20241028 - There are twelve practices related to the limbs of devotional service

A recorded Vaishnava spiritual discourse (YouTube) delivered by Guru Maharaj on 2024-10-28 that explains the "twelve practices related to the limbs of devotional service," contrasts material taste with Krishna prasadam, and describes both physical and mental devotional practices. The talk includes anecdotes about Srila Prabhupada (circa 1969), a numbered list of the twelve bodily practices (tandava, dandavat pranam, abhittana, anuvajjah, visiting holy places, circumambulation, serving guru/Vaishnavas, serving the deity, performing archana, bathing in sacred rivers, wearing Vaishnava symbols, marking the body with names), mental practices (memory/Nama Smriti and Mantra Smriti, meditation, surrender, servitude, inquiry), a quotation from Bhagavad-gita (12.6–7), and extended community announcements about book distribution, sponsorships (1:10 Bhagavad-gita to small book ratio), pujas, and prasadam distribution. The recording ends with prayers and gratitude.

Twelve.
Bhagavad-gita As It Is, chapter 12, verses 6–7.
May 28, 1975.
Hare Krishna. Dear devotees, today we will continue with the reading from Sri Chaitanya Shikshamrita Thakur. So we'll continue from reading from. There are two kinds of practice related to taste. First, honoring prasadam and second, tasting the nectar of the Lord's lotus feed. A devotee should not taste anything other than the Lord's prasadam. One's sense of taste in material objects will gradually strengthen one's materialistic tendencies. Both the Lord's prasadam and the prasadam of the devotees are to be relished and are nourishing. Nourishing to the practice of devotional Service. There are 12 practices related to the limbs of devotional service. So we should eat Krishna prasadam.
That will increase desires.
So that would increase one's desire for devotional service.
Material objects taste.
And the material objects taste would promote materialism.
So we should take the Lord's prasadam and prasadam of the devotees.
So we should take the Lord's prasadam and the prasadam of the devotees. The prasadam, the Lord's prasadam and the devotees Prasadam are to be relished and are nourishing. There are 12 practice, 12 practice related to the limbs of devotional service.
1969.
So in 1969 or so Srila Prabhupada came to Boston.
I was in Canada and I came.
Down and I was in Canada and I came down.
So Harold was doing a class in Darshan.
So Srila Prabhupada was giving a class in Darshan.
Then we went into his room and started a big.
And then he went to his room and we served him a big plate of prasadam.
So it was winter, so there was snow.
So then he came up to some places and it was winter and there was snow.
Ran upstairs remembering that there was prasada. Oh.
And then I ran upstairs remembering there was prasadam there. So one sannyasi was already there and he was taking the prasad.
So I was not a Sannyasi at that time.
I was not a Sannyasi that time. But I took some prasadam. As soon as I took the prasad, a pujari walked into the room.
Hi. Started yelling.
What are you doing? Hey. Started yelling.
What are you doing?
It's the proud parts plate. So it says the prasadam of Krishna or his devotees should be taken. So I remembered this pastime. Srila Prabhupada dikhi. There are 12 practices related to the limbs of devotional service. First, dancing. Second, offering obeisances like a stick. Third.
How can you offer obeisance like A stick.
When I was a new devotee, I thought how can we offer obeisance like a stick.
Falling down.
So I tried falling down. I got hurt.
Hit my head.
It hit my head.
Then I understood you lay down all the evidence flat legs.
So then I. Then I learned that you should offer obeisances flat like a stake.
Why not falling like a steak?
But not falling like a steak.
I could see offering like a stick.
I could see offering obeisance like a stick.
Literally we don't know anything.
So I was thinking literally we didn't know anything. Rising to show respect. Fourth, following the Lord. Fifth, visiting the places where he resides. Sixth, circumambulating. Seventh, serving the Guru and the Vaishnavas. Eighth, serving the deity. Ninth, performing Archana worship. Tenth, bathing in holy rivers imbued with the Lord's present. Eleventh, wearing Vaishnava symbols and twelfth, marking the body with the names of the Lord. Tandava refers to dancing Dandavad Pranam which means offering full prostitution with eight limbs should be performed. Abhittana is rising to show respect upon seeing the deity or a devotee of the Lord. Anuvajjah is following the Lord by walking behind him. The places of residence include temples, holy places and the homes of Vaishnavas. Visiting these places is considered essential. Archana refers to the worship of the Lord with proper ingredients. Bathing in sacred waters of the Ganges, Yamuna and other holy rivers is called bathing. Imbued with the presence of the Lord, one should wear Vaishnava symbols given by the Acharya such as Tilaka and Mala. Additionally, one should mark the body with the names of the Lord using sandalwood paste.
That one really stands out or.
So. When they open the deities, everybody stands up or offers their pranams. Praise their pranams. Whenever Srila Prabhupada used to walk into the room, we would rise to show respect.
Sam.
So I see that one should wear the symbols given by the Vaishnavacharyas.
Tilak and Mala.
Such as Tilak and Mala.
How? I see how the ladies wear tilak here.
Now I see some of the ladies wear Tilak here. On the forehead.
They don't wear necessarily. On the other parts.
They don't necessarily wear it on the other parts. You should wear tailor on all the 12 parts.
Okay.
In all physical practices, it's the duty to infuse them with devotion. Should I read it again? In all physical practices, it is the duty to infuse them with devotion. These various form of bodily devotional practices are established duty for devotees. Following Vaiv Bhakti, the embodied soul is bound by living within the body. Thus, while possessing a body, one should ensure that the body's tendency to not turn away from the Lord. Nevertheless, all the necessary activities for maintaining the body should be infused with God consciousness, thereby nurturing one's devotional service. This is their significance.
Visiting one of his Godbrothers.
So Prabhupada was meeting his God brothers in the Golia mad across the river.
One of his God brothers disciples.
So one of them was his godbrother's disciple who was a Brahmachari. Srila Prabhupada was inviting his God brothers.
You don't. You don't put your t lock on.
So he told Srila Prabhupada, you don't put your tilak on.
It's not his position to start Prabhupada.
It's not his position to instruct Srila Prabhupada.
So Prabhupada, I don't have to worthy luck.
Prabhupada told him, I don't have to be pray luck. I'm a Paramahamsa.
Yeah.
And then the Brahmachari laughed and then he shut down and Srila Prabhupada put on his tea lock.
So was it the Brahmacharya?
The Brahmachari wasn't in a position to advise Srila Prabhupada. 2. Mental practice now we will discuss mental practices. While all bodily discussions involve the mind's actions, but there are certain mental actions that may exist without being expressed through the body. This action distinct from physical actions are termed mental practices. Memory, thought, humility of the heart, mood, inquiry and acquisition of knowledge are categorized as purely mental activities. Mental practices are divided into five types. First memory Second meditation Third Surrender Fourth servitude Fifth inquiry.
So Mohammed Al Thakhar is describing each of these five things.
Shashila Bhakti Binothakar is describing each of these five things.
And he's really going into the details.
So he's really going into the details. First memory Smriti. There are two types of memory. Nama Smriti and Mantra Smriti. Nama Smriti is the recollection of the holy name on the Kosa beads.
Is there anything on that side?
Okay. Mantra Smriti is the remembrance of the mantras. While counting on fingers.
Would like to say anything on the Tulsi beads.
We chant our Hare Krishna Japa on the Tulsi beads. So this is called as Namasmriti or the recollection of the holy names.
Hello.
So there are three types of chanting.
Mental, soft, soft and out loud.
And out loud. So one time a lady asked Harida Stucker, isn't the mental chanting better?
Because it's more subtle?
Because it's more subtle.
I know loud chanting is a hundred times better.
But Hari Rastakar said loud chanting is a hundred times better.
Higher on the right. Insects, lice, plants, anyone within your shout.
So then you liberate insects, plants, anyone within your shout. So Gurmaj will end with this quote from Bhagavad Gita. Is this just a note from the quote? But those who worship me, giving up all their activities unto me, being devoted to me without deviation, engaged in devotional service and always meditating upon me, having fixed their minds upon me, O son of Pritha, for them I am swift deliverer from the ocean of birth and death. Quoted from Bhagavad Gita as it is 12th chapter, verses six and seven the end.
So I had my dialysis today.
I had my. So I had my dialysis today.
I feel a bit tired.
Sound a bit tired.
Krishna.
So Krishna is recommending those who worship Krishna. Being devoted to Krishna without deviation, being engaged in devotional service and always meditating on Krishna. And always meditating on Krishna, fix their minds. Having fixed their minds on Krishna, he.
Is a swift deliverer from the ocean of birth and death.
He is the swift deliverer from the ocean of birth and death for them.
Disciples are left already today we have.
Seven or eight disciples who who have left their bodies. So by serving Krishna we can be delivered from birth and death. So Guru Maharaj is sending out prasadam for all of you. So please collect it from Siddhari Prabhu. Hare Krishna Kurumaraj Blessings to all of them.
