Recording of a Śrīmad Bhāgavatam class given during the Safari 2025 retreat in Kumbakonam (South India). The teacher reads and explains Śrīmad Bhāgavatam 1.2.6 (bhakti as the supreme occupation), emphasizing that devotional service must be unmotivated (apratihata) and uninterrupted, and cites Srila Prabhupada’s purport and examples (modes of nature, weeds obstructing devotion). The session includes chanting, questions from devotees about practice, and event logistics: prasadam, welcoming His Holiness Jaya Pataka Swami, installation of ten pada-pīṭhas (footprint installations), and cultural programs. The setting is a multi-day safari with international and local devotees.

Uninterrupted to completely satisfy the self.
Purport by RLA Prabhupada in this statement, Sri Suta Goswami answers the first question of the sages of Naima Sharanya. The sages asked him to summarize the whole range of the revealed scriptures and present the most essential part so that fallen people or the people in general might easily take it up. The Vedas prescribe two different types of occupations for the human beings. One is called the poverty mark or the path of sense enjoyment, and the other is called the Navriti mark or the path of renunciation. The path of enjoyment is inferior and the path of sacrifice for the Supreme Lord is superior to the material existence of the living being is a disease condition of actual life. Actual life is spiritual existence or Brahma Buddha now you just hold it.
Or Brahma Buddha.
Existence where life is eternal, blissful, full of knowledge, material existence is temporary and full of miseries. There is no happiness at all. There is just a futile attempt to get rid of the miseries, and temporary cessation of misery, is falsely called happiness.
Therefore.
The path of progressive material enjoyment, which is temporary, miserable and illusory, is inferior. But devotional service to the Supreme Lord, which leads one to eternal blissful and all cognizant life, is called the superior quality of occupation. This is sometimes polluted when mixed with the inferior quality. For example, adoption of devotional service for material gain is certainly an obstruction to the progressive path of renunciation. Renunciation or abnegation for ultimate good is certainly a better occupation than enjoyment in the disease condition of life. Such enjoyment only aggravates the symptoms of disease and increases its duration. Therefore, devotional service to the Lord must be pure in quality, that is without the least desire for material enjoyment. One should therefore accept the superior quality of occupation in the form of devotional service to the Lord without any tinge of unnecessary desire, fruit of action and philosophical speculation. This alone can lead one to perpetual solace in his service. We have purposely donated Dharma as occupation because the root meaning of the word Dharma is that which sustains one's existence. A living being's sustenance of existence is to coordinate his activities with its eternal relation with the Supreme Lord. Ka Ka is the central pivot of living beings and he is all attractive living entity or eternal form amongst all other living beings or eternal forms. Each and every living being has his eternal form in the spirit spiritual existence and Krishna is the eternal attraction for all of them. Krishna is the complete whole and everything else is his part and parcel. The relation is one of the servant and the served. It is transcendental and is completely distinct from our experience in material existence. This relation of servant and served is the most congenial form of intimacy. One can realize it as devotional service progresses. Everyone should engage himself in that transcendental loving service of the Lord even in the present conditional state of material existence that will gradually give one a clue to actual life and please him to complete satisfaction.

Hare Krishna. Hare Krishna. Krishna, Krishna. So this is a verse which I think all of you are familiar with, I picked for this morning's class. The sages in Naima Sharanya began our Srimad Bhagavatam putting six questions to Sutta God Swami. And this verse today answers the first question. That's a very relevant, very important question for us to appreciate because we see there are many scriptures. There are many, many scriptures. Even though we may say they're all Vedic scriptures, but they give different opinions, they say different things and appear to be contradictory. So this sage is at n understanding the approach of Kali Yuga. They were very concerned to make it very clear to everyone what is the essence of all the scriptures. They wanted to know what is the most important point which is there to be understood from these scriptures which will benefit the people today. Here we are in the grips of Kali Yuga with the modes of material nature. The lower modes predominated by Rajaguna and Tamaguna, very powerful in our midst, even in the holy places like South India and Kumbakonam. So the sages of Naima Sharanya, they're concerned. They have that compassionate nature. They're concerned for the people's benefit. Therefore, they ask this question. The son of Rumaharsan, he's well versed. He had heard Rmad Bhagavatam from Sukadeva Goswami when Sukadeva Goswami instructed Maharaj Parikshit. So he was well prepared to answer these inquiries. It's important for us that when we come to the Ka conscious centers, that we come with a mind ready to hear, ready to receive transcendental knowledge. Just like when we come on safari, when we go to travel to holy places, the Shastras instruct us that the real purpose in visiting the holy places is to hear from the great souls who reside there. It is the devotees themselves that make a place holy. And this was stated very nicely by Maharaj Yudhisthir when he received vidura back into the palace after he had been visiting, after he'd been traveling for many years around the countryside, around the country, visiting holy places and associating with santos. He had come back to the home and Maharaj Yudhishthir greeted him and welcomed him, saying that you are the personification of the holy places. The devotee is the personification of the holy places because he carries the Lord in his heart. And wherever he goes, he distributes that powerful Spiritual knowledge. Of course we may say, well, the Lord is in everyone's heart. So everyone is a personification of holy places. But we should understand there is a difference between the devotees and the ordinary people.
Naam.
Foreign.
The Lord is in the heart of the common people. But they do not hear the Lord speaking to them. They do not take his guidance. But the devotees of the Lord, they hear the Lord and they reciprocate with the Lord and they respond. They take up the desire of the Lord. And we see this for example in our wonderful founder Acharya, his divine grace, AC Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada. How he could hear Krishna telling him to do certain things. Things Krishna was telling him, you have to leave home, you have to renounce, you have to accept sannyas. And he was thinking, oh no, I don't know, I don't want to do that. It wasn't his desire. But Krishna was telling him again and again, you have to do it. And similarly, Krishna told him, you have to go to the west, you have to go there. Krishna gave him the instruction, don't just go to England, go to the usa. Go there.
Krishna.
To go without money, without knowing people, to go into a foreign land, something very difficult. Most of you stay here. For those of you who stay here Tamu Nadu, then you're comfortable here. But when you go to a foreign place, then it's a different experience. But sometimes Krishna gives these kinds of instructions to his devotees. He wants his devotees to surrender more to him. So Lord Krishna has given this definition of devotional service here. How? Devotional service is not an ordinary engagement, but it is the supreme occupation for all mankind. People think, oh no, no. Lawyer, that's a good job. Doctor, that's even better job. Maybe lawyer, doctor, some kind of job like that. We think that's very prestigious. But according to Bhagavatam, it is not very prestigious. Rla Prabhupda used to ask people, please give me your son. You've got several sons. Give one son to me, let me train him to preach Bhagavad Gita. And they will say, oh no, no, Swamiji, my son should become a doctor. My son should be a software programmer.
Even Dr. Ahavendam.
But Srimad Bhagavatam said this devotional service, this is the supreme occupation. At the same time, Sutta Goswami qualifies the nature of devotional service, that it must be unmotivated and uninterrupted. It must be Ahaitiki, a preti hatha. The key words. We're very motivated people. We do things for what will I get? What you going to give me if I do this? So rla Prabhupada tells us devotional service means finishing up our business. That it's not a business anymore. Material life is all business. I'll give this, I'll get that. But devotional service, there's no business.
Srira prabada solvar bhakti murika kuriya sal in the jada.
In the purport. Srila Prabhupda points out how people often come to Ka Consciousness or any kind of spiritual path. They may take it up for material purposes. I was brought up in a Christian tradition and we used to pray to God, give us our daily bread. So we had that mood that God is there, he is to give us. And we would pray in that way. But coming to Ka consciousness and learning about devotional service, we develop a higher understanding of service to God. We don't pray to God to give us, but we want to give God. We want to give God to make bread and give it to Him. And thinking in that way. We want to give up everything for the pleasure of God. If we do Karma Yoga, in Karma Yoga, we're thinking, I'm giving this to God. But where there is bhakti, we understand everything is His. I'm just giving what is his. So in this way we understand how devotional service should not be motivated. Of course, when I say motivated, we must be motivated. Our motivation rather should be a pure motivation simply to please Krishna. He is the master and we are tiny servants. And then Sutta Goswami also says, devotional service must be uninterrupted. It must be continuous. We don't just practice devotional service on Sundays. You know, we come to the temple on Sunday and we have a temple program and we think, oh, that's my devotion for the week. But rather, devotion or service must be something which we are constantly doing. Everything is done for Krishna. Our eating is for Krishna. First of, we cook for Krishna, we offer to Krishna, and we eat the prasad of Lord Krishna. And we sleep for the service of Krishna that in order to keep the body fit and healthy, we have to take some rest and you have to sleep. And all of these activities which are necessary for the maintenance of the body, they are regulated in Krishna consciousness.
In the Iwara.
You cannot be a yogi. Bhagavad Gita. Lord Krishna says, you cannot be a yogi if you eat too much or eat too Little. Neither can you be a yogi if you sleep too much or sleep too little. So Srila Prabhupada explains there are two paths. Poverty mark and nivrity mark. Poverty mark is the path of sense enjoyment. If you follow that path, you make progress very slowly. Sense enjoyment. We're thinking only about what pleases my body, my senses. And we decide what I will do which will give pleasure to my body and senses. So we may engage in activities like coming to temple and so on. But we may be doing it simply for our personal sense gratification.
Nam in the mardatil koilakwaram bhagawani namsiyakudum anal in the sale kalikuda nam verum pulanin bhatir kahavo.
Just like devotional service is described in Srimad Bhagavatam by Lord Kapila, the devotional service can also be influenced by the three modes of nature. One may do devotional service in the mode of ignorance. He may be worshipping the deity. He may be doing it in the mode of ignorance. Ignorance. We come to do that. If we come to worship the deity, we didn't take bath, we didn't put on clean cloth, we didn't mark the body with tilak. We just come and worship the deity. There's some influence of the mode of ignorance. And sometimes we even perform devotional service in the mud to do harm to others. Others and devotional service and passion. We may be thinking that I will get a name for myself, people who know how pious and how religious I am, that I am such a great devotee. And we may do devotional service in an angry mood that we're thinking, why I have to do this? You know, just like somebody may ask you prabhu, can you do the Aarti today? And you say, oh, why? You always ask me to do it and you go on the altar. You're in an angry mood. And devotional service in goodness is still material. It's still under the modes of nature. Then the mod of goodness. We're performing devotional activity and we're thinking, I will destroy my past sinful activities. Instead of thinking of Krishna, we're simply thinking about our own self. That I want to destroy my past sinful activities. I want to get liberation. So this is the mode of goodness. And Lord Krishna in the Bhagavad Gita he tells us, Trigunya, Vishaya, Veda, Naish Trigunya Arjuna, rise above the modes of nature. Be transcendental to them in a Ye.
Mundu Bhagawan Shri Krishna Bhagavad.
So Sri La Rupa Goswami gives us what is the standard of pure devotion that is done simply for the pleasure of Lord Krishna Uttamam that the highest devotion that we could attain is to love Krishna without desire for material fruit of gain and without desire for liberation. One should simply serve Krishna favorably and continuously.
Rather.
And when we engage ourselves in that way, the result is we will feel completely satisfied. When we satisfy the Supreme Lord, we also become satisfied because we are his part and parcel. Just like when you put food in the stomach, then the stomach is satisfied. The whole body has strength and is nourished.
Now Vayatrika.
Or when we pour water on the root of the plant, from the root of the plant all the leaves and branches are nourished. So the personality of Godhead Lord Krishna, he is that Mula Prakriti. He is that root of the material nature. And if we satisfy him, then we will all feel satisfied. So in this way Sutta Goswami is describing the essence of all the scriptures by focusing on bhakti, pure Bhakti devoid of material desire. And the business of the devotees is to go and distribute bhakti everywhere, just like when Sutta goes was rather, Sukhadeva Goswami was asked by Maharaj Parikshit to describe the process of creation. Sukadeva Goswami first of all began reciting prayers. Before speaking on a very philosophical topic, it is customary to offer some prayers. And Sukhadeva Goswami offered very beautiful prayers there which are there in the second canto of the third chapter or fourth chapter. Srimad Bhagavatam and he one of the prayers I'd like to quote he mentions, he says, is mentioning different races of people who are addicted to sinful activities.
Of Prathani Munv in the Prarthani.
And the different races practically encompass the whole world. Practically we're all sinful people. We have taken our birth in this world which is the place of sinful activities. Swami said we can all be delivered by the mercy of the devotees of the Lord. So this same point is made in the Chaitanya Charayetamrita, the famous Bengali classic written by Srila K. Krishna does coverage Goswami describing the activities of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu. He says Kunya Bhagyawanjit Guru Krishna Prasadi Pai Bhakti Latabee that the living entities are moving through different universes one after another, taking birth in different species of life going up and down and moving through the different universes.
Adil our kurukhandra in the Madrid.
But when they actually become fortunate, when their fortune is at rough, that is when they contact the spiritual teacher or the devotees of the Lord who plant that seed of devotion in them.
Viday.
Without having that good fortune, even though you may be a rich man or a materially prosperous person, your life is not very auspicious. Our real good fortune is awakened only when we contact the devotees of the Lord who give that seed of bhakti. And when that seed of devotion is planted, then we have to nourish it. We have to water it. Just as you may plant seeds in the ground, you have to water them regularly. So we have to water that seed of devotion and we have to nourish it through the process of shravanam and.
Kirtanam and the bhatin Vive nam karampodu.
When we get that seed of devotion, we have to take care of it and protect it from the weeds which grow just like when we water, so many weeds will come up. One has to be able to distinguish the seed of devotion from the weeds. These weeds are obstructions to the growth of our devotion and they have to be removed carefully. And these weeds are things like keeping material desires, keeping material attachments, desiring, profit, adoration, distinction in the kale. These weeds are things like offenses and are chanting of the holy name. And weeds are also there in things like worship of the deity. If we do the worship of the deity not properly, then that's also another wheat. Vaishnava aparad is also very serious and very harmful to our advancement. So we have to cultivate the creeper of devotion carefully. This Ka conscious center is being established to make it easier for devotees to cultivate their devotion. Of course, Ka consciousness does not require that we have to have a big temple. Srila Prabhupada Spiritual master Om Vishnupad Sati Prabhupada he would first of all establish a printing press and he would print books. He said printing books is more important than having a big temple. The books are the brehat matanga and the books can bring. They can change the life of people. Anyway, temple worship is one of the duties of the devotees. We need to worship the deity. We have to show people how to worship the deity nicely. It ensures that we will be very strict in our regulation. And we will be also more attentive to cleanliness when we worship the deity. So we hope by establishing this nice center New people who are not aware, who are unfamiliar to Ka consciousness that they will come here and they can.
Find out more about Kaam Nambhuata.
So we will stop here and ask if there's any question. Yes. Marriage.
Hi Krishna Maharaj. Please accept my most respectful obeisances. Thank you so much for this wonderful class. I would like to ask this question that many devotees have this mood that when we are serving in a temple we are engaged in a particular service. So we should focus on that service and we need not to go many holy places. And you mentioned that when we go to holy places, that is we listen from the Acharyas. So what is the right mood? Should we stay in a particular place and be engaged there and or should we visit holy places and get v association? So we get confused.
Well, we're not just visiting holy places all the time. You know, you're just coming for a few days here you're not on the same. The safari is not all year. It's only for a few weeks, a week or two and then you go back to your normal service. So it's an encouragement to you. It can help you to become more enthusiastic in your own situation.
Thank you for your class. I have a question about the distinguishing between the weeds and the Bhakti Lata beach at the sea. So you were speaking this very important to notice the weeds growing. So some of the examples you gave are quite obvious. Vaiava parat or the need for the adoration distinction or you know, different things. But if you could just share some light of things that we may not notice subtle weeds that can grow in our heart and they can overgrow Bhaktinata beach. But we may not be aware that actually there are weeds in our devotional service.
Well, it can come about things like oh, I don't need to go to hear Srimad Bhagavad Bhagavatam. I've heard Rmad Bhagavatam so many classes. Oh, I don't need to go to Mongol Arti. I've seen so many Mongol artists. You know, this kind of attitude that our devotion different activities are not so important. We should always be eager to want to give respect to others and not a damage and not expect respect for ourselves. So we have to look for these different. You have to be constantly checking. We have to constantly check ourselves. What kind of attitude am I having? Do we have a habit to go to Mangal Aarti always despite then by the end of Aarti the time in the shrink of prayers are we finishing our rounds, you know, do we get our rounds finished? It's often coming up to midnight. I just finish my rounds. So we have to be careful. But all of our different activities, we want to be careful where we eat, what we eat, how much we eat. We have to be careful about the tongue. What are we speaking? Is it necessary? Or should I just be chanting the holy name? So when we're serious like that about devotional service and we'll have a check, we'll be constantly checking on ourselves in.
The Madhuri.
And doing our best to try to avoid these things, minimize them.
Okay? So we would like to thank very much his or less Bhakti Vidnam Nash Nashinga Swayam Maharaj for this very wonderful Bhagavatam class. Everybody with two hands up, let's loudly chant. Now it's time to hear from our safari captain Marichi Prabhu ki.
Hare Krishna. So dear devotees, you will translate to me. So. Yes, thank you for. For thanking Maharaj for the wonderful Bhagavatam class. I also want to thank his grace Harila Prabhu and his good wife. They are both family and the son it all family was born here in Kumbakona. So they're actually hosting all these programs along with all the devotees hosting this program. For the program is Banali Prabhu. Here is Grace Banali Prabhu?
No.
Okay, but we have His Grace. We have his guy Sumitra Krishna Prabhu, who is the zonal supervisor here. Yes. So Sumitra Krishna Prabhu also is here. So later on we're going to, you.
Know.
To introduce everyone properly when the temple president is here. And now we're going to announce our program for today. So today right now, right after these announcements, we can go to the basement. I don't know what everyone is taking prasadam for. Everyone downstairs, please go downstairs to the basement for the prasadam hall. Okay. So right after Prashada we coming back to the temple room and we wait for the welcoming of our safari captain, His Holiness Jaya Pataka Swami Maharaj. So we're going to do a great welcome for welcoming for him. And right in this place he going to address all of you. In this place also will take place the installation ceremonies of 10 Pada Pitams Footprints installations for three Chaitanya Mahabharata.
Okay.
Right after the Palapita will be a cultural program, will be a kids drama performed by the local kids from Kumbakonam. And will be also a wonderful and amazing cultural program performed by international Devotees from all around the world. So, so we. We're going to be here in this temple until lunch. Okay? After lunch we go in. When we go going back to the. Our. Our hotel. We're going to stop and have a darshan on the place where Sri Panchatatua from Mayapur was the casting place of Sri Panchatatwa.
I want to tell all the safari devotees that Guru Maharaj said that the Panchatatva their Sri path is in different different places. They were all born in different, different places. But he said Kumbakonam is so special because they all appeared in the same place which is Kumbakonam in their deity form. So you. This is a very unique place. You have the Sri path of all the deities in one place. So you put Prashada Mudalil Namude Virind Safari Bhaktar, Prashada Gator Columbari Anaivaram Katirikaw Adan Prasu Kumbagonam devotical Prasadam Namada Safari Prasadam service Krishna.
Thank you.
Remember safari devotee, we attain one more night here. No, tomorrow we going continue our journey to Madurai. Okay, One more night we stay here in Kumbakona. Hare Krishna. Keep watching the announcements in the safari group. Go for Prashada please. Quickly also please go first. Please.
