Lecture by Jaya Pataka Swami (Czech Republic, 5 July 2007) on Śrīmad Bhāgavatam 4.26.4. The speaker explains King Puranchana's hunting as an allegory for sense gratification and uncontrolled desires, contrasts three Vedic approaches (karma-kanda, mystic yoga, bhakti-yoga), and tells multiple stories (carpenter/tiger; devotee who tames animals by chanting; Madayi's bathing steps) to illustrate how chanting Hare Krishna controls senses and remediates karma.
Translation by his divine grace it was almost impossible for King Puranchana to give up the company of his wife of his queen, even for a moment. Nonetheless, on that day, being very much inspired by the desire to hunt, he took up his bow and arrow with great pride and went to the forest not caring for his wife. Report by His Divine grace AC Bhaktiveda Swami Prabhupada this is spoken today in the shimad bhagavad in 4th canto, 26th chapter, 4th verse. At the Chick Summer Camp. Today is the 5th of July 2007 Christopdo 5:21 Gorando Krishna one form of hunting is known as wooden hunting. A conditioned soul is never satisfied with one life. Those whose senses are very much uncontrolled especially try to hunt for many women. King Bhuranjana is abandoning the company of his religiously married wife is representative of the conditioned soul's attempt to hunt for many women for such gratification. Wherever a king goes, he is supposed to be accompanied by his queen. But where the king or conditioned soul becomes greatly overpowered by the desire for sense gratification, he does not care for religious principles. Instead, with great pride he accepts the bow and arrow of attachment and hatred. Our consciousness is always working in two ways, the right way and the wrong way. When one becomes too proud of his position, influenced by the mode of passion, he gives up the right path and accepts the wrong one. Kshatya Kings are sometimes advised to go to the forest to hunt ferocious animals just to learn how to kill. But such forays are never meant for sense gratification. Killing animals to eat their flesh is forbidden for human beings of Java. Mr. Translation again, it is almost. It was almost impossible for King Parasita to give up the company of his queen even for a moment. Nonetheless, on that day, being very much inspired by the desire to hunt, he took up his bow and arrow with great pride and went to the forest not caring for his wife. There's a chapter in King Puranchana goes to the forest to hunt. So we go to the forest. King Paranjal is going to the forest for hunting. This is like the conditioned soul going into the material world to try to find some sense gratification. Because of our desires in this material world, we are taking different births. Those who have desires of the mortal goodness can take birth in the heavenly planets. Those with desires in mode of passion are in this earthly planet. Those in the mode of ignorance, they fall down into the animal kingdom and lower species. The Buddha's vision like this Understand? Sometimes we take breath in the heavenly path. Sometimes we're at hellish condition like this. We're wandering through the different species of life. Sometime in the male body, sometimes in a female body. Sometime in a unique body. Sometimes an animal, maybe Smither, Sometimes a worm, maybe Cheval, sometimes a bird, maybe dark. A human being demigoding around the universe because of our different desire. Explains. Just like a dog is sometimes very hungry, going to some house. Sometimes he gets some food, sometimes he gets big with six. Maybe I was being holy. Sometimes we have a little sense of gratification. Sometimes we suffer. We have to take this hold because of our material desires and carrying it with us birth after birth, all these desires. So this load of karma is on our head. But sometimes someone may be carrying a load on his head and they put it on their shoulders. They get a backpack, put it on their back. A lot of fancy backpacks. You can get this as opposed to wherever they shifted. They're still carrying the same load from this place to that place. This is the complication of the material world. There's two main issues. Three main issues the Prabhupada brings up here. One is how people are hunting for the member of the opposite sex. Here mentions about women hunting. Because now we are more advanced in society. Now even women are doing manhunting. Modern women, they also have this tendency. Some of the modern women but. So the senses are so much uncontrolled. This is why this recognition is also. There's so much difficulties they're having controlling the senses. The prophet said that our grihasits are Ka conscious. They're not by conditions that that the same. They're not like conditioned souls. They're more like liberated souls. They actually act in Krishna consciousness. Then they should be able to control themselves and be satisfied within their Grihasta ashram because of their having developed a transcendental taste. They're not simply dependent upon the sense gratification for their salvation. For their, you know, like satisfaction. The different kinds of processes mentioned in the Vedas. Does the Karma Kanda. Karma does sense gratification according to the Vedic rules and regulations and thus avoid sin. Then there's or the process of mystic yoga where people try to control their senses by meditation. But sometimes the senses jump out of control and they're not able to maintain their system. Then there is Bhakti yoga where everyone uses. Where the bhaki always use their senses in Krishna service. This way they're able to control the senses. In this regard, he told one story. There Was a village. And they had their was living there. The village was next to the jungle. So one young carpenter visited the village. And he wanted to go to the forest to cut some wood, make some furniture, make some money. Because in the wood in the forest you get free wood. In the market you have to buy your wood. So he was like one parts of wood. One old carpenter saw him walking. So where are you going? So I'm going to the woods. What are you going to do there? I'm going to get some wood, make some furniture. Be careful in the woods. There's a tiger. Tigers, they need you. Thank you very much. What is the need of a gun? That's what they say. I got my saw, I got my hatchet, my axe. I cut off a big piece of a big branch of a tree. And I just swing that branch of the tree around my head. How's the cheetah swings the branches on you then? So he didn't bring a gun, went into the forest. He was cutting off branches. He went running towards this carpenter. The news came back to the village. The young carpenter had died. Killed by a tiger. You had been warned by the old carpenter. Someone who then started to take a. But he was too proud. He died in the forest. Then one devotee came to the village, did some Namah program. Dancing like a Maharashtra. This way. The whole village. They're very blissful. Keep that program till late in the night. We got up in the morning, they saw. Oh no, he's gone. You should have warned him. The sport is tired. They brought their guns and went into the forest. Follow in his footsteps. Deeper and deeper in the forest. Deeper, deeper in the forest. And they heard in the distance a sound. What is this sound? It was a part of. They got closer. They heard that the holy champion. They came closer and closer. Closer and closer. Looked through the forest trees. I saw an amazing sight. Never seen before. Never heard of before. The animals. He was chanting Hare Krishna and animals were dancing. The tigers and the deer were dancing with each other. The bears were dancing. All animals were dancing. He doesn't need our help. He doesn't need any guns. He conquered their heart by chanting Hare Krishna. So you understood the story. This story has an analogy. Just like Naomuni is giving analogy to King Parchini Bali Shah. So this way. Sometimes Bhakti Siddhan Sartama tell the story. It was completely analogy. And the text. Whether the listeners could figure out the real meaning of the analogy. Had its meaning externally. But what was the inner meaning? When the young carpenter was going to the forest. And he met the old carpenter. What is this like? Ladies first? Yes. He met the bona fide spiritual master. He met a guru. That bonified guru. Guru advises what to do, what not to do. Unserviceous disciple. Then when a carpenter, he was sawing, cutting the wood in the forest and a tiger came. What is this like? Who can answer? Who's the man that can answer this? Material desires. Masya. The tiger is like the lusty desire is suddenly attacking. And the carpenter. Who is the carpenter? What process of yoga? What process of life? Yeah, they're doing mystic yoga. Suddenly the senses are attacking and he cannot respond. It gets taken over by the senses. The mystic yogis are not engaging their senses in Krishna service. Then there's the villagers with their guns. Who are the villagers with the guns? What process are you by? The process of karma. By our. Regulated by our sex gratification. Following some scriptural rules. This is like a karma. We're always in fear. We're always afraid in the material world. We're not free of fear. So they have their mystic mirror, their guns and their. They're afraid. And because then they fight off the danger with some kind of scriptural Sanskritification. Who is the devotee? Who first? Who's doing first? Okay, okay. Lord Chaitanya. Devotee. Devotee of the Lord. So the devotee, what are all these animals? Right. Same thing. Material desires. So how did this devotee control the material desires, engage their senses and wish their service? All the animals who are chanting and dancing. So they were all controlled. Anything else? Thank you very much. I figured it out. That he would tell some story and then he would use that as an example. Another similar story, that there was a young student. He had got his degrees in Sanskrit and he. He was going back home after getting his PhD. So his village was on other side of the jungle. One farmer told him, don't go in the jungle. There's a dangerous tiger there. Coming at this is tiger. I'm a Brahmin. What's the problem? Tiger. Brahmanas. I thought we're supposed to help human beings get back to God, not become tiger food. Anyways, I know Sanskrit. You know Sanskrit? I don't know Sanskrit. I just know that tigers are dangerous. Once you go around the forest and go on the others, you get to your village very safely. Go through the villages. Bagra. Bagra. Now they use some medicine in the west. They call Bagra. That's the Sanskrit name of tiger. This means very powerful. Well, they eat people. See, they eat people. The farmer Said go around by the outside of the forest. So proud of his learning. What do I have to rainbow tiger for? I'm a Sanskrit. They went into the forest while he's in the forest. The time you attacked him and judged his little tension. Oh, there's another meaning of tiger I forgot. He lives by eating others. Who's the tailor and who is the farmer? And who's the young scholar? Ganny? Some kind of puffed up disciple. He's pretty much what he's. Disciple who? Someone who's got too much material knowledge and they don't want to listen to the spiritual knowledge. Sometimes you do the right thing or the wrong thing. He was so proud he wanted to do the wrong thing. Sometimes we can think of so many reasons to do the wrong thing. It's very simple to do the right thing like this the scholar did the wrong thing Being too puffed up by his material knowledge, speculative knowledge. He didn't take the simple truth and as a result he lost everything. So like this are many interesting stories, you know that we. Some of them have little Bengali sutra names. There's one story called the son was taught by his father how to do the pujas. But the son was actually atheist. But he couldn't find a job. So since he know how to do puja he got a job for some rich man to worship his dearly deeds. So he would sit every day to the pujas but he was totally atheistic. I met one priest once, Tommy was an atheist Social work. So he was in the church. I was pretty surprised. Atheist priests me all kinds. So anyway this was also an atheist preach. So somebody once came up and gave a bag of peanuts and a shell. But she didn't bother to offer the peanut. How can I eat the goodness shell? Oh, I have to break these shells. Then the owner of the temple came. He's hearing inside the temple smashing of peanuts. He doesn't watch my hand looks to the window. Oh my God. Diva. Diva. What are you doing? Smashing peanuts with the holy Shali Atheist demon. Do not base it. Keep them on end. Open the door. Submitting the guy. Get out of there your nonsense demon. What's wrong with you? Pray. So that story was called Shaligram Diya Padanbana Shaligam. Everyone knows Diya means with and bama means breaking peanuts with the Shaligam. So when Sanyasi wanted to take the car to go and buy some medicine for himself in those days that one car is very expensive. Or do something using Krishna's energy for his own sense Realification. Everybody knew this story. You would say you are doing shaling. You're using Krishna's energy to break your peanuts for your sense gratification. Using Krishna for your sense gratification. Like this. He would use these different upper kyans. Different examples. Also the drive point. Drive home his point. Now I was thinking that this story also reminds us here that Puranchana, he was a good king. He was doing anything alright. But somehow he got under the mode of passionate ignorance. And he went astray doing the wrong things like that. In the Chaitanya Bhagavad is mentioned about two problems. Born in a good Brahmin family. But somehow they had bad association and they became very big demons. Know who I'm talking about? They're actually born in Brahmin families. But they became so evil. So evil. Once I saw drama of Jagari Madhya in Bengal. Old blind man being helped by his granddaughter. Beautiful 16 year old girl. 16. I don't know. Like a young girl. Give me some alms. Give me some donation. When I somehow came across, I will give you a good donation. Old man to death. Innocent guy. This is an old blind man. Kicked him, kicked him till he died. Then they raped the daughter. This was the kind of people they were not ordinary bad guys. They were like evil, evil, horrible demonic people. They had a copy of Manasamhita. They read out. Okay, today what's it we're going to do? Okay, There's a killing of you know the Guru. That's let's find the Guru. They look at one of the worst sins in all time. And they do those how many sins they can break. That's why they were so sinful. That in the highest of pious they already have the architects working on a special hell just for them. They had already gone over the ordinary health. They were really bad guys. You all know how they were delivered by Lord. The Lord Nanda beg Kali. There will be so many evil people. We should to kill them and kill everybody. Let's deliver them. Then Samai Jagai got to his senses and he pulled back his brother and said Shah stop. Because he's not an ordinary person. When the kinam dad said this guy caused me to believe. Does that mean I won't give you love of Krishna? So somehow the two of them surrendered. Beg for shelter, beg for forgiveness. So then Lord Chitan told him take a bath and again come. So like this the two were initiated and forgiven. By the initiation process they were free from all of their sins. So in the Yamaluk and All these architects working on the special hells and everything. Wait a minute. Stop. Something happened for all their sins by Lord. It was like big, wow, you know, that's so much bad karma. Freed from all of it. And they went to Yamaraj to tell him, freed from all their karma. So how much karma did they have? They put it in writing and take out warehouses after warehouses. When I heard all the details, how sinful they were, how. How they were delivered by Lord Chaitanya, he fell unconscious. They went and tried to awaken him. They couldn't wake him up. With water fanning, they told Nubian, navaraj is unconscious. What happened? They explained to him what happened then. He's not faint there. He's an ecstasy. So then they started to chant Hare Krishna. Hare Krishna. And the whole Yamaloka, everyone was chanting Hare Krishna. Start dancing with Lord Shiva. All the staff, the Yamadutas, all the clerks, everybody in Yamaloka was chairing Hare Krishna and dancing. Reminds me of that. Everybody's chanting, rejoicing. Mother committed a great apparatus against you. I beat you with a wine bottle. I caused you to bleed. Please forgive me for my offense. What can I do? How do I act this offense? I was the one that struck you, not Jagger. So I committed this offense. The Lord in heaven said, well, you see, for me, you're just like a little child, just like a mother. You're like my baby. Mother holds the baby in the lab. Sometimes the baby kicks, the mother hits the mother. Mother doesn't take any offense. The dinner was so merciless. Saying that taking a wine bottle and smashing it over his head was like a little bit. I caused so many offenses to innocent dambasis. I murdered people. I raped people. I did so many simple things. I. Innocent. How do I get freed from that offense? Yes, that's offensive. He said, okay, what you can do is you build a bathing gap to facilitate people to obey them against. By helping people to bathe in the Ganges, helping them in their spiritual life, you will get forgiven for your offenses to others. So the hottest time of the year, April, May, when the Gange is very low. With his. With the. With the shovels and spades and different digging instruments, he dug and created a bathing God. Took the stones, put them in place. With this strong body, he was doing all this intensive hard work. So then he would get forgiven for his offenses. It showed how he was a completely changed person, though. So he made this bathing stairway. We called God in India. This became famous Madhai God. There was Mahaprabhu God, Barakmanu God. There were different gods. And one of them was Madhai God, the bathing God made by Maday for atoning for his offenses to the innocent people there. They live by the side of the Ganges. They would chant their Japa every day. They would go to the Gyanchis chanting and dancing. The tears would be falling of love for Krishna would fall from their eyes. King Puranjana, he was also doing the wrong. He's going to be doing the wrong things now then Kshatriya also. Kshatriya is supposed to be highest person. One of the Brahmin Satyas and Vaishyas that we just are twice born. Are supposed to act according to the scriptures. He was going to be doing get carried away and see what's going to happen. I'm not going to give you the details for you tomorrow. He was allowed to go the hunt in the forest, but he got carried away. He's going to go way overboard. So like that. In this material world, how many people are there that actually get carried away and do sinful things? They don't even realize they're doing sinful things. Eating meat, gambling, intoxication. So much bad karma they're producing for themselves. They're very proud, don't care for anything. They're just doing whatever they want. They don't realize what their karmas are producing for themselves. Somehow maybe I probably don't have you, but maybe you know somebody that maybe committed some sin before. So like that only by the mercy of Lord Chaitanya and Gynanda. As a possible to get so much to get delivered so easily. Now in this. So trying to different programs to awaken people. Now people are more like ecological green, ecological favorable, things like that. Rather than just saying the four principles, somebody could present it that my animal killing. This is causing so much pain to people, to living entities. And so much pollution for the environment. People lose their mercy. People still like mercy. Reading the newspaper how innocent. How people are being killed by terrorists and by savage warlords in Africa and different things. So if you present it a little more intellectually, a little more logically, then people may accept it easier. Unrestricted sex life is unclean. And that's why AIDS and so many diseases are being spread. That it will be to practice a safe, clean, religious kind of sex life. Sometimes, by some material logic, people can start to appreciate what we're saying. It's not. Not a bad thing. It's very good, actually. Usually people don't really want to hear unless they have developed the taste by chanting. People chant ay Krishna and actually their nature changes and they want to do the right thing. So this is how we can make the world a better place to live in. We can change the nature of people. Make them good. Make them not only good, but make them transcendental. Thank you all very much. I want to thank all of you for your wonderful participation in this camp and somehow allowing me to come here. Hope I'll be able to see you many more times. Thank you for watching our videos.
