Jeanette Gower talks about foals that don't match what you hoped for. She reframes disappointment as feedback about your mare, stallion, or vision. A foal with excellent bloodlines taught her that breeding is about learning, not just outcomes.

G'day everyone, and welcome to Breeding Reflections. I'm Jeanette Gower. Now, let me ask you something: ever bred a foal that just— wasn't what you pictured? You know the feeling. You did everything right, studied the pedigrees, matched conformation, temperament, movement. You had this vision. And then, the foal arrives. Maybe the topline's off, maybe the attitude's different, or maybe it just doesn't have that stamp you were hoping for. And in that moment, it's easy to feel like you failed. But here's the reframe. A foal isn't a failure. It's feedback. Every single pairing teaches you something. Maybe it shows you what your mare really passes on. Maybe it reveals a gap in your stallion's strengths. Or maybe, just maybe, it forces you to ask, "Was my vision even realistic? Or was I chasing someone else's dream?" Because sometimes, the biggest lessons aren't in what you got, but in what you didn't get. That foal might not be a champion, but it could be the pivot point for your whole breeding program, if you're willing to see it differently. I'll never forget this one foal I bred years ago, gorgeous bloodlines, but just lacked that spark I was after. Took me ages to realize it wasn't her fault. I'd been so fixated on this perfect cross, I hadn't stopped to ask if it was right for my goals. She ended up teaching me more than any champion ever did. So tell me, what foal taught you the most? Drop it in the comments, I'd love to hear your stories. And if you're ready to dive deeper into breeder mindset, check out my books, links below.
