Jim walks through Google Maps' new AI features, including personalized search and improved satellite imagery. The update lets you explore places more intuitively and helps urban planners work with better data.
Hey everyone. Welcome back. Jim here. And today we're checking out some exciting updates from Google that are set to change the way we explore and discover the world around us. So if you haven't heard, Google is adding generative AI to Google Maps and Google Earth. Imagine asking Google Maps to find you the quirkiest bookstores in Seattle or the most romantic restaurants with live music near you. With the power of Large language models or LLMs, Google Maps can now understand complex natural language questions and and give personalized search results that match what you're looking for. It's like having a local guide right in your pocket. But that's not all. Generative AI is also making satellite images in Google Earth clearer and more precise. This means more detailed and accurate pictures of the Earth's surface, which is huge for things like environmental monitoring, farming and disaster response. And get this, generative AI can cut data processing time by up to 30%, making it easier to spot land use patterns, track changes in vegetation, and watch urban development. Now, you might be wondering how Google is doing this. Well, a big part of it comes from the help of over 300 million community members. Their reviews, ratings and photos are analyzed by AI to make maps more accurate and give trustworthy suggestions. This data is key for creating personalized recommendations and area summaries that help you quickly understand a place. Speaking of area summaries, this is where generative AI really stands out. Google Maps can now create detailed summaries that include information about local businesses, attractions and user experiences. So it doesn't matter if you're looking for a vintage vibe or family friendly activities. Google Maps has it covered right now. This feature is currently in an experimental phase and is only available to select US local guides. Google's created a step by step approach that relies on the most active and passionate members of the maps community. So their feedback is essential for improving the feature before a wider rollout. It's a smart approach because it will help them find and fix any issues before going global. Now, I know what you might be thinking, Jim. This all sounds great, but what does it mean for me? Well, let me tell you. With generative AI in Google Maps, you're getting a personalized search and discovery experience like never before. You can ask follow up questions to refine your search results and find places that match your specific needs and preferences. It's like having a conversation with your map. And it's not just about finding cool spots to hang out. Generative AI is also helping city planners and decision makers by providing predictive modeling for climate change. And custom visuals for things like identifying areas with the fewest EV chargers. This technology has the potential to make a real impact on how we understand and interact with the world around us. It's pretty cool how Google is making search and discovery more intuitive, personalized, and honestly fun. Generative AI is changing things for Google Maps and Google Earth, and I for one am super excited to see where this technology takes us. Now. If you're as excited about this stuff as I am, I'd love to chat more on it. Come join my Fast Foundations slack community@fast foundations.com Slack, where we're always checking out the latest in AI. It's my spot to share all the cool tools and strategies I'm seeing in the space, and to help you figure out all the changes. I'd love to have you be a part of the conversation over there, and I'm taking signups on the waitlist as we speak. As always, thanks for tuning in to the prompt. Let's stay on top of what's developing in AI together, one episode at a time. That's all for now. See you next time. Sam.
