Śrīmad Bhāgavatam Class (6.5.26, 27-28) || Melbourne, Australia #JayapatakaSwamiArchives

This chunk contains a lecture/discussion centered on Śrīmad Bhāgavatam (6.5.26–28) where the speaker (Chris) explains that Vedic mantras beginning with Omkara are equivalent in essence to chanting Krishna (and recommends the Hare Krishna maha-mantra for this age), and that such chanting should ideally be accompanied by austerities (examples: months of fasting on water/air, bathing in Ganges/Jamuna or the sea, and giving up four vices). The conversation broadens into practical outreach and demography: establishing centers (Vrindavan, Mayapur), using yoga retreats and bhajan events for Western outreach, challenges in different cultures (vegetarianism, family size), and programs to encourage practice (16 rounds, a 1992 GBC-approved six-year/step program). Personal anecdotes trace Chris’s initiation and early temple life; Kazu mentions a specific birth date for his child.

A six-year/step chanting program approved by the GBC in 1992 (encouraging incremental rounds: 1, 4, 8, 16).
Translation by His Divine grace and Narayana Narayana Saras the second group of sons performed penances in the same way as the first. They bathed in the holy water and by his touch all the dirty material desires in their hearts were cleansed away. They murmured mantras beginning with Omkara and underwent a severe course of austerities. Report by Srila Prabhupada Every Vedic mantra is called Brahma because each mantra is preceded by the Brahmaksha or O K. For example, in all the Vedic mantras I am presented, represented by Pranava or Omkara. Thus, chanting of the Vedic mantras beginning with Omkara is directly chanting of Ka's name. There's no difference whether one chants Omkara or addresses the Lord as Krishna, the meaning is the same. But Sri Chai Chandra Mahapra has recommended that in this age one chant the Hare Krishna Maha Mantra. Although there is no difference between Hare Ka and the Vedic mantras beginning with Omkara, Shichetanya Mahaprabhu, the leader of the spiritual movement for this age, has recommended that one chin For a few months the sons of Prajabati Baksha drank only water and eat only air, thus undergoing great austerity as they recited this mantra. Let us offer our respectful basis under the Rayana, the supreme Personality of Godhead who is always situated in his transcendental abode. Since he is the Supreme Person Paramahamsa, let us offer our respectful obeisances unto Him. Purport from these verses it is apparent that the chanting of the Maha Mantra or the Vedic mantras must be accompanied by severe austerities. In Kaliyunga, people cannot undergo severe austerities like those mentioned, drinking only water and eating only air. For many months. One cannot imitate such a process, but at least one must undergo some austerity by giving up four unwanted principles, namely illicit sex, union and intoxication gambling. Anyone can easily practice this Napa and then the chanting of the Hare Krishna Mantra will be effective without delay. One should not give up the process of austerity. If possible, one should bathe in the water of the Ganges or the Muna or in the absence of the Ganges and Jamuna that may bathe in the water of the sea. This is an item of austerity. Akrishna conscious movement has therefore established two very large centers, one in Vrindavan, another in Mayapur Gamudli. There one may bathe in the Ganges of Jamuna, chant the Hare Krishna Mantra, and thus become perfect and return home back to Godhood. The first end is likely the Baptist swami translation of her part is to text 26, 27, 28, chapter 5 and 6. When we were going in the Ganges Safari two years ago, we went up to Shayla path. But as far as you could go bad season, because they don't open up down Moshe until later in the year. A few months later they would open it on the way we were reading this book. So there. There's 108 verses in the seven of the Quran verifying the gantries. One of the verses said that so Australia.
One of the first dimensions is because all the holy rivers flow into the ocean. The ocean.
After that Samadhi or Maidas Catholic became a Mahatrita. Does that mean that people suddenly, especially today and see if you remember like how it is backward. You get more information once you get this. I don't know. I haven't read any specific reference or speculates. I didn't see how much benefits. Ironically, one Ayurvedic chimeras told me that if you have a nervous problem, maybe early in the morning in the rivers, it's good for the nerves. If you have a problem with your organs, kidney and iron bathe in the ocean. Ocean is good for the organs nervous system. Sacramento. We had somebody who was on the verge of a nervous breakdown and go early in the morning and bathed again. He became more peaceful. That's another symbol. This is talking more about the spiritual. This is talking more spiritual here. Because the point was that he descends first verse of Daksha. They were sent for purification. Daksha wants them to have children. But he wants them also to have really good children and to be spiritually prepared for that. So he sent them to this holy place to do austerities, to bathe the Rimoli river, to chant mantras. But his ultimate goal is they should do all this, get purified and then have really good progeny which will benefit the world. He said die hard. He hasta progenitor. It's one of the progenitors. So that's what he's supposed to do. It's a service to Rama. He gets upset because Narayan only keeps liberating his sons. Now they're all pure, they're in a holy place, they're free from material desires. So they're right for being preached to the need of charities. That's not the subject matter of these verses, but that's the subject matter of this chapter. It's also interesting that how thy shall, in spite of the risk that his sons got with all two Sannyas and went back to guardian. He was a liberal person and he allowed them to go. I mean he was liberal in one sense that he knew that they needed to get purified and this was a very good place to do it. So he sent them again. His only his faith is that after getting purified you want going into the Griyastha ashram won't be a big danger. He wants to get purified but he wants them to become grihastas. Right now in the world it's like strange situation going on. Like in India they still have this policy to be in China because they have an exponing population to discourage the people from having more children. If a government employee has more than two children, you can't get a promotion or like have a child. Maybe $9,500 cash bonus. Wow. Because not having children, it's only one out of every three. Conception comes to a challenge but most of them are important. So the governments in Finland there's also cash bonuses by the different kinds of cash bonuses of things. Because they're predicting that 30 years the population of feminine will be finished. People aren't having babies anymore. The ladies are not interested so much in having babies. They're very expensive. Health risk, wood, fat. So many different problems in India. Most like the glories in Indian languages. They really want to have children. But in some of the European countries it's not in the world right now. So they were offering all kinds of incentives. I have a Slovenian disciple and for having a child one of the parents will get a 13 month paid leave. One whole year salary, which is a lot of money. People make $30,000 a year the whole year just for having a baby. And since his wife doesn't work and he's the only worker he gets to leave. So he went to Maya for a plan having another baby. So it's kind of interesting some places in the world they're in France always read the newspapers, their chicken plants, what's going on in the world. And it seems to me all over Europe big crisis that their populations are going down. In Japan it's super crisis. And so Japan has been inviting bringing immigrants. Now they have to bring in immigrants because otherwise the poor people have worked. So India Channel and I take over the world. I integrated everywhere. This happened here in the US.
Especially the professional classes of European ancestry. They're not breeding so much as most of African Americans and Hispanics demographic growth this summer. So the population's shifting northern European to African American and Hispanic American really quickly because the educated Northern European sister people that are invested in Europeans are not so interested in having any children. Their birth rate is like 1.3 or.
Something.
For kids Japan health insurance is free up to five years. My city was five years free for facing health insurance. Yeah, I was seven and a half years in Japan. I obtained my PhD and post PhD from Japan.
You have children there too? Yeah. You also applied for you I obtained.
My child born was born in Japan 2002 May 16. About the Citizen they will ask you when he will be adult. Then my son can but after 18 my part they will not give the first.
Knowledge. Different governments have different policies based on their own political interests. The universe had a strong and needed to be filled up with people. And they wanted good people. So the progenitors they were given the task of filling out the universe. So they had to progeny it. So that's why somehow they had this power that they could have enemy children. But it wasn't just a quantity. That's what's really coming through here is all these austerities and penances is so that they have a high quality of. What the governments are just worried about is this quantity. And they're not workers. Maybe some places are worrying about the quality of multi racial situation. I don't think they can really do anything like that. So we actually probably stress that having more people isn't a problem. If they're good in a family. If you have one bad apple, you can create a big habit for the whole family. But if they're all good obedient children, everyone's cooperative and everyone works for the interests of the family. Having a big family isn't a problem. I don't think we get a bonus in America. We have no more kids though. Penalty, tax, penalty, tax penalty. Why don't you get tax deductions?
If you're low income you get earned. If you get married, there's a tax penalty.
There used to be anyway more children than you get to deduct.
You get to deduct.
Actually in Canada they also give penis.
Huge country small.
Yep. It's the cost it takes to bring them up far out for this tax.
It's not like you're. It's not very. It's a little tax free.
It's better to have children than that actually. On your taxes.
On your taxes.
Yeah.
But like you said, all the money.
You pay probably stressing that we should base upon having a better quality. That's where we asked us if they do harmonize samskara days when they want to have children they go to the temple, pray the deities for having a Krishna child two basic things that is like a blue Brahma pyramid for the devotees who chant 50 rounds. It's very purifying then to have a Ka conscious so children also Louis somewhere Prabhupada mentioned that the third. If you have three generations of Krishna conscious children then the third generation they start getting warm with satiric qualities. The second generation is the kusham because their grandparents and how many amount to devotees so their life is mixed. But by the third generation we have the grandparents, the parents, everybody's devoted, everyone's sadric vegetarian. Then it starts to take effect genetically or whatever. I didn't say the word genetics but it still takes some effect. But they are actually born with more subjective qualities. So we see Niveer's eyes a high casualty rate with our second generation for various reasons although somebody to study that when the families are broken, one's a devotee, one's not a devotee. Then there's this way but both are devotees they tend to be more. The Lord is also misfit. So really we have to give a lot of attention to our youth. They become Ka conscious and they may have children. Those children should be more easily more easily take to the satvic habits. So although whatever induction they have is from our point of view he's materialistic, he's very much in the mode of witness. He's very good for a good materialist. He's a Karma Kandi and he wants to have good children. He wants them to be devotees also he said teaches them to chant the Ryan mantras. We said when our process is simplified can't fast on water and air, can't imitate that Krishna Prashama do thou stare into the In India sometimes you give the Prashada to the people and there'd be surprises in India over In some states, 97% of the people are non vegetarians. Maybe the highest vegetarian state in the clear is Nichira and only 80% or 20% vegetarians. So it's not. It's like, you know, it's not the holy land. There's also a lot of mission to be done. There's a lot of crime work. Maybe in South India the Brahmanas are more vegetarian but in Bengal you have the Brahmanas.
So are they eating fish and chicken? Are they eating out of the Bengali?
Meanwhile Bengali is like fish, but they eat other things. They eat gold meat offered to Kali they eat other Generally the Hindus have weighed the beef.
Because When I was living there that was 30 years ago it wasn't. It's, I mean where the fish was there on deeper evaluation well it doesn't.
Mean that they eat it every day but they're not pure vegetarian they may be more, much more vegetarian than their diet because meat is very expensive so many people but when they have some big wedding or feast day that they serve on average.
Have you seen this change since Mr. LA first sent you there? Have you noticed an interior the culture like that over the decades that probably.
Probably not because it's changed. I mean now we're seeing more people because we're a number of congregations increasingly people were involved with they're going to be over 100,000 congratulational members from my aboard we're all strictly following the floor we go strictly A lot of people when I'm in I fly in the planes and then they. They offer people meals. Most of people take non veg. I don't have any. I don't have any quote and they're offered the option veg or van veg. It's like instead of saying meat or veg, say non veg kind of sounds nice flesh or we had people come out to my airport and this one man said well if I could eat vegetarian food like this every day I'd be a vegetarian too. My wife doesn't know how to cook it. So then this had like I form a kind of a positive preaching giving nice feasts many people that can't observe at goddesses I even have a couple of aspiring disciples who say they get sick if they don't eat grains they go to the hospital and they're dead sick. Maybe trying buckwheat or something Must be something some alternative I don't know if it's psychological but even the simple things that we do for some people are very difficult. So we have our simple austerity to observe our kindnesses. We take Prashant Shah properly made it kara seeds pretty opulent they just serve some one wet vegetable with any papaya and potatoes kind of a gruel that's it. It's pretty austere. So that's really. So some people, you know they fear they're not ready for that much austerity. I don't know so it's actually when they have a khalasi kind of nice variety and they say well it's not so difficult they can do that made it easy was a good austerity. Some austerities are there due to the forken is closed but he made it easier said it makes a man of false austerity. I will boil peanuts. That's better. Thicker. We try to provide people to make it easy for them to practice Krishna consciousness. Many times find people they can't get up to 16 rounds. So then they think, well, I can't 16 rounds. So it's not for me. So like in this country, we have the six year program. 1992, it was approved by the GBC. Person chants one round a day. Give them a certificate, encourage them. They call them a shorter round. If they do four rounds vegetarian, then they can be considered gora sevaka. If they do eight rounds and they're trying to practice most of the rayma principles, then they're considered a sadhv Krishna satvaka. And then of the 16 rounds and four principles, they like. Try the bhakti program. Follow Baba's full process. So many places they do this program. I don't know if we're doing it in Atlanta, but it occurs to the congregation that, you know, you get. I want to give a ceremony one time so many children took maybe the first step, the second step. Different people were getting one life member. He said, well, I can get that blessing. What do I have to do? Sometimes little things. Only perishments mean a lot to people. And we did it here in Atlanta years ago. There was one congregational member, he's a drummer and was a drummer at that time. I don't know if he still did. And he had trouble with. He was vegetarian. It was not a problem for him. But being a drummer and a rock band, you can imagine there's a few temptations that are there. And so he was having trouble with other principles. So he qualified for the forearm vegetarian. No other vegetables, no major illegal things. So he took his or as Eva. And he remember afterwards he came to me and he said that, you know, I don't think, I don't know if I ever be apologetic. Initiation. I feel like I've been accepted. I belong. I'm part of the community in Russia. They have buttons. They tell me they have graphic designs for each of the levels. Like a little gorosei box. I can't remember what it is, but some little graphic symbol in Russian says Gore Seibar Kishtasar. So they wear Beatrice very branch. You can tell the verses beanbag. So we're trying to find different ways. Bharada muni. He has his direct approach. He's so powerful. These people are really right. They're all doing all these austerities. We have A difficult situation. How to get people to practice Ka consciousness and Lord Upa Goswami says yena tena prakarena Krishnamanduasat. By any means get people attached to Ka and then after they're attached to Krishna goes into. Sometimes we tend to put forward the rules first and we scare away people because immediately they think oh I can't do that. So then they say it's not for me. Rather than getting them to chant a ram or sometimes ask people how many rounds to chant. Look all embarrassed right up to 16. How many. That's why I do four, which is quite a lot. Explain the whole demography of the world. How many people chanting for a half hour a day the names of God. I tell them that's 2.5 million names of Krishna a year. It adds up. They get all really I'm trying to just encourage people in the light of the year, the cadet orange program, trying to reach out to the people that are not our normal customers. But I personally think we should have a program for any kind of mid group or any kind of possibility to have a program that ethnic or if it's interest based. But in our temple President Sindh, he wasn't for the Indian preaching because he really wanted to preach to the Australians. And then they purchased a resort and transformed it into a yoga retreat. And now he has it booked out for $10,000 a weekend for next year to yoga groups to come. And they cook them Krishna prashada, they offer them auxiliary Bhagavad Gita courses and classes and the yoga groups are having agrogis Bhagavad Gita courses between their yoga. And some of the yoga leaders, yoga group leaders also now interested in Krishna consciousness. Some of the people comment, you gotta be real comfortable. The yogurts don't lose their people. That's their bread and butter. It's a business for them. But if you're. It's an interesting thing. But now the temple president sitting so happy that he's reaching out, getting the Western people now he's getting so many western people coming through his yoga retreat area and being able to reach. These people are interested in spiritual life. They want to do yoga, they're doing yoga, they want to do vegetarian. They're like. It kind of reminds me of it. I mean to a very vague degree that reminds me a little of Russia, of the sons of Daksha, that they're doing yoga out there in the forest chanting some mantras. But they're not bhakti yogis. And so the Cats are them bhakti yogis, Nara when they came in, and then they went bhakti yogis and got them. So the yoga teachers would freak out if we did that. But really gradually we did a few. And what they want to do is have their own yoga retreats just for bhakti yoga. In the downtown Sydney center, they started a yoga. They have a big restaurant and a kind of alternative chum. This is not done by the temple. This is done by he Hasta rented the property from Pradakana, rented the property from the temple. And with that income, they paid for the mortgage. So he had a boutique underground floor and he changed into a yoga thing, yoga center. But they found that right now the biggest singing yoga scene is bhajans. They bring in yoga. They bring in kirkat singers from India. People pay $80 a seat to hear some guy chant, you know, go vinda jai jai, Hare Krishna, Moshivaya or whatever they want to chant. Most of them are vaishnavas. So they have every Saturday bhajan session and they get about 50 people coming in for bhajan. They're all like. Most of them are Australian, European background people. So it's kind of like a cutting edge breakthrough. That sounded like to do, but it's like in America, how many 50 million or more people that are doing yoga? How many? 20 million. I heard on the side. Published in 43 years ago.
Maybe not every week, but sometimes a year. I mean, because our generation, we're getting 50 and 60 and we grew up in alve and stuff.
So it's.
And the young people. This happens here in Atlanta. I've been to places they charge 20, $30 and people are doing bhajans.
I just went to. I just was in Italy and the temple asked me to do a program and the yogas and the Amrita yoga center. And I gave a multimedia mind control which led up into bhakti yoga. Enchanting. I control your mind with mantras, but you have to control your mind and senses. If you want the multimedia show, I can share it with you. Leave your old CD for 100 bucks. From Pune, you got all kinds of, like multimedia issues for preaching to students. They have to adapt it from where it was pretty direct at the end. It got very devotional, very fast. But like, the tamakrishnama is kind of the pioneer in this because it's very tough. I mean, I was in the Hong Kong to the hari now. And I was amazed. Nobody, you know, like anywhere in the world, you got People gathered on watch. Nobody stopped. Not only did they stop, they didn't even look. I don't know. It was like the weirdest thing. It's just like you wouldn't even look. And maybe one out of a thousand would actually kind of just. So it was really tough. At the end of the whole day, maybe there's two people kind of looking at us instead of the normal crowd you get in London, you do a harem. You get a whole Piccadilly Square. Some you get maybe 100, 200 people crowded around you. But then I was there once, and one swami gave a lecture. We follow the four principles. Pretty soon everybody squares. So I don't know if that was the. I don't think Rupi Goswami really wanted us to preach like that. No offense, devotees, but. So now the Sydney president is so happy with his alternative, with this preaching, and now he's encouraging Indian preaching. He said, you need both. He said he has a team of people. So he wants to know it now. Before, I wasn't fitting in. So it's like, oh, he identified me with the Indian, but now he wants me to go there. He invited me to come for a few days, all of the new year. But it's interesting that we're having probably this is the way to go. Find out the groups of people which already have some kind of interest in the. Cultivate them. I know that Peter Karma is going around in India giving lectures on the stage, but apparently he was doing quite successfully in Europe. Some of what his success rate is in America, I think I learned over time. So it gets people a little purified. Like these pachinkas, or. Whenever I say the pachinkas, they're the. What are they called? The Parashvans or Jesus ones. They got purified because of being in a holy place, doing austerities. Somehow we get people. Take some prashada chants and bhajans and just take it a little easy. Get them a little purified first. Gradually, then they become more receptive. That's what Ravi did here. So I want you to take some hints here from some tips. I was thinking about that, and I was trying to.
We were talking last night when you joined the temple, but you had direct experience with Shiloh KWA Ba, kind of reeling you in. It was in New York and Montreal. I couldn't remember where you joined, but what was your experience?
I actually joined in San Francisco 1 San Francisco. It was cultivated by a giant guru. I wanted to meet the guru. So as soon as I joined, I Flew off to Montreal. Encourage you.
What was his approach for you to.
I was already shaved up. I was embarrassed by Chai Nanda but I was looking for a guru. I was looking for. I was going to go to India. I'd already been through 25 or six different yoga groups and spiritual organizations. I was the Chamundi narrative and really trying to go to India. I was like I was not the ordinary person I was already very much into. I was vegetarian for a year. I was doing all these mystical practices in my house and Rio county in Galvesh Ordinary. But when I came there Jai Danda was on encouraging that. He just engaged me building the Rathkar and non stop talk to me and gave me Prashada. Somebody gave him Upendra who gave me a set of Prabhupada. Chanted beats by accident tell me to go out and chant. So I sat in my yoga position and chanted for six hours and I stopped 32 hours. I was. Tears are coming from my eyes. I was like wow, this is the most powerful meditation I ever did. I came back sometimes you got those beads. You gotta get some dramas beads.
This was in 1967, 68. So it's people like Johnny Nanda who was giving like seashell. But he was so encouraging.
At the same time as he was trying to get his Roth card finished one week. Encouraged him. You hammer so great. You're such a nice somebody. Wow. And then when I went to Prabhu, when I went then I shaved up on the Radhya to a day. Decided I'm going to try it fully and practice that this looks like what I'm looking for. And then I arrived in Montreal. I was shaved up with a Brahmachari dress on. So then there wasn't so many devotees said probably everybody. So he said who's that? Well, he's back to J from San Francisco. He'll come and take lunch with me tomorrow. Then he talked to me and said should I go to India? I said I'll burst the training here but I'll send the emulator. Then he calculated me by. He had me be the assistant to his secretary.
Who's the secretary?
Belinda Dawson was the one I was attracting. I think her husband was. I don't know I was really into. She was the one that was taking church. So whenever they. When Prabha took his nap in the afternoon I would sit outside the door in case he rang the bell on something which usually didn't but occasionally he did. So they had to have somebody on call at all times, 24 hours. So that's the time they went out shopping for his whole family. Then after a while he probably gave me. So I ordered a D rose every day. He wanted a rose. I said it would make it was good for its health. And then how to do that. Didn't want me to get the rose. But you know how jealous you are. Why I'm getting the rose. I should do my service. I do rose. I come back, I work double time. He asked me to give him a rose and he said no, you can't do it. So I just became a huge shouting match or something. I just ran out of the temples. I got any problem until the game. So I got the rose. It was like it was a hole. Like getting that rose was a big fight. It wasn't an easy thing. Real simple thing to get a rose. But somehow I got the rose to be able to draw my bag to my service. I don't know if anything it was.
Supposed to convert a bolus galley at the Temple of Matrix.
Yeah we had the wooden alleys and then in between the gutters were filled up with. When I came was already the woodwork was already done. They put planks and put linoleum over. So you have this nice hardwood bowling alley with linoleum stripper that's filling up the gutter. There was an eight lane bowling alley and so about five lanes was a temple room and three lanes was the ashram. I got a partition and beneath us there was some kind of a cotton factory. I don't know, maybe. Maybe thread or weaving or something. All night long they worked.
It was an industrial area.
Not really.
There was a factory store.
There was this work. There was some kind of a. I don't know if you want to call it a factory. It was something right under the floor under us there was some kind of over.
And so Hoansu was the tunnel president and Kirtananda had been up there earlier.
I don't have any connection to Kirtananda, but the first president when I got there was an Arden for Excuse me. I'm sorry. I guess I don't know if there was another one before tonight. So what I and then you were.
Sent to show the Pablo ticket and you went 71, 71st and did you stay there?
Did you come back Stayed Never came back to new when they installed property and around the world ticket Right. Last time I came to Atlanta the next couple years after that they asked me to my career so praying on the most asked me to go to South America because he had heart condition. Then like I go there and preach. And in those days it was the zormal assignments to their guru. So they required more of a guru at least in this issue. And so they accepted me in South America. But Mexico said we want a charity day known to a charity. Then about a year after that he asked me that we have Kriyana Rajesh here in Atlanta. I was here as you could see earlier when Pranayan was his name. Pranayan wasn't that you can see here. He was the guru he had become. Yes. There was problems with him and the GBCs that were here all about. There was some. But I need for him to be here also. And then they left greater GBC gradually and I got in as a GBC Marsh.
Are you currently Gucci in the Southeast?
No.
Still have your portfolio in you?
I'm a trustee of the properties here and I'm GBC emeritus.
We have some disciples that was there in the past also. But you still hearing by the commission and you have a president.
