Jaya Pataka Swami explains initiation as formal acceptance of the guru and the entire disciplic succession. He describes it as lifelong dedication to serving Krishna through the spiritual master, rooted in the disciple's attitude of humility and attributing all mercy and blessings to the guru and the succession.

Initiation is a formal acceptance of guru, acceptance of the spiritual master and the whole disciplic succession. It means a dedication to serving Ka eternally. And the service is offered through the disciplic succession, through the spiritual master. Everything we do, whether the Guru is physically present or not, everything we do we offer to Ka through the Guru. And the disciple considers that any mercy that they are receiving is being handed down through the disciplic succession and through the Guru. So the credit for any blessings is also given to the Guru. That's the humility and Ka conscious attitude of the disciple.
