Jaya Pataka Swami describes three small-group formats for devotee care: house programs, Bhakti-vriksha discussion groups, and counselor groups. He cites examples like a Bengali attendee who stopped eating fish after joining a group, and notes that ISKCON distributed roughly 92,000 Bhagavad Gitas during recent festivals and seminars.
Questions this video answers
"450 nabhatas; about 72 Bhakti rickshaws; and 3030 ... families" (verbatim from transcript).
"Almost 92,000 Bhagwan Gitas" (transcript statement).
The 500th anniversary (500 years since Lord Chaitanya’s initiation/start of Sankirtan movement).
"311 trillion" (number cited in the transcript).
Number one congregational unit in the world right now is still Vayanapur because they have 450 nabhatas and about 72 Bharti rickshaws and 3030 ka conscious families. The number two position is 97 Bhakti Vrikshas and 24 Mahata Gurus. They didn't send. I don't know if they send a scoring for how many passengers they have to be. Number three position is not like the psycho number. It's about 45 bhakti mirshas and 30 counselor groups of Pune and a lot of student programs. Thousands. A lot of student programs. So there's no reason why Guru Raman Revi shouldn't be in the top 10, if not the top five, even if this to all the devotees like this. This is a nav hatha, kind of. According to the Congregation for Preaching newsletter, you get one point for each person that's here. There must be so many programs like this going out. If anybody bothered, keep track of it. If you have a regular mat that we get automatically, what's it, eight points each. And Mahkovich, you get 12 points. It comes through 10 points square every time they meet. Plus the total number of people.
Grew up.
It's something we started at the time of Prabhupada Centennial, 1996. It's actually. So it's almost nine years now, maybe 95. That what it is is there are small groups of devotees, like in Avhadas, you have a kirtan, you have a lecture, you have an art team, then you have some prashada, and then you question and answer. So most of the work is done by the organizers. The shrank. You did the cooking, you did the heating work.
To cook.
They clean up the house afterwards. So a lot of effort goes by the organizers. So we consider it more. It's a pork form of reaching. But it doesn't give us much involvement to the people. In a sense, not everybody gets a chance to share or speak or whatever. The Bhakti Misha group, you have smaller groups anywhere, say from eight to 15 people that meet everyone. And then they. Instead of having a long lecture, they will have. They'll have a short reading from Prabhupada's books. Or maybe they'll discuss a lecture that happened recently in a temple or meeting. They'll discuss that in a systematic way. There's a system, how they discuss it with discovery, understanding, and then application. Then everybody in the group will get a chance to share with how the particular teachings of that meeting somehow Applied to them how they want to apply that teaching or how it already applies. Maybe they heard such instruction from their spiritual master, from another lecturer, Prabhupada, or that touched their heart in a very deep way. Or they got some kind of a realization, or they were inspired that from that particular instruction, they want to apply it in their own lives, change their life. There was one lady, it was Bengali. And Bengalis have a lot of water. Kind of like Florida has a lot of water. Bengalis have a lot of water. It's very rainy stuff. So most Bengalis eat fish. In fact, it's easier to get them to give up meat than it is to get them to give up fish. We have a program that will become four rounds vegetarian. Well, four rounds and no meat. They put one at a loose stage. At least get them to stop eating the meat, but then to get them to stop fish, that's like another step. So it's just a culture, just like people. Everybody eats it there. So it's, like, difficult for them sometimes to give that up as they're brought up. Some families are. Most of them really give sand. So then she had heard so many lectures, so many lectures about vegetarianism. Somehow it was always, like, went over her head later, not now, not the one training. She went to a bhakti, vriksha group. Bhakti means devotion, and vriksha means the tree. So it's a tree of devotion. It's growing. So they happen to be discussing, you know, the picture in the Bible, Gideon, where the lady turns to a tiger. And from their karma, you are what you do, you become what you do now. So in the discussion, it came out that if you are habituated to eating fish, then you may be like a cat. Cats like tigers, cats like fish. So probably in your next language, you'll become a cat because of the small group. I mean, everybody has to speak on the subject. You couldn't just, like, dodge into the big group. You know, you can say, well, it's not me. The small group. Somehow it really touched her, and she had to think about it. And they asked, what do you think? I mean, not to put her on the spot. They didn't know her particular unique situation. She said, well, I have to confess that I eat fish and I'm attached to fish, but I really don't want to become a cat. This is the bottom line, that you may have to become a cat for eating fish. And from today on, I promise, no more fish. That's the kind of dynamic you get. It's a Small group. They discuss the topic. They try to work as a little and then they discuss also how to do preaching together. They have some mentorship in the group. The older devotees help the younger 1. Teach one, teach one. There's a lot of dynamics. So those groups are also a way of taking care. As long as we're on it. There's another kind of group, what's called the counselor group. It's also a very quite nice group that's a little bit different that's created by Chaupati Temple. Their system is that you have a senior devotee, someone that he becomes a counselor for many counselees. So again you have to have a senior devotee. When people have to agree that I want him to be. To be my counselor. Then they meet about once in every two weeks. They get reports on each of the devotees spiritual progress, how many rounds they did, how many aartis they attended, what sadhana. They have everything. So if you're part of a counselor group, you're getting a lot of supervision and care. Sometimes they meet every week. Sometimes every two weeks you turn in a report and you're signing a report. So that's now some of the bhakti rickshaw groups being inspired by that example. For the devotees who are chanting 16 rounds and doing more chanting, they also have this report system. Saba hybrid. We got the hybrid bhakhiviksha group of the counselor group. Overface. Overface. So anyway, these are the three kinds of groups we have. In the future we may have more. We don't know. We're always heard of any other kind of groups out there that might be applicable for iskcon. Tell me. I'm always. Or any other kind of technique for the Christians or the Jews or the Muslim or anybody else using for it. We're always interested in observing.
In a.
Community so large as this community. I've got a lot of senior devotees maybe need a unique system there. But the senior devotees would take the sacrifice of helping the younger devotees. Unless you have smaller kind of groups, it's very hard to know like to help people even. This is a very big group. There must be 70 people here. I don't know, 75, 80. So like not everybody probably in the room knows everybody else. There may be a lot of people you're familiar with, some people you're close with. So a very big group. We call this a large group, not necessarily a big group, but a large group. And people would tend not to want to open up with people they don't know where in a Small group, we get to know everybody. You can open up more and you can be more in yourself. So the smaller groups tend to allow you to take care of the devotees better. A big group like this means you're going to have a sannyasi or some senior devotee coming giving a lecture. There's something that's more inspirational. You need this kind of thing also. You need this type of gathering. And then you have like manslaughter gatherings where you have like jamastami or Rastami or something or Purima where hundreds and maybe thousands of people gather together. Mayak where hundreds of thousands. Then it's another kind of upliftment. It's like over the Richter scale. But he can't do that every day. That happens once in some period of time. Of course, in my opinion happens almost every month. That should take place. This went back for the Narsinga Chhatra. Dustin. Oh, I forgot. I wanted to tell that is Sarvashaka here?
Yes.
Just listen to this. There is one thing I wanted to tell Prana. What? I forgot. Don't you just stay with me. All right? Yes, I can hear you. For the Narsinga Chatur Dasa, they distribute hundreds of sets of vagutas every year. Almost 92,000 Bhagwan Gitas. So they offer for everyone who gets a Bhagwad Gita to be a Bhagwad Gita club member. For everybody who gets a Bhagwatum set and become a Bhagwatang club member. You get certain benefits from it. It's like giving free. Just sign up. Doesn't cost you anything. One thing is that during the year they have occasional seminars for the members of Abu Gita club or members of Agrichem Club and Mayapur. You can go and stay there for a very reduced rate. Something like for five days. Food, room, everything. $10, 500 rupees, something like that. 4 or 500. Even cheap for the. Even cheap for the Go to Mayapur and stay for four days in a nice guest house. So what happened? I went there and there was about. I don't know exactly, something like 600 to 800 members of the. This time they did a joint Bhagavad Gita and Raigava Thumb club for four day seminars plus Chaturbasi. So I was giving one class a day Bhakti Bhusha taught me writing some of these two classes to them different other people in Janani Bahaski home worship seminar how to practice Bhakti. And most of these People, they all bought Japa malas and started chanting. If the BBT has something like this through the Internet where they offer a kind of membership at least to those who get set. I don't know if you want to do it with the Bhagavad Gita, but they offer another thing for the people, buy them Bhagavad Gita is they give them a mail order Bhagavad Gita course which they develop in Bengali. And so they have at least two or three levels of the course. Preliminary, two or three beginning and advance. But these people, some of these people are lawyers, doctors, very, very educated people. And they're so much grateful because they said we don't have time to study the Shastra. We have nobody to guide us to anything. Most people, you know, in the scripture, they speculate, say all kinds of stuff. So here, very systematic, week by week they send a lesson. By mail or by Internet, they take it. Maki Purushatam swam. That's the credit for these two. I just thought that I was going to tell Dernika when she was saying so recently that Yadav, you can mention these two things and you get the information regarding Swami. It was really something that could be very good with Bhagavata. But I was so inspired to go and see a thousand people almost with their families, over a thousand people there to hear the Bhagavatam, to hear Bhagavad Git, hear all about the food that are coming. They're paying to go there, any dismality. But okay, they're very here to hear. And when they had the question and answer session, they give stacks of questions. There's so many questions we can never finish. All the questions that they had in the night in the training of two hours that was allotted to furnishing there. Apart from that, there was other. There was 5,000 people there furnishing. It was like another guard prayer. Nata was having a festival at the same time. They had 3,500 people, had about a thousand with the families. More than that. Then other people, other devotees from around India, everywhere they came. It was even Bhaktar Rupesh came to see what it was like. So with such an amazing energy there. The Mayapur has this kind of festival throughout the year that you know the month of Damadar is a hundred times more than the normal month for preaching. For anything you do. For this month where Narasinga Chandra does is called Vaishat. It's also hundred time bonus month. Most devotees are over it's not only It's a hundred bone like Dhammada is mainly for bhakti and Vaishak is for bhakti and also good karma. So the karamis are more into my sacrifice than they're into Dhammada because it works. But it also says anything you do good puts included for spiritual things get 100 times better. It said that Fatima Quran. It's also mentioned in the Harivaki Duas. Three main ones are there Vaishak, Namadar and Mag. Mag. A little less than the other two, but that's also special. Then of course, among the holy days, I was in the room with Vrindavan when Satchinanda was the Jai Satchin Nandava. There was Jai Sachin. Linda. Sanskrit scholars. Sanskrit scholars. He was trying to do the Satsang Dharmas which Gopi Prijana did. The Prabhupada told him, you're not ready to do it yet. It's very high Sanskrit. Your Sanskrit is basic. You should do the Vishnu Para and the Padmapura. This is very simple Sanskrit. And this is given by our devotees. I want them to read these things also. So I heard Prabhupada say that to him. I don't think they would do this. Prophet wanted us to know what most of the observances of all the holy days are mentioned in the Prophet. Just like it mentioned during the glories of Vishnu Tilak. If you see somebody wearing Mishtafila when you're purified, it has all this chapter by chapter. The glories of all the Akadasis and all the holy ghosts and all the holy places. It says Ramastami. Observing Ramastami is like equal to. I Forget. It's either 50,000 or 100,000 regardless of.
No, no.
But this Saturday is near job. So better to go to Raptor.
Actually.
I didn't was there. But Prabhupada did push him was an option anyway. This universe is creating, annihilating from us its whole lifetime. Hundred years. But Lord Caitanya, this came 500 years ago. This is the 500th anniversary of Lord Caitani was taking initiation. He went to Gaya to do Pindit where his father Ben Yeshrav hui got initiated 500 years ago started the whole Sankirta movement went back. We figured that it took maybe a year to get everything off there. So symbolically, next year would be the 500th anniversary of the starting of the Sankirta movement. That's why we want to have a really big festival of Maya for providing all the Sankirta and devotees, anyone who is a Buddhist, they said they'll give them free room and everything. I know how they're going to pull it off. Who wasn't the one that you do.
Everyone who was or who is the.
Way you work them. But they want to have a big reunion of all the preaching devotees and heaven, also congregational preachers and have them share their preaching realizations. This year there was Prabhupada pastimes. That was nice hearing everybody talk about Srila Prabhupada, the different experiences that they had with Srila Prabhupada. I get pulled away different things. But whatever I could hear was pure nakhta. 4 days continuously hearing about Prabhupada. So this year it's going to be Sankirtan stories. Prabhupada and Sankirtan stories. The next year, four or five years. That should also be pretty ecstatic. Maybe by then we can have it live on the Internet. I heard they just got broadband as my iPhone. I don't know how broad it is, but we call it broadband and the Romero broadband. The thing is, I was just inspired and there's such a wonderful community here. Probably I should repeat this, but there's really such a scope for it to be in the really top levels of congregational development just by everybody being active, sacrificing a little bit of a time, just like Kanipamu and strapping him today. And I sacrifice, invited us all here and fed us up to our next. Give everybody a nice association. Remember the Chaitanya Chernamita? Prabhupada says that Advaita Cherry used to do these kind of programs and said that he wanted all of his vihastas to do that, that they should occasionally hold programs on their house. Discuss about what he did. Srimad Bhagavad. And then they should distribute some prasada for their capacity, make it spiritual. Their house is kind of a spiritual center. This is a way of purifying the house. Also. They have that here purifies. All of us associate together. So this is something that many devotees can do either Navhata or Mahatrisha. I know that, Swamiya. How's the program? Not so good right now. Maybe we're going to start something and go in. I went this year to the new Vrindavan meeting of the temple presidents in North America. They invited me. So I went just as a minister to see what was happening. I showed them my report for the year. They liked it a lot. They were inspired. But I said before we thought that America was like a bit of a hard knot to get them to apply some of the new ideas. But then I was promptly corrected by Ramapha Maharaj. Maharaj, you are living in the past. Now America is on the cutting edge if they believe in God. Bhakti bhiksha groups in so many temples around America. 12 in Canada. He started seeing how many they had in Chicago and Toronto and Montreal and different places all over America. I don't think a lecture should be left behind. Incorrectivity instead of things are really expanding. Maybe for the Lord. Maybe here the counselor group works. There are many senior devotees. Some can say now who's willing to be a counselor? And let other devotees agree that such as them meet in their groups. They get together. That's one way of doing it. People like Bhakti Vic should get together and have Pune. They have all these 45 Bhakti Mikshagu that they find for the students, the young people. They like the interactive discussions and the more kind of lively kind of involvement. Then you have a naomhatra as a kind of not any big responsibility. You have a bhaku miksha. You should be there every week. Pastor group. You got to be there every two weeks or so. Ram Hud. Sometimes you have a program. People come to house programs and some rotation. In Halala Lumpur they use all the three systems. For the bhaktas and for the initiated devotees they have the counselor groups. For the general congregation they have namahathas. And for some, for the Chinese and some younger people, they do the bhakti richi Bhakti vriksha. That's taken off the Kuala for them. Today they do just the vaiti rickshaw. They have about 75 rickshaw. So what I'm saying it's a flexible thing. You do whichever you want. The idea is that those who need their care and guidance, they should get it and those who are able to give it. And that's a nice reciprocation. Probably happening informally. Can we formalize reading, discussion? Study groups is another kind of group also Study groups? Yes.
Sometimes when we do kabajan groups is we'll do abhajan and then we'll read something short in between. Then we'll go to the next bhajan and then read something in between.
You ever discuss it? Mostly bhajas. We could discuss the bhaja.
Sometimes we discuss Bodahari. Dasar was very good at discussing the bhajans, particularly the Bengali songs of the Vaishnava Acharyas. He'll explore the word for word meaning experience.
Everybody shares their experience, shares their understanding. Shares what? Their application. By sharing you get more realization. You're forced to think, I have to say something that I have to think about.
The other thing about our budget programs that we have is.
That's also nice. LA has mainly bicycled. He goes every weekend to different people's homes. And they have three hours intensive girta.
We try to make them so that everybody leads, everybody participates. It's not. You just have like one or two big stars. Everybody gets involved and leads a bhajan. The result is you have all these new people coming up who are developing their abilities.
Yeah, that's true. It's another kind of group, Bhajan group. Everybody gets the opportunity. That's probably Lord Chaitanya's original group was.
And then the result, the side effect is you have devotees like pr, they're such wonderful Vaishnavas. They spend hours and hours learning new melodies for chanting. And then they get excited because the bhajan meeting is coming up and they'll introduce them and everybody will be in ecstasy. Also.
Walk a little bit closer with the sun.
You're spying out there. You were just attracted by the beautiful song of okay, maybe we have to make it my girltime. What do you call it? It's not a kirtan rickshaw, kirtan mandali, bhajan, something. Tell me later. But like this, the more we can get everybody involved. That's the secret to stay active in Ka consciousness. If we're not involved, whether it's study groups or kirtan groups or classes or just attending the folks attending the temple programs, it's very important, especially people living in their homes, that everybody be part of some active kinds of devotional service and interaction and association. Because the devotee association is so purified. It's so important that we have that we're able to share a little bit. It helps us so much in so many different ways. Time is running very fast. This prabhupada says that if you're Ka conscious, we can go back to Ka in this lifetime. We think that normally to get back you have to wait till the end of Brahma's life. 1000 yugas is one day. Then you multiply that by the 12 months and the 3. Was it 100 years? You get how many? 311 trillion. 311 trillion. 311 trillion is his life. Then at the end of his life, if he happened to be at that time in the Satya Loka or maybe nearby Kapaloka or something, right? Maybe you can get up to Satya Loka in time and get back to Gnanya. You can. Just a short lifetime, Just a short time, a year, which is not even like a Brahma's blink would be. You know, that we'd already be finished, probably. And we can get back to Ka directly by taking active part in Chaitanya Mahaput. We can join in Krishna's fast. Thanks. What an opportunity. I mean, if there's one thing you don't want to blow, this is what we don't want to miss out on. I was thinking like how I mean, all respect, when you go drive by and it says, take shelter in Jesus Christ and He will save you. What their salvation is, what it means for death. I don't know exactly the definition, how it fits in our definitions. But that's okay. That I will respect for that. But just objectively, Lord Chaitanya, what mercy he is giving. There should be a sign on the road. Take shelter, Lord Chaitanya, and He will save you. People need that. People need to hear the messages. And how merciful, Lord. Maybe he says, I want some scholar in me. And said, Jesus as the second coming. He'll be back. Lily was rebuking, watching, which is an angel. Of course, Prophet never really endorsed it. He just mentioned it that this scholar says that I mean Jesus, the son of God, works in time as God himself. What was the exact prediction that Jesus said, I will become. Because like in Caitanya Bhagavad. What Caitanya said, I come back in two forms. So you get all kinds of people claiming that they're the second coming of Voit Chaitanya. But then if you read what did Voit Chaitanya say the next verse, he says how he's coming back. He says, I'll be back in two forms. I'll be with you even after I leave in two forms. He said, one of them is Vigraha Abhimani. What was the other one? And the other form he said will be in the form of the Harinath Kirtan. Feel the presence of Oshatana. So Moshe Tanya. He said he come back in true form. One of his, the Eden form. The other one is the Holy Name form. So this is the thing. I don't know what the quote is about Jesus coming back. So I'm not qualified to comment on how they'd interpret. What do they mean? Someone who's a comparative religion can study. It's interesting. As Helena, we can get away with saying so many things. The point is, Lord Caitani is so merciful. I don't want to in any way say anything negative about anybody else's mercy, but just positive. He's so merciful that people. If other people are rejoicing about whatever mercy they're getting. But the mercy that you get from watching Tamiya is so great. Everybody should be taking advantage of that mercy. We have such a good message to give people. Message of love. He's giving love, okay? He's not giving only salvation. Even devotees salvation. I don't want salvation. So many of like Sridhar, he refused salvation. It was offered to him. He said I don't want that. So finally he got love for God Him. That is the greatest warning. Salvation. Watch. Itanya is giving love.
He said nobody can explain the highest love form, the last limit of Bhakti without Krishna himself. So there is no question of comparison, his son or others. Only Krishna can do that. So in that case, Mahu is the only one.
I already said.
I'm saying that there's a famous song by Bhasada Bros that if Mahaprabhu would not come, who would give the last limit of Bhakti? Nobody could do that. Even a pure devotee cannot give it. Only Ka himself can keep the Radha's love, the highest form of love. So Ka came down himself as a Mahprabhu and distributed that. See, if Mahaprabhu would not come, there is no question of last limit of bhakti or the highest form of bhakti. Anybody could ever.
One thing everybody likes around the world is love. Everybody doesn't like love. Most people like love. I mean the good people all like love. They may have their definitions of love. In principle, they allow like love.
Those.
Who aren't totally burnt out and more Tamil doom that are already doing beyond. And Wo Chitan is giving everybody love. You should be the most popular person on the planet. Who else is giving everybody love unconditionally? I mean burning your sins off, that's nice. Gurus do that. Jesus did that. That's nice. But giving love, that's even better. Yellow seniority seems so inconceivable that Brahma lived such a long time. And we're part of the creation here. But did you say that Brahma is only 28 days old? No, this is the 28th cycle. In this day of Brahma, Yuga cycle. Yuga cycle. Out of the thousand Yuga cycle, this was the 27th. Krishna comes like clockwork.
71 makes each manus out of 14 manus.
So we're still in the first one. It's like 11.
Close to noon time.
Not noon at all. Not noon. There's a thousand yugas for his one day. So 50500 yugas will be noon, right? This is only 27. So that's like 20. That's 2%, 2.7. It's not that good.
No. But the Manu 71 Chaturangi.
That'S right. There's 14 Manus and one day of Brahma. 72 times 14 is a thousand. So this is the 70, this is 27 which falls in the first Manvalhara. So it's like it's just sunrise. This is the twilight zone of the twilight area. The first of the day of Brahma. 27th Kali Yuga just started. The rest of the day of Brahma Krishna Council should be there somewhere.
My dad did the mathematics on, you know, Brahma's day or his lifetime first. What he did is he divided his day by 24. So then I'd give one hour of his time. That was like so many billion. 4 billion or something. So then he divided that by 60. To get his hours we had to.
Divide it by 12. Because this 4 billion is only the 12 hour data.
Oh yeah. Then divide it by 2. Then divided that by 60. So that gave 1 minute. Then he divided that by 60 and got 1 second and that turned out to exactly 100,000 years. And so then you take our lifetime, that's only 1/100,000th of his second. So then you think about it. It's like unbelievably insignificant or 1000th of his second. Less than 100 thousands of a century. A hundred years would be a thousandth of a second. Most people don't even live for 100 years, so it's less than 10,000ths of a second.
Robert was once on the roof of the Mayapur building where I bulldozed building. He was walking around. There was like a whole caravan of ants carrying their eggs from one the roof garden there. So if you want farther than the roof guards or look down at them, we're all looking. So just as we look down at these insects, these ants, think how insignificant they are. They only live for a few days like that. There are higher entities on higher planets. Look down at the human beings and think what insignificant entities they are. They only live for few days. According to the celestial planets, our six months is there one day. Our one year is there one day and night. So that means that we live 70 years. It's like two months. So on our planet. Which animals live two months? Some kind of rodent, probably not even a bird. Cockroach probably lives longer than someone who study this. Okay, thank you all very much. Sorry, maybe we went too late. Thank you. Thank you for watching our videos.
