Jayapataka Swami and a co-speaker explore Shantarasa, the contemplative mood in devotional practice, using texts like Bhakti Rasamrita Sindhu and examples from Hanuman's service to Rama. They describe its signs: detachment, focused gaze, indifference to material life. The talk ends with Q&A on gurus and personal spiritual experience.
Chapters
Personal realization of Brahma Jyoti much more.
Blissful than the impersonal realization of the Brahma Jyoti.
So. Converted to devotees.
First they were converted to devotees.
In Shantarasa Sandarasa. Dasharasa means that also includes Sahanarasa.
Dashirasa means it also includes Shantarasa.
But they want to do service.
But they want to do service.
Like Hanuman. Like Hanuman he wants to service to Lord Ram.
He wants to do service to Lord Ram.
Yes. Why does Sita Devi were comfortable on her forehead?
So he asked Sita Devi, why?
Why does she?
Why does she.
Oh yes.
So Sita Devi has kum kum in a forehead. And someone told him it pleases Lord Ram.
So there's a prime of Hanuman he over his whole body of Khunk.
So there's a form of Hanuman where his whole body is covered with kumkum.
If he pleases the Ram, I'll do my whole body.
So if it pleases Lord Ram, I'll cover my whole body.
He wants to serve Ram.
He wants to serve Ram. So.
So and then Sauram, something that in the yarns or something should somehow take away a fly or something. So that Hanuman was like looking up around.
So. So when Ral Ram was yawning, he wanted to chase away the flying or fly or something. So Hanuman was. Hanuman was looking for that fly.
Looking very intensely at Ram.
He was very looking very intensely at Lord Ram.
Ram was sleep. Because.
Ram couldn't sleep. Ram couldn't sleep. He couldn't rest. So Hanuman was quite fired up.
He's very enthusiastic devotee.
So he's a very enthusiastic devotee.
Like this. So I couldn't figure out what was the herb in the mountain. It brought the whole mountain.
So they were asked. He was asked to bring a herb. He couldn't find the herb. Then he brought the whole. He didn't know which herb was it. So he brought the whole mountain.
So like this Hanuman is one of the best servants.
So like this Hanuman was a. It was wonderfully serving.
Now we're just studying Shantaras.
So now we are studying Shantaras.
And so Santaras means you appreciate Krishna.
So Santaras means you appreciate Krishna, you know, or something.
The tulsi, the Han Zhao, whatever. And what just originated Loving something might.
Start that tulsi or conch shell. But you just appreciate it.
I love it.
You love it.
And they're solid.
It may be ecstatic.
But it doesn't include serving.
But it doesn't include serving. So another verse from Bhakti Rasamruta Sindhu staring at the tip of the nose, behaving like a renunciant, walking while looking two yards in front on the ground, showing the Gyana Mudra, keeping the hand vertical with the thumb and forefinger joint. Absence of hatred even towards enemies of the Lord, lacking intense attachment to the devotees of the Lord, showing great regard for the final destruction of the material bondage Siddhartha and for being liberated while living in the world Jeevan Mukti Indifference, non possessiveness, lack of false ego and silence are some of the specifical special anubhavas of a person in Shantarasa that show his detached mood.
Someone was asking me what was the symptom of Santa Rasa.
So someone was asking me what's the symptom of Santarasa?
Thakur is really going into detail.
Bhakti Vinod Thakur is really going into the details. Rla Prabhupada's translation of the above mentioned verse from Bhakti Rasamruta Sindhu. There are certain symptoms of great sages who are situated in Shantarasa devotional service and these symptoms are exhibited as follows. They concentrate their eyesight on the tip of the nose and they behave just like an Avadhuta. Avaduta means a highly elevated mystic who does not care for any social, religious or Vedic conventions. Another symptom is that such persons are very careful to step forward when giving speeches. When they speak, they join together the forefinger and the thumb. This is called Gyanamudra position. And they are not against the atheist nor are they particularly inclined to the devotees. Such persons give stress to liberation and detachment from the materialistic way of life. They are always neutral and have no affection for no misidentification with anything material. They are always grave but fully absorbed in thoughts of the supreme personality of Godhead. These uncommon features develop in devotees who are situated in Shantarasa. So Shantarasa is a kind of a.
Neutral situation, but it's based on personality on it.
But it is based on the personality of Godhead.
Oh, they appreciate.
They appreciate the personality of Godhead and his wonderful qualities.
And they are awe reverenced.
They are with awe and reverence.
And so they are absorbed in the thoughts of the Supreme.
They absorbed in the thoughts of the supreme personality of Godhead. Haribol in Shantarasa all the Satvika Bhavas such as standing of hair on Anne, perspiration and shaking of the body occur except fainting in Shantarasa one manifests the Sanchari Bhavas of Nirveda. Despondency, Dhriti contentment, Harsha jubilant, Matihi ascertaining the truth, Smritihi remembrance, Vishada despair, Utsukata, impatience, Aavega, confusion, vitarka, argumentative and others. Okay, In Shantarasa the Stai Bhava is Shantarati. It has two types, Sama ordinary and Sandra intense. Okay, there's another verse from Bhaktira Samrita Sindhu quoted Varshl Bhakti Vinod Thakur. As in the case of Shukhadev Goswami, impressions of Jnana will slacken by the mercy of the Lord and the person will become skillful in tasting the bliss of Bhakti. Rasa Srila Prabhupada's translation of the above mentioned verse from Bhakti Ramrita Sindhu Srila Prabhupada writes, the same thing happened to Shuk Dev Goswami who also reformed himself by the grace of the Lord and took to the path of devotional service. Giving up the way of impersonal realization.
Unlike the Rajamas was also liberated.
So like the four Kumara Sukhadev Goswami also converted. Liberated, was liberated so much.
But he became devotee and appreciated the Lord for his transcendental holiday.
So he became a devotee and appreciated the transcendental qualities of the Lord.
Sandra Rasa is one of the important Rasas, one of the first of the five Staivas.
So Shanta Rasa is one of the important Rasas, is the first of the five Stai Bhavas and.
Haridam. Everybody has great appreciation for the Lord.
So in Haridham everybody has a great appreciation for the Lord. All the Taj the Lord exists there as Narayana in different avatars.
So reading about devotee and.
So we are reading about Devahuti in the Bhagavatam.
She's the mother of Kapiladev.
She is the mother of Kapila Dev.
And every devotee in Haridham has his appreciation of the glories of the Lord.
So every devotee in Haridham has the appreciation of the glories of the Lord. Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Sri Sri Radha Madhava Sakurinda Mayapur Chandra Gira Jaki Shrishi Pancha Tatvaki Shri Si Prahlad Nadevaki Srila Prabhupada Ki Srila Jayapataka Swami Guru Maharaj. Is blessing all of you.
All questions.
Oh, you want to answer some questions? Oh, okay, okay. Some questions. Could you Please pass my phone. Where's my foot? Any question?
Some of the great sages, they have.
So some of the great sages, they have Shantaras.
They appreciate the Lord.
So they appreciate the Lord's greatness.
And. They are ecstatic in that.
They're ecstatic in that.
Wonderful.
The Lord is actually wonderful a lot.
It's not on us all to have this appreciation of the Lord. This is why I started.
So it's natural to have this appreciation of the Lord and to be very ecstatic. So Gurmarch, your servants in Dasiyaras, they want you to take prasad now. So I mean you gave class this morning, so take Prasad. Okay? Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. Sure. Okay. Sure.
Okay.
Ten minutes. Jai. Wonderful. Any question?
Yeah, from Australia.
Some Australian question.
Write it down.
Okay.
Can you hear it?
So you said about in Ramavata, Hanman was a Hanman was there Great example of a devotee in Dasiras. What about Krishna? Is there anyone in Krishna? Leela?
Trees. The animals.
The trees and animals in Vrindavan they are Enchantaras.
Right side of the. Some sage was meditating on in the Himalayas.
They say that some sages. Some sages were meditating in the Himalayas.
And they heard Krishna's flute.
They heard Krishna's flute and they became ecstatic.
They started hitting the head on the rock.
And they started hitting their head on the rock. Somebody has to wipe. Okay. Gurumaj, there's another question. The last question. So Gurmaraj, this is from one of your sheltered disciples from Australia, Pranav. I have a question regarding the form of the Guru as it manifests in this world. If a new devotee is charmed by the Guru's form or has some attraction for it, how does one avoid this from being sentimental? What is the qualification to be attracted to the form? Is it necessary at all?
Not necessary. I don't know. Some people are charged.
I don't know. It's not necessary. Some people are attracted.
When I have association with Guru then build his presence.
When they have their association with the Guru, they may feel his presence.
When I joined, I was seeing auras on people.
When I joined, I was seeing auras on people.
And Prabhupada's aura was yellow and colored the whole world.
Prabhupada's aura was yellow and covered the whole room. And then Prabhupada, someone asked Prabhupada that he sees auras. What's that?
He'll get aura.
Okay. And he said he would get over it. Don't worry. Now I don't see. Hare Krishna. Dear Guru Maharaj, please accept my respectful obeisances. You said Prabhupada wanted all to become gurus. Does that mean Diksha or Siksha Guru? Question from your spiritual daughter Haritha Madhavi Devi Dasi.
As far as I'm concerned as other kind of guru.
As far as I'm concerned, it's every kind of guru.
Is it also how knowledge of Krishna consciousness.
They should all have the knowledge of Ka consciousness.
Lord Chaitanya said Kilo river.
Among sutras above sutras.
And Yeshua says in Gita Sriyas Vaija Sujas. Whoever surrenders to him is the highest destination.
Krishna says Sriya Vaishya Sudra. Those who surrenders to him, those who surrender to him, they can reach the highest destination.
So?
So some may be Sikh Sugarus, some may be Thiksha gurus.
Everyone should understand. Are really the Krishna consciousness moment.
So the point is everyone should understand. What was the last point?
The Krishna consciousness.
They should understand the Krishna consciousness movement. Okay, okay Guru Maharaj, no more question. Hare Krishna, could you please bless all of them? Krishna Matirastu. Thank you all of you for coming. See you all tomorrow. Hare Krishna.
