20241027- Second Stream — Rules of Practicing Bhakti part -2

This is a recorded discourse (Oct 2024) by Jaya Pataka Swami reading and explaining Shri Chaitanya Shikshamrita — Second Stream: Rules of Practicing Bhakti (part 2). The talk focuses on Shravana (hearing) as a primary devotional practice: its six scriptural purposes/symptoms, distinctions among types of listening (scripture, names, music, discourses), and practical prescriptions for devotional music (avoid sense-gratifying music; prefer music that evokes Krishna’s pastimes). The speaker outlines five types of kirtan (shastra kirtan; nama & leela; stava; vigyapati with its three subtypes; japa) and emphasizes using the senses (smell, sight/darshana, touch) only in relation to service to Krishna. The session concludes with community announcements and a book-distribution appeal (Bhagavad Gita sponsorships, donor acknowledgements, and prayers for Guru Maharaj).
So we're continuing the reading of Shri Chaitanya Shikshamrita by Satchitananda Srila Bhakti Vinod Thakur. Today's section is titled Second Stream the Rules of Practicing Bhakti Vati Bhakti Part 2 the Shravana practice Hearing is threefold. Listening to scriptures, listening to the names of the Lord and listening to music related to the Lord and listening to devotional discourses. Listening to the philosophical truths about the Lord. Listening to philosophical truths about the Lord Description of the pastimes of the Lord by way of Shrimad Bhagavat Shravana Listening to the Vaishnava's life and character. Puranic history of Vaishnava's Samsara can be called Shastra Shravana Listening to all the Tattva Granthas with the meaning of Vedanta written by the great devotee authors to defeat the Avaishnava Siddhanta should be known as the main act of practicing service to God. Bhagwar Bhakti alone is the purpose of all scriptures. These six symptoms have been determined. Have been determined the purpose of the scripture viz. 1 upakrama, 2 upa samahar, 3. Abhihasa, 4. Fala, 5. Arthavada and 6 upapati. So 3 approvals. Haribhakti indicated by these six symptoms is the purport of the Vedic scriptures.
Hearing the verse of the Name so.
Healing is first of the nine devotional practices.
Lectures. All. All the details are given here. I want to so in regards to.
Healing the Shastra there are a lot of details and those details have been shared here by Srila Bhaktiv.
No, Thakur, I can say that none of it's.
So we can see that there are a lot of benefits that from hearing the Shastra.
Okay. And the six parts of hearing different Sanskrit words for each part are detailed.
So there are six parts of healing the Shastra and. And they are given in Sanskrit. Here they are the details.
What I understood is that this scripture written by Ra those in the details.
So what we have understood is that this. This scripture written by Srila Bhakti Thakur, it goes into details.
So Shravana hearing seems like a simple thing.
So Shravana we're hearing seems like a simple thing.
Here you see the so details again.
But here we see that there's so many details given. Okay. Another aspect of Shravana one should listen only to that music which does not aim to gratify the senses but practices devotion through the descriptions of the Pastimes of the Lord, the music that enriches the hearing senses and the mind's attachment to the sense objects should be abandoned at a distance during the time of service. Hear musical instruments related to prayers.
So two kinds of hearing.
So there are two. There are two kinds of hearing music.
Some music is very attractive to the ears.
So some music is very attractive to the ears.
Is devotional and also meditate on the large pastimes and holidays.
But other music is devotional and helps one to meditate on Lord's pastimes and qualities.
Hear the music which is centered around the Lord.
So the devotees, they hear the music which is centered around the Lord.
So you see that.
So we see that the music that they play in the modern bands, his sense gratification, it doesn't help you to remember the Lord.
Draw your mind to Kaja.
So if music can attract your mind to Krishna, can draw your mind to Krishna, that music is useful.
Okay?
The practice of kirtan is excellent. So how many of you think that the practice of kirtan is excellent? As mentioned above, the five types of kirtan are 1. Shastra Kirtan 2 Kirtan of Nama and Leela 3. Kirtan of Stava Part 4 Vigyapati A request, an entreaty and five japa. The Nama and Leela is done through Kirtan speech, lecture, explanation and song. Vigyapati request for entreaty is of three types. Pranama prayer with wholehearted submission of mind, body and everything to the Lord 2 Danya Bodhika making known one's insignificance and worthlessness and 3 Lalasamayi intense yearning for the personal service of the Lord. Soft recitation or vibration of the mantra is called Japa.
So when I say that.
So we see that there are different types of kirtan and and they help one to bring the mind to Krishna.
So kirtan is rather to focus thinking on Krishna.
So kirtan is a primary method to focus the thinking on Krishna. So there are five types of kirtan.
Second type, kids of Odava and Leela.
And the second type Kirtan of Nama and Leela. And this type of Kirtan of Naaman Leela can be done through Kirtan, through speech, through lecture, through an explanation and song.
Three times.
It's of three types. One one Prama prayer with wholehearted submission of mind, body and everything to the Lord Dika making known one's insignificance and worthlessness and Three Lalasamayi. An intense yearning for personal service of the Lord.
Serving the Lord is a major mercy of the Lord.
So serving the Lord is a major mercy of the Lord.
They think that in one universe, millions of planets.
So we think that in one universe there are millions of planets and in each planet there are kodi, Kodi Jivas.
So.
How insinuate we are and how insignificant we are. We are.
Krishna is so great around us.
Krishna is so great. There is one Krishna and their Koti. Koti of Vermandas, Jeeva Koti. Just one Jiva and we are just one Jiva. And we are on the. We are a human being on the Earth planet.
8 or 9,809,000,000,000 Other living entities also.
And there are other living entities also.
All those we also very infinite.
So we are also very insignificant.
But we are planets. I think a human being is that we can get a personal service to Krishna.
But the advantage of being a human is that we can get a personal service to Lord Krishna.
Okay.
Practice the smelling service of God to the olfactory senses. By smelling fragrances like flowers, tulasi, sandalwood, frankincense, garlands, camphor that are offered to the Lord. By smelling fragrances that are not offered to the Lord. Attachment to the trivial senses is enhanced. It should be carefully abandoned. I think there's a word missing there. Lead to love.
So attached to knowing things are right and offer to the Lord.
So someone is so attached that these things are not offered to the Lord.
They should abandon that such attachment to things that are offered to the Lord.
And switch their attachment to the things that are offered to the Lord. Okay. Shri Murti Darshana obtaining His merciful glance. Darshan of a devotee, Darshan of a Tirtha holy place. Darshan of the Lord's temples, Darshan of the yatras etc. And Darshan of the images. Remembering the Lord by all these one does the practice of Darshana, the functions of sense organs of seeing, throw the living entity into the well of material sense objects through Darshana. It is one's duty to abandon it. Whatever is seen in the world should be mixed with the Bhagavata Sambhanda relationship with the Lord.
So.
Does it work? It's working fine. Okay.
So doctors told me to avoid the crowds.
So doctors told me to avoid the crowds.
Because. So here you go after the crash is over.
So I go after the class is over. 10 in the morning when, when people are not there to take Darshan.
All the people in Our temple. But all the people in our temple.
There are all these people in the temple. But at 10 o' clock there are less people.
Relatively.
Relatively.
Because people go and eat their breakfast.
Because people go and eat their breakfast.
I see the Lord.
So we see the lordships Lord Sri Panchatapa Shihada, Madhav and Ashasakhi Mayapu Chandra. Lord Narmadev, Srila Prabhupada and now they also have the Dharam and the deities of Madhuriya, Shoda and Krishna.
Is relationship with the Lord.
So Yashoda Damudar is the relation. Mother Yashoda is building a so it's Bhagwat Samanda making a relationship with the Lord, the deity of Vishuda and Namodar. Okay, continuing the skin the sense of touch does the touching sensation. It is the duty of a Vaidi Bhakta to refrain from touching external bodies or objects and obtain the pleasure of touching the Lord's deity form during the service. Devotees of the Lord gets indescribable happiness by touch and embrace. The sense of touch is very strong. Due to this, the sin of bad association and association of women for the living entities occurs. The devotees should take such a firm vow that whatever relationship may be, they will not touch anything without devotion to God. What nit is not it is not only that which is connected to the body can be called touch but the sense of happiness that is stimulated in the mind is also called touch. One should remember this resolution in the case of all sense functions, not just touch. Okay, go up. Go up.
How are the senses are telltale to the Lord.
So how all of the senses are dovetailed to the Lord.
That he touch?
So we touched Guru's lotus feet.
Yeah.
The deities.
I say that in the here's all these sense of touch. We believe that we can use all essential perceptions.
So we believe you can use all the essential perceptions.
In relation to Krishna.
In relationship to Ka.
This way we're not Mayavadis. We're not Mayavadis use our senses to always keep our mind on Krishna.
So we use our senses to keep our mind always on Krishna.
So agrihastas how they have permission to touch their husband or wife.
So agriyastas they have the permission to touch their husbands or wives.
And what one passes through the Grihashta Ashram then on the other ashrams of the.
So when one passes to the and the grass ashram and the other ashramas and in those ashramas one does not touch anything which is not related to Krishna.
So we gotta serve the happiness serve the Lord.
So we get a very special happiness when we serve the Lord.
Senses to perceive the Lord.
And we use our senses to perceive the Lord. Like we have Sri Ramadhav and Ashtrakis.
So much connected with Krishna.
Sir Shimiti, Adanani and Ashasakis. There's so much elated with Krishna such that all their senses are dovetailed in service to Krishna.
So they have practice.
So they have achieved the highest Yoga practice.
Is Krishna Rayana.
Even Lord Chaitanya is Lord Krishna in the mood of Smti Radharani because he.
Wanted to find out what was the ecstasy that Lord he had and serving him.
Because he wanted to find out what is ecstasy that a devotee feels in serving him.
That's why he had to become a devotee.
And therefore he had to become a devotee. So we are very fortunate that we are here in the Navadib Dham.
Our sons are all.
Where the Lord assumes the role of a devotee.
You have some Bhoga flower in your hand. Please chant the mantra behind me. Oh sorry.
