20241007 - Proper Behavior

Jaya Pataka Swami reads and explains the chapter on proper behavior from Sri Chaitanya Shikshamita, covering virtues like simplicity, non-stealing, kindness to animals, and detachment. He offers practical examples and brief comparisons to Islamic teachings, then closes with devotional prayers.
Ra.
Harness.
Hare Krishna. Dear devotees, today we will continue with the reading of Sri Chaitanya Shikshamita of Shila Sachitananda Bhakti Vinod Thakur chapter entitled Proper behavior. So we are hearing the different items of proper behavior. So now we are on the fourth item. Arjava Simplicity. Simplicity is called Arjava. As much simpler the human life is that much pious they will be.
The verse says that somebody human being is our pious he'll be so this.
Verse says the simpler the human being is, the more pious he will be. So.
Try to simplify our life.
So we should try to simplify our lives.
Men, women, they should simplify their life.
Men, women, they should simplify their lives.
We see that in the modern world even some of the common things are very complicated.
We see in the modern world even the common things are complicated. Next fifth, not stealing, not taking other people's good unjustly is called Asteya not stealing. He has no right to take any property as long as it is not earned by hard work. Righteous donation. It's very interesting. It's a very interesting thing. Lord Chaitanya he showed by his practical life.
He didn't take anyone's objects.
He didn't take anyone's object.
Righteous person giving a donation.
So property, a property One God by hard labor or a righteous person giving some donation.
So.
That'S the principle which is being followed today by most of the world. The sixth one, Aparik Graha Non acceptance. Disabled persons such as blind, crippled, etc. Are entitled to alms. Those who have the ability they have to collect goods through fair work. Through fair work. If such people back then it is parikraha. Accepting not doing so is called aparikraha Non acceptance.
So certain people are allowed to take.
So certain people are allowed to back based on their disability. Those who have the capability or ability.
Of working should not beg.
Should not beg. Kindness. One should be kind to all living beings. Kindness that is appropriate and reasonable is legitimate Kindness. The virtue of kindness out of Ragavritti spontaneous affection will be discussed elsewhere. The discussion to show mercy only to humans and treat animals mercilessly is unjust. If a person suffers, one should try in a way that the person does not suffer.
So kindness should be offered to man and also animals.
So kindness should be offered to man and animal.
I remember out of the window we have a.
So in Srila Prabhupada's room. Over in the window they had a velvet curtain.
Mosquitoes was taking shelter.
And many mosquitoes were taking shelter of this velvet curtain. So Prabhupada said, there's so many mosquitoes here, then we can kill them. We went to kill them.
Putting a curtain up that attracts mosquitoes. I don't want to kill them.
So Polkadot said, you should not do this. First you put curtains to attract mosquitoes and then you kill them.
So he was suggesting curtains that don't attract mosquitoes.
So he was suggesting curtains that don't attract mosquitoes.
This is the kindness.
So this is a kind of kindness.
And kindness for not only human beings, but also animals.
Kindness so kindness not only for human beings, also for animals, even mosquitoes. 8. Detachment Vairagya attachment to sense object. Attachment to sense objects is removed by controlling the mind, controlling the senses, tolerance and abstinence. Controlling the internal senses is called shama. Controlling the external senses is called dhamma. The practice of tolerating the difficulty of sinful desire is called the tiksha. Relinquishment of thirst for general sense object is called uparati. Vairagya is a pious action. If there is vairakya, sin almost does not appear. According to the vaidi regulatory principle. Vairakya dharma should be practiced gradually on the path of raga. Spontaneous attraction. Vairagya is easily attained. It will be discussed elsewhere. Practicing detachment is a pious action. Vairagya is practiced while observing physical vows such as chaturmasya, darsha, pourna, masi, etc. In the beginning, after gradually abandoning the desire for pleasure about food and sleep. At last, when the habit of giving up all pleasures and accepting the sense object only for the existence of life is fulfilled, then vairagya becomes habituated. If vairagya is accustomed, the qualification for the fourth ashrama in the form of sannyas is born. Ah, it.
Sense objects.
So vahrajya or detachment. It says here that in this way there's hardly any sin.
So people should be trained. Trained in different kinds. Different kinds of vairagya.
So people should be trained in different kinds of vairagya.
Just like an ecology, we don't take grains, beans, pulses.
Just like on Ekadashi, we don't take grains, beans, pulses.
I'm doing the Chandra mas. On the first month you don't take saak or spinach.
So just like during chaturmaash, on the first month you don't take saag or spinach.
The second month you don't take yogurt.
The second month you don't take yogurt.
This month.
Third month you don't take milk this month. Third month you don't take milk.
One month we don't take.
So on the fourth month people are supposed to be vegetarian. We avoid Urad dal as a token.
All these things.
All these things train you for vairakya or detachment. Saint Respecting the Shastra. Wow. It's everyone's duty to respect scriptures. If it's written down judging the truth and falsehood, then it can be called Scripture. Those who have gained good qualification and formulated scriptures, they have revealed the true Shastra. Those who have not qualified but have formulated the Shastra by being inclined to judge the system of rules and prohibitions and the ultimate goal, they have manifested false Shastra by giving false advice. The scriptures which illogical and atheistic views are seen. These shastras are born of false arguments those should not be respected. When a blind man guides another blind man, both fall into a well. Similarly, the false shastra makers and their blind followers are all in the wrong path and lamentable. True Shastra means vedas and shastras that supplement the Vedas are to be understood. Discussing those scriptures and teaching them to others is a pious action.
Offenses to the holy name.
The fourth one in the 10 offenses to the Holy Name, how to.
Follow.
Or respect the Shastra, not to follow.
Or disrespect the Shastra.
Are not very bona fide.
Some of the shastras are very bona.
Fide, which are not Vedas or Vedas.
That.
May have some contradictions which are.
Not following the Vedas or adhering the Vedas. They might have some contradiction.
So.
Lord, Lord Chaitanya, he was an expert in all the shastra.
Lord Chaitanya, he was an expert in all the shastras.
Islamic beers. So he preached from the Quran.
So he preached to the Islamic what? Beers? Beers. Sorry. Peers from the Quran. Yeah, Peers from the Quran.
So he said.
He said. The Quran said this, this, this, this, this.
I was curious. VHD is on IR.
So I was curious. I asked an Islamic PhD or something, a very learned man, where are the.
Verses I say this, so where are.
The ayats or surat that says these things?
And we published a book, apparently in the Quran, one verse that says.
God.
Is a light, Allah is a light.
So we published a book. Apparently in the Quran, there's only one verse that says Allah is a light.
Something like that.
Something like that.
But other places it says is kind, is merciful, is just. You don't think, you know, light Lord is very kind.
Okay. In other verses it says he's very kind. He's very merciful. He's just the light bulb is not just not kind. Merciful.
We published a book so we published a book where we took all the Lord Chaitanya's verses and so the verses from the Quran.
So we took Lord Chaitanya's verses and supported those by the verses from Quran.
And this Islamic scholar, he said that originally in the color is called that box that they all worship. So they said that originally not have Sah Davies like Lacery or something.
So this Islamic scholar said originally in the Kaaba that the box they have at Mecca they have some deities of Devi Lakshmi, etc.
Muhammad Peace beyond him. He apologized one day. He was late with prayers.
So he also said Muhammad may peace upon him. He also apologized one day because he was late for the worship.
And Allah put his hand on his shoulder.
He said he was offering his prayers and Allah put his hand on his.
Shoulder until he realized he was late for the prayers.
So then he realized that he was late for the prayers.
So there's Muhammad a scholar, he was saying that that proved that Allah was a person.
This scholar, he was saying that that proves that Allah was a person because.
His hand was on Muhammad's shoulder.
So his hands were on Muhammad. Peace be upon him on his shoulder. So when Lord Chaitanya met the Chankazi, he refuted some of the teachings of the Quran.
Scriptures.
And we know that there are some contradictions.
So the Chankasi said, we know that our scriptures are relatively new and we know that there are some contradictions. Next one Pilgrimage. Many topics are known and many superstitions are removed by going to pilgrimage. People come here to Mayapur on pilgrimage. So we should receive them and then preach to them. Proper judgment. Eleventh, proper judgment or discrimination is always to be discussed. He who does not have such discrimination as to what is the world, who am I who create the world, what is my duty? What will happen to me by doing it? It's not counted among the human beings. The only difference between animals and humans is that animals have zero intelligence. Humans are capable of that judgment. Knowledge of the self is the result of proper judgment.
Animals are. They eat fright.
So the animals they eat fright propagate.
I can't understand.
But they can't understand the self. They don't have any intelligence like that.
So human being is only.
If the human beings are only engaged in the animalistic activities then they are only animals. Etiquette, okay? Manners and virtuous. The behavior that the sadhus in the past have Followed and instructed to be followed are Etiquette.
Is the manners. The activities was once in a probable light.
So the etiquette are the manners that one should follow in a polite human society. So this is the end, okay? One who follows the principles and instructions enjoined by great sages. The past can utilize these instructions for practical purposes. Such a person can very easily enjoy life and pleasures. A foolish person who manufactures his own ways and means through mental speculation and does not recognize the authority of the sages who lay down impeachable direction is simply unsuccessful. Again and again his Attempts Srimad Bhagavatam 4.18.45 Etiquette changes from time to time like the specific Yajnic activity of killing of cows and bulls for rejuvenation practiced by the virtuous man in the Satya Treta and Dwapara Yugas has been abolished in the age of Kali. All rules made in the past are to be examined through proper judgment and adapted as etiquette.
So previous ages Brahmins more powerful so.
In the previous ages the Brahmins were more powerful.
They don't have that power they used.
To have in Kali Yuga they don't have the power they used to have.
Therefore certain activities are prohibited.
Therefore certain activities are prohibited. Sri Sri Radha Madhava Sakivenda Mai Purchandragiraj Maharaj Ki Shimati Chitra Saki Ki Shishi Panchatatwaki Shishi Pilad Nishingadevaki Shila Pravaki Shila Jayapataka Swami Guru Maharaj please bless all of them.
