Lecture (Jan 27, 2008) by Jaya Pataka Swami on Srimad Bhagavatam (9.15.25) and cow protection. The speaker interprets the Parashurama–Kartavirya Arjuna–Jamadagni episode (theft of Kamadenu) to emphasize the spiritual and practical importance of goraksha (cow protection), linking scriptural injunctions (Bhagavad Gita) to contemporary issues: dairy industry practices in America and India, organic/ahimsa milk initiatives, economics of keeping non-slaughtered cows, and social/environmental ethics. The talk includes anecdotes about ISKCON farms, cow products (urine, ghee), and debates about consuming milk when cows are slaughtered.
Sam Translation by his divine grace Karta of Irjarjuna thought that Jamadagni was more powerful and wealthy than himself because of possessing a jewel in the form of a Kama dev. Therefore, he and his own men, the Hai Hayas were not very much appreciative of Jammadagni's reception. On the contrary, they wanted to possess that Kamadenu which was useful for the execution of the Agnihotra sacrifice Report Jamad Agni was more powerful than Pakaviryajuna because of performing the Agnihotra Yagya with clarified butter received from the Kamadenu. Not everyone can be expected to possess such a cow. Nonetheless, an ordinary man may possess an ordinary cow, give protection to this animal, take sufficient mouth from it and engage the mouth to produce butter and clarify ghee, especially for performing the Agnihotra Yajna. This is possible for everyone. Thus we find that in the Bhagavad Gita what Krishna advises Gorakshya the protection of the cows. This is essential because if cows are cared for properly, they will surely supply sufficient milk. We have practical experience in America that are various Iskcon farms. They are giving proper protection to the cows and receiving more than enough milk. In other farms the cows do not deliver as much milk as in our farms because our cows know very well that they are not going to kill them. We are not going to kill them, they are happy and they give ample help. Therefore, this instruction given by Lord Krishna Goraksha is extremely meaningful. The whole world must learn from Ka how to live happily without scarcity simply by producing food grains. Anand Bhavanti Bhutani and giving protection to the cows. Goraksha Krishi Goraksha Vanity Vaishya Karma Sovavajam those who belong to the third level of human society, meaning the mercantile people, must keep land for producing food grains and giving protection to cows. This is the injunction of the Bhagavad Gita. In the matter of protecting the cows, millionaires will protest. But in answer to them we may say that since Ka gives stress to cow protection, those who are kindly need to eat the flesh of uninformed animals like hogs, dogs, goats and sheep. But they shall not touch the life of the cows, for this is destructive to the spiritual advancement of human society. So this is the Srimad Bhagavatam 9th Canto 15th chapter text 25 in the matter of Parsuram, the Lord's warrior incarnation spoken today the 26th 28 to 27 on 7th January 2008 of Krista, Abdul and 521 of Gora Abdul Aribal. But this chapter is dedicated to Parsharam. The rest of the chapter describes how he annihilated this Kartavir Jarjuna who had captured Ramana. Because he defeats Rahim then Ramana gets released. Then Ramana creates a lot of Brahmasto. But anyway this verse is not focusing on that aspect but on the Kamadenu. We had once a cow in my emperor called Karma Denu because it was always giving milk. Even if it didn't have any calf, it was giving milk. So people come from far and wide and see that. But he had such a common thing that not only did he give milk, he gave anything he wanted. Was like. It was like what do you call Kaplaviksha Desire tree. So he was getting all the things he needed especially clarified butter and performing fire yagyas. Karta Virjuna it said because it shows here he said devotee he was worshipping Dattatreya. He got all these blessings and mystic powers because of being a devotee of Vishnu. But then somehow he got proud and he was offending Jamadagni who was the great Brahmana and stealing his cow. Even America cow theft is a big crime from the lisp in the Wild west. If you are a cow thief, cattle thief they called him. But what's that considered a very serious thing. So he somehow didn't respect this Brahman Jammadagni as he wanted to have the Kamuden himself. He thought he should have everything. Probably if he had begun from Jamung. But sharpeners don't bake. Brahmins bake. So why they can imagine. I don't know if there's any way he could regard legitimately. But what he did was definitely not correct. He stole the cow. And that was a big mistake. That was a very big mistake. The Parsurah. He became very angry, disrespected my father. He stole his Kamadenu. And then he went to Kartavir Jajuna's camp with his bow and arrow and his chopper. And then Karter Vrajuna sort of okay, trying to placate or something. He got who is this guy coming to fight me? He sent something. I forget how many. There are so many Ashwahilis. 17 Ashwahilis. Each Ashwahini is a military balance consisting of 21,870 chariots and elephants. 1 lakh 9,350 infantry soldiers, 65,610 cavalry horses plus foot soldiers. So he sent 17 of those that means that something like 2,3 million soldiers to attack Parasuram and Parasura at the speed of the might. He didn't work at ordinary speed, it worked at the speed of vine. He completely chopped up and wiped out 3 million soldiers. Then Karter virtually came and attacked him with his thousand arms he took 500 bows and shot 500 to shoot 500 arrows at him at one time. But with one bow working at super speed he chopped off. He broke all his bows and arrows. Then he took his chopper and cut off all his arms and cut off his head like this Par Sarah nobody to mess around with. When he went back his father told him he should be forgiving. Brahmanas are forgiving. That's our nature. He said you do devotional service and you'll get forgiven for all your you get changed. But somehow this Karthih Arjuna he was doing devotional service and then he got so pumped up he committed this great opera of stealing the cow. The Kamaneu of Shammadagni fighting with Parsuram. I mean when the gurus they had arrested, who was it? Who's going to marry their princess Samba who was the one with the daughter of Banasworth? That was Prajuma, this was Samzan. So Balaram went there to make a peace but their initial reaction was very Kshatriya kind of Ugrava. And then he took his hoe, his plow and was dragging the whole city of Astinapur to the Juhura. Then the leaders came out and placated Bahara and gave the princess a Sambhar, a hitchhike you see. So Kartra virtue. I didn't have that present if he would have done something. Listen to Kshatriyas who are asking for death. One against 3 million people. Not exactly. Apparently a fair fight maybe more than 3 million. I'm just giving an hundred. I mean if you sit down, add up all the horses the more the better will be 17 times 100,000 would be 1.7 million and all the horses and elephants I mean at least 3 million. But yeah, more than that because it did count somehow the foot soldiers aren't included. There'll also be a lot of foot soldiers in the old. In the Akshay military science was very advanced. They had such a massive kind of military arrangement. Just there's a whole verse gives from the Mahabharata a detailed description of what Akshaymi is. Instead of being a little humble and giving back the stolen cow he just attacked Parasuram. So this set off the Saraf Parasuram taming the Kshatriyas 21 times. We defeated the Kshatriyas as they were not being respectful to the Ramanas because Kshatriyas the only Ramanas were very forgiving and humble. So they didn't take any action. But the Chaityrs were mistreating them. So then Parasuram took up the matter in his own hand. So here's the beginning of it. The problem here he's testing very much about more Akshaya. Because people are so much affected by the mistreatment of the cows in America. The slaughter shot with so many antibiotics. For some people remounts become vegans for different reasons. But one of the reasons is the mistreatment of the cow. And they tell us why do you eat cow products? Since they are mistreating. Of course by not eating doesn't mean that they'll be treated any better. Maybe if you didn't have nobody bringing up, they would just slaughter them and only eat the meat. So it's better to take them out. But actually I was thinking about this like in the beginning in America they had, you know, the organic food idea was slow to take off. But now it's a multi billion dollar Jai Radha Mahara Madhatohan Sitaram Nanuman type. I was reading once how some in San Francisco there's a save the whales society and they were so powerful that any company that was whaling or doing things which were detrimental to the whales environmental then they would put them on the web or Internet that they are doing anti whale products they should be boycotting. And despite this boycotting here so many people were avoiding their products. And then they paid their money to get as they environmentally friendly business. So this society, just by this kind of a tactic they got a lot of income to pay all their executives and do whatever they're doing. Plus they saved the whale. We had some kind of thing where we had ahimsa or maybe go Russia cow milk and then promote that and give certifications that people they won't kill the cows, they'll have certain standards of dealing with them. Then people who are a little more conscious, they look at you because all the dairies wouldn't really care because if they're getting a higher price for him, somehow they won't care. People don't mind cooking. They don't. There are big companies, corporations are doing organic food not because of any love of the or you know, the environment necessarily, but because it's good money. You can sell a vegetable for, you know, a premium. So if it works out economically, America is run by economics. If it's economic, to be kind to the cow. If enough people are interested in buying up, that's not going to end up with the cow being slaughtered. How to pull it off? We hire some rehastas, some young people who are very energetic to pull it off. And I'm sure in the long run they'll be able to just like this one company, they always get plenty of funding. And now if it's a day to day product, they can start having a very big impact because they just stop taking it. But if they actually get the people to take that more of an impact, many people, they start buying ahimsimab, they start certifying dairies. Could be a way of protecting Macau and America. List the dairy house and everybody. I think devotees would be happier to take ahimsa mouth or go raksha off whatever the cow protection mouth. I was having this idea after reading about the whale. What does the whales have to do with anything? But because people are concerned with the environment, cows are something which nobody is eating well meat anyway except a few, I don't know, some Eskimos and Japanese. Japanese, Japanese cow milk is a much more bigger industry than whales. So we're allowing a cow which is a much more important animal than a whale to be killed. That's the point. The people want to eat me. But they need the bulls and the sheep and the pigs and the dogs. For as an American, nobody will eat a dog. This dog is man's best friend. In Philippines they were eating dogs. But when the Americans heard that they ate dogs, they thought this is such an offense to eat a dog that they are having it banned like this. Also that nobody should go to Philippines, they're dog eating. So they had to ban dog eating just for the American tourism. Maybe on a slide they eat it anyway but. But dog is whether it's not we should kill any animal ultimately. But if we're going to kill, at least the cow should be protected. So relatively speaking the dog is not that important than a hierarchy. Not that we're promoting that people should kill dogs, but rather if they can avoid eating meat, then eat some meat. That's not going to be very leave the cows. Even in Buddhism they have five animals which they stand really high on the part of the reincarnation letter. Cows, horses, monkeys. There's like five animals. They say maticulos. I don't remember all the firemen. So the king of Thailand, on some big occasion he releases cows and Puts them in some special cow protection area. Speaking amongst the Buddhism there's something about not killing cows. Maybe not in a direct way that we see the cow as something worshipable. Samba deva moi or something at all. Devas or the cow. But at least that is a higher reincarnation level and shouldn't be killed. Next one, next one, next one. So I'm sure somebody applied themselves to it could make a big dent once people they took it up. But cows are so nice. Like some people. They told me they were asking people where does the cow come from except in the grocery store. Supermarket. They don't even know that it's coming from a cow anymore. They're so detached from the whole this thing just comes like you know, in a container. That's it how they're treating and everything. At least our temples are fine and stuff. They don't have that much stock I don't think to make a big commercial dent. Some of the cow farms in Iskcon they don't even breed their cows because they say that if you feed the cows they'll give us milk. But then we don't need that much milk and then we'll have more baby cows and then we need more land and more food and more manpower. So instead they have maybe cows and only one cow. They grieve for the love for the lilies and the other cows they just stand barren. It's a really strange situation. More like Eden Ivy is not very far away. They are probably in the same situation. They don't have. They may not breed so many cows. They go in our farm and we have 1300 acres and they have 200 cows in New Taliban in Mississippi but only a handful are giving. No they don't. Is it otherwise they're afraid they'll be welted by. We had mori Sevak cows and the bull from the neighboring farm would jump the fence and freed them. So that was. They didn't know what to do. One night, many, many years ago the GBC at that time he took all the cows and put them in a truck and dropped them off and laid New Taliban farm like 50 cows without any permission. Nothing just I couldn't handle. So it must be that when cowboy was lying around he was seeing the cows very abundantly giving dogs. Some of these cows are like how many so big milk bags. They give gallons and gallons of milk. But somehow because they caught the fires. Prophet also said they should interface with the temples and with the community. Now we have a big community as the farmers would provide him some help. Even just for our own community that could also be an effective thing. Just the people I know even in Mayapur though that we have like we protect our cows, but the local farmers may or may not protect their cows. So like In India, maybe 10 rupees a kilo for liter for milk even that may be water, but the Rehasans don't want to pay even 12 rupees for the respond. Sometimes they are just miserly about it. Now of course I think they've worked it out. They do give them a premium. Does anybody wants the milk from our boshala? They have to pay more. It's actually if you don't slaughter the cows it costs more People are doing economics are like Oshava. If the people take the cows at the end when they get old and give money for slaughtering, which we can't do, we won't think about doing that. So then economically it doesn't work in India at least I don't know the economics in America but in India. So now we have all these cow products. Cow urine, toothpaste, massage oil, all with they're making maybe half as much. Maybe 50% of the income is from these bipolar. There's one in Karnataka, they have a big farm and they're making more products than the milk. I think Kavira told me to take 50 milliliters of 50 grams. It's about 2 ounces of cal ur every day, you see. But they say that the rubber bowls with the hump are better than the ones and the American one without. But even when I was in Vrindavan I was also going and getting the cow urine doesn't taste any different. But I don't know. They say that the hump absorbs more energy from the sun and makes the cow urine more powerful. But it's supposed to be a cure for 84, 87 different diseases. Kidney, liver. So there's a lot of things that a cow is a miraculous animal. It's given for the benefit of human society. Some very demoniac kind of sadhus. They say oh, cow meat is Sattvik. So Saul80 there's nowhere in Shastra says that cow may be satvik, but you're not supposed to eat the meat. Go Hayatya is very much deprived and but some are such bogus sadhus are there? They say no, this cow is satvik and vegan satvik. So like this we have so many aberrations in at least in India. I don't know. I don't have the statistics how many people you counted? I think that many people avoid it still. But with the McDonald's. I don't think McDonald's in India sells county only sheep and other things. Otherwise the RSS would nobody give one. Right? But in the west, what I've heard, as many of the Hindu migrants have when they go through, they need stomach, not veggies. But eat cow meat sometimes, at least that much, they should have consciousness. The cow is giving so much milk, only the calf can eat about one fourth of the milk of the cow or less, depending how much they give them. It can only take a little bit. So by nature's arrangement it produces more milk so that we can get all in all products. Get the ghee for the agnihotras, get the milk for drinking milk. This gives a higher intelligence for understanding spiritual subject matter. Get the yogurt, which is good for the flora and the digestion and health. Actually, even in India though it's very hard to get cow milk most of the time. That's how mixed with buffalo. Buffalo milk makes the brain dull. Farmer said buffalo take the yogurt, but cow take the milk. But now it's all mixed up in those big daddies. So you don't know what you're getting. This is only common and possible. But so they also indicated America, there's no buffalo here as pure cow. But then they are mistreating that cow. Ultimately we should put some Hindus and the environmentalists and the people who are concerned cow writes take a stand and to make some alternative like hymns and out. I mean it's an idea. But you can think of some other way. I don't know organic milk they have now at least that means they're not feeding the cows. All this time with orange. I saw once in the groceries to organic. So just one more level, one more little level. So they just have to. Someone has to do the mathematics, the economics. Organic people, horrible. Well, that's okay because they were feeding Ibn. I mean like in England and other places, after slaughtering the animals, they would take the slaughtered byproducts, all these things that are not sellable, incestines and whatnot. I don't know exactly what's going to discuss how the babies do all these horrible things. They would take that and feed again to the cow that was causing this bovine spunky form, the mad cow disease. And human things were going mad. What the humans went down. Then they took us a big thing banning all that. So we're really only concerned about the humans. But we should have a Broader vision with the surrouped Amadar Maharaj we were having a big science and religion. So one of the issues that came up in 1996 was the first of January Nayatuta 1997. Then they brought up about ecology. Also that in the Vedas, because we believe that nature is the energy of God, so we should also treat the nature properly, treat the animals properly. Wherein the Christian and the Muslim religions was not so much stressing this point. So then one of the professors he asked on the other religions, when are you going to come more conscious about the environment and being favourable to nature, to the animals and everything and catch up with the Hindus? But they were shocked to know that someone brought it up like that. Because environmental issue is something now universal. Apart from religion scientists, everyone is concerned. But religiously some people are like, if you actually practice Sanatana Dharma, then you'll be more environmentally favorable. Not that we religiously do it all this, but we should at least our beliefs are like that. So they actually hugged our hands. And then some of the at least the Christian leaders they were saying, yes, it's true, it's true. We have to reanalyze our position. And this is something that there are more because for us the prabhupti is part of the divine energy. What's the one I would say that this is my divine energy, the material nature. So because of so many strange things that they do, they get it as a mad cow disease and people start taking it very serious. But just like people take organic milk like that, even they will take organic meat. Why not the Krishna conscious ahimsa protect the cow, start an awareness about that what they do to the cows is so horrible. Rabbi told us that we got this video what they do in the slaughterhouse. But it's almost naturally I say this car I should have promoted so much because I don't know all the reasons why it's very discovering horrible. So this is very interesting reports. Here we take cholonel. It's important. Let's say here it doesn't. It's also good for the cholesterol. No, this side of that, for the cholesterol made meat interesting here also. Who was it that Parsuram fought with? But who he was defeated? Why couldn't defeat another avatar. So how great a warrior with bishma. Any questions? Comments? Yes, Rami Kumar Krishna Das, earlier in the class you were saying that it's better to consume the milk even though the cows get slaughtered. Some people strongly feel that if you consume that milk, you pay the money and that money they use for breeding more cows, to reduce cows and they get slaughtered again. So their point is that if you just don't end in the middle and there'll be less business and less cows slaughter. It's known for those cows responding regardless of the men now they're living longer. Normally they slaughter even when they're young and younger because they're giving up. They let them live longer. My point is that we should have a hindsight. A dog is also important for the human brain for understanding spiritual things. If you get a hymns and out then that would answer this. That would save the cow. One is it's economically viable. The America has the bottom line. People will do it if it works out economically. The people willing to get their premium from Elkhead, the cows just kept it. When they stopped being productive, they just kept it. So maybe even like they have masadas in India where they keep the old cows. So maybe this have like a relic ghost hadan. When this cow produce dairies, they won't kill the cow. They'll give the cow to the ghost Adam and give a flat amount for the like pension of the cow. So then it's easily, you know. And then we have the big ghost events where there's the old cows that are kept because Barrow. But they kill them or not. I'm sure there's some way to do it. Even in India it's very horrible when you see them. See in Kerala and West Bengal they allow their house water. So I was driving one night, Coimbatore to Palgad to Tirupatu, but it was called rural Ayurveda. Along the road at nighttime they take them. All these people taking the cows with all kinds of red marks on them, feeding them. The cows don't want to go. They can smell these people. They can know that it's not for good, that they're taking them. They're breathing. Really horrible. So somehow the founders of our country, they put it in India, at least in my country, now that you may be Americans, let's say they put in the constitution and they should be no counsel under. But I left it as a state issue. It didn't have the moral strength to push it. So that's why two or three states they're still carrying their cows. But on the valley he was fasting. Sometimes I just got this idea when I say organic or nothing. Ever get that idea in your porn? If you had a choice of buying, you know, just ordinary milk, organic milk, organic IMSA milk, which would you buy whatever costs you $2 a dollar more. A lot of people concerned about this.
So why so controversial a milk about the bodies and younger bodies that the milk saying that the milk at a certain age is alright in the human body. When you reach certain age, the milk doesn't do anything good to your body. It's going to you. It's not very quite important for the capsule.
So.
Some people might be experienced. They are going vegan. Myself I said that I'm almost vegan because I don't drink milk except in the Teflons or when I go to Dhaba or Euthana. Otherwise I don't touch the milk. Except sometimes here, of course. But I knew it.
As far as the medical effectiveness of health at different ages of people. This is the first time I urine death. I don't have any research on that. I know I have a disciple who had take much milk. And she had three, four kids. And her bowls are very brittle because of having babies. And you give a lot of calcium to the kids. So the doctor told her to take milks. I don't know. That seems that milk may have some benefits. Probably that we should take high milk or nights There was good for the intelligence. Maybe they're not considering their intelligent factor. You take fish. It's supposed to be good for material intelligence. Being very clever at thinking well, not for spiritual intelligence. If you take cow's dog. It's supposed to be good for the spiritual intelligence to understand subtle develop the brain for understanding spiritual subject matter. So vegans would probably have to understand someone else to settle things about ka consciousness. Ra is an important factor for that problem was that they told me sometimes they said that the filtering sugar through the bones of animals. And he said, you know, like this Kali Yuga. Everything is so contaminated. Can't eat sugar, can't eat this, can't eat that. And so what to eat in the long run. I'm saying that the communities could work out some alternatives. But Prabhupada was up to a certain point he would be follow up Abendanto. It's not a direct ingredient. Neem is not a direct ingredient. Somehow used in the filtering system. It's like too much. He didn't want to get into that much detail about it. I don't know. Someone could search the folio. If anybody ever raised these issues in Karab, what are they saying? But simply fact that the kingdom that's more important. Because anybody can think of this way. We offer our mill to and before ordinary people. It's not an issue, but we take them out. We offer it to Krishna. That cow, even if it's slaughtered, is going to go back to garden or mighty gold. It's not normally a cow slaughtered, it just comes back as a cow until it has finished its cow term. But we're offering its power back to the needy. So then after that the cow is blessed. So how should we stop offering cow milk to the needies when we're giving the blessing? Why should we deprive the cow of the blessing while it's alive? Obviously we don't want to promote. We have a higher purpose. We want to see the cows get spiritually the benefit. Because therefore life say yuz. But ideally in the long run I think we should work for kind of ahimsa, non violent milk or non violent milk. But even until that time, let the deities get the milk and the cowl get the spiritual benefit. Right? Good answer for your wagging prayer. Some of the devotees in our congregation, they feel very strongly about this point and we should not drink milk or chew anything. And they feel very strongly we shouldn't deprive the cow of the spiritual benefit of being offered to Ka. Once Krishna accepts Hindam, it's karma free. So for devotees we are in a special category because we offer our food with Krishna. So the cow is getting the spiritual benefit of having its mouth being offered to Ka. But I imagine this even by the normal logic that that somehow you're going to save cows for not drinking. Hell, they're like, no, I need it less people stop eating the kawhim. What's the point? We're going to stove. But apart from that we're in the world. That's just like a really academic debate. But the real thing is we're offering the food to Ka. They get the spiritual menu if they're later spotted by the cow owner. That's not our responsibility directly, but at least we've given that cow a spiritual benefit and it will be able to progress in its path. Thank you very much, Hare Krishna.
