Jim Carter discusses DeepSeek R1, an open-source AI model from China that rivals ChatGPT. The model offers major cost advantages and has shaken up the global AI race, challenging the dominance of Western tech companies.
Hey there. Welcome back to the prompt. I'm your host, Jim Carter, and today we're jumping into a new AI model out of China that's making strong enough waves to rival the likes of ChatGPT. And get this, they've gone and open sourced the whole thing. Meet Deepseek R1. The reason Deepseek has everyone so fired up is because it isn't just another regular AI. It's got some serious power that has the potential to shake up the entire industry. First off, Deepseek can handle all kinds of information. Not just text. We're talking images, audio, video, the whole package. While the specifics of its processing capabilities aren't widely documented just yet, it's clear that Deepseek is pushing what AI can do. But here's where it gets really interesting. By open sourcing their model, Deepseek has opened the doors for innovation. Developers are already building models based on Deep Seq, with over 500 models created and racking up over 2.5 million downloads on platforms like Hugging Face. This kind of openness and teamwork is exactly what the AI community needs to keep moving forward. Like ChatGPT, Deepseek keeps on learning and improving over time, which means it can adapt and get smarter with each passing day. Now, I mentioned that Deepseek is making waves and boy, is that an understatement. The effects of its emergence are being felt by tech giants across the board. Nvidia's stock took a hit. OpenAI accused Deepseek of using its model for training, and meta launched multiple war rooms to figure out what this means for them. It's clear that Deepseek is forcing the industry to sit up and take notice. But beyond the boardrooms of Silicon Valley, Deepseek's rise highlights something even bigger. The growing role of China in AI innovation. As AI development spreads beyond the us, the race for AI dominance is heating up. And with its cost efficient models and open source approach, Deepseek is putting pressure on the established players to rethink their strategies. Just to give you an idea of how disruptive Deepseek is, reports indicate that Deepseek offers services at a fraction of OpenAI's cost costs, with some estimates suggesting prices 20 to 40 times cheaper. That's a big change for businesses and developers looking to use AI without breaking the bank. Deepseek is achieving all of this using less advanced hardware. Thanks to its mixture of experts, architecture and efficient training methods, it's able to squeeze out high performance from Nvidia H800 GPUs. This kind of technological change could shift the entire landscape of AI development to more cost effective solutions. It outperformed models like Llama 3.1 and Quen 2.5 while matching GPT4.O and Claude 3.5 Sonnet in benchmark tests. And get this, DeepSeq has shown a 96% accuracy in disease diagnosis compared to GPT4's 85%.
And AI leaders are already on top of it. Perplexity integrated Deepseek into their Pro Search, which means even more powerful reasoning at your fingertips. Deepseek is also changing the way people think about prompting. I'm even testing it inside Bara AI workflows to see how it handles more complex automation and and so far it's looking promising.
And clearly I'm not the only one paying attention. Deepseek just hit number one on Apple's App Store, proving that even without OpenAI level resources, disruptive innovation is possible. It's a huge signal that people are ready for alternatives and competition in AI is heating up in the best way. Now, I know I've thrown a lot of technical jargon at you, but here's the bottom line. Deepseek is changing the industry for the better. It's not just another model, it's a sign of a new era of AI development, one that's more open, collaborative and accessible than ever before. So what does this mean for you? Well, if you're as excited about the potential of AI as I am, now's the time to get involved. Whether you're a developer looking to build on top of Deep Seek's model, a business owner looking to use AI for your operations, or just someone who's curious about the future of technology, there's never been a better time to jump in. And if you want to stay on the cutting edge of all things AI, I've got just the place for you. Come join me and a growing community of AI enthusiasts over at my FAST Foundation's Slack community.
