A recorded lecture from a Kṛṣṇa‑conscious teacher (Jaya/Śyāma Pātaṛaka Swami archival material) explaining the beginner’s instructions (Upadeśāmṛta) attributed to Śrīla Rūpa Gosvāmī. The speaker distinguishes purification (progressive eradication of desire) from mere atonement, outlines six senses/urges to control (speech, mind, anger; tongue, belly, genitals), and surveys practical methods (regulation of food, brahmacarya, tapasya, chanting, association with pure devotees, surrender to a spiritual master) and common pitfalls (atonement without purification; indulgence masked as practice). The talk uses stories and scriptural examples (Sukadeva, Parikṣit, Jāmbavān/Jairābhata/king episodes, Bhakti and Maya analogies) to illustrate points.
One who wants to become a perfect devotee that Krishna must become a Go Swami. Go means essences and Swami means the master. Unless one controls his senses and mind, one cannot become a Go Swami. To achieve the highest order in life by becoming a goat Swami that appeared devotee of the Lord, one must follow the instructions known as Upadesamrita which have been given here by Srila Rupa Goswami Sadupa Goswami is given many other books such as Bhakti Dasarvika, Sindhu Vidhakta, Mahdava Lika Maharava. But Upadash Namita constitutes the first instructions for neophyte devotees. One should follow these instructions very strictly. Then it will be easier to make one's life significant successful Hare Krishna. So text one just going to go discuss it systematically. Jiva Vegam Buddha Bashtavishah Malasa Crow Tell me Jam sensation. A sober person who can tolerate the urge to speak the mind's demands, the actions of anger and the urges of the tongue belly of genitals is qualified to make disciples all over the world. Somebody might think that I don't want to really make disciples all over the world. It doesn't apply to me. But as Srila Prabhupada said, these are instructions, beginning instructions that apply to everyone. So I was able to control these and they can be qualified to make disciples all over the world. Nothing factor there. But the point is that if we want to advance Ka consciousness, we also need to control these different urges. And if we want to preach Ka consciousness fairly, then we also I need to be able to control these urges and these senses. How many here like to give Krishna catches? How many like to preach would like to convince the other people. Okay, so the reply is following, I'm not going to read the purport. I'm going to do is just kind of review go to the different parts of it rather than read it. It's like a 14 page purport. Try to highlight the different points. Here Prabhupada was explaining that Sukhadev Goswami asked rather answers or questions to direction Maharaj. He wanted to know why people they do atonement and after doing atonement they still go back and do the same sinful activity again. So then Sukadev Goswami was very happy because he said actually Prakshit Maharaj really understood what was the essence of Ka consciousness. What most people are doing in religion is atonement. They commit some sin and so they do something to atone for some tapas. Here go in the church and give a. What they call that a confession. They do some kind of atonement to culture heads the sin they did. But they don't lose the desire to go on sinning. They just keep on with the same desire of joint sense gratification. So in ka consciousness we understand there's a difference between sense gratification and between devotional service. Actually we are spirit souls, eternal parts of Ka. And our real nature is to be in the spiritual atmosphere. For somehow or another we came here to this material world. And because we're in this material world and we have material bodies who are identifying with the bodies. And therefore we're just acting for the gratification of our senses. And we're getting more and more entangled in material length. So ka consciousness means now we want to get out of the material nature, out of the material bondage. We want to get back to ka. So in order to do that, we need purification. So there's a difference between purification tone. We purify our senses. We lose the desire enforcing its gratification. When we do atonement, we counteract the sin, the reaction. Say, I did the sin, for that I have to go to hell or I have to suffer some pain. We were one to suffer the pain. So we counteract that with an atonement. But we still have the desire to do more sin. So there's a big difference between purification and atonement. We're going to remain in the jail if we just do atonement. Unless we get purified, we're not going to get out of this prison house. So it's important that we actually purify our senses. Otherwise something like an elephant that say, somebody says, well, I want to go on sitting, but also change. So that may reduce the sins reactions. But if they go on singing and chanting, let us end up by taking elephant bath. Elephant goes in the water, takes the bath, comes out and takes the dirt and throws it back, throws it on her back. Have you seen that microbial elephant see it all the time. Spent hours and hours scrubbing them and getting them cleaned. And when I go out the bathtub, the swimming pool, and they go and grab some dirt and throw it, they don't feel good, clean, I guess. So if we chant and sin, then we're purifying, throwing order, purifying, throwing mortar to save. We're not going to get very clean or worse. Say somebody thinks that, well, I'll do some sin and then I'll chant get rid of the sin. Then I'LL do some more sin and then chant some more. So this is which offense have the Holy Name? Seventh offense. So if we do that, we're going to be totally neutralizing the Holy Name won't even work for us to get rid of sinful reactions. So we don't want to purposely sin and then chant and get rid of it. Although some people think this may be. We're not really panned. This may be sitting and chanting and that's having some gradual effect. But they're not going to make very much advancement. There's other people that they want, they do just the atonement, but actually do not realize it doesn't like pious activity, doesn't counteract sin, only the sacrifices counteract sin. There's two different accounts we have. We have one account for bias activity and one account for sinto. One for Punya and one for Papa. So when we put it out, Punya account will give us more sense gratification. But we put in the Pav account that gives us more suffering. We do more sinful activities, we suffer, we do Punya, we enjoy it. So some people that stop there enjoying the same time, he's a rich man, he's got Mercedes Benz and he's got marriage problems and he's got legal problems and he's got ulcers. So he's enjoying on the one hand and he's suffering at the same time. Have you ever seen him? So it doesn't solve the real problem. It's just doing central activity or just doing kinetic activity. Conrad doing charity, doing all kinds of worship on devas and things. This may bring some pious results. Sometimes it will be some type of Pujyas may reduce the sins, but it doesn't totally counteract it. So then Prabhupada was explaining the importance of Tapasya for spiritual advancement. He gives example that the hygienic life, you have a regular diet, you clean, you wash yourself, everything. You tend to be healthier. So the same way the spiritual life, a healthy spiritual life is a regulated life. So there are many sub principles that bring us to the point of Ka consciousness. They can help us to achieve Ka consciousness like Brahmacharya, posterity, cleanliness, yoga, asanas and so on. But these in themselves are not transcendental. The root transcendental principle is when we get the shelter or surrender or the guidance or mortified spiritual master. And then we practice Ka Consciousness under its guidance. When we get association with the pure devotees, we have two things. We have got more upright activities which are Helpful for spiritual life. You have actual transcendental activities, which is devotional service. Some people, they control their senses through these more witnessed activities. But then the senses are really powerful. They're like snakes that sometimes they can leap out and attack. Even great yogis or doing tapasya themselves without devotional service and sometimes no love. Where those devotional yogis, like Paridas Thakur, even Maya Devi came and approached him, but he didn't fall down, of course. He's a perfect devotee. So we have here this principle of controlling our senses through devotional service. Our tapasya is to engage our senses in ka service. So we're going to go through the different urges and the different types of sense controller. The principle is like that. The yogis, they control just by mainly abstinence, like fasting and austerities. Sometimes he says they should tolerate different urges of the senses. Tolerate heat. By the middle of the summer, in the month of May or June, sit with four fires on each side in the midday and meditate, tolerate the heat. And in the winter, when it's in the month of December, January, go to the Himalayas where it's zero minus zero degrees, and then go into the flowing water and sit in the water and meditate. That's their process to learn tolerance. That's not our process. I don't know how many people could do it. But our process is. Even they do that process, it's still a slap complete. It's like in atonement. It's a superficial dealing. They just learn tolerance, they learn detachment. Ultimately, the senses don't have any alternative. They haven't developed a higher taste in devotional service through engaging our senses in ka service. So we have a higher taste. So we develop a taste for serving ka. But we have to understand because sometimes, especially new people, they don't understand why we have to control our senses. Our children is something that educates the children because they don't know why they have to control the senses. Well, everybody, all the other teenage kids are having fun. Why do I have to. Why can't I go to parties? Why can't I eat a. Why can I do everything my senses are urging me to do like some other fields are doing? So if we want to progress in our spiritual life, then we need to have some sense control. The way we control our senses is by positively engaging them in ka service. But if we don't engage it, then we'll be in big trouble. So here, six different items of control have been mentioned. Vachal Vegam, the speech Manista Krona vegam the mind and anger. Jiva vegam the tongue, Uttarupashta vegam vigli and the genital. We got six. The speech, mind and anger on the one side and the tongue, belly and genital on the other. So regarding speech, Prabhupada is explaining there are two alternatives. One thing is. You talk nonsense. That's under the domain of Maya. We have all the energies. We have the spiritual energy which is called Ataranga Shakti. Maybe somebody can write it on the board. Ataranga Shakti who write many letters. We have a middle potency called and we have the Lord Bahiran Kashya. So who is the Rani? Anyone else? Lakshmi Rudini. So Rajshti mainly at Radharati and all her expansions. Then Tatasta Shakti. No, you got to put Tatasta in the middle. Tathasta meaning in the middle. Who qualifies for Tathasta Sati? Anybody here? Noah? Tathasta Sati. I want you to point to a Tathasta sati in this room. Everybody should be pointing to someone. All of you are to test the shirt. It's the Madhyaska or middle torrent Sikh which are the living entities. Shantivarana. Being a Bharti Shasti teacher isn't the only one really sure about who's the tattest of Shakti. Everyone else is looking around. Everyone's the tatasta sanctity. We're in the between. We're in the middle. Bahirami Shakti means Mahamaya. So put over the next. Entrayana Shakti. Rava Lakshmi, Tadasta Shakti, Jiva shakti. Bahiranga means external and Antaranga means internal. Internal potency, external potency. We're the middle potency. We're part in between. We are always under control of someone. We are not allowed to be independent. We have a choice. We can be under control of Ararani or Lakshmi. If we don't choose that automatically, we default and we get Mahamaya's control. So most people because they don't exercise their decision in this material world. We're on the Mahamaya. No. Because of Ka consciousness we have got the option. We can opt to be under Radharani and Mahshtri's protection would like to be under Harami. Would like to be under Harami's potential. Who would like to be under Mahavaya? Mahamaya loses the bone here today. Don't worry. She's ready. She's waiting outside. So here Subha Devi. She's the Anti Ranga Shakti, she's over mine also. She's the one who keeps us engaged in Krishna. Sexy one. And the Ranga Shakti does engage us in Krishna service. Under the shelter of Antaranna Shakti we'll always be engaged in Krishna's devotional service. And under the Bahi Ramya Shakti we're going to be engaged in the service of the senses and sense gratification. We're going to try to make us work hard to get a little sense gratification and then feel that somehow we're properly situated through evolution. So all these different senses are normally being engaged in Maya activities. But in Ka consciousness we have alternative activities. Sangesa. Just like we have our speech. So we have options of talking nonsense. Or we can talk Ka Consciousness, talk about Ka, talk about devotional service. Something in between. The yogis do Mona. They don't talk about anything. The problem says that's not really a viable alternative. Because I met one person, he was doing Mona. Then he's writing to the secretary. Please deposit all the donations in my bank account so and so and see that you know. So although they're not speaking, but they're writing and they're communicating. They're just not speaking. So we can also say the same thing. Chaitanya to ask and tell his treasure. Please deposit all the donations for the new temple and the paint. It's not Maya. He is doing it for Krishna. It's a devotional service. The same thing you can do for Krishna but it won't be Maya because it's connected. So we want to control our speech. Bacho legava doesn't mean we have to be lorna babas and not speak anything. It means we learn how to talk things which are critical. We talk about devotional service. Some people say, well, I have to work. I'm in my school, I'm in my work. Well, Lord Krishna in the Bible town says that for your maintenance, what work you have to do for your survival, that's never going to be a problem. Because you have to survive in order to eat in order to live. So for self preservation you're not foul for that. It's not a problem. Because you can also consider that as part of what your essential needs are. For devotional service you have to live in order to do the worshipful service. To live you have to have a house and food. You have to work if you're in the hospital. So therefore it's alright to talk in your business it's after hours. You're not Doing that people go to the pubs and the clubs and so on. And it is hot clock. So how to limit that? How to talk more about Krishna? How to what? We have to. We don't have to talk how. We can rather talk about Krishna. So we have the mind. What's the alternatives? With the mind you have think, right? So what do we think about the same alternative. Think about Maya, think about shoots gratification. Or think about think Krishna. Why Krishna purifies the mind. Why Krishna purifies the speech. Krishna Surya sama Maya Nakar jaha Krishna Maya nahiya nikar. Krishna is like the sun, Maya is like darkness. So wherever there's Krishna, then there's no darkness, no nations. Whenever we bring Krishna, whenever we connect Ka, then everything becomes transcendental. So we have also here the options of Maya thoughts, planning, how I am going to enjoy my sense gratification. Or we can be thinking how I can serve Krishna, how I going to make the money so I can go to the convention. How I going to make the money so I can make a donation for building the temple. How am I going to encourage my children to do Krishna Kachas? So many things you can think of. But you often are under devotional service or directly about Krishna, reading the Bible, time, evening time. In between you have keeping your mind in the vacuum. This is what the Buddhists or the yogis trying to do. Start all flaws. It's also very, very practical. I want everyone to stop thinking for one minute. Nobody can stop thinking. You're thinking about stopping actually in the Pranayama process, you actually do breathing exercise. You can stop thinking. You see between the thoughts, stop the thought process. Then you can realize the self. That's basically the mechanical process. It may take many lifetimes to actually master it. It's a very difficult process. It's not that easy to keep the mind blank unless you're a student right before the final exam. So we want to think about Ka instead. That's an easy way. So we have anger. The Prabhupada explains that it's not possible to give up anger totally. Then we have to be angry through the right cause normally people are angry with that sense gratification gets impeded. They have a concept. This is how things should be. This is who I am. This is what I want to enjoy. This is what I want to do. Something that's in the way that make it angry. So it's anger out of false ego or out of sense gratification of lust. But we can also be angry out of love, somebody offends Krishna offends a fear rewarding. Then we become angry. Don't speak all this concept says. So we can tolerate even insults to ourselves. Just like Rugana started criticizing Jaragbara Sehu when Jarabara was carrying the palanquin and he wasn't carrying properly because he was trying to avoid sharpening. So he wasn't marching. Instead the palanquin was jerking around. So the king started to chastise him and say, you fat soul, you stupid, you imbecile. And all kinds of, you know, derogatory terms to him that why you know, you don't even know how to listen to politics. And then J replied, well, I write him back. I said, I'm neither intelligent nor stupid. I'm neither this or that, because I'm not even this body, I'm a spirit soul. Suddenly the king realizes that I've got a pundit here or something. It's not just a normal sutra that's carrying my colleague and he stops and asks for forgiveness. Please tell me who you are. So Jair Bharat, because he was a self realized soul, he didn't get offended even when he was criticized. Even when he was humbly. For devotees, you don't expect to be criticized by other devotees. But sometimes it does happen. Due to our purified nature, we tend to criticize others and find fault. And if you're in the workplace or in the material world, it's quite expected. Sometimes, although depending on the work ethic of the place where you work, that you're trying to avoid. Sometimes you get tyrannical boxes with your colleagues who can be very nasty. Especially they think they're going to get the promotion before they will. Can be a very difficult situation. But for devotees, they can actually tolerate themselves for themselves. They want to react to it. They can decide they don't have to just succumb to urge. But Krishna is blessed in the hotel. If other devotees being criticized or attacked don't reply to that. So we can either be angry for Krishna or we can be angry for a Sanskrit. We have these two extremes and applying it anger correctly trying to stop anger altogether, which is very hard. And Prabhupada tried to stop being angry. And Guru they popped on his forehead. But to try to stop him, that's very difficult. So then come out somehow. Or we apply it for Maya, the speech might be introduced three things you have to control. Then we have the tongue, belly, genitals. So tongue and belly are connected to the belly. You can say the quantity and tongue is the quality the Delhi once more, the tongue is what. What goes in terms of our taste depending if we eat, if we overeat, especially if we eat tomasic things, that affects the adrenaline. So then we have here controlling a tongue. You can either say eat nothing, that's going to be a proper option. Or eat everything, whatever the tongue wants. Or eat prasad just to get different options. So then the Lord eats the recital and we'll eat posada rather than trying to eat anything that the time wants. Eating nothing start out of grace. Eating masala is the easy way to control our tongue. We go into more details and then control the quantity. That's done by Ushnu Wendy regulated times eat morning, no night practice routine. You do snacks and fruits in between. Then you can have a healthy body also. And you won't be too much inclined to overeat. One good thing is that when you listen to holy Dhaam like my output, there's no offense for overeating. Otherwise she'll overeat. Now the Romans that used to eat and they would go and violate it and eat more obviously. Extreme example of overeating. Until we have a genitals where we can have the extreme. Either practice is totally unregulated in sexual relations or to be celibate totally abstination. We don't die if we don't have sex. So it is an option for some people to be sounded. Most people, it's not a very agreeable abstinence. The other way is to have Krishna paths of children deregulated, unregulated abstinence and regulated. So this robot systematically we dissolve. If you see how it's presented and pretty much you can see that the options which are offered to us. We should take the Ka conscious option, which everybody here is doing. But when we materially identify, then we have an urge to speak, we have an urge to think. We have the mans of the body. These are the different urges are there. So it's not so difficult to control. It sounds very difficult in the beginning. Vajo, venga, musa venga. But when we have the means out of control, the speech and the mind and the anger and the different senses. It's not symmetrical. That's why I said these are considered in that families, basic beginners to learn these things. Sometimes devotees for years and years together they struggle because they haven't really made that decision that this is what I want to do. I want to control my senses by engaging them in Krishna service. I want to be under Radharani's protection alliance. Then we need to learn under the gaya, under the pure devotees, a little spiritual. It's exactly how we can engage our senses. Those are details how to do it with the principle of engaging them. That's the universal principle here. If we control our senses, then it's said to be auspicious. Then that's called the tapasvi, someone who practices austerities. And if we don't control our senses, we have uncontrolled virtues. It's inauspicious and then we become a bogey. There's many names for that type of person. Uncontrolled person or the all sub person is out of control. So the Prabhupada decided to give more details about the type of manslim speech. Mayavadi discussions, talking about Libyan philosophies, talking about fruited activities and talking about unrestricted sense gratification. All these different kind of things are in Ranson's speech. So what is the solution for Ransom's speech? Anyone have a suggestion here that the ladies have a suggestion? How can we cure this urge for nonsense speech? Talk about vision, anything else? Priests who are mission about speech. We talk about devotional service. So this is a solution. There's a problem and there's a solution. When we train people on this practical solution of the practical problems. If you see somebody talking about, well, his philosophies, we're talking about the Karma Khanda and all those things. It may seem very auspicious but it's not really auspicious because it's still part of the material world and that's keeping them bound. It's auspicious is when they start talking about ka Chandary ka talking about devotional service, different services for Krishna. So you want to avoid that sense speech. We want to engage in productive Krishna conscious of Krishna speech. The Prabhupada talked about the agitations of the flickering mind. He said there's two categories. Avirodha Preeti, unrestricted attachments and Viroda Yukta Grodha Anger arising from frustration. So the mind gets reattached to something. Could be anything, could be sports, could be music, could be different kinds of enjoyment, different kinds of things. So I just attach to those things. And then one gets angry when they don't get what they want. So the anger comes from this frustration because of the unbridled unrestricted attachments. What's the solution for that? That pronounce it verses 10 mind him Krishna consciousness, Krishna conscious thoughts. Think about Krishna, think about devotional service. Keep the mind engaged this. Only you can do only that. The world is themselves. Nobody else is. You know, there's no mind police. You have to be your own police of your own mind. And you have to think to see what your mind is thinking about. Blessed Bhakti Siddhan Saracetaka said the mind's thinking about nonsense. Then we have to scratch the mind. The mind morning with the pairs of shoes, a hundred times in the evening hundred times with broomstick. The mind should be our servant. We become the servant of the mind. Whatever the mind thinks, we think that's us. We need to conquer over that. And to rather engage the mind in what we want to think about. If we don't have all these things require desire, thinking, willing. We have to will. I want to control my speech. I want to control my mind. I want to control my bodily urgency. Why? Because I want to gain. The act of the process is a practical process how to do it. But if you don't make that initial decision that this is what I want to do, we're not going to be successful. Once you make that decision, then there's we get some mercy. We're able to progress. The prophet went into great detail saying that different kinds of food he had. But some people like this food of different tastes. Some people like food which is produced from seminar and blood. They play me thanks. All these things that onions and garlic are considered because they were born from blood. They were born from a dead animal. So they were produced from blood. So those food which are produced by seminar and blood in the mode of ignorance, that's one kind of food. But that food is not good for spiritual progress. And there's food like fruit, vegetables, grains, milk. These things are mode of goodness. But both of these two kinds of food in themselves are material goodness. And ignorant foods are mutated of rational. So then what we know as we can purify the food and the more the witness the offering to Krishna. We need only Prasadam. How can I explain here? Only Prasadam because it tastes good. That can just like going to post graduate study of this topic. You only eat the prasada because it tastes. But somebody gives. Oh, I don't like that. Then we're still mentally we have to change our mentality. We're still approaching everything only for taste. Prasadhi is good and we like prasad. It's not the only reason we need it. We just pray even if we don't criticize Prasada. Prophet said, if you offer palatable dishes to the deity with the intention of eating such nice Food we are involved in trying to satisfy the events of the time. If we accept the invitation of a rich man with acting as he recall from the food, we are also trying to satisfy the demands of the tongue. That doesn't mean we can't go to a rich man devotee's house, make prasad. That should be the only reason. It should be there. When I preach to the person or to engage him, preach to consciousness. Another. So the prophet, he used to go to people's homes and eat. He said that we're preaching just by eating. Because he said anyone for me to go to the house, they had to become a light member first. So in Africa became a light member. Then he went to the house and took prasads. So you don't do. It's a question. You can see here how you have to bring your mind and the senses and light. The mind is going to automatically. Even you have the right reason. You want to go to some place to do something. The mindful thing, just put a thought in. Just because the mind is going to chain up like this. We'll put in some kind of Maya thought you might want make a nice offering to Krishna. And then the mind may think, oh, that'll taste nice. You have to control the mind. You stop, don't think about it. This is for Krishna, not for you. So we have to control the mind. We get tested in different ways. So we have to always react to that. In the Bhagavad Gita Ka says lust is in our senses and in the mind and in intelligence. So we can see how the lust attacks the need to engage their mind. Accordingly, we have to use our intelligence and change the way we think about things, orient ourselves in the proper way. The prophet talked about the gender tells us that there's legal sex and there's illicit sex. And within married life there's legal sex and outside of married life and submissive sex and living within married life. This would be totally unrestricted. Babad explained how sex doesn't only mean the act, but it's thinking about it, planning, talking about it, having sexual intercourse and satisfying the genitals and artificial intelligence. So somebody even in the Non Vihasta Ashram may also be involved in some of these activities. So we have to dovetail our thinking in the proper way. Also for the discussion people are discussing about elicits that there's also a type of deviation. All these different categories, subtle to the gross or littles. So these things are basic, basic teachings in the Krishna conscious movement. But this is a very Scientific way. How we control our activities, why we do these different austerities in order to be Ka conscious. So the speech, the mind of anger, tongue, belly and genital. If we control it, then it's called Goswami. And if we don't control, they're controlling us, then what are we? Adan Hagovir Visitran Tamisram Puna Punaschar Vinda Char for those who have decided to continue their existence in this material world for the gratification of their senses, there is no chance of becoming Ka conscious. Not by personal endeavor, by instruction from others or by joint conferences. They are dragged by the unbridled senses into the darkest region of ignorance. And thus they madly engage in what is called chewing the chut. After hearing everything about Ka consciousness or somebody mismakes a decision that I would have continual access to the I want to be in Mahamaya and I want to do whatever my senses tell me. Well, those people aren't going to do Krishna conscious until they have a change of heart. Maybe when they get AIDS they change their mind about 10. It's something that we have to decide ourselves whether we want to remain in the nature of existence and sense gratification or whether we want to serve Krishna devotional service and return back to what we're now. This is the basic Krishna. We can go on to stand at a high vista, engage in the sense gratification and make significant advancement in our world, in our Ka consciousness. We have to make a definitive decision that we're learning to engage ourselves in Krishna service. We're going to do everything for a higher purpose. How to do the different activities that we have to do throughout our daily lives. Senior devotees to devotees can advise, spirituality can advise. If you make that decision, then we can progress very systematically in our devotional service. And Maya will always be there. She's waiting outside as soon as somebody wants to switch over under her shelter and just be such notifications. He's very assertive. So it's very easy to fall into that because it's. We've been doing it for millions of years to actually decide to want to be Ka conscious and to control our senses. The devotional service, as Prabhupada said, that's an act of war. We're declaring war on the take initiation, make vows to that effect. It's like a real formal declaration of what. So this is not this nature of instruction. These are important to go through that's very systematic. Vedic Almighty explain it. Because whether it applies to us personally or in our Own preaching how we want to explain this to other people. We can understand how to help ourselves and how to help others to be Ka conscious and why we need to engage the thoughts, words and deeds. Speech, mind, anger, tongue, belly, genital service if we want to develop the higher truth of Ka consciousness. Any questions? Central activity. Then we do devotional service and go back to do central activity. Is that atonement? Well, there's atonements given in the Vedas. For instance, you tell a lie, so then you fast for one day or whatever. There may be different kinds of atonements to counteract things. People do so many central activities now that I think people don't even know what they thought. That used to be popular. That kind of. That's a different. Someone may also change the holy name as a kind of utopian without the idea of being purified. But then if they chant and they sin with the idea that I'm going to chant later and get forgiven for, then it becomes a 7 defense to the holy being. If somebody somehow or another gets involved in some sinful activity, they chant Hare Krishna, they get purified. Later on, again they fall down or again they make a mistake and they do it with sin. They continue chanting and trying to get out of it. That's not exactly atonement. It's considered purification. Because eventually they get purified from that desire committing those sins. Atonement. This means counteracting the karma without purification. When you do devotional service, you're also atoning for the sin. But in a higher sense you're actually purifying yourself. We should try to avoid committing sin. There's another point that Prabhupada is making here that we shouldn't just go on doing sin and chanting. But then someone might say, well, I can't stop sinning, so I can also stop chanting. Then it's better to chant. It's better to be offensive chanter than not chant at all. Because at least eventually they'll get purified. But if we want to make progress, we should rather transform our activities into devotional service. Do the activities which are devotional service. Don't do that. Don't listen. There's a verse of Chaitanya Cheramida. Don't. Don't do any sinful activity and don't do any pious activity. Just serve Radha and Krishna. Some people stop their devotional service. There was one Sannyasi disabled Bhakti Nanda service and he wanted to circumambulate the Ganges. Tremendous pious activity. We walked around the entire Ganges from the Himalayas down to the ocean. Swim over the mouth, go by boat, walk up one side and walk down the other. Must be the 5,000 coming. But his guru told him, no, you shouldn't be there. Preach Ka consciousness. But he did it anyway. He was attached to this idea of doing this pious activity. So when he came back and he said I've done it. Then the guru told him not to take off your Sanyasi water. And he walk you back to a Ramacharya. I want you to watch the pals for the tour. So for devotee a dupious activity, giving up devotional service is a kind of remediation. You have to understand the difference between just the pious activity and devotional service. Devotional service, something much higher. I said that you ordered me to stay in Myanpur. Now I like staying in Myanpur. Now I'm feeling very happy saying my Ephrat Lev. There's something wrong with it. He said, you're lucky. You're fortunate. The Guru has asked you to do something and you have to like doing it. But the guru asks you to do something differently. You may not like doing. You have to do it also. Sometimes a guru may ask you to do something and they turn out that you like doing it. I went to the stupid group some I want you to do this service. I want you to have a child with Krishna. You may like doing that. Someone may not mind. But we do it because it's our devotional service. Not because we like it and don't like it. If we stop doing it because we like doing it, that would also be mine. Some people, they think I have to suffer. You do it not because we like it or we don't like it. But you do it because Krishna or guru wants us to do. If you're doing it for that reason, that's your devotional service. Now if you're a devotional service, you should like it. You should get a taste. It's good. It's not. But we can mix up that taste with other material happiness. That sometimes the guru may ask us when we have to do something and we think oh, I don't like doing that. So now maybe I shouldn't do it. Actually the emotional soundness make it happen. Otherwise while we're doing it, we can't avoid that. That's a good sign. That means you're already trying to taste to some degree. Everybody in Ka consciousness is doing it because they like doing it. I mean we are everyone but most people because what Chaitanya is so merciful. He gives us a taste very quickly by chanting, by serving the get this taste. Otherwise it'll be very hard to do and tell you that you don't get any taste. Then we had to also purify our consciousness that we want to do the service to please Krishna. Because sometimes we can get misled. Some people, they are told, well, you get a very good taste if you just talk about Radha and Krishna to the best things. Then we are approaching the whole issue to enjoy those best things rather than serving. Maybe Krishna wants us to preach his glory to the conditioned souls and we shouldn't publicly talk about his intimate past tense because neo primaries might start thinking about it in a different way and commit some offenses. So if we do things which the guru didn't ask us just because we want to enjoy a taste and devotional service, then that can be a kind of a deviation. But if we're doing what Guru and Krishna wants us to do, at the same time we're feeling happiness if everything's in order, if we're doing what Krishna doesn't want us to do because we want to be happy in Krishna consciousness, that's the problem. Pretend devotees not mature in the realization. It's not that a neonite devotee gives 100% protection. The devotees we're talking about perfected lobbies versus perfected devoid, not a perfected yogi versus a new friend Guru. So devotees also, if they're careless and they can live by Ro, they can lose the projection of Ka. Also. There are different societies, the days for us, it's like, you know, entry point. But then in the actual application of it, there's so many other details that one has to be cautious about. The Bible general passage which mentioned the different anarchists and obstacles. So we're going to discuss that that comes next. Now, once we decide, yes, I want to engage in devotional service, we make that decision. Okay, then what's favorable for devotional service? What's unfavorable and what's favorable? Those are the next two verses. I think it's kind of the way that Mukher Isaiah is presenting it. It's just like very foolproof way. First of all, make your decision that you're going to engage in devotional service. You want to take the effort of controlling the senses. Then next thing, how to do that, what's negative for that and what's positive. If you don't make the first decision, only don't have. It's like, you know, you're programming. So let you do step one and go to the next step. If you don't do the first step, the second step doesn't even apply. Don't talk about what's favorable, unfavorable for the emotional service of the animation a decision to do emotional service. But if somebody is protected into emotional service, then they have to even someone who might be quite advanced and they have a lot a high degree of protection. I mean it's amazing like I was seeing that the Rollies pitching at Woodstock. This is places different environments which are very simple environments. People are doing all kinds of simple activities. The Volis, they're not agitated when they're doing and they're just giving out the Saddam, the Buddhist and preaching to all these people who are trying their level best to gratify their senses. We're trying our level best not to wake them up from their sleep when they don't want to be woken up. And so you see now the Lord is even they may not be ready. The senior the Lord is. But there could be a surviving test of life. But that's why we need to follow also. Otherwise we can follow the guidelines like not to lead a bad association. Second verse gives us six spoilers. We discuss tomorrow Bhakti and Ashtraji. What can destroy Bhakti? Okay, you grant Bhakti. Now you decide to serve Krishna. What are the six spoilers then after that what are the six protectors facilitators for our party. So we want to avoid the spoilers. So if people don't avoid the spoilers. The demon thought that maybe he's going to devotional service may fall into difficulty. And if they are careful then they get protected by Krishna. Even though they may be relatively in the open. Even the Bhagavatam talks about Priya Rata Maharaj when they're trying to convince him that he should be married. They explained to him how she was worried if I get married and he fall into Maya and May they were saying that no, you have a Krishna conscious wife and you're in a Krishna conscious marriage is actually the fortress. You'll be more protected if you're all alone. Then Maya can attack you alone. If you're in a Krishna conscious household situation doing everything in devotional service, you're being protected. So they're convincing Veer Ratan that he has to leave his mama Charlie and they have married is supposed to be a king. The kings had to deny one Sudha who made Babhan. He was worried about giving into all that. Convincing him that he can be Krishna conscious and he can be made all the Maya. So the idea is we have a different way of controlling the senses. The Bhagava Purana talks about Gigati Maharaj where he got his whole kingdom engaged in chanting Hare Krishna and worshipping Krishna and Satya Yuga. As a result, nobody died for three generations because Satya Yuga was so pure that because everyone was chanting, nobody was dying. Since nobody was dying in Yamaloka, all the Yamadutas were just sitting around like firemen when there's no fire. Indrathi went down there and you saw, you know, and then they all started to chastise what's going on here because the Idachi, we're not getting any customers, we're just sitting here. What's the use of making guys come and do that? Nobody dying anymore. You know, they started saying, you know, Indra and Indra he thought he could be like an ego thing that what is this real life? I mean, what Nayati Maharaj thing is doing? He can't just change the whole universal order just, you know, just like that. So then he ordered, I want you to go down and make Igatima Raj slow down. And then Kavale went and after he came back and he said, you know, I couldn't do anything. He's a happily married man. He's regulated in his ex wife. He's chanting Hare Krishna and he's completely emotional through. I couldn't get into her sound like this blow me alone. Some days I can sit up. And then Indra lost his camper and said look at that, I want you to do something. So then there a whole history of Eileen and this Hinda really chastised and said I don't care what it takes, what it must be from. So the entire universe of Devas are the poor Yativas. He does know that all the Devas, all the outside, everybody, they're all completely ganging up on us how to make this guy's devotional service. So they couldn't do anything and still they couldn't do it. So then finally Kalumudev made a plot. He said I techniques here is to. Well, this is my friend and to make a long story short, he made a drama party completely comprised of Devas who entered into the Earth planet looking like human beings. And they performed perfect Vaishnava Brahma until they got the confidence of the king. And he watched them several times and he was at ease. And he made them like the royal Nava party and everything. And then one day finally the Kar told everyone. Okay, here's our chance. We got his confidence this time. We're going to commit a Krishna apparat. We're going to commit an apparat during the drama. The king is watching and he sees the Akbar from that moment when he's partying the Akbar see that we're going to commit purposely. And Abara when he saw the Akbara at that moment, until he prays in his mind. And Krishna, forgive me for this, Aharon. He'll be without protection. The shield of Krishna's protection will be away from him. At that moment. He got about figured out three seconds, whatever it is, before he makes Krishna. I'm going to hear them with every whammy night all might arrows lust at that moment, the upstar on the stage has to expose herself to the king at that crucial moment. This way. Then right after that, everybody run for it. This was his plan. Years he was only a linger and. But they lived what the kingdom. The king just had a bad thought. And then he was all this for three generations. He was like so old. But he never got old. He was like a young man. So he got like aged. Because one bad thought came in his mind. And with all the effort, one bad thought came. And then they all had to run. And then he would get back to injuries. That's all you could do after so many years. Funny way we should work in progress. We got a dysfunction. We got now eight old men. I mean, it goes on like this. So I mean, it's like there's a tremendous protection you get for devotional service. You can't have a distance, right? But if you have the entire devas and everyone against you might be tough. And it happens sometimes. Sometimes the devas get ends. So we really have to be under the, you know, surrender the Krishna. Assuming that no matter, everybody's against you. That's from Soldier. But even if they're against you by Krishna's message, eventually. All these best names are in the Bible. Interesting.
