2008 || Śrīmad Bhāgavatam (8.15.1-2) Class #JayapatakaSwamiArchives

A 2008 audio lecture by Jaya Pataka Swami (Śrīmad Bhāgavatam commentary on 8.15.1–2) that narrates the story of Bali Maharaj and related Puranic episodes to teach about guru respect, types of devotion (niskama vs. sakama), and the spiritual significance of ritual observances tied to specific months (Falguna/Damodar, Vaishaka, Purushottam). The speaker uses examples (Indra/Brihaspati, Aditi, a poor Brahmana) to emphasize that devotional service (bhakti) and prescribed sacrifices/yajnas lead to auspicious results, while neglect or improper guidance can cause downfall.
The king preached it, wanted to know about Bali Maharaj. So he asked such a parishit. Maharaj inquired, the supreme personality of Godhead is the proprietor of everything. Why did he beg three paces of lamb from Bali Maharaj like a poor man? And we got the gift for which he had begged. Why did he nonetheless arrest Bali Maharaj? I'm very much anxious to know the mystery of these contradictions. Goswami said that Bali Maharaj lost all his opulence and died in a fight against the Devas. At that time, Shukacharya brought him back to life. So then he accepted Sukacharya as his guru and he began to serve with great faith, offering everything that he had. So they engaged Bali Maharaj. He was king of the demons. He's the grandson of Pariksh of Prahlat. He's born in a devotee family, but is also Prahlada, son of Hiranya. Kashipu was king of the demons. So it's a demon dynasty. So demons are generally opposed to Indra. The Bali was fighting with Indra, as you know that they are kind of half brothers in the sense that Kasyampa is the forefather of both the demon line and the Deva line. From Diki come the Devas and from Diki come the demons. So they're actually all supernatural beings. They're more than human beings. They are human form, but they have not more powers than a human being. There are celestial beings, but they're the demons and the devotees, the Asuras and the suras. So generally the Asuras are devotees of Vishnu. And generally the Asuras are against Vishnu. But in this case, Bali Maharash was not against such effect. Sugaracharya, the descendants of Bhingu, they taught him to do Vishnu puja. And they engaged him in a special yagya known as Viswajit so that by performing this sacrifice he can conquer the universe. So Bali was worshipping Vishnu, but it was not pure Bhakti. He wanted to conquer the universe. He had some material objective to achieve. There's different kinds of devotees. Some devotees worship the Lord purely just for the Lord's pleasure. They want to achieve love of Godhead. They want to go back to Godhead. And they're called Niskam bhaktas, desireless devotees. They have no material desire. There are some who respect the Lord, worship the Lord, but they have got some material desires they want to get fulfilled also from the Lord. So generally they are called Sakam, Bhakta Devordians who still have got some material desires to fulfill from the Lord. In the devas are also called soaka ambatu. So in this case, the king of the demons, Babi, he was also worshipping Vishnu. Devas worshipping Vishnu. So which side does Vishnu take? Then what happened was Indra committed an apparatus against his guru. See, sometimes we don't see the guru so often and it's come. They travel around a lot. Devotees have different spiritual masters. Sometimes they come in the year, they get some association. But in the case of Indra, his guru was there. Brihaspati. She was seeing him every day. Every day Brihaspati would come to the royal court and give his guidance. He'd be there. So whether the guru comes every day or whether it comes once in a year, whether it comes sometimes, whatever it is, whenever you see the guru, you should offer him respect, isn't it? Prabhupada will come to Mayapur. He'd be there for three or two months sometimes. But every day, every time we see him, we have to pay our obeisances, show him respect. If you see a sannyasi first time in the day, you should offer obeisances. If you see the guru, every time you see the guru, you should offer obliges. In this case, Brihaspati entered into the royal court of Indra. Then Indra, he's coming every day, you know, he didn't offer any respect. Gurudev said by ways and says he didn't offer any respect to the guru. Is that correct? What do you think? So like in our Vaishnav culture, every devotee who is initiated become a prabhu. And any sannyasi or very senior, a type of guru figure, Prana Praksa, we call him Maharaj. Left for one Diksha guru. Diksha Guru is also, you can say Guru Maharaj. So it's etiquette. In this case, Guru Maharaj came, he didn't react. He didn't respond, just sat there. So Briyaspati noticed that he's become so much proud. He's Indra because I am guiding him. I'm blessing him. I'm giving him all the mercy. I'm coming here every day now. He not offering me respect. So better I go leave him on his own. Sad VHB left. As soon as he left, the Nigra thought, uh oh, I offended him. I didn't respect him. When he came, he ran after him to find him to apologize. But it was too late. The offense was done. He couldn't find Bryaswati biyaspati's power is more than Indra's. So he disappeared and hid himself. Indra is looking everywhere. How can I get forgiveness from my Guru? But Brihan's party was out of sight. Couldn't find it. Meanwhile, Bali Maharaj is doing the research at Yagya worshipping. He is very faithful to his Guru. So when he heard Indra lost the Guru Kripa, did he know, this is my chance. Without the protection of Guru, he'll be weaker. So then Bali declared war on the day of the second. Very important things to know. Because even Bali Maharaj he was attacking now. Bali Maharaj had a great potency, great war, huge military arrangement. Because then they somehow found Brihaspati. And they begged what we should do now? He said, well now because he's followed his Guru's order very carefully, performed the Vishnu Yagna, he's become very powerful. So you won't be able to defeat him. He's blessed by his Guru. He said, neither you nor your men can conquer the most powerful Bali. No one but the supreme personality of Godhead can conquer him. For he is now equipped with supreme spiritual power. Brahma teachas. As no one can stand before Yamarja, no one can now stand before Bali Maharaj. So told them, you leave the heavenly planets no use in fighting. You got so many benedictions of the Brahmanasa. Now he is very powerful. So the demigods all took forms of animals and different. It is disappeared. So Bali, he just came into the heavenly kingdom. There were no opposition. He just took over. Another interesting thing is once he got upon the throne of Indra, he was immediately engaged in performing Aswamiya Yagyas Maya Supracharya Tangishwa, the Imantisham Vigavasi Shavat Sarah Satina Yamilanam Anubratamaya. The prophet explains in the purport. So the descendants of Bhrigu decided that although Bali Maharaj was situated on the throne of Indra, he would not be able to stay there unless he performed such sacrifices. Therefore, they advised Maharaj Bali to perform at least as many of Samantha Yages as Indra. Indra performed a hundred of Samanthas. I told him he also do 100. The idea you become an Indra king of heaven. It takes a lot of good karma for someone to be a prime minister, to be a king, to be a priest, it takes a lot of good karma. But if they don't do Yagyas, if they don't do any pious activity, they can fall under grace. They Spend up all their good karma from some previous lives. They have good karma, spend it up, then they're out. So the system was that kings would always perform sacrifices to build up their good karma to remain a king. So what to speak of? Balimaraj is now king of Heaven. How much good karma he's burning up every second to be in that opulence, in that position, that power. So if you want to stay here, you decide you have to do Ya jas. You can't stay here for nothing. So this is also important for everyone. They all want to have a good fortune in this world. Except for the Grihastas, their dharmas. To give charity and to perform sacrifices for the Brahmacharis. They go begging. They do austerities, the Grihastas. And after doing so, many austerities. But they do more charity and sacrifice. So in those daysomeras or Pugnacarmas, it's the most difficult Yagya sacrifice. But the spiritual activities are even a greater sacrifice than Asomedas. In fact, it says if somebody compares Channing Hare Ka or visiting Vrindavan or Mayapur to Asumeri Yages, he's a big offender. Asumeda habit only gives good karma. But Chandi, Hare Krishna went to the Holy Baptist. Not only gives good karma, but it gives spiritual benefits which cannot be given by any kind of pious activity. So then Bali Maharashtra started performing sacrifices. He became very brilliant. He had the favor of the Brahmanas. He was doing sacrifices. He taught himself to be very satisfied. Now I'm king of Heaven, king of the three worlds. And so he was enjoying his kingdom, his power, his opulence. Meanwhile, Aditi, the mother of Indra, she was unhappy that her son got dethroned. So she actually did a Yadya. She did a sacrifice called the Pyo Granta. By doing this sacrifice, which she got from her husband, Kasyapa. Then she got the blessing that Vishnu would become her son. She was now she was exiled from the kingdom. She approached her husband how to get how to Saudis. So then Kasyalpa gave her some instructions. So when the mother is going and praying for her children, she said, how powerful is the illusory energy of Lord Vishnu by which the entire world is bound by affection for children. What is this material body made of? 5 elements. It is different from my spirit soul. Indeed, the spirit soul is completely different from the material elements of which the body is made. But because of bodily attachment, one is regarded as a husband or a son. These elusive relationships are caused by misunderstanding, my dear Aditi engage in devotional service to the supreme personality of Godhead who is the master of everything, who can subdue everyone's enemies, who sits within everyone's heart. Only that supreme person Krishna or Vasudeva can bestow all auspicious benedictions upon everyone. For he is the spiritual master of the universe. The supreme person I got here who is very merciful to the poor will fulfill all your desires for devotional service untamed is infallible. Any other method than devotional service Bhakti Yoga is useless. That is my opinion. So then she asked how she can worship Ka Then she gave the system to worship in the Falguna month as the month Lord Chaitanya appears. Gave her mantras that she should chant Gave her spiritual duties she should perform. I'm not going to go through all the testimony I got to finish everything on our she was worshipping her deity. She was fasting, she was offering flowers, she was bathing, she was drinking milk. 12 day sacrifice first 12 days milk only milkshake takes. Then on the 13th day Rabbi Sheikh Havishnu Hanshamrita the day is also 13th, Friday the 13th. This gives the whole system. Let's pray that this one get this to chapter 16. What is the Praya Rata? She should distribute prasadam to everyone. Said prasadam shall be given to everyone. He didn't have any of this. Poor men, blind men, non devoting, non Brahmana. Everyone should get Vishnu Prashada. Then you should take your prasada so from Pratiphat to travel the seat. So it's in the Vedas there are different sacrifices given. Just like there's normally three holy months in the year. In Iskcon we all observe the Dhamudar month. She said to me anything you perform in that month is a hundred times a normal day. The palace is also 100 times. So people do we offer lambs, we do bathing charity. Different special. That month is supposed to strictly be vegetarian. If you're not already even the vegetarians don't take Urdao because of its high protein As a token. There's also another month which is also the Davidara is more highly spiritually. Demetrius there's another one called Vaishaka. The Bengalis that's the first month of the year. Some parts of India they have Vaishakas on the other month. But Vaishaka month which this Vaishaka month is also mentioned Padma Purana this month also you get 100 times the benefit. This month also should be vegetarian. This month especially for giving Charity, for coming to temple, for worshipping Vishnu, for dancing before the ladies. And tonight we can dance before the Devi's Padma brother mentioned that there was once a Brahmana. He had no money and he had no children in his ipur. A very good wife. He was frustrated because he wanted children, he wanted wealth. So then he decided to go and get a job, do some business or something in some distant place. But then she said, right now I don't have children. And if you go, I won't have a husband either. And anyway, children. There's five kinds of children. Some children you get because of bad karma. So they get the children who's causing you trouble because of some previous bad karma you get. Sometimes you get a child who's an enemy. Someone says the enemy wants to become your child. This could cause your trouble. Being a child, you can cause more trouble. Parents and attacks. Then there's also the sort of satchu. Then there's the bad karma. Then there's also you get a debtor child. You didn't pay a debt to somebody in a previous life. And then so then in order to get paid back, you become your child. So the whole life they're always demanding. Their mood is what they get from their parents. They do not think what they can get. I guess their debtor is coming to collect. So these three kinds of children only causing trouble for the parents. Then there's the good children. Sukutra, sukutri. They serve their parents. They do their spiritual, their religious. They're very kind, they're very considerate. So one kind of good category is there. They're respectful to their parents. And then there's wudasin. And they don't care. They're not interested, they're not against, they're not for. They're not at all interested in the family situation. They're not also very good, but nothing bad. And they're not out to get you any detached. So the wife was such a wise lady. She said, why do you want children? What's the guarantee? We're going to get a soup putra. You get one of the other ones to be more of a headache. We tried. Krishna didn't give us, we should be satisfied. But the husband won't listen. No, he wanted. So then she advised, why don't you go to see Vishwamitra? So our Vishisha, the sister, is nearby visiting the great Rishi. He knows all the three times you go and see him. So he went to see him and asked him why. He said that I don't have any money, I don't have any children. What is this for? And then he said, well, in your previous life you were a sutra. But you did business. You kept all your money stashed away. Never spent it on your wife, never spent it on your children. You didn't take care of them properly. As a result, when you died, nobody knew where you had hidden the money. So they also rest of their life they were in poverty. So because of your bad activities, your selfishness, your miserliness, this life you have no money and no children. Then she said, they said I was a sutra lancer. How I became a Brahmana in this life? And how did I get such a good wife? She's very intelligent, very Krishna conscious. He said, well, your whole life is pretty much a void. But for three days you invited some devotee to your house in the month of Baishak and you served him. So because you did some spiritual activity a little bit in the month of Baisha for three days you could be born as a Brahmin and get a good wife. But I don't see anything else significant in your whole life. So what's the solution for me now? Well, now is the month of Baishak. He got seven days left. You better start practicing spiritual activities very carefully. And then? So the last seven days of Vaishak he did the Ka conscious activities and chanted and did different spiritual activities, worshiped Vishnu, gave him charity and things. And then whatever he had. So then after that he got children, got money and at the end of life he went back to Godhead. So people generally like Bhaishak. It's a good month. Good for building up. You get a boost. And then also Magha month. Magha has also got some specials in every day these three months. Especially Baishak and Dhammadom. So we observe Dhammadan has come. But we don't do so much Baishak. But it's also very good month. But then guys also that once in three years comes the month of Purushottam. The partner was asking where your devotees. Why is it that we face so many difficulties? Then Krishna told judiciary. He said the problem is he didn't observe the month of Purushottam. Why doesn't he? Most people on this month somehow or another came into me. Then people they criticized her. They called the Avika mass, Mala mass. Nothing auspicious should be performed in this month. Mala means also like Mala stool. So like touching stool is bad. This month is bad luck. It's like people say Friday 13th is bad luck. But the spiritual activity is supposed to be good. So this month Purushottam is very good for spiritual activities. But how it happened is explained in the Puranas that the month was very frustrating. She came to Vishnu crying. So people criticized me. They know what kind of every day of the week, every month of the year, people are doing holy things, they're doing spiritual things. But in my month nobody wants to do anything auspicious. They called me the Sudman. So what kind of existence you gave to me? I want to die. I want to die. I want to die. What is the use of living? As if people just call you stool. No one wants to. What is the use of being a moth without any spiritual significance? So she's crying and crying and going up to visions of issues that wealth. Come with me. We're going to see Lord Krishna. He can solve this problem. So then Vishnu Narayan went up to Krishna Loka. She said, follow behind me. It's so bright. She can't also see because of the effulgence. The highest spiritual planet. I went there to Vishaloka. There Krishna greeted Narayana and said oh you come here. How can I help you? And she said, see this is this extra month, the lunar calendar we follow. Lunar calendar is 355 days a year and the solar calendar is 365. So what happens is after three years you are one month behind the solar calendar. So if you don't make an adjustment then everything. Then sometime we'll have Dhammadar. It will be in July, sometime in May. Over the years it will just be shifting. I think the Islamic Ramazan they don't have this adjustment. So it keeps shifting throughout the year. But the Vedas have put this adjusting month. Once in three years one additional month is added. Then it brings us back in line with 365, 355. 10 days times 3 is 30. So one 30 day month is added to readjust. So this extra month she's a personality. So she was crying to Krishna also Krishna said, Krishna Loka, nobody is crying. Why are you crying? What's happening here? She said, she has no name. She is the one protecting you. Please give her protection. Surrendered you. She fell at his feet and surrendered. So Krishna said, okay, I'm going to give to Europe. I accept your shelter. I give you my shelter and your month is going to be not different for me. Any activity performed in that month I directly accept. And if anyone doesn't respect you, you'll be damned. So like this he gave a special blessing to Purushodhamma and the Kaujubarana. Your new name is Purushotta Mah Maas. And you are 16 times more powerful than any other Mah. More powerful than Vaishaka, more powerful than Damodar. The advance one should also of course be vegetarian. Should offer worship to the deities. Should bathe in the holy rivers. I don't know what holy rivers you have here. But there's one secret though. I read in the Padma Purana that if you show lovely Ganga three times that's also get the benefit of bathing in the Ganges. So that one when you take a morning shower you can just show Ganga, Ganga, Ganga, Ganga, Ganga, Ganga. You feel big. Sri Krishna said, anyone who observes worships me increases their devotional activities. In the month of Purushottam they'll live very peacefully, very happily in the material world. And at the end of life they come back to me. They're more also. But then. So then Sakrishna said you didn't observe for the short term month and that's why you're facing all these difficulties. So now it's coming. You should observe and how you break all this jinx. So this year is the Purushotta month coming just in a couple of months. So it's a good time that time. In fact we do. I don't know much if you do this here. But in Malaysia we started a Dhamadar month program where we go and visit the people in the month of Damadar. We get so auspicious. If devotees visit the house, we take a Kirtan group and go there. Give them a picture of Damadar Krishna. Do an IP with the whole family of Damadar. Give out some prasadam. It's a little half hour miniature like Namah program. And do many houses in one night. So they have 60 Namatas in their temple. They did a goal. They wanted to do 1008 dhammata of pujas. And they have quotes from the different Puranas. And how by worshiping Dhammadar in this month thousands of forefathers are delivered. And so many wonderful blessings. Are there so many people, Neighbors also. Why don't you do it in my house? We can also. Who wants to be deprived? So they did it. It was so popular that they did 1,500 pujas in the Dhammada month. And that so many new people were brought into the Congress. So many 10 sitters, you know, they got blessed. So now I told them also to start for the Baisharam month. Maybe this year they'll also do for Purushokhan. The Purushokana especially says to receive devotees in the house is very auspicious. There's also a whole history about Draupadi that actually we don't have enough time to tell that pastime. But anyway there's a whole Palestine that how she also disrespected the Purushottamata. That's why she didn't have any husband in the previous life. And she was worshipping Lord Shiva and asked Shiva, give me a husband, give me a husband. Give me a husband. Give me a husband, give me a husband. I went husband. I went on his wife five times. She said, you said once was enough. But you said five times. So next life you'll get five husbands. Because Gopali took shelter Krishna. Krishna forgave her for offense of Purushok 10 months other than the previous night. She couldn't get husband because she had offended the Purushotan month. So there's a whole lot of history about it. So here also like there's Tama, there's a time, there's a place, a system. So Aditji did that for Prayaavanta. In her case it was the Falun Mat. Then she. So she got the blessing of having Vamladev. So shouldn't have so many childhood pastimes. He's born Amelia that had a deer skin and Jesso Brahmana dwarf. And he. So they gave him the Kamandalu, the Danda, everything. Then he went with. He went to see Bali Maharaj. So then he asked for the three steps of land. Bali said, Tamara, you build the whole universe. I give you a big planet. I give you much more land and give you a nice wife, arrange a big house for you, everything. We can't be satisfied with three steps of land. We won't be satisfied with whatever we get. So then sister means you should offer three drops of water. See, he says. He said, okay, I'll give you. Then Sukhra Chai said, no, this is actually Vishnu. He's come in disguise. You shouldn't give him. If you give him three steps, he'll take everything. He said actually, but I've already given my word. Well, there's some times when you can lie. He gave all this some Mitti shastra, moral shastra that sometimes it's good to lie when you're arranging a marriage. One of the eight reasons. If you lie when you're to save your life, when you're about to lose a lot of property. So you're going to lose everything. You can say, I'm sorry. People may say, okay, he was a miserly guy. He promised, he took it back. But it's better than losing everything. So the guru was advising Bali said, I got to be the king of the three worlds because I worship Bishu. And now Vishnu has come. He said, I promised. I gather a few steps of men. You said, don't give. So I don't understand. I can't follow you. When Sukharacharya got angry and cursed him. I curse you to lose everything. Said, if you don't have a spiritual guru, it's dangerous, right? He wants a not a spiritual guru. He was guru but in a cultural sense. In a Brahminical sense, not spiritual. He also had an interesting one. He got angry. You know why he's not following me? He said, curse him. Generally the guru doesn't curse the disciple. The guru said, well, we share of the society of the disciple. When Ms. Gains, he cursed. That may be one reason why Bali had to get tied up and lose everything. But then Bishna gave back more than what he had. This are good examples that if the guru tells you not to serve Vishnu, if he tells you not to follow Prabhupada and Guru Parampa, we shouldn't follow him. This guy is not guru. Guru means representing the Krishna and Krishna. So in some rare cases, if the Guru gives a bad advice which is against the Shastra then we shouldn't follow. So Bali didn't follow then. Of course you know that Brahmadeva expanded into gigantic form Trivikra. One step he took the lower worlds. One step he took the upper world. And he pierced up, bombed the shell of the universe. And the Ganga came in washing his feet. Shiva took the Ganga on his head. So it went scattered gravity with his hair. No Ganga is flowing even in our planet. From gold down through Allahabad and Manares and Mayapur. Then the third step. He said he took the whole Bali's kingdom in two steps. Is the word. I put the third step. The word of Bali said, I put the third step. So he's the example of Atman. Samarpanam. Atman who gives, surrenders himself to the Lord. So he surrenders to the Lord. So then he's the property of the Lord. No, the Lord wants to tie him out or wants to free him. Whatever he wants to do, he's now Lord's property. We went this year, they're Panchipuram. They have 14 very important Vishnu temples there many other Shiva temples but there is Vishnu 14 Divya Dashas. So one of the temples we heard it's a 35 foot high tubic ground. So they said that Bali Maharaj was praying to Vishnu that you put your foot on my head. I couldn't see your form. The footsteps are all you can see. Big foot. So I never got a very good Darshana. So if you give me show me the form how you are touching the universe. The Lord manifested this form again that became the Dee form also this Leela. And it's a 35ft high chibikra and the foot is going out 24ft. Biggest deity I ever seen. Have you seen how many Sarah deity can she Puram Tribitna. You also saw it. He was on a safari with me. So we had 200 devotees. 215 devotees who went from 40 different countries. Some from the UK also. And every year we go after gor Purnima for 20 days to different holy places and do a combined pilgrimage plus a preaching. So we went this year to South India. Thank you for watching our videos.
