Jim Carter explores Airchat, a new social network built around voice instead of text. The platform uses AI to transcribe and translate audio in real time, letting people communicate across languages without typing.
Welcome to the Prompt. I'm Jim Carter. This show guarantees tech news and updates that shape your life and future. Since it's essential now to stay on top of AI, we'll figure it out together so you don't fall behind. I'm here to explain it, offer some deep insights and spark a little curiosity along the way. If you're a techie like me or just AI curious, hit that follow button for the advantage you deserve. Let's dive in Today I want to tell you about a brand new social media network that, believe it or not, is actually different from the others. The best way I can describe it is that it's a mix of the best parts of Clubhouse's audio and short form text communication On Twitter. It's called Air Chat. About a week ago my Twitter feed started showing a lot of interest and a few people I follow had invites. As of right now, it's still an invite only social network. When I was invited in, the most interesting thing that struck me right away was the fact there was no text box or anywhere to type anything. The sole and only way that you communicate and be social inside this network is by speaking. Now. Services have adapted audio for years. At its root, audio based communication inside of social media is nothing new. We see audio notes in DMs, audio and video recordings inside of posts and Twitter spaces. And for those of you like me, who were looking for something to do during the pandemic, Clubhouse was a great way to communicate via audio in small and large groups. But what is fascinating to me about this specific network is it's kind of like the act of sending an audio note through your messages application to one person. However, everyone who is on the platform can listen to it as much as Clubhouse served a purpose and was launched during the pandemic at the perfect time when we all basically had nothing else to do but look for some kind of way to have human connection. My biggest gripe with Clubhouse is I never wanted to spend the time in one sitting to have a longer conversation. It always felt like a burden. The most interesting difference on Air Chat is the fact that it's passive quick audio communication. The same way that I typically draft my thoughts for podcasts when I'm driving or walking my dog. I find myself drawn to popping on Air chat between things, answering a few questions or adding some kind of value to a conversation and then letting it go and moving on to the next. And somehow, although not surprising, all the conversations feel so much more genuine because it requires speaking rather than typing, automating or copying and pasting. Now why am I talking about this when my focus is all about AI? Well, the answer is actually simple and maybe not what you're thinking. The most prominent core feature of the social network is the fact that when you record an audio or video clip in order to post it to the network, it transcribes your spoken word in real time and posts it so the person who's receiving it can read and listen to it at the same time. It's a brilliant use of artificial intelligence at scale and doing it in a way that makes it easy for everyone to search for topics they're looking for and engage with those that they want to talk more to and go back in history to find information without having to listen to everything again. You might have heard of a user on Twitter that goes by the name of Navaal. He's been in the tech and entrepreneurship scene long enough to see the rise and fall of many startups and plenty of efforts with social media. With a following of over 2 million on Twitter alone, Naval is regarded as one of the industry's strongest thought leaders, and he happens to be one of the titans behind this social network, trying to approach it with decency and and progress in a new way. I think that's one of the most unique things about the way this startup launched. The founders and early developers are eager to push the edges in a new way, and they're doing it rapidly and with a lot of transparency. Interestingly enough, I don't see myself using Air Chat all the time, and I realize it is absolutely not for everyone. In fact, I'm still on the fence about how committed I want to be to this. In the early days, I grew a pretty decent sized audience by being an early adopter of Clubhouse, but I got pretty tired of it quickly, just like a lot of us did. Especially now that everybody uses it to market and sell. It probably won't be long until there are sales strategies happening for AirChat too. I've already started thinking of ways that I can infuse what I do into it, but right now, while it's small and growing, there is no patience for sales. It's all about honest, open, short form communications that add value and for what it's worth, I'm here for it. The AirChat team has made their roadmap available and they talk about it on the platform, which is one thing I do love. They're continuing to infuse AI into what they do to make it fantastic, so I'm excited to see where it goes. In fact, one feature they just launched that I discovered today is that you can speak in any language and their transcription will automatically translate it to English in the same exact text output. This brings together the entire community in one unified language. Discussion that's a pretty incredible use of AI in a new and more effective way than ever if you ask me. So I'm curious, if you are on air chat, what are your thoughts? I'd love to connect with you there and continue trying these short form discussions.
