Jim Carter used Google's Gemini Deep Research to analyze how the LA fires affected his home's value and the broader real estate market. He walks through his actual research process and what the AI tool uncovered about the fires' financial impact.
Hey everyone, Jim Carter here, and welcome back to the prompt. Today we're taking a closer look at Google Gemini's Deep Research feature, and I'm even going to share with you how I've personally used this tool to navigate life during the aftermath of the LA fires. This is a big deal for anyone who needs to do tough research, whether you're a student, a business owner, or just someone trying to understand a complicated topic. So what exactly is Deep Research? Well, imagine you've got a question that requires going through a lot of information. Something like, what's the market share of AI tools in 2025? Or in my case, how will the devastating fires in Los Angeles impact my home's value in Whittier? With Deep Research, you just type in your question and let Gemini go to work. It creates a research plan just like a professional consultant would. Then it browses hundreds of relevant sites, analyzing data from reliable sources. And finally, it delivers a clear report, complete with charts, citations, and ready to use insights. I recently put Deep Research to the test with a very personal question. As you may know, I live in Whittier, a suburb of LA County. With the recent devastating fires, my family and I are considering our options. Should we sell our home and roll the equity into a new place, or keep it and buy something else to rent out? I fed Gemini my question, and in about 10 seconds it gave me a research plan to review and approve. The plan included finding reports on the impact of fires on the LA county housing market, historical data on how natural disasters affect home prices, information on the current economy, potential changes to insurance rates and property taxes, the rental market outlook, and any government assistance programs. I gave the go ahead and Gemini got to work. It spent about six minutes researching 29 different sites and came back with an incredibly detailed report. It got me thinking about things I hadn't even considered, like how it might be harder to get homeowners insurance now. So how does Deep Research compare to other tools? Unlike Semantic, Scholar or Elicit, which are great for academic research, Deep Research doesn't just provide data. It works on its own, refining its analysis and delivering useful results. It's like having a research assistant that can process up to 1,500 pages of content at once, using advanced reasoning to compile professional grade briefs. Plus, Deep Research is integrated with Google Docs so you can easily export your reports for editing and collaboration. It's available in over 45 languages and more than 150 countries. And if you subscribe to Google One AI Premium, you get priority access to experimental models designed for complex tasks like coding, math and reasoning. Now, Deep research isn't instant. It takes a few minutes to generate a report, unlike some other tools that prioritize speed. But that's because it's taking the time to be thorough and accurate. It's a refreshing approach in a world where we often prioritize quick answers over correct ones. Imagine the possibilities. A student working on a thesis, a a marketer planning a campaign, an entrepreneur conducting market analysis. Deep research could save hours of work and provide insights you might have missed. If you're curious about how this AI driven research tool works, I'm an open book inside my Slack community. It's a safe space where we explore the strategies, the workflows of AI in research, and so many other topics which I love to lead. It's a great way to access everything me and my team offer at a fraction of the cost of hiring us one on one. As I leave you today, I have a lot to think about, but honestly, I wouldn't be able to make the best decision for me and my family without the help of Gemini's Deep Research feature. Let me know if it has helped you in your own life as much as it's helped me. Drop me a dm. I'd love to chat. As always, thanks for tuning in. I'll catch you in the next episode.
