Śrīmad Bhagavad-gītā (12.11) Class #JayapatakaSwamiArchives

A recorded lecture by Jaya Pataka Swami on Bhagavad-gītā (chapter 12, verse 11) emphasizing methods of devotional service. Core points: if one cannot fix the mind on Krishna, one should act without attachment to results or perform regulated bhakti practices; if direct devotional activity is impractical because of social/familial obstacles, giving charity and social service (temple work, community service, donations, book distribution) is recommended as a purifying preparatory practice. The speaker illustrates these teachings with stories from the Gaudiya tradition—Lord Chaitanya's mercy to a king during Ratha-yatra, Srila Prabhupada's appreciation of simple service (e.g., donations like toilet paper), and modern book-distribution programs—arguing that service demonstrates desire for mercy and opens the heart to Krishna.

About 5,000 years ago (speaker's claim: '5,000 some years ago').
It Jam Ra. If, however, you are unable to work in this consciousness, then try to ask giving up all results of your work and try to be self situated. Translation with repetition by His Divine Grace. If, however, you are unable to work in this consciousness and try to act giving up all results of your work and trying to be self situated, we have Russian devotees can understand and indeed they can say it. One is unable to even sympathize with the activities of Ka Consciousness because of social, familial or religious considerations or because of some other impediments. If one attaches himself directly to the activities of Ka Consciousness, there may be objection from the family members or so many other difficulties. For one who has such a problem is the bias that we sacrifice the accumulated result of his activities to some good cause. Such procedures are described in the Vedic rules. There are many descriptions of sacrifices, of special functions of the pumundi. Everybody understands the Pumundi is or special work in which the results of one's previous action may be applied. Thus one may gradually become elevated to the state of knowledge. It is also found that when one who is not even interested in the activities of Krishna Consciousness gives charity to some hospital or other social institution, he gives up the hard earned results of his activities. That is also recommended here because by the practice, by giving up the fruits of one's activities, one is sure to purify his mind. Gradually, in that purified stage of mind, one becomes able to understand Ka Consciousness. Of course, Ka consciousness is not dependent on any other experience because Ka consciousness itself can purify one's mind. But if there are impediments to Ka Consciousness, one may try to give up the result of his action. In that respect, social service, community service, national service, sacrifice for one's country, etc. May be accepted so that someday one may come to the stage of pure devotional service to the Supreme Lord. In the Bhagavad Gita we find it stated, if one decides to sacrifice for the supreme cause, even if he does not know that the supreme cause is Ka, he will come gradually to understand that Ka is the Supreme Cause by the sacrificial method. Let's end the Bhagavad Gita chapter 12, text 11 in the matter of devotional service is translated and purported by His Divine Grace. This is a series where Krishna first has to fix the mind upon him, engage the intelligence in him, always live in him, and this way you get back to him, be with you. Next thing is, if you can't fix your mind without deviation, then Do Abyatsa Yogema, you do regulated principles of Bhaitun Yoga. If somebody can do regulated principles of Bhaita Yoga, they work for Ka directly. Working for Ka could be serving the Devis by coming and washing the temple floor. Or coming and giving donations to the Devis. Fruits, flowers, grains, honey. Or doing some other service, something for the baby. Could be mowing the lawn, cleaning the kitchen, or any kind of service reaching the Rathatra, helping with some other service that the temple needs. Let's say there's about this verse. What if somebody. They can't. Maybe there comes such religions where all the other family members freak out if they would come to a temple or they would directly associate. There are a few countries in the world like that where there are some religions where it's very difficult to Krishna. For some people at least if they think that they're giving to the supreme Court, then that also gets you Krishna, understand the dynasty. That supreme cause is Krishna. Or at least as they're charitable and they learn to give for something that's very purified. Drishti people are very selfish. They only think about. I mean, if they start thinking about others, even if it's in the material sense, at least that's better than being selfish. And that will help them to some degree. The Prabhupada brings the point up that Ka consciousness doesn't depend on that. In other words, you can directly do devotional service without giving mundane charity work. Now you have to do one day. This is just an option. For some reason or another, somebody can't always think of Krishna, can't do devotional service or can't work for Krishna directly. Okay, at least be charitable. Serve the welfare of a greater presence of people, lives apart from the need itself. So that's Father. Lord Chaitanya also has described that it should be like a tree. Trees are acknowledged rain. That somebody wants to get out of the rain and go under the shade of a tree. Trees are standing in the sun, in the rain and the snow, in all circumstances. So they are giving people shelter. The devotees should be like that. They should be there to give shelter to anybody who wants it. Regardless of their caste, color, creed, gender, whatever it may be. They're there for everyone. Those who understand what I'm saying, lift your left hand. So in this way devotees were considered the most charitable. They considered also as the booty Da. Da means giving and Bodhida means this profuse benefactor profuse the giving. Because there's no higher charity one can give than Ka. You Give ka than. That means you've given everything to someone. Once in this Rath Yatra festival Lord she tell you by sweeping the floor the road before the lady. So in those days, royalty, they didn't do things like that. They didn't sweep roads. They had enough people to do that kind of menial service. The fact that before Jagannath he humbled himself and he took this menial task for Lord Chaitanya that was a big message. That was a moving point. So Lord Caitanya decided that he would give him mercy. Otherwise, Lord Caitanya was not warming up to Prachaparuja Maharaj. Prachapuja Maharaj had repeatedly requested an audience would watch the Karmya. But every time he refused. I said, I'm a Sannyasi. I have to maintain my renounced mood. If I and so take a risk to associate with the materialistic people like Kimas that maybe I will lose myself. I may become materialistic also. So I cannot social Kings are very materialistic people. There's so much materialification. So I must avoid kings. It was almost offensive because of course Pitabhudra was a very pious king. It was a rerogatory kind of statement against kings. Maybe realistic in many cases, but not always everyone is so much materialistic. But Prithvur really didn't take any offense. Rather he became very affected by that. He thought that everybody in my kingdom is fortunate enough. They can see Balaji Thania. They can associate with him. They can get his mercy of the private audience. I'm the only one person in the entire kingdom who's forbidden from being able to get direct association from what she's coming. So that's one thing I want in my life more than anything else is to serve what Sufism to have an association. So by being the king, I am forbidden from having that association. Wesley USA lived. He was almost becoming suicidal. There is so much depression from not being able to associate with Chaitanya Mahatrabu. Then what Chaitanya? By the intervention of Ramana Ndarai he called the son the prince of the son of the king and gave him some chatter and some mercy. So this way give this to your father so that the father would remain with a little hope. Okay, Maybe it's one day I get to work with something and not get out of his depression. Otherwise it was interfering with the smooth functioning of the karma. So for everything changed. The Lord Shetimir saw this king sweeping a robe before Jannah. We thought, I'm going to give this King once to. And that's a very important point. Because Prabhupada mentioned that if we serve Ka, that's a way we can also get the mercy from Lord Chaitanya. Service brings mercy. Many people, they want mercy but they're not showing any service. But if you want mercy, you demonstrate that by service. It says in Brahma Samhita even the Goddesses in the spiritual world, they are sweeping their roads just to please Narayana, just to attract the Supreme Lord. Not like there's a lot of garbage in the streets. There won't go relief. But still that I am doing this menial service is to please the Lord. Thousands and thousands of Goddess of Fortuna during this simple service. If we want to get the mercy of Krishna, we need to demonstrate that we desire it through our service. Like action speaks louder than words. A person, we directly pray for it, it's no harm. But if we also do some service. And that's going to have a very bigger impact. So that's what happened in the life of this Prachaba Rudra Maharaj. After he did the sweeping, then he went to his palace roof and then he could see Chaitanya Mahaprabhu was dancing. There were seven parties of kirta around the raths. And Vocaitanya was going from one party to the next. All of a sudden he expanded himself. And he was simultaneously in all the seven parties at the same time. Which was quite a miracle. And King Punta Rudrap would have seen that. Some of his aides couldn't see that. Only one other Syria, the holy was with him could see it. So there was not a morning. It was a special mercy that the king was given. And the people in the kirtan groups, they didn't know there was no like instant replay video or something. The big screen in there, you know, look at it. They sent him private. Nobody knows. There was no other big buildings at that time. It seems only the king was having that type of viewpoint. Others they didn't see. Everybody thought the Lord Chaitanya is in our group. We are the lucky group. Look at he's staying with us all this time. So they're very happy. Everybody wants the association. So that's not the only mercy, the law that he got. Later, after many hours of pure time, near the end of the Rathyatra there was the one ritual that's performed where Lord Satanya, where the Lord Jagannath gathered. He's offered Bhoga. He's offered offerings from all of the people. Literally thousands of people are Putting out their offerings, things like prepared for Lord Jagannath. And so all these offerings are offered by the priests. The place is called Vipassana. So all that ceremony was going on. Then Vocitania went with his associates and they took a rest of their strenuous. Kirta was lying on a stone slab, his eyes closed, just relaxing. So someone had advised the king, don't go and dress as a king to go as the ordinary Vaishnava said. He had changed his clothes and this was wearing a dog each other with you love. So even if the people don't know what the king looks like without his helmet and his turban and his royal shutters and all the trappings that he normally wears, not many people can see him very close up. Some people are not so much aware of what he looks like in a similar way. Except those who are intimately connected to him. Not like we had today to see the politicians faces published in all the newspapers and the cnn, BBC and everything, Fox channel, whatever. Demanding really too much free advertising. You can see what even the most Imani people in the world or the different leaders in the world, what they look like and see them speaking and talking. Here most people would get that kind of opportunity. So when he came in, most people didn't know who he was. A few, one or two might have known. But he said can I just give a little massage to all his feet of Lord Chaitanya while he's resting. And he was. So he sat down and started massaging Wall Chaitanya for his feet, his legs and he was singing Gita, the Gopi Gita from 10th Canto Bhagavatam. So when he came to that verse that whoever gives the Khutamahita of Ka the nectar of Ka's discussion, that person is Bodhidhar. He is the unlimited immersionful person. Then Lord Chaitanya just sat up and said that I don't know who you are but I'm very grateful to you for giving me these wonderful verses from Srimad Bhagavata that my poor Van Dakim, I have nothing in the world. I don't have money, I don't have land, I don't have anything I can give you. All I can give you is one hug. And he just hugged the king saying that I don't know who you are. You're such a nice person. You've been chanting so nice status songs for me. They gave him one hug and you know you can. I was going to say we could imagine whatever you could imagine, you know how much ecstasy, how much mercy came to God at that moment. So all his desires were fulfilled. While Voitzekania stuck to his gun, stuck to his principle that I won't be. I don't know who you are. He's not dressed as a king. I'm introducing himself. I am his royal master. He is coming in. So like that, he got the mercy so we can directly do some seva for Krishna, for his devotees, for the Devi. That's ideal situation. But it gives us so much mercy. Lord Chaitanya practically showed that as somebody who has served, appreciate that very much. Similarly to the Prabhupada, he also used to appreciate when people would do some service. I heard one time that in 26 Second Avenue there was a class when Young was sitting and giving evening Gita class. And one African American, gigantic, maybe like basketball player or something, football, but very big built. He walked in the temple carrying a box, right? With his shoes on. Like people said, what's going on here? He was standing there and then prophesy, yes, what do you have there? This is donation for you and sister. What is it? And it turned out it was a box of toilet paper. So then the Alma said, we take the box and put it there, right there, toilet. So somebody took the box and put it there. And the guy turned around and walked off and brought up a towel with good service attitude. So here was someone who had been giving charity and he wasn't practicing, didn't know even how to take his shoes off and wash him and take. Prabhupada saw the good in his action. Buddha picked out so many faults. He picked up. He has a good service. I came to do some. Sabah may not know all the intricacies of devotional practice, but somehow he came and did some service. Srila Prabhupada appreciated that. Srila Prabhupada, he will always find that spark of enthusiasm, of service consciousness. And then he would fan it, he would nurture it in this way. He would bring out that person into devotional service. Our temple. Prabhupada said in India that nobody should go hungry within 10 miles of a temple because it's the house of Ka. Christians have a father of everybody. So the father won't let his children go hungry. If you're in the presence of the father, mother, you don't want you to be hungry. They're always insisting you have something to eat and care about your welfare. So temple should be like that. I don't know in Hawaii if there are hungry people or not but spiritually, of course, there are many hungry people will need spiritual foods. Our Hershela Baba said that you cannot be happier in the material world. But at the same place, maybe it's light. But of course, you know, even here in Hawaii there's birth, death, all these disease and other problems. This is. Sometimes you have storms here, sometimes it's too much rain, sometimes there's not enough rain. Nothing that happens too much. Somebody told me when I was visiting here that some of the tourists, they don't realize that Hawaii is a tropical place. And tropical places have lots of rain. I can remember the past week it's remaining. Somebody was sailing up for two years, come to the tropical island for vacation, but the whole time it was raining. They wanted to get the sun burned, go back and show everybody that their skin has turned browner and golden, whatever. So they thought that their whole life was like a waves for anticipated happiness they're going to get lying on the beach. When they visited Hawaii didn't happen because it was raining. They felt so much depression from their failed holiday that they were on the 23rd floor of one of the big hotels. They just held hands and jumped out of the window. What's more to live for, Hawaii holiday is not a success. So you may be saving somebody from jumping out of the window, giving them the language. You never know we're talking now. This December is Eida Janti month. This is the month when Bhagavad Gita was spoken in practice. Last Epharisi, only five days ago was the day that Bhanda Sana and San Gita was spoken 5,000 some years ago. So we're discussing how Krishna gives his mercy in the form of the Vaan and Gita to uplift the upon our souls. I heard that in France there was this situation where somebody was very frustrated with life. No matter what he did, he wasn't getting happy. So many problems were there. What was the purpose of life? He was praying guided. Please guide me, tell me what is the purpose of life? What are we meant to be doing? What? Who are we? This kind of existential question. When he didn't get some immediate answer, then he thought, well, let me at least have those fishing. I can, you know, relax. Fishing is a relaxing sit by the water, fish. Then I catch a fish. Poor fish. So while he was fishing, it seemed that he caught one very big fish and it was like heavy trying to pull it out because, you know, pole is bending, finally picks it and he sees it's not a fish at all. It's a box. His bait has a snake and some box. So he pulled the box out of the water, put it up and it was opened up the box. It was somehow very tight box. It was very perfectly sealed inside. There was a dry copy of Bhaglad Gita as it is. So Krishna had sent him exactly what he had prayed for. And in many ways like people, sometimes they are praying for Ka in one way or another. And then Ka gives them the association of devotees. So one of the greatest services you can do is just to try to give people Ka. Try to give them some information about life, about who they are. I was as I arrived here. There were so many signs welcoming the international meeting of Jehovah Witnesses. Been placed to come on from all over the world, all the jewel or witnesses and have their meeting. But it seems that I went to see their branch office in London, the outskirts of London for the UK and some parts of the world. That's the branch headquarters. The world headquarters apparently is in Brooklyn, but I've never been there. In Canada and UK they had 600 residents volunteer workers in their ashram. They had multi story condominium with roofs. Well, I've never seen such a facility for Archie Houses. 600 people could work. Families would get married. Couples would give them their own homes. And that is a well organized. His main activity was published these books Watchtower and Awaken and some other riches. So they have the printing press, their whimsical web offset high speed is quite interesting when they set it up. So in order to maximize those who do their printing so they don't waste time and other things, they have devotees members who are the room cleaner like in a hotel. They go clean all the rooms. House cleaner, laundry, gigantic laundry, professional laundry, clothes. So the people who are doing the book publishing, they're just doing that. Those who are the backup, they're doing laundry, cooking. Every day they have their morning class before they take breakfast. So we saw that very interesting because their system is that everybody should be a witness. They should go out and witness. It means that they should share their love for good God, love for Jesus with other people. That they should preach. In other words. And they take a commitment of distributing so many of those magazines every month. Each one will take a commitment even who is working there. They had to somehow find a nigga tenant. Everyone has to do how much that's up to them. That's there very. But everyone listen to those books. I was thinking this is a real book distributing program. So many of our in this month of Gita, Jat and many of our ISKCON devotees also take certain number of Bhagavad Gitas or other literature to distribute in this month, give it to their neighbors, to their work colleague, or give them donation however they want to do it. I have a disciple. I have a disciple. And when he's retired now, he's one of the Pujaris in our Chennai temple. But when he was working in India, he was the quality control manager. I don't know if that's the right title, but something to that effect in an international company called wimco. Wimco, which is a Swedish collaboration that makes matches. They're the best match company in India. They work, never get a bad match. And in India too, in some places, the whole match just kind of rubs off these works. So he was. What he used to do was he'd give 10% of his monthly income to buy books. He'd buy Shiva, but books, a whole array of books. He had a little can with a slit on the top. He'd go around and he would give to his work colleagues. He had 6,000 workers of his factory. So systematically, you go to each department and give them a book, tell them that this is free. You don't have to be ready, you don't have to buy it. But if you'd like to give a donation, you can put in this can here. This is for buying more books to give out to people. This is my service. I want everyone to get some of these books so people will give something. Maybe what he told me 60% of whatever he spent on the books he would give back. He wasn't even getting hundreds on the football. But that was his save, by agreement. So eventually he covered all the. Almost all the 6,000 people. He never gave the higher court cabinets because they thought maybe they don't want, you know, atheistic Communist Party members with that really hardcore union members of a particular Communist party. But then they asked him, why you're not giving to us, Allah? If you want, please take it. You gave to them. They also took. So in this way, when he covered all the 6,000 workers, he got a promotion. He was made national in charge of quality. These are all the six factories around the country. Book distribution field. Just experiment. Anyway, somehow people can do. One of my disciples in San Diego just invited us to seek out the boud. And she started a program called Weekend warriors, where the congregational devotees and the weekend they go out and study devotees. And I just heard about it in Sacrament, where she told me so very Interesting somehow to get the message, you know, people get the books. Even though I may not be able to give a big lecture, I can't. People don't have the time to sit and listen to me, even if I could. We give them a book and they read it. So many hundreds of hours of information, at least how that they can hear about Krishna. Then we make ourselves available. If you have any questions, here's my card. Contact me. I'll try to help you. If there's something I can't answer, I have other friends who are senior to me that can give you the information. There are lots of nice people. When I was flying here, not exactly the Hawaii way, but on the way from New Orleans to Sacramento, one lady came and just kneeled down next to me and asked me, what is this? You wear this dress and mark on your forehead. What does it mean? I'm sorry that I can answer this, but she was very respectful. And then I explain how we make our bodies as temples to God and dedicate ourselves for the service of the Lord. It's really wonderful that there are people like you standing up for what you believe. And you're doing such a selfish service. Do very appreciate, rarely thanks that someone like that. So there are a lot of nice people in the world and if you could connect with them, you never know. Even some people who are unlikely candidates, sometimes they open up, those communists. So we try to give out this bible. Gita, thank you for watching our videos. Be sure to subscribe to our channel. We publish new videos every day. And don't forget to like and share our channel.
