Jim Carter III breaks down which ChatGPT model to use for different tasks. GPT4.0 handles basics well, GPT4.5 is faster, O3 excels at reasoning, O4 mini is cheap, and O1 Pro tackles complex problems. Pick based on what you're actually trying to do.
Hey everyone, welcome back to the prompt. I'm your host Jim Carter. Today we're clearing up something I've been getting asked a lot lately, and that is how to pick the right ChatGPT model. Because let's be honest, there are so many now. GPT4.0 GPT 4.504 Mini 04 Mini High 0301 Pro it's enough to make your head spin. And they're all powerful, but they're not all built for the same job. When GPT4O dropped about a year ago, we were all pretty impressed. Voice vision, Real time translation Suddenly it felt like we had an all in one assistant in our pocket. But not everyone needs all that, and that's where people get tripped up. So today I want to break it down simply model by model and give you some real examples of how to match the right one to the work you actually want to get done. Let's start with GPT4O. This is your everyday do it all model. It's great for things like summarizing audio from a meeting, explaining what's in a photo, or even translating a conversation in real time. If you're multitasking across creative visual and language heavy projects, 4O is probably your best bet. It's fast, it's flexible, and it just works. But if you're doing something that needs a bit more thought behind it, like reviewing a legal contract, auditing code, or thinking through product failure scenarios, GPT 4.5 or O3 might be a better fit. 4.5 is sharper when it comes to nuance and long form reasoning. And O3? That model thinks it's built for deep analysis and complex research, not just surface level responses. Now, if you're technical and moving fast, you'll want to look at O4 mini. It's great for debugging, writing efficient code, or cranking out fast responses. I personally use it when I want a second set of eyes on a script or SQL query. And for high volume data tasks like crunching huge spreadsheets, parsing error logs, or building charts from raw CSVs. A VOR Mini High is built for speed and scale. Let's say you're a business owner or content creator juggling podcast scripts, video descriptions and thumbnails. GPT4.O is going to give you a great mix of speed and quality, especially if you're layering visuals or voiceovers into your work. But if you're writing a long form newsletter or ghostwriting for a client and need tone, structure and nuance to land just right you might find GPT 4.5 sharper and more consistent. On the flip side, a growth marketer pulling ad performance data every morning might favor O4 mini high because it won't flinch at large CSVs and can spit out clean summaries and visuals fast. A good way to think about it is like this. If you're working on a single task that requires depth, say writing an investor brief, go for a model with better reasoning like GPT 4.5. But if you're running a lean business and jumping between social captions, even email replies and spreadsheet summaries, stick with 4.0 or O4 mini. Don't overkill. Match the muscle to the mission. Then there's O1 Pro. This one's reserved for very specialized work like medical diagnostics, financial modeling or compliance workflows. It's got a limited number of monthly requests, but if you're in a high stakes industry where precision matters most, this is the one. Here's the biggest takeaway. AI isn't just one thing anymore. It's a toolbox. And picking the right model is like choosing the right tool. You wouldn't use a chainsaw to trim a houseplant, right? Same principle here. Use the model that's right sized for the job and you'll get better results faster. So a quick recap because I just threw a lot of info at you. GPT4O is your go to generalist. GPT 4.5 and 03 handle deep reasoning and more complex thinking. 04 mini is your speed demon for code and simple tasks. O4 mini high scales up for heavy data. Work it and a one pro is for specialists who can't afford to get it wrong. And honestly, you don't have to get it perfect on the first try. Test them out. See what works for your workflow. Start with GPT4O, then swap it for 4.5 or 0.4Mini and compare the difference. That's where the real learning happens. I'll put a super simple quick reference style breakdown in the show notes, so don't worry about writing this down.
