20241115 - What is association?

Jaya Pataka Swami discusses association and Vaishnava conduct, warning against habits like excessive sleep and intoxicants that degrade devotion. He addresses superstition, the importance of respecting all deity forms, and cultivating universal compassion through non-violence and mercy toward all beings.
Harinam Sanketanki Sa.
Mel.
Rama Ramahari Hare Sri Gurum Dhina Tharinam Sri Chaitanyam.
Hare Krishna. Dear devotees, today we will continue with the reading from Sri Chaitanya Shikshamrita 6.2. Controlled by habit. This involves various practices such as daytime sleeping. Am I audible? Sleeping late in the morning, chewing betel leaves unnecessarily, eating and drinking at inappropriate times, going to the toilet at unusual times, sleeping on luxurious beds and consuming high quality food. Many people become embarrassed by these habits over time. One should only engage in what's absolutely necessary. One should only engage in what is absolutely necessary for survival and should not be controlled by unnecessary habits.
My lid sung on to destruction.
So somehow this unnecessary habit may lead someone to distraction.
Those are Brad Hallets on a also.
So due to bad habits, one may not advance. Spiritually controlled by intoxicants.
Oh, this is a very dangerous one.
Oh, this is a very dangerous one. The consumption of intoxicants leads to many misfortunes, especially when one becomes addicted to them. And ultimately devotional service becomes contaminated with designations not to speak of alcohol, marijuana, ganja, opium, hashish, carrots, cannabis. Okay, I don't know the Bengali name. Cannabis, siddhi or even tobacco are not suitable for Vaishnavas. The use of these substances is against Vaishnava's scriptures. Smoking tobacco in particular can make one extremely dependent, even forcing them into bad company.
Some of the western countries, Canada.
In some of the western countries, things like marijuana, hashish, cannabis has become legal, not opium.
Alcohol has been legal for a long time.
Of course, alcohol had been legal for a long time. Bhakti Natakur says in in regards to smoking tobacco, one becomes extremely dependent. So even in airports, they have rooms where one can smoke.
Otherwise there's public places.
Otherwise in public places one should not smoke. So I think in Canada, in cigarette packets, they show diseased lungs.
So.
Here in my world.
So in here in Mayapur, most people are abstained or abstain from all these things.
But some people take away.
So some people sneak away and find a hidden place so they can smoke.
Martin O'Tagger is saying that taking toxins.
Bhakti Vinod Thakkar is saying taking intoxicant leads to many misfortunes.
Degraded.
Therefore one's devotion becomes degraded.
So we shouldn't become dependent on intoxication.
So we shouldn't become dependent on intoxication.
I used to smoke when I was a teenager.
I used to smoke when I was a teenager.
Some other students had a.
So somehow the students had a bet. Who breaks the smoking habits first he loses. Who smokes first, he loses.
So I won.
So I won.
But I won.
I won't.
Yeah, I won.
I want.
Yeah, I decided.
So I decided I'm doing all right without smoking. So let's continue. Okay.
So all these temporary intoxication cause you to lose your dependence.
So all this temporary intoxication causes you to lose your independence and you become.
Dependent on other things.
And you become dependent on other things. Hare Krishna. Note a quote From Srimad Bhagavatam, 11th Canto. In this material world, the conditioned soul is always inclined to sex, meat eating and intoxication. Therefore, religious scriptures never actually encourage such activities. Although the scriptural injunctions provide for sex through sacred marriage, for meat eating through sacrificial offerings, and for intoxication through the acceptance of ritual cups of wine, such ceremonies are meant for the ultimate purpose of renunciation. Those sinful persons who are ignorant of actual religious principles yet consider themselves to be completely pious without compunction. How do you pronounce that compunction? Commit violence against innocent animals who are fully trusting in them. In their next lives, such sinful person will be eaten by the same creatures they have killed in this world. So.
It shows how Ohana don't like.
So this shows how the karma comes back to you.
Is a word for meat.
Mamsa is a word for meat in Sanskrit. In Bengali, mangsa means I kill you, you kill me. So we kill an animal to eat it. In the next life, the animal kills us.
So is a heart.
So we should not engage in this kind of a religious practice. Being controlled by superstition. Being controlled by superstition is a major nuisance. Superstitions give rise to biases. And when biases arise, respect for the truth vanishes. Those who have not achieved knowledge of the absolute truth yet who are still beyond the darkness of complete ignorance, generally follow the threefold path of pious material life, namely, religiosity, economic development and sense gratification. Not having time to reflect on higher purpose, they become the killers of their own soul. The killers of the soul are never peaceful because they consider that human intelligence is ultimately meant for expanding material life, thus neglecting their real spiritual duties. They are always in distress. They are filled with great hopes and dreams. But unfortunately, these are always destroyed by the inevitable march of time. Wearing Vaishnava symbols is considered a part of Vaidip. Okay, I'm done. Gurma. This. I think. Okay, okay. Wearing Vaishnava symbol is considered a part of Vaidipakti by this practicing devotional service to the Lord in relation to the body is done. However, thinking that these symbols alone define a Vaishnava is merely a Sampradaya bias in the form of superstition. Under the influence of this superstition, many disrespect genuine Vaiavas who do not bear the symbols. Consequently, if they do not gain saintly association within their sampradaya, they do not strive to seek saintly association elsewhere. Due to the grip of superstition, without saintly association, no auspiciousness can be achieved. Thus, being controlled by superstition is a dreadful nuisance. Moreover, individuals bound by varnasrama superstitions often lack an interest in the highest truth of devotion. Sometimes self destructive hatred also arises. So.
Many things I fall under superstition.
So many things may fall under superstition.
Someone thinks that those who are Vaishnava symbols are saintly.
So if someone thinks those have Vaishnava symbols, those who have Vaishnava symbols are saintly. In one sense it's like a superstition. Saintly behavior includes proper diet etc. Not taking intoxication. No.
So one is not doing the things.
But.
He'S angry.
One is doing all those things and he's wearing tea luck. Then he's not saintly. So that's a type of superstition. So one need good saintly association. Without saintly association, one cannot achieve spiritual success.
So someone has some superstition as a nuisance.
If someone has some superstition, then that's a nuisance. So Srila Bhakti Vinath Thakur. He was working for the government.
And the British Rajah were til out onto the British office.
So maybe he couldn't wear tilak until the British office. That doesn't mean he wasn't a saint.
Apart from British office, his practices were very saintly.
Apart from being in the British office, his practices were very saintly. So.
This is an interesting thing that one should saint saintly association.
So this is an important thing that one should seek saintly association.
Within the Sampradaya tend not to look Lord elsewhere.
If they don't gain within the Sampradaya, then they tend not to look elsewhere.
So anything which happens one things are strict. Maybe just to.
So anything which happen may not be auspicious. It's due to superstition.
One thing is.
So one thing. Lord Chaitanya asked Ramananda Rai to tell the higher truth. How do you achieve success in your life?
Heart.
So he coated some smriti Varnashrama. He quoted some smriti and said that Varnashram is the best. So Lord Chaitanya said this is external. Go on, go on. Hear about your ahikohorai.
One may be born in a Brahmin family but he doesn't follow any principles.
One may be born in a Brahmin family but he doesn't follow any principles.
So this is considered a kind of Vana superstition.
So this is considered a kind of Varnashrama superstition.
And they don't try to understand the higher truth of devotion.
So they don't try to understand the higher truth of devotion. Next. So number seven Important one Disrespecting other deities it is strictly forbidden to disrespect other deities. As mentioned in Rmad Bhagavatam 1.2.2, 23, 26 and 27. The transcendental personality of Godhead is indirectly associated with the three modes of material nature, namely passion, goodness and ignorance and just for the material world's creation, maintenance and destruction. He accepts the three qualitative forms of Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva. Of these three, all human beings can derive ultimate benefit from Vishnu, the form of quality of goodness. Those who are serious about liberation are certainly non envious and they respect all. Yet they reject the horrible and ghastly forms of the demigods and worship only the all blissful forms of Lord Vishnu and his plenary portions. Those who are in the modes of passion and ignorance worship those who are in the same category, namely the forefathers, other living entities and the demigods who are in charge of the cosmic activities for they are erst by the desire to be materially benefited with women, wealth, power and progeny. There are two types of demigods, special incarnations of God and empowered living beings. It's our duty to be respectful to all incarnations of God. There is no need for further judgment on this matter. Living entities who have been granted with the power who have been granted the power to govern and maintain the world through the Lord's grace are counted amongst the demigods. Those beings are worshipped by countless others. By the logic of Shama Sila Bhajanti Vai worship those in the same category. Vaishnava should not disrespect these deities out of jealousy. They should offer proper respect to them and pray for the blessings of Krishna. Bhakti do not disrespect any living entity in different countries. The symbols of deity worship that are venerated should all be respected. Respecting these symbols is essential. Respecting these symbols is essential since they teach devotion to the lower ranking beings. Disrespect increases one's arrogance and diminishes humility making the mind unfit for being seat of devotion. So even though the devotees worship the form of Vishnu.
Yes, he is all of the moral goodness. He is all auspicious.
Because he is over the mode of goodness. And he is all auspicious to everyone.
We not just instruct our passion and ignorance.
So we don't respect the Devas who are in charge of passion and ignorance.
One thing is that we offer obediences to the spg.
One thing is that we offer obeisances to the spg, the supreme personality of Godhead with our left side and to the devas we offer with our right.
Side because we consider that we are also having obediences to Vishnu because we.
Consider that they are also offering their obeisances to Lord Vishnu. Nearby Nithai's birthplace we have a temple.
6 km around.
6 km there is a therapit, a temple to the form of Kali. More people go there.
Yes. Sadhu there plan the yacht cities.
The Sadhu who worship there claims to have siddhis.
So I went there one time.
So I went there one time and.
I turned my right side pranam to Kali.
So I offered my right side pranams to Kali.
I could relate with Kali more than all her worshipers.
And I could relate with Kali more than all her worshipers.
The worshipers.
So the worshippers, they have a very, how to say, A fearful consciousness.
I can see that.
I can see that she was.
Performing her service to Krishna.
So I could see that she was performing her service to Krishna.
Although the road is Indonesia, one of.
The.
Farms palm nuts.
So in Malaysia, in one of our farms they have palm nuts.
There was a great kind of relationship between David Rock us. There was a big working in the shooting.
So there was a clash between the Devi worshippers and our devotees working in the Ram temple. Oh, Palam estate. Okay, I got it. So I offered. I went and I offered my right side obeisances to Devi and then went to the Ram temple and offered my left side obeisances.
That broke the ice and that's all. I don't restructure.
So we should. So that brought to peace. We should offer and pay respects to them and pray for Krishna. Bhakti, some of the Gopis, they prayed to Katyani to get Krishna as their husband. That was the Leela. That was the Leela when Krishna was taking away their clothes whilst they were bathing in the Yamuna.
That a woman should never originate.
Because that's a principle. The woman should never appear naked except in front of their husband. So in the true sense. In the true sense, Krishna was. So in the true sense, Krishna was satisfying all the Gopis who were praying to Katyani to get him as their husband. So we should be very clear with the difference between what the Devas Devis Vishnu are representing Hare Krishna. So we'll continue tomorrow.
Hold on.
The end.
Next one. Next one.
Next one.
Causing anxiety to all beings.
Gurma, it's too. It's an intense topic. We'll continue to. It's an intense topic. We can continue tomorrow. No, we are worried about you, Guru Maharaj. Causing anxiety to all beings. Okay, this is the last one. One should not cause anxiety to other living beings. Translation A quote from Srimad Bhagavatam in the translation. If a human being is engaged in sinful, irreligious activities either because of bad association or because of his failure to control his senses, then such a person will certainly develop a personality full of material desires. He thus becomes miserly toward others, greedy and always anxious to exploit the bodies of women. The mind is so polluted, one becomes violent and aggressive and without the authority of the Vedic injunction, slaughters innocent animals for sense gratification, worshipping ghosts, spirits. The bewildered person falls fully into the grip of unauthorized activities and thus goes to hell where he receives a material body infected by the darkest modes of nature. Killing living beings for the purpose of gathering one's own food is a type of action that creates anxiety for other living beings. Actions such as speaking about other person's inauspiciousness, criticizing others, engaging in conflicts, using harsh words, giving false testimony, hindering others convenience for one's own pomp, and various other actions that creates anxiety for other living beings. Vaidibha should carefully avoid such actions. Violence, theft, wasting others wealth, causing harm and coveting others are all forms of disturbance. It's necessary to consider the impact of disturbing other living beings. Those who embrace devotion naturally develop compassion towards all beings. Tasmat Sarveshubhu Teshu Dayam Kuruta Suhurdam Bhavam asuram unmucha Yaya tushchati adukshaha. Therefore, my dear young friends born of demons. This is from Prahlad Maharaj's prayers. Please act in such a way that the Supreme Lord who is beyond the conception of material knowledge will be satisfied. Give up the demoniac nature and act without enmity or Duality show mercy to all living entities by enlightening them in devotional service thus becomes their well wishes. Mercy does not have a separate existence from bhakti. The function that when dedicated to the Supreme Lord is called devotional love. That becomes a form of friendship, mercy and indifference towards other living beings. This is an inherent characteristic of the soul's eternal occupational duty in the state of Vaikuntha. State of Vaikuntha is solely friendship and the conditioned state is. In the conditioned state it is expressed as friendship, mercy and indifference in relation to different persons representing various aspects of mercy within the soul's eternal occupational duty. In the case of conditioned souls, compassion is initially very stunted and is focused on strong attachment to one's own body. As it blossoms, it extends to family members. When it blossoms further, it includes those of the same caste. Further blossoming extends it to fellow countrymen of the same caste, then to all countrymen, then to all humans and ultimately when fully blossomed, to all living entities. Sorry, sorry. All living beings known as special kind of tender emotion. In English, what is called patriotism refers to compassion toward fellow countrymen of the same caste. Philanthropy refers to compassion towards all humans. Vaishnavas cannot remain confined to these narrow thoughts. Vaiavas cannot remain confined. Okay, narrow. Why is it repeated twice for them? The highest form of compassion devoid of all disturbances is towards all living entities. The ultimate emotion they embrace is the supreme tenderness towards all life, free from any disturbance to other beings. So.
When I have compassion, people of the same family.
So one may have compassion to the people of their same family. Of the same family, people of the same caste.
Like that.
You can see it like that.
Pure Vaishnavism. Is that your loss that charge all living beings.
But pure Vaishnavism set you to become compassionate towards all living entities.
All living beings.
When all living beings feel not fearful or disturbed by you.
The Lord is our Ka.
So the devotees of Krishna, those who are doing vaidi bhakti.
And compassionate, they're very merciful.
So they are very merciful and compassionate to all living beings. So he says patriotism means being merciful to your own countrymen.
Ukrainian patriots.
Oh, someone is fight. What did you say, Gurmaj? I didn't get that. Oh, okay, okay, okay. Got okay. When the Russians were fighting with the Ukraine, Ukrainians, it was called as patriotism.
When I kill some Russians, they're considered patriots.
And when the Ukrainians kill some Russians and they are considered as patriots. But the devotees, they don't want to kill anyone. Okay?
So of the tender to all life.
So they are tender to all life.
So this is.
If the whole world.
Was like this.
If the whole world is like this then there would be no wars.
Unfortunately many wars people not like this.
Unfortunately there are many wars and people they are not like this. So we feel great compassion for all of you nice devotees.
