, if you want peace, you have to have war. So the negotiation was over. Then Theodore soldiers went to attack Krishna. And Krishna took a gigantic form. Gigantic. Bigger and bigger and bigger. Bigger. So huge. Then he took a vista Rupa. Then he left that place. He could do nothing. Then Chandamichaya said brother, I want to see this gigantic form of Krishna. We have never heard how does this gigantic form look like. So somehow Krishna appeared to him in his gigantic form. Because he's also a great devotee. And then he was requested to assume a deity form. So he transformed from this gigantic form to the deity form. And that deity is still there in Kanchipuram. How many have seen it? 2, 3, 4, 5, 6. Okay, six out of so many. The only six I've seen. I wanted to see also. I also seven. So then I went into this temple. It's very dark, there's no electricity. They just use their lamps. She went deep into the temple. There's a ghee wick lamps. And I saw this little like a silver fish out. I thought what is this little beautiful utsav motif but where there's no deity. Then gradually my eyes got adjusted to the darkness. Then I saw that the deity was in the lap of the Christian city. Like maybe half or bigger than this. Almost as big as this room. Wide and 28ft high. A gigantic Krishna sitting down giving his blessings. He Pujara a long stick in offer arti all in the Orisa spirit. All like wow. To have that meeting in this building, I had to break the floor through. Head would be coming up here. Waist would be, you know this is the next floor. You come up there, waist here drawing for the feet. You see what are the temples that don't make you take photograph. You have to see it or believe it. So like that. So this temple was the original temple from 4,000, I don't know, 7, 8, 900 years ago, time of Jammujaya Maharaj. That's called Bhanavadhud temple. Not so many people know about that temple. But very very interesting dealing like that. We were going to safari. We go discovering new places. Places that you heard about and places that you may not have heard about. So like that today is the Pandavas day also. Voice to those who are observing the mutual accuracy. Voice to those who are observing any kind of a callous. I'll switch over there. And that's a little brief time for all also everyone. If you're not chanting Hare Ka on deeds, it's good to chant on deeds. A minimum number of rounds every day. 1, 2, 4, 6, 8, 12, 16, whatever you can do more. Okay. Prophet's test. I go over 16 rounds. When the Khadasi I dealing it when I'm in Mayapur sometime I do the. I did that near Jalal in Karasi. Had enough time to do it days in the Ganshis. One thing. When you bathe in the Ganges you shouldn't take water underwater on a fast day. You know what that means? Like you're allowed to go and bathe in the Ganges. So you show everyone I'm fasting and you're going under the water three times under. That's called drinking water underwater and a fasting. You're showing off to everybody. But actually you're sneaking. There's some people different religions have their fast days. They do like that they show up but they don't do anyway Krishna. You're fasting for Krishna. He knows what you're doing. What's the use? But when you do your Sankalpa, what type of fast you doing? You do a sankalpa. You say Krishna is doing Nirjala and doing sajalah. When fasting like this without disturbing Anu Kalpa different levels of fasting whatever kind you do. Let's do a sankalpa that you'll follow that you break your fast the next day I was told 5:30 in the morning until about 10. Is the break fast huh? If you do no child, you're a baker faster. Don't just eat a big thing rice first take some liquidy stuff. Break it gradually so you don't get sick Tomorrow design traveling. I didn't put neutral not taking water underwater and heating moving Then they give me some help yard. Okay. So now like to see the world tour it starts in guarpunima. This is 2006, March 13th. Mark time. This is my home. Hi Purdam always coming going special festival of Sometimes Krishna is wearing sandalwood today he's in his Chandanyatra mode. But the Pujaris dressed him up like a bumblebee. And radar running like a lotus. The Krishna is taking the honey from the lotus. Jai Sri Ladhe Angamali In Kerala there's a. You know how Gopalaj installed the deities there? What's his name? He said these giving this over to ISKCON Then I was in a place called Shamdesh. I don't know if you ever heard of that place. Somewhere in some hideaway giving class I went down to Durban, South Africa for The Rathyatra. I'm somewhere in the crowd there anyway. So there you can see the Indian Ocean. This is on the beach in Durban, South Africa. It's known as the Rainbow Tanji. They're the Africans, the Indians, the Haitians, the Europeans. Everyone from different backgrounds. They're all together. No more apartheid. So they say that our Rath Yatra is the best example of how this unity and diversity can work. They have various tents, about 30 different tents. This is the Deities 10, a big marquee. While 10,000 people consider they distribute 200,000 plates of prasadam. The congregation there were 45 minutes away in a place called Phoenix in Kuala. What do you call it? Zulu Kola. Kwazulu kwazulu Pradesh. This state. They built this temple. There's no residence here. All the worship is done by different congregational devotees sharing the Jagannath de Gornitay went to a place called Maturedesh where they had a fire. Yagya in the oasis might not have been hot enough. So they wanted a little more heat. I guess some ceremonies, Samskaras initiation. Picking out the names is a big young Yang. I was getting some moral support, went to Leicester for our retreat. Many congregational members from around the UK came and we discussed different topics of devotional service. Like everywhere fired up chanting and dancing. This is the silhouette of my traveling secretary. This is in Balaram Dish. They have a. They have their own place. The hall as big as this? Maybe bigger. Bigger. Bigger than this. Hyderabad Rana Madan Mohan deities. Everett Rhodes opposite Polar Eddie Sweet shop. Nice to gpo. We lost. Maharash was there. We did a foundation stone. All foreigns in the grounds. They wear them horseshoes. At that time I went building this project. Help from different devotees NRIs in some owned by the land. It's right next to the beach. About half hour from the main city center in Visakhapatnam. This happened to be Akshay Tritia and he's saying the Rashad. So I can't tell the whole thing. But somehow we got up with a special permit and I was able to get a very close darshan of Lord Simha Shalom, the Braha Narsinga deity without the covering of sandalwood. They call this Nijarupadarshanam. Once a year for 12 hours they take this sandalwood off and you can see what the deity looks like. And they cover with sandalwood again for the whole year. 12 hours a year. There's huge lacks and lacks of people queuing up all day and night. So somehow I passed I could go to the back door. The final we got to and the policeman was so harassed everybody threw the paperback said I can't help you go back somehow by missioning Dave's mercy we got him praying with Torah temple. We go visit a different temple. Here are some congregational members. Another nice festival if you can come over for a day or two now they have direct Dubai to Calcutta flights every day. How do you like these little portable conch shelves? I don't know what planet they got them from then this might be a familiar place you've seen before. This is a place called Namodar Desh. There the devotees come in a hall which has no windows. This has a big block in the back. And then they chant Hare Ka listen to classes and they went to New Orleans after the Kachina hurricane devotees had a program. Seattle was an interesting place. I went after many many years. There's many Bhakti Brickshaw groups there from people from many Indians are working in Microsoft and Boeing. I think Microsoft is majority Indians at least 50% and so we have a lot of Bhakti Visha recently also I heard that now in Bangalore they're also giving Bhagawa Vida classes at Infosys and different other big organizations IT organizations. So this is Seattle Krishna Davis I went to Boise, Idaho. They have an almhata there that is also a nice temple built by a disciple Gopaltishtamaras. It was very chilly there. It's up in northern part of America. This is my morning chapel walk Los Angeles festival in spring the Helena festival. So they have. Here's Krishna Prema Prabhu makes cd He's a musical technician. He did the soundtrack of the exhibition in the Delhi wonderful take some of the young people coming over San Diego we did a. We did a Cirudadi festival that's coming on the 28th of June a few days but we already had in Atlanta this year early you can have here the Rudy. We're going to a park here. But the one in Brazil is big success. It went so big they purchased another. They're renting another building two doors down. People are queued up on the road every day for lunch to get the prasada. The policeman in the airport manual prasadam too. The youth program boys and girls. Anybody here from Nepal. This is the college devotee girls doing dancing before joining that Croatia festival near the sea coast. Maharash is at the altar giving a seminar and holding the same controller there in a nearby city, Rijeka get some of that creation. The bodies devotees are actually all over the volcano in Birmingham, England. Mayor of Birmingham giving his speech in a real heavy Birmingham accent. Went to Moscow, Russia where we had a special program with the congregation. Then put the marquee at the temporary landing. And now we have a new land given by the government. Two hectares outside of the town. They have to leave this place went back to India to Raj Mandi. It was part of the Gulavari. But our temple there, Raj Mandi, you can see this. They go by on the train. Beautiful temple. Radhakrishna Balaji deities. Especially going back again to Russia for the Damastani.
