Recorded lecture/transcript of a Bhagavad-gītā class by Jaya Pataka Swami given in Miami (Jan 28, 2008). The speaker recounts temple visits and deity pastimes across India, examples of devotional experiences and miracles, anecdotes about Jagannath and other deities, and relates a story illustrating the power of chanting the 11th chapter of the Bhagavad-gītā. The tone is devotional, narrative, and didactic.
It says that Samba Bami Jugay Juge. I come in every age. But this now is not every age. It's not every millennium, it's not every century, it's not every decade. It's like maybe day after day, hour after hour people are claiming to be God. He wants to see the Shankaracharya Puri. Because I was told to get permission to go into the Jagannath Puri temple. So then I asked him. He didn't give me too good a favorable reply. He said you can go into the Jagannath Puri temple, no problem. You just wait till you die. Next birth you take birth as a Hindu, you can go in. Then I was asking him that you are worshipping Radha and Krishna. So you are a devotee of Radha and Krishna, your beautiful deities of Radhakrishna Brass. He said no, I am Radha and Krishna. He is Maya body. I said, you are Radhakrishna. But Radhakrishna are very young and beautiful. But you're old, you're an old man. He said, this is my Leela. So everyone's doing that Leela growing old. Even if Prabhu here, his hair is growing gray. That's your Leela. So I said Lord Chaitanya, he said we should avoid the Mayavadis. Mayavaldis think that they're God. Then there's also these professional people. It seems like it's more of a business for them. So Krishna, when he was asked to prove what he was stating then he showed a whole universal form. Arjuna was amazed to see. He was shocked. He was frightened how Ka was showing his form as the wall devouring time factor. The whole universe is being devoured by him. So now after that shocking revelation then he appeared as Narayana with the four hands. Just like Krishna showed Prabhupda states here Devaki and Vasudeva. He showed that he was Narayana, appeared to them with a four handed form. Then he took the two handed. I see here I was in Miami and when I was in the airport, one airline staff he said yeah, we know about you Hare Krishna. As you think that God comes to earth. We know this is not possible. That's why we don't accept you. I said you believe that God is all powerful. He said, yes, of course. And how you can say if he wants to come to earth, he can't come, you can come but he can't and he's less powerful than you are. So sometimes the Lord comes here and shows his beautiful form to the devotees. This way he gives them spiritual happiness. So Lord Chaitanya was enjoying hearing about the pastimes of the Lord this year. Well, this year the 521 beginning of the Lord Chaitanya year, we went with Dakshin and another 214 devotees to visit the Dibyadeshas in South India. Unfortunately someone just gave me the slideshow in raw form and said they're going to send a finished form any day now. Whole year is gone. Didn't get the show yet. But there's over 108 holy places where different pastimes of the different deities happen. Some of these pastimes are quite amazing. There's a pastime, there's one deity called Nityakalyana deity. Everyday marriage deity. Every day they have the marriage of Lakshmi and Narayana like you are doing here. Abishaik, change the cloth Arti some daily puja. Part of their daily puja is marrying the Lord with Lakshmi at a particular time. So he asked how is it that this pastime happened? They said that actually there was a Rishi who had a daughter. Then the Rishi went back to godhead. So then the daughter, she started doing Tapasya to follow her father and go back to godhead. Oh, look at, he's got some Sephardi. So then Nadamuni came and told her that that tapasya doing is for a married woman. You can't do it. You got to get married first, then you go back to godhead. So then she was asking around some of the Rishis if anybody wanted a wife. You don't hear too much about women canvassing. But apparently to go back to godhead, it's allowed. So then finally one Rishi agreed to do it there. They say, oh, there's Dakshin Prabhu. This is the new Tirupati temple. Iskcon Tirupati. So then they did a Garbhodan Samskara and she was pregnant. Then she gave birth to 360 daughters. The father passed out. How is the poor Rishi going to get 360 daughters married? Big responsibility for the father. Because according to Indian culture you have to get all your daughters married. So then as the daughters grew, one very handsome gentleman, he's one of the Ramanuja. Anyway, a very handsome gentleman came and said, listen, I'll marry all your daughters. I'm wealthy, I have no problem maintaining. I'll marry all of them. This looks like Bharuda Raja then. So every day they had a wedding with one daughter. At the end the last day, all the daughters merged into the one. She turned into Lakshmi and the handsome man turned into Narayana. So that was all a pastime of the deity. And they had the final wedding since for one year he'd been having wedding. So they maintain that Leela, that every day they marry the Lord. Is anybody having difficulty getting married, go to that temple. So he warned all the Brahmacharis, you better stay focused. Dangerous temple for the Brahmacharis. Single people, okay? People want to get married. So that's if anybody needs to get married. That's a temple to go to. They say there's one temple we went to that's called the Vardaraj temple variety. King of giving blessings. Vara means blessing. Varada means giving blessing. Varadaraj King of giving blessings. So he fulfills all the desires of his devotees. He's got a very big smile. There was Ramanuja. Secretary was blinded by some fanatic Shivites. He gave back the eyesight to that devotee. Even though his eyes were poked out. Not just like they replaced. I don't know. They do eye replacement today. So then I went to Dages. I had taken normally a low salt diet. There's one temple where the Lord doesn't need any salt. Zero salt. So you get cursed if you bring salt into that temple. They said there was a pastime where Lakshmi took birth as Rishi's daughter. And then Narayana came as an old man and said, I want to marry her. And the father thought, he's an old guy. What? Do you want to marry my daughter to an old guy? He said, no, no, she's too young, you know, she's not very trained up yet. What do you mean? He said, well, sometimes she forgets to put salt. She's not a good cook. Sounds familiar. Sounds familiar. Then the woman said, listen, I'll marry her. Even I don't eat salt for the rest of my life. So like this, he wasn't taking no for an answer. So finally the Rishi married. Then he turned into Narayana just like hereup. Turning into Narayana, he turned into Aayana. And the daughter turned to Lakshmi. So that temple is still there. It's in Humbakonam. And all the they make pretzels they call murukus with no salt. Special spice rice. But so much spice they put you don't miss the salt. So it's pretty hot. What state is that? That's in Tamil Nadu. We went to all the four states. We went in our Shinga temples. We went to the Padmanabha temple. The king of Travancore. Ex king. Now There are no more kings in India, but he's still a Maharashtra. So he was having a sore foot and then the doctor said, I can't cure it. Maybe you better see the deity has a crack in his foot. Because you're so much connected with the deity. Maybe something's wrong with the deity. He saw the didi. There was a crack in the foot. Didi is covered by some black stone like item. So they tried to repair the foot and it fell off. Not the foot, but this black and revealed it underneath. It was all solid gold armor on top of the actual deity. So they removed this black stonelight. It was actually some kind of. During the Mughal invasion, they had covered the gold deity with some kind of elephant blessing. This is in Maduray, Chiranya Valley. So they found that the whole deity is covered with gold, tons of gold. The Deiri is 16ft long. And then they found the columns all covered with gold. So the devotees went in and had a darshan of Padvanava, says one of the eight most important deities of India. So there's Narayana in Badrinath Papanas. Get rid of all your sins there. Where's that at? Chirupati. Well, this is Karnataka's special place, the Kavetti River. So where was I about the deities? You talking about all the deities? The 1840 deities. What was the last deity I was talking about? Narayana Padmanava. So Parmanava is always lying down. He's Padmanava lying on Ananta Sesha with a Brahma coming from his navel. So they said his Leela is to be always sleeping. Jagannath Leela is always eating 56 offerings a day. Never lets a hand get wet. We're always offering him some new pestilence, new prashad, new boga. And in Mayapur, the Lord is eternally youthful, eternally devotee. In Gokula, the Lord's always youthful. His youthful pastimes, Badri not. He's meditating. So like that. In different parts, there's eight prominent deities. Each is that manifesting some different aspect. This is in Udupi, Rathyanshara and Udupi. I was telling you I went to the temple in Sofia, Bulgaria for the first time in my life. Anybody been to Bulgaria? I beat you. And I was telling them about Lord Jagannath. In Mayapur recently, there was a pastime about Jagannath that one Muslim came into the temple. There's nothing unusual because many times Muslims come and they're quite devoted. They got some blessing from Lord Jagannath and were able to have baby or something that they weren't otherwise able to. So they were like devoted. But this particular Muslim came. Pujari thought he's just like some of these devoting Muslims that come offered him a prasad. He took the prasad and threw it. I don't believe in all these things. I don't want your food. Bujaya said, what's wrong with you? If you don't like it, if you don't believe in it, why do you come here? It don't bother you. Why are you coming here? Bothering offending the Lord. Train station Kirtan. One lady there shaved up feminine. Agora's second wife. When his wife first wife died. Shaved up? Yeah. What's her name? Malini. Mayapur Malini. One girl, Cooley also shaved her hair. This is some train station south India. But they shaved up in Tirupati. So anyway then. So then next day the same guy came back. This time he paid his obeisances flat out before juggernaut. So they asked, you know, he came and begged prasad from the. As he did these harinams, many places girls are dancing and synchronized. 42 different nations devotees. Then the Puja said, Elijah said, I gave you prasad. You threw it. Now today you want prasad. What's the reason why? So he said, well, last night they came in my dream. And the one with the white face, he grabbed me by the neck and started punching me. He said, you threw my brother's prasad. I'm going to finish you off. And the one with the yellow face said, finish him, finish him. I was saved by the one with the black face. He came down and it wasn't that big a deal. Give him a second chance. If he doesn't repent, then we'll finish him. But give him a chance now. So I repent. I believe. I believe. So please give me prasadam. I'll never throw it again. So I was asking the devotees in Bulgaria if they're having any pastimes with their deities. And I want to know here from the devotees here if you have any pastime with your deities. I'm sure sometimes it happens when the devotees don't tell. It was in Bulgaria. Then they told me that yeah, we have a pastime here. But first the Puja never told us. Then later she revealed a lady. Pujari said, they made Didi's shoes and they made, you know, one right shoe, one left shoe for Jagannath and Baladev. But somehow by accident they made two left shoes for Subhadra. So after Three days Subhadra appeared in a dream of the Hujari and was walking with a limb. One shoe on and one has two left shoes. How can I keep up with my brothers? To give me two left shoes, I need both left and right. What's going on with you people? And then the lady woke up shocked. But she didn't tell anybody. Then after another few days this time all the three appeared. And Balaram and Jagannath were really angry with her saying what are you doing? You give our sister. Here's Taguru Kul doing drum performance synchronized. So then they said, you didn't give our sister. You gave her two left shoes. How can she walk? How can she keep up with us? You better arrange some solution for this. So she was shocked. They were getting really heavy angry with her. So then they got the left shoe and a right shoe for Subhadra. After that everything was okay. Shiva Meenakshi temple. We have our fire dancers. That's for you. We have our own. You do? We got two synchronized. So like this which are the pastimes here? You should tell Dakshin Prabhu you can keep a diary like in Mayapur. Someone brought a box of mangoes for Lord Narasimhadev. Then thought ah, these are just ordinary mangoes. Narusingadev probably doesn't like them. Anyway she just kept them in her house. And that night Narasimhadeva appeared in a dream and said where are my mangoes? I like mangoes. My favorite fruit. Why are you not giving me those mangoes? So next day she came running with the mangoes and gave to the Pujari. Told what happened. There's a few mango pastime with Narasingadev. Someone made mango achar. You made this. Or this was made by those devotees. You made it? No, it's all part of the safari. I'm giving my Kirtan. I mean talking, singing, lecture. Yeah. With the dancing Gopis behind the main theme is use your senses in Krishna's service. So it's a very sensual presentation. This Agni Dev. So like that we have different experiences that every deity is an incarnation. Just like Krishna, he showed his universal form. Showed his form. Well, our deities, they're also considered incarnations. They're called Archa avataras. And as an Archa avatar, it says that each one has individual pastimes. That's called Ila Vai Chitra. Did you hear the glories of the 11th chapter Bhagavad Gita from Padmapuran Long tangle. You forgot already? Who Wants to hear it again? Yes. Nobody. Nobody wants to hear it. Let's see the hands. How many people want to hear it? Okay. There was. There was Brahmin, who every day would read the 11th chapter, Bhagavad Gita. This was his special pastime. He was traveling to different holy places. One day he got into this village and he wanted to find some place he could stay overnight. So he asked us if there is any place to stay. And then people directed him to the guest house. So he went to the guest house, asked if you'd stayed. The guest house manager said, you want to stay here? Okay, no problem. You're welcome. But one thing is that at night we close the door. We don't open it till the morning. So the whole guest house was filled with people. Then they gave him his own private room, showed him where the toilets and the bathrooms and everything were. So then he chanted his 11th chapter of Bhagavad Gita, lay down, take a rest. Got up early in the morning, took a shower, wanted to leave, but found the whole guest house was empty. But the front door was still locked. So he's wondering what happened. How did everybody else get out? And I'm still locked in. He's waiting there. Then the guy opened the door and he opened. Saw him. Ha. You're here. You're alive. Yeah, I think so. Rahman left, was walking down the street, and one other Brahmin came running up to him and fell at his feet and said, you have to save me to save my son. To save my son. Will you promise me you'll help to save my son? What do I have to do with your son? No, you're the only one who can save him. Please come to me. Come with me. Then he said, well, what is. Tell me what's going on here? This is a very strange village. Everybody says, you're still alive and starts laughing. It's weird what's going on here? So they said, you see in this mountain here next to the village, there's a demon who lives there. He's a Rakshasa. He's a cannibal. He's a man eater. So he used to come and raid our village and steal one member or another and eat them. So we're always living in fear. So he made a deal. Our village leaders went to see him and asked him if there's some arrangement we can make. He said, okay, build me a guest house and I'll just eat the guests. That's where all the guests went? Yeah. He came in the night he has his own key and he had everybody out. Why didn't he eat meat? That's why you can save my son. You're the only one who can do it. You see, my son went to invited a friend to come over. But by mistake he went to the guest house and got locked inside. And he got eaten. My son went to get him. He got locked inside and the demon came down and ate him. So I went up to claim my son back. Because he's one of our villagers. He promised not to eat our villagers. He said, why was he in the guest house? I don't know who's the villager. However, in the guest house I can eat. So then Rakshasa told us that there's one guy in the guest house who chants 11 chapter Bhagavad Gita. He couldn't eat him. Anybody who chants the 11th chapter Bhagavad Gita couldn't be eaten by Rakshasas. Good thing to know if you happen to be traveling through headhunter country. So then he said, if you have him chant the 11th chapter Bhagavad Gita and pour it over my head over a glass of water and have him pour the water on my head, then I'll be freed from the curse of being a Rakshasa. There's a whole other long story how he got to be a Rakshas. But that's. I'm not going to go into that. Then say, please. You have to come up and say, my son, please promise you'll do it. He said, okay, okay, I'll go. So he climbed the mountain, went to Brahman, saw the Rakshasa there, chanted over a bowl of Water, the 11th chapter Bhagavad Gita poured it on the head of the Rakshasa. Then he was freed from the curse and he became a liberated soul. And the Son of the Brahmin also got liberated. So both the Son and the Rakshas were there. Then the Vishtaduttas came down, took them in the spiritual airplane. But the father told the son, come back home. Don't go now. Say, father, I'm going back to Godhead. I'm going back to Godhead. No. But in your house your cat is waiting for you, your dog, your mother, your sister. But dad, if I go back, maybe I don't get the Godhead at the end of life. Now I'm getting a ticket. I got a free ticket back. No, no, you can do that later. Now we miss you. Come home. So look at this person here. Chants 11 chapter Bhagavad Gita. Because of his chanting, we're all going back to Godhead. You learn how to chant it from him. Come back to God. I'll be waiting for you. Ciao. Latin Brown. So they went back to go out here. So that's a little Bhagavad Gita class. Want to see my last year's tour? Thank you for watching our videos. Be sure to subscribe to our channel. We publish new videos every day.
