20260310 - Jaladuta Diary_Part_5

In this devotional recording, a group of speakers (A–E) read and discuss excerpts from Srila Prabhupada’s Jaladuta (sea‑voyage) diary, chronicling his journey from Calcutta to Boston in September 1965. They recount the Mediterranean leg—passing Malta, Sicily, and Gibraltar—describing weather, fog, and the ship’s movements. The narrative then moves to the Atlantic crossing, highlighting Prabhupada’s reliance on Krishna’s mercy, his experiences of seasickness, lurching, and spiritual sustenance from the Caitanya‑Charitāmṛta. The speakers reflect on the enormity of the venture, Prabhupada’s austerity, and his devotion to his guru, Lord Caitanya. Later, the discussion shifts to community matters: announcements of festivals (Srivasa Appearance Day), kirtan events, a story of Lord Nityananda’s lila, the Bhaktivedanta Swami Charity Trust’s development projects, and a reading of the book‑distribution score along with a brochure for His Holiness Jayapataka Swami’s 77th Basopa Puja. The tone alternates between reverent narration, reflective devotion, and informal announcements, conveying enthusiasm and gratitude toward Krishna’s grace and the community’s service.

I didn't think about passing Sicily. Probably, running, crossing Sicily.
I was just thinking about passing Sicily. And Srila Prabhupada is writing about him passing Sicily.
Sicily is part of Italy.
Sicily is a part of Italy.
Pizza place.
Sea salt place.
Wow!
Wow!
Pasta, pizza.
Oh, pasta, pizza. And Prabhupada's standing there. Pasta alla Siciliana.
Okay, so Prabhupada was passing all these places on his way.
So Prabhupada passing all these places on his way to America.
Malta, Sicily.
Malta, Sicily.
All night, throughout the night.
All night. Throughout the night. Okay. In the evening, the sky was cloudy on the 5th of September, Sunday, and they expected foggy weather, and all of them became a little gloomy. But at midnight, we passed Malta, Sicily. By God's grace, it was all right throughout the night. All right. On the 6th, Monday, today I've taken khichdi and curry. Oh wow, it was tasteful and I took them with relish, and this gave me a push forward to get renewed strength little by little. Tuesday, 7th, today is Baraha Dwadasi observed. The best atmospheric condition on the Mediterranean Sea. All along, we have seen the Algerian coast.
Oh, this is a special blessing on the geography.
So this is a special blessing on the geography. Wednesday.
On one side is seeing Italy and Malta, other side is seeing the Algeria.
So in one side is seeing Italy, Sicily and Malta, and one side is seeing Algeria.
Next.
Next. Wednesday 8th. Today at about 8 o'clock in the morning, and near about Gibraltar, we had our first experience of fog impediment. It was all dark, the ship was— and around the ship, and she stopped moving completely. She was whistling now and then to protect herself from other unseen ships being collided with. We started at about 11 again. And it— okay, 8th, uh, September 1965, at about 2:30 PM, we passed over Gibraltar Port, ending at Tarita Lighthouse, the other side of Spanish Morocco. There is regular ferry steamer service. This straight is wide above.
Shall I go large?
Yeah.
How he was going, at least step by step, into the Atlantic Ocean.
How he was going step by step into the Atlantic Ocean.
Carried by the order of his spiritual master.
Carried by the order of his spiritual master.
And, Desire to serve Lord Krishna.
And the desire to serve Lord Krishna. I'm overwhelmed. I'm overwhelmed. We are in the Atlantic. Wow. Wow. Thursday 9th, till 4 o'clock afternoon, we have crossed over the Atlantic Ocean for 24 hours. The whole day was clear and almost smooth. The whole day was clear and almost smooth. I was taking my food regularly and got some strength to struggle. There is slight lurching of the ship and I'm feeling slight headache also, but I'm struggling. But I'm struggling in the nectarian life of Sri Caitanya Charitāmta, Haribol, the source of all my vitality. So Caitanya Charitāmta was giving Prabhupāda vitality or light. Was giving Srila Prabhupada the vitality of his life.
Gauranga!
Gauranga! Gauranga!
Gauranga! Gauranga!
Gauranga!
Tenth Friday. Today the ship was plying very smoothly. I feel today better, but I am feeling separation from Vrindavan. From my Lord Sri Govinda, Gopinath, Radha Damodara, the only solace is Sri Caitanya Charitamrita, in which I am tasting the nectarine of Lord Caitanya's lila. I have left Bharat Bhumi just to execute the order of my— order of Sri Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati in pursuance of Lord Caitanya's order. I have no qualification, but I have taken up this risk just to carry out the order of His Divine Grace. I depend fully on Their mercy so far away from Vrindavan.
So, we don't have any idea how big of a venture this was for Srila Prabhupada.
So, we don't have any idea how big of a venture it was to Srila Prabhupada.
How he left Vrindavan, where he lived.
How he left Vrindavan, where he lived.
Regularly seeing the Samadhi Mandir of Rupa and Sanatan.
Jayapataka Swami. Jayapataka Swami. Always looking at the Deities of Ramana Maharshi, Living with all these Deities, Radha Damodar, Radha Govinda.
So now, he was in the Atlantic Ocean on his way to America.
So now he was in the, on the Atlantic Ocean on his way to America.
How far away from Rendang?
How far away from Rendang?
Far away from the spiritual world.
Far away from the spiritual world.
—just to execute the order of his Guru, Lord Chaitanya.
Just to execute the order of his Guru, Lord Chaitanya.
To deliver us.
To deliver us. 11th, Saturday. Today the ship ran on very smoothly. The sky was clear and there was sunshine all day. At about 7:30 in the morning, we passed on the Azores group islands under the Portugal Republic. There was again rehearsal, rehearsal of lifeboat saving at 4:30 PM. There was rehearsal of the fire brigaders also. At night, there was profuse moonlight on the ocean and considerable lurching also, but did not affect me very much as it used to do in the Arabian Sea. The Atlantic Ocean is more kind to me than all other seas so far I have crossed over. It's all Lord Krishna's mercy, grace.
Normally the Atlantic Ocean is more rough.
Normally the Atlantic Ocean is more rough.
But by Krishna's mercy it became very smooth.
By Krishna's mercy, it became very smooth to Srila Prabhupada.
And, uh, so normally the Pacific Ocean is smooth and the Atlantic Ocean is rough.
Normally the Pacific Ocean is very smooth and the Atlantic Ocean is very rough. Prabhupada is saying by Krishna's mercy The Atlantic Ocean was smooth, but Prabhupada is saying by Krishna's mercy the Atlantic Ocean is very smooth. 12th Sunday, SR day. Today is it Sri Radhashtami day? I don't know, maybe. Today there is a great deal of lurching, although Although the sky is clear, Mrs. Pandya, although a little lady, but very intelligent and learned also. She has foretold about my future. Thanks to her prediction, all blessings of Lord Krishna for her. The crisis which I supposed to have crossed is also mentioned by her. If I have crossed the crisis, then that is good will of Lord Krishna, my friend. And philosopher. In the evening, there was too much lurching and I felt a bit seasickness. I could not take my food properly. A little sweets were accepted with some relish. The lurching continued till midnight.
So the boat was lurching.
So the boat was lurching.
Prabhupada again felt seasickness.
Srila Prabhupada again felt seasickness.— and he could not eat. And he could not eat.
He took a little, few sweets. He took a little, few sweets. So, and I remember the astrologer had said that he'll go through some crisis.
So, he remembered that the astrologer has said that he would go through some crisis.
Across others, I mean, they have a— God's grace.
If he crosses through this, then he'll have Krishna's grace. Monday, 13th. Today is the 32nd day of our journey from Calcutta. After midnight yesterday, the lurching decreased and I felt relief. In the morning, I could not take my breakfast properly. Then I cooked bati chor chori. It appeared to be delicious and I was able to take some food. Today I have disclosed my mind to my companion Lord Krishna. There is a Bengali poem made by me today in this connection. At about 11 there, a little lurching, the captain tells that they had never such calmness in the Atlantic. I said, 'It is Krishna's, Lord Krishna's mercy.' His wife asked me to come back again with them so that they may have again a calm Atlantic Ocean. If the Atlantic would have shown its usual face, perhaps I would have died. But Lord Krishna has taken charge of the ship.
So, Prabhupada was saying that if the Atlantic Ocean had its normal rough form—
so Prabhupada is saying if the Atlantic Ocean had its normal rough form, you might not have survived.
And so by Krishna's mercy that he crossed the Atlantic.
So it was Krishna's mercy that he crossed through the Atlantic. At least this far.
At least this far. And so, we have to see how much, how much austerity he was doing.
So you can see how much austerity he was doing.
We want our devotional service to be very easy.
So we want our devotional service to be very easy.
But Krishna tests us.
But Krishna tests us.
He wants more difficult. He wants more difficult. But it's not easy.
So for some it's not easy.
And, um, but if we're determined, we can do it.
But if we are determined, we can do it. Just like Prabhupada did. Just like Srila Prabhupada did.
Because of that, Krishna took charge of his ship.
Because of that, Krishna took charge of his ship. Tuesday, 14th. Today is the 33rd day of our journey, and at 3 o'clock in the morning, I saw the sky cloudy. With dim moonlight. From morning till 1 o'clock, the sky remained cloudy. At 1:30 PM, there was a shower of rain. The sky is still cloudy and the wind is still blowing from southeast corner and raining at intervals. The whole day passed in that way and the wind assumed a paracyclonic phase with dense cloud resulting in rain till 9:30 with regular lightning, etc. At 10 o'clock, when I was talking to the captain, talking in the captain's room, the chief engineer, Mr. Travers, told me that he had never, he had never, he had never such experience in calm quietness of the Atlantic Ocean. There was always typhoon, cyclone, fog, etc., at least for days 'in every ship in the past, every tip in the past, sorry. It is said, I said it is Lord Krishna's grace. If such feelings as usual in Atlantic Ocean would have taken place, I would die.' So, the captain's wife was saying, 'Please come with us on the return journey.' So, the captain's wife was saying, 'Please come with us on the return journey.', and we can enjoy a peaceful Atlantic crossing. So we can enjoy a peaceful Atlantic crossing.
This engineer was saying, there will be a few hard days, typhoon, cyclone, fog, etc.
The captain, the engineer was saying, for few days we'll have typhoon, cyclone, fog, etc.
Those are, used to this, that's one thing, but Prabhupada had never gone on ocean voyage before.
Those who are used to this, that's one thing, but Prabhupada had never gone on an ocean voyage.
He was doing this.
Now, we, when we come, they got plane, 3 days and 24 hours, or 11 hours or something. So, if we are flying, we'll reach in 24 hours, 11 hours or something.
But, some people say, "Oh, I'm wiped out, I have jet lag." People say, "Oh, I'm wiped out, I'm tired, I have jet lag." But here, Prabhupada is saying, "33 days on a journey." 33 days!
So, here Prabhupada is saying, "33 days in the journey." 33 days. What an austerity. Wednesday, 15th. 15th. Oh, 30th day of our journey. Today is our third— today, 34th day of our journey. As usual, I rise up at 3 AM. When I went to the veranda, I saw the, the, the sky almost clear. There was moonshine on head, and although the wind was from southeast, was strong, the ocean was clear visioned and the ship was passing smoothly. At about 11 AM, the sky again became overcast with cloud and it is continued to see till 3 PM. There was rainfall at intervals, but after 4 o'clock the sky became clear and there was bright sunshine. I was engaged in reading Kaliya Daman Leela from Srimad Bhagavatam, specifically the prayers by Srimati Nagapattini and the last appealing prayer by Kaliya Marika. So Śrīla Prabhupāda is absorbed in the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam. Śrīla Prabhupāda arrives at Boston Harbor.
First day. Somewhere in this period, Prabhupada had a heart attack.
So somewhere in this page, Srila Prabhupada had an heart attack.
I think he was too sick to write any diary entries.
And somewhere in this trip, Prabhupada had an heart attack and he had a dream where Krishna was captaining a boat, where Krishna was captaining the boat and taking him across Atlantic Ocean.
Took him across the Atlantic Ocean. So, I'm not very proud about it. He didn't write about this.
But I don't know, but it happened. But somehow Srila Prabhupada didn't write about this, but this happened.
What time is it? 8:20.
Oh, so it's ending here. We'll end here. Tomorrow he's arriving in Boston. So tomorrow he's arriving in Boston. Yeah.
Yes.
And so I went to— where you went today?
Where did you go today, Prabhu? Baragachi. Baragachi.
Baragachi.
How was it? How was it? Haribo. You saw Nithyananda Prabhu's marriage place? Did you see Lord Nithyananda Prabhu's marriage place? Did you see the beautiful deities of Nithayagore? Everyone had the opportunity to worship. Everyone had the opportunity to worship and do abhishek for Lord Nithyananda. Everyone. Everyone.
Wow.
Yeah.
Even the villagers, the police, the children, everyone.
Police, children, everyone. Yeah. I went researching where is this place of Varanasi.
So I went researching where is this place in Varanasi. I don't know. Another one with— Baba Nanda Goswami.
I remember—
Baba Nanda Das. So, I remember going with Baba Nanda Goswami, now known as Baba Nanda Das. At that time, Baba Nanda Das.
At that time, it was Goswami. That time—
Oh! Baba Nanda Goswami, now Baba Nanda Das. He was saying so many things.
You were saying so many things. What? We found this Shaligram, Balagachi.
So we found Shaligram in Balagachi? By the side of Balagachi, a big hill. By the side of Balagachi there's a big hill. That hill is still there. Is the hill still there, Prabhu? Yes, yes. Yeah, so I don't know what's in the hill. I don't know what's in the hill?
But, so, I'm very glad that the B.S.C.T.
Bhaktivedanta Swami Charity Trust has developed that place. So, I'm very glad that B.S.C.T. Bhaktivedanta Swami Charity Trust wants to develop that place. And that the safari went there. All the Divine Grace. And establish the Lotus Feet of Lord Nithyananda Prabhu. And thank you very much. Thank you very much. Haribol. Haribol. Please accept my blessings. Please accept my blessings. Krishna Hrithirastu.
Krishna Hrithirastu.

No. His Holiness Bhaktivedya Mahaswami will address you. Now His Holiness Bhaktivedya Mahaswami will address you? Maybe, he has some program. He has a new scheme in his hand, Guru Maharaj. Those who are here from Panama.

And before yesterday, when we visit, one thing happened when we visit in Adi Shaptagram. The place of Uddaranda Thakur, there is a lila where Lord Nityananda— because Uddaranda Thakur, he wanted to cook for the Vaisnavas and was not— so Lord Nityananda went to pick up the wooden spoon for— from his— from Uddaranda Thakur. So, he planted into the Earth and a tree called a Madhavi Lata tree immediately grow. So, this original tree is there. So, when we went to have the Darshan of the tree, I saw one stick there.
