20091231 || Bhagavad-gītā Class (14.1-8) || New Dvārakā, USA #JayapatakaSwamiArchives

A recorded New Year's Eve Bhagavad-gītā class by Jaya Pataka Swami (New Dvārakā, USA) focused on the three modes of material nature (goodness/sattva, passion/rajas, ignorance/tamas), their symptoms and remedies, and practical devotional guidance (chanting, prasāda, conduct). The chunk includes lecture excerpts, illustrative stories (Lord Chaitanya, devotees), and a listener Q&A about humility, lust, and staying in the mode of goodness, with logistics for local temple events and recorded archives.
So today is the New Year's Eve in Los Angeles. I give the morning class because in the evening most of the devotees went out on the ar, you know, so whatever dualities are here. We're having a class here and is being broadcast on Internet by Ishvar Fu Maharaj. So problem with the connection. But there's some problem with the connection. Yeah. You see, the drives is our New Year. The day after Lord is the last day of the year. So we observe the operator with all kinds of spiritual are spiritual observances. Whereas here in the west the New Year's in some places is observed with fireworks. And usually people get in the mode of ignorance. And actually they tell us that whatever you do on New Year's Day, that'll be probably what you do for the whole year. So they try to be very good on the New Year's Day, very spiritual.
And.
Unfortunately that idea hasn't come here to the west yet. But I can't see.
Yeah, I cannot see. Tell him which altering was three months of mercurial nature.
Which which is the one we want.
The second. By becoming fixed in this knowledge, one can attain to the plans in true nature like my own. Thus established, one is not born at the time of creation.
Sam.
The delusion of all embodied living entities, Indolence and sleep. What does mode of goodness? Condition conditions 1 to happiness, passion conditions 1 to fruitive action and ignorance. That's 5, 6 and 7. Text 5 Satvam Rajasthan Prakriti Sambhava nibadnanti Mahabho dehi de hinam agyam Translation Interpret Bahidantashra Material nature consists of three modes goodness, passion and ignorance. When the eternal living entity comes in contact with nature, O mighty Amarajuna, he becomes conditioned by these modes. Text 6 Tatra Satvam Nirmaladvas Prakashakam anamayam sukha sangena badnati jnana sangina chanag Translation O seamless world. The moon of goodness, being purer than the others, is illuminated and it frees one from all sinful reactions. Those situated in that mode become conditioned by a sense of happiness and knowledge. Rajav ragatmakam vidhi vishna sangha samudbhavam tan ni vadnati kongteya karma sanghe na dehi.
N.
The mode of passion is born of unlimited desires and longings. O son of Kunti. And because of this the embodied living entity is bound to material fruitive actions. Tamastva agnana jam vidhi mohanam sarvadehinam brahmadana lasyani Javis Tanya Badnati Bharata Translation Osanam Bharata Know that the mode of darkness born of ignorance is the delusion of all embodied living entities. The results of this mode are madness, indolence and sleep which bind the conditioned soul.
Property.
In this verse, the specific application of the word too is very significant. This means that the moan of ignorance is a very peculiar qualification of the embodied soul. The mode of ignorance is just the opposite of the mode of goodness. In the mode of goodness, by development of knowledge one can understand what is what. But the mode of ignorance is just the opposite. Everyone under the spell of the mode of ignorance becomes mad and the madman cannot understand what is what. Instead of making advancement, one becomes degraded. The definition of the mode of ignorance is stated in the Vedic literature. Vastu yathaatmya Jnana Varakam vipadyaya Jnana Janakam tamah. Under the spell of ignorance one cannot understand a thing as it is. For example, everyone can see that his grandfather has died and therefore he will also die. Man is mortal. The children that he conceives will also die. So death is sure. Still, people are madly accumulating money and working very hard all day and night, not caring for the eternal spirit. This is madness. In their madness, they are very reluctant to make advancement in spiritual understanding. Such people are very lazy. When they are invited to associate for spiritual understanding, they are not much interested. They are not even active, like the man who is controlled by the mode of passion. Thus, another symptom of one embedded in the mode of ignorance is that he sleeps more than is required. Six hours of sleep is sufficient. But a man in the mode of ignorance sleeps at least 10 or 12 hours a day. Such a man appears to be always dejected and is addicted to intoxicants and sleeping. These are the symptoms of a person conditioned by the mode of ignorance.
Yeah, we're just talking to another Krishna's husband. He's coming in. He stopped me in the.
So.
How.
Many are watching Internet right now we have 13. So what is the mode of nature that they here in America they are very coming on the new year we have one total darkness. Who thinks this is more permanent? The we don't know what the general mass do. Maybe they don't watch. They watch tv. But like in the public displays, like in Times Square. I don't hear what they do in Los Angeles. Usually they wait for some ball to fall Atlanta like that. And they consume a lot of alcoholic beverages and pretty much they're not conscious of the Words or not very slightly conscious. So this is what is described here as the motor ignorance. Whereas in the actual. A day of the New Year's Day is a day that should be spent in charity and yogyas, in rejoicing in more goodness or pure goodness. That should be a family event. But instead, most people, they stay up till midnight and they get drunk. And that's how they spend their New Year's Day. So we'd like to promote that. Of course, for us, it's not particularly New Year's. We go out and we chant Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna, Hare Hare, Hare, Hare Ramara. To add some spiritual touch to the New Year's celebrations. People don't know that they can be healthy without intoxication. They think that intoxication is synonymous with being healthy. But actually you're really healthy when you're chanting Hare Ka. Hare Krishna. Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna, Hare Hare. Of course, at the New Year celebration, we do get a lot of people who chant with us, like always brought up. They used to do the Rathyatra and Bhagavan V and in Australia. And the people used to chant and dance with us. And they would chant Hare Ka and pull the chariot. And in this way they would Subhana. They would be observing the New Year's Day, doing some devotional service. One time, Lord Chaitanya was walking with some associates. And he walked by a group of drunkards. And one of the drunkards, he said, there goes Lord, there goes Chaitanya Gorunga. Oh, he danced very beautifully. So you know how drunkards talk. He was talking like that. He called behind Lord Titania. Heartache is so heartache. Dancing and chanting. So the other associates, they didn't know that what should they do? That he's being offensive. Should they. Should they take some action or should they clench the eye? What should they do? Allah Shaitan. He was just quite cool. He said, no, no, don't do anything. After sometimes the man, he went and sat back down on his fence. So then he said, Lord Chaitanya, that person was taking fun. He was joking and falling behind you. Wasn't that offensive? He said, you see, he was obviously under the influence of Elkhom. So alcohol will last one night. Next day he'll be sick. But the chanting of Hare Ka he did that will lead to his benefit eternally. Hare Krishna. Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna. So like this, they'll get some benefit. We are the zero newcomers to our class here. Here who are in LA or who are from Calgary. Calgary, Canada. Oh, thank you. Welcome and what, you're coming tomorrow to the New Year's Day feast.
Tomorrow?
Are you coming tomorrow for the New Year feast?
Tomorrow? No, we are going to Spanish for.
Spanish for temple tomorrow.
Or we can postpone some tomorrow. Yeah, yeah, Today I go in later, soon.
Well, we will be here until 8th of January.
Yes.
Come tomorrow and there'll be a special feast.
Okay. Now we didn't know about the program.
Yeah. So in January, what time is the program tomorrow? 12 to 2. 12. 12:30 there'll be Sampuja and 12:30 till 1:30 I'll give a class. And then after that there'll be a very big feast. And there's kind of a competition between the two. Two of the best cooks. But you only see Catholic competition. There was a Christmas Day feast, one cook and New Year's Day feast with another cook. So you need people that took lots of feast to be the judge. You want to know who cooks the best feast. But anyway, you can enjoy.
You can.
Enjoy these small other things. So I just say how. If you have any question, please write your question on the video. I'll continue the test. You can give the question Hindi or English or Spanish or Russian or Russian. Then you have to translate.
Should I read down a question or.
Can I ask right now or. Thank you. Are you going to ask later? So just saying how for the New Year's Day it would be like in India, we have the rapture on New Year's Day of the Makra Sankar. And that day we observed the theatre. But somehow for New Year's in India they observed whatever the New Year's varies from one state to the next. They usually observed some family, I get together some charity, visited temple. Somehow they try to do some spiritual stuff on the New Year's Day. But here on New Year's Eve, mostly they drown. They just sat all night and they sleep the next day. So they don't really have auspicious son New Year's Day. Unfortunately, their New Year's is kind of a tomostic thing. So goodness destroys the siddhal reactions and the mother ignorance increases sin. So we would like to avoid the model of ignorance and to the healthy mode of goodness. And ultimately, if they can observe the mode of pure goodness, chanting Hare ka, engaging in devotional service, that would be the ideal thing. So let us. I would like to request God to chant a little bhajan for two minutes, Ktan bhajan. And then after that we'll have question answer. So this gives you time to fill out your questions. Shimati bhakti sam. Shivas.
Shivas.
Thank you. Thank you for your beautiful kitchen.
We've got three questions here. And the fourth one coming. Most respected Guru Maharaj, I fall at the lotus feet of Sri Sri Rukmini Du Ardesh and pray that they bring you the best of health and Krishna consciousness to your divine grace in this New year. Hare Krishna, it's not really a question. This was by Persha Thumper.
So we thank you, Professor Shantan Das who has come here on Idaho, right? Pardon? On a mission to see the temples of Southern California. So he saw the Los Angeles and also the little beach and the San Diego, San Jose and Sacramento. So I thank you for your good wishes and your prayers. I do hope that the authority we're taking right here because we're taking authority in Tustin Celta here under the San Diego. So I just want to thank you for your good wishes and for the New year. And we wish also that you and your family avid Krishna conscious and happy. Thank you.
Okay, our second question here. Dear Guru Maharaj, how does one develop humility? This is from Devi Dasa.
Well.
Ashda Guru tell us that whatever we do, alright, we should think that it's by the mercy of the Guru, by the mercy of Krishna. In that way we are always humble because we don't take the credit ourselves. If they take the credit, oh, I'm very intelligent, I'm very expert, I'm very lucky or something, then obviously we could get proud and that would cause us something to help me in this case, Rudolini. One time she was dying, Krishna. And then she thought, she said to Krishna, you see, other wives, they're having husbands bodies and made out of flesh and bone and skin and fat, yogurts and legs and blood. And I am so fortunate that my husband is patient himself. So he is a transcendental form. So she was a little proud. So then she said, well, maybe we were together too long, something like that. And she like, just the thought of being separated from Krishna was too much for her. She fainted and fell to the ground. I was like being struck by a thunderbolt. I was just kidding. Don't worry.
So.
Third note here, Maharaj, is a request. I would like to record your class tomorrow for your disciples, Sachin Gaurangadas and Dipeshwari Radhika Devi Dasi.
They're from Bangladesh, Maharaj, and they're in Calgary.
And I would like to refer you a class to my.
Is it okay?
Well, yeah. Think about this. Is it okay? Yeah. Sure. You look n. I think that that would be your benevolent mercy. Okay. They can see the class live. And I don't know how many hours of difference calories.
One hour.
One hour. So not in 12 o'. Clock. So it should be one hour later now. So that will be LA Live Us. Okay. So they also take. Here's one of our glasses.
Yes.
It'll be available at MP3 and I could give you the link if you have an email.
Okay.
In case you miss it, all the.
Bhagat classes are recorded and taped. We have an archive.
Yes. Not Gita.
Not Gita though.
Unless it's special.
Unless you're giving it.
Hare Krishna, please accept my humble obeisances. Hare Krishna, please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada. There are three gates to lower planets. Lust, greed and anger. Could you please describe what is lust and what is the best way to remove it? This is from Angelica.
Question. Thank you, Angelica. Let's have a hearty roll. So lust, anger and greed. Lust is our material desires which we dovetail with Krishna. If we can dovetail it with Krishna, then it gets purified. Just like say someone wants to dress nice, but they use that part. Let me dress urban knees. Rock her knees. Very nice. So then that lusty desire is purified. But if they spend a lot of money on themselves by all desire clothes, then that can be a subject material desire. If they don't, if they have some a Krishna conscious reason. Okay, a dress very nice and well neat and one revo and. And I'm going to preach. You see, somehow you're trying to purify it. If you can't, you just do it out of our desire to enjoy. Then it's called lust. So the devotees, they try to do everything as a Christian of service. Thus have the sirens become purified. Kathleen is Krishna conscious and they have been married by Krishna consciousness. And they're trying to serve Ka together. So they may also have some materialist faiths. This is for their education. And at the end of the day though first they should want to be fully Krishna conscious. But they get a license to.
Experience.
Oneness of mature happiness and sadness. So how to do that? That's also given in the Satsra advice by our owner. So anything which is just purely for the satisfaction of the senses, which has no connection with Krishna, that's a must. It's like in America and Canada. There are many fast food restaurants, but they're not vegetarian. And she asked why you eat the meat so they say, well, we eat food. We eat food like this. Cardinal Daniel told Bhava. But raw zola is enough vegetables and grains and milk that we don't need to eat the meat. So if there was really starvation, if the only thing was eat was may there be some essential. There's a story about one Sadhu. He was not only a legendarian, but he was caught in a drought. And just before a dog died, Sayyid the dog, he got out of the desert. Afterwards he resumed his vegetarian diet. So that was his synlop. Anyway, the dog had died. So in most cases nowadays we have the food shipped over. Like it may be very cold in Canada and northern usa, but still they can get all vegetables and salads and grains and milk. I shifted from wherever so there's no need that they should eat meat. But they're eating because they disrupted it to gratify their tongue. So that like that is their lust that they're doing the sense gratification just to gratify the senses. There's no need for it. There's no urgent need. So these are the gifts to hell. If you want to give you an example. But this is the General. So they like to eat shava. They like to eat hope. But they all render food to ka and they take the remnants. So that remnants is called Jagyashish. In lava Gidda. It's called the remnants of the sacrifice. So as a sacrifice, they're taking the Prashant. So by doing so they actually destroyed. It says the sins are destroyed by taking the remnants of sacrifice. But it is for shadow. In fact one time authority. She was defied from Hashan and Rashida and Narad. Everyone not receiving it. So she said, I don't want anyone to suffer what I am suffering today. Not getting the prashant. Let everyone get eating the dogs. So it was the Lord, he told her that okay, I'll come as a dara Roma and all life Mashad will go to you first. And then so the system in general pray, everyone sits down and takes the nah Mashad, which is ahur to jar. And then it's all to a rim lady, which is a form of Harvard. So yeah, they don't. They the doesn't matter. You're Rama or whatever, Shuja, all in the same line and take the shot for Prashant, everyone is equal. So like that we take Prashant. This is not considered lust. If they reject all I know I did Rashad and reject sound, excess sound because of taste. That's again offensive. He has a doctor of medical restriction. Like someone has diabetes or something. So they don't take the serve. That's another thing about. They shouldn't just will to leave it. No, I didn't like this preparation. I want to take that. That's not very good. So do you know the question? Sir, sir, last question.
Dearest Guru Maharaj, please accept my humble obeisances. Could you please let us know how we can always stay in the mode of goodness or pure goodness. Your servant, Analyt Jagannath.
Health is not good. So we have to leave middle of the lecture, Maharaj. So pardon us.
It's the last question. Okay, that's another question. Okay.
Please, please come forward.
There's a question on the Internet this morning. No, this morning they asked a question during class, but it's not time to answer you. Thank you very much.
Thank you very much, madam. Health is not good. So we have to leave middle of the.
That's okay.
My name is Devoti. We are disciple of.
Oh.
We came from Calgary. We are very fortunate to have the son of you Maharaj. We are lucky one.
Yeah.
One of the Prabhuji bring us here. He says, you know, de Maharaj is here, you know. So I asked that you know he's personally here. So he says, yeah. So he came after him. We are very lucky.
I enjoy.
Yeah, I'm feeling kind of enough.
Yeah.
Seeing kind of enough.
Yeah. Thank you.
Thank you very much. We live because when.
Thank you.
Thank you for coming. So.
How to stay in the mode of pure goodness? Do everything for Krishna. Many are considered as a pure goodness. Otherwise if you do things because it's right in the Shastra with the desire to still follow the rules and regulations of the Shastra but then centered in more goodness. These martyrs, they try to do everything as they are according to the rules of the Shasta. So one time Rajshitanya, he came to Sarvaghur Vodacharya. Sarvaghur Vodacharya was. He was a previously Aspanta. He was observing all the rules according to the Myavadi principle. But he was according to Shastra. So Lord Caitanya came to his room when he was late from Ramlarthi. He didn't come. So Lord Chaitanya of suddenly appeared in his room associates and said, oh, are you sick? You weren't malarkey. And he said, no, I was up late because he had some. Had some reason. So what you hear is the general Prashad. We got more likely some catches. So Shah's boma took it and he ate. He said, this sea you deal very much. Restrict following rules and regulations. You have taken this prashad without brushing your teeth. How you can do that? How then he recorded a verse. We do not need to observe any other rules and regulations. He should take the prashad immediately upon giving up. So I followed narrow. Lord Shaitanya said, I was just testing you. You'll test the test. You are a real bhakta. You're a real devotee of the Lord. So the normal rule is we shouldn't eat before we brush our teeth. Work within ourselves, but gives us prashada. Then we make any session. Prashada is ka. So we take that under any circumstance. Even if we're not clean.
This question was related to this morning's question about an class. They're asking what should be our attitude regarding our children when they take initiation from gurus from outside. ISKCON.
Children.
Is asking that question. I mean, it's related to the question they made this morning. This is more directly as your family.
Member, of course there's nothing you can do. Like I said this morning that all the Islam has a good relationship with all of the Gaudiyomats. Excellent. Which I don't mention the name but I think everyone knows who we're talking about. There's only one. He's also then from the Gaurivat. Because he reiterates everyone Gaudiyamat is son. He said so. But before the children are still young. I think at this point I didn't really focus enough on Srila Prabhupada. That Prabhupada, he is the one who took the mission, took the message to the west that Gravad is the actual in large soul. So we went to in the verse today. It said that one who takes the teachings or blessings from even the servant of the servant of Krishna. So Pharaoh is the servant of Fish up and thinking from his servants, thinking from his life. As something which should really be enlightening the children. Why Prabhak is special, why you should take her hand. Of course, if the children they have their free will. If they want to take her tongue out, that's up to them. In which case you are guiding them accordingly. But we would try to encourage the parents that before they go to that extreme step. If you had already trained them up to actually connect him to Prabhupada. You see, somehow the sovereignty of people they criticize directly, indirectly Prabhupada. Although they are holy Hershel themselves. But later they say things against iskcon, against Radha in different ways. So if you fail to invite the spirit of Pravra consciousness in their children while they were young, what can you do? I mean at least their whole body salvation. And of course if they become offensive to Prabhu or offensive to Islam, then yourself say that they're not offensive. They're just somehow they took initiate you out. Then you might be helpless.
