Jim Carter breaks down OpenAI's O1 model and its advanced reasoning capabilities. The AI outperforms experts on benchmarks across math, coding, and science. Carter also discusses where O1 still falls short and what it could do next.
Welcome to the Prompt. I'm Jim Carter. This show guarantees tech news and updates that shape your life and future. Since it's essential now to stay on top of AI, we'll figure it out together so you don't fall behind. I'm here to explain it, offer some deep insights, and spark a little curiosity along the way. If you're a techie like me, or just AI curious, hit that follow button for the advantage you deserve. Let's dive in. Hey, welcome back to the Prompt. I'm your host, Jim Carter. And today we're looking at how OpenAI's new O1 model is turning heads by outperforming humans in fields like coding, chemistry, and mathematics. This is a big deal. Let's break it down. Okay, so the O1 model is designed to think more like us, taking time to reason through complex problems before answering. It's not just spitting out memorized facts, it's actually contemplating and analyzing, just like we do. And the results are pretty incredible. In competitive programming on CodeForces, O1 scored in the 89th percentile. That's right. It's outperforming most professional programmers out there. And in the USA Math Olympiad qualifier, O1 placed among the top 500 students. It even outperformed PhD level humans on a benchmark covering physics, biology, and chemistry. I mean, this AI is giving experts a run for their money. But here's the thing. OpenAI released two versions of the O1 preview, the full powered version for the most challenging tasks, and O1 mini, a smaller, faster, and more cost effective alternative. And get this, O1 mini is 80% cheaper to run than O1 preview, but it still maintains competitive performance on coding benchmarks. It's like having a genius coder on your team without breaking the bank. Now, O1 isn't perfect. It's slower than some other AI models, sometimes taking over 10 seconds to answer complex questions. And it's more expensive to run with input costs three times higher and output costs four times higher than GPT4. There are also reports of increased hallucinations, which are confident but incorrect statements. And currently it lacks features like web browsing and file analysis that are available in other models. But despite these limitations, O1 represents a big leap forward in AI reasoning capabilities. Its performance across these benchmarks shows its potential to assist in solving complex problems in fields ranging from scientific research to software development. I mean, imagine an AI that can help healthcare researchers annotate cell sequencing data, or physicists generate complicated mathematical formulas. The possibilities are endless. The release of O1 has definitely intensified the AI race. Companies like Google, Anthropic and even Elon Musk's Xai are all working on similar thinking AI models. This competition is driving rapid advancements in the field and I for one am super excited to see where it leads. Looking ahead, OpenAI plans to extend O1 mini access to all free ChatGPT users in the future, improve the model's capabilities, address current limitations, and experiment with AI models capable of even longer periods of thinking to solve increasingly complex problems. It's clear that O is just the beginning of a new era in AI development. So what does this all mean? Well, while O1 isn't going to replace human intelligence anytime soon, it's a significant step towards creating AI that can truly reason and problem solve like we do. And as these models continue to improve, they're going to open up new possibilities in countless fields. And let me just say, if you're looking to use the power of AI for your own projects or business, my team at Bara Agency has you covered. I'm launching a new service called Bara AI which which offers custom AI workflows tailored to your needs. If you're interested, head over to Bara AI and join the waitlist for demos. I'd love to have you along for the ride while we push what's possible with AI. Alright, that's all for now. As always, thanks for tuning in and let's keep exploring the incredible potential of AI together, one prompt at a time. Until next time, stay curious.
