24 Sept 2024 · 3 min
A short podcast-style talk by Jeff Dudan explaining why businesses struggle to scale. He presents a three-circle model—DNA (core beliefs), foundation (hires, systems, processes), and vision/purpose—and identifies the ‘chaos zone’ between foundation and vision as where scaling breaks down. Key remedies: calm the chaos through alignment, simplicity, discretionary effort, rapid iteration, and permissive failure. Contact and social links are offered for follow-up.

Why do businesses fail to scale? One of the questions I often get is why do businesses fail to scale? In my experience, every business has the potential to scale, but many fail because leadership doesn't effectively manage the chaos that growth brings. Let me explain what I mean by that. First, every business starts with a core. Imagine three concentric circles. The innermost circle represents your DNA. It's your core beliefs, your values, your principles. This is the foundation of who you are as a business leader and what your company stands for. These are your non negotiables. It's your identity and the cornerstone of your organization. The next circle is your foundation. This includes your first hires, your leaders, your systems, your processes and technology. All the pieces that help build something scalable. You need a strong foundation to handle growth, one that allows the business to achieve exit velocity as quickly quickly as possible. Now, beyond that, the third circle is where you define your purpose and your vision. On the outside of that circle, why do you exist? What problems are you solving? If you're successful, what does that success look like? Specifically, you need to clearly identify the impact you want to make and the people that you're helping. Also consider an important question that many business owners overlook. Who is the natural owner of this business? When you've built it to where you want it to be, who would be the buyer? The space between your foundation and your outer circle of your vision and your purpose and your impact. That's where all the chaos happens. I call this the chaos zone. It's where businesses tend to fail to scale. As a leader, your job is to calm that swirl. Misalignment is a big factor here. Growth brings changes, and if people or systems aren't aligned with your vision, you can lose focus. Another issue is complexity. Remember, simplicity scales, but complexity fails. Building a culture of discretionary effort, where your team consistently goes above and beyond because they believe in the mission, is key to getting through this chaos. You need people who are focused, clear on what needs to be done and always looking out for the company's best interest. And finally, it's important to maintain grace within your organization, iterating quickly and giving people the freedom to fail. Forward to just like Elon Musk with SpaceX is critical. You want a team that's willing to take risks, learn from mistakes and keep moving forward with absolute trust and clarity. If you're struggling with scaling, focus on these three elements. First, your DNA, a solid foundation, and then a clear vision. Work on managing that chaos, simplifying your processes and aligning your people. These steps will put you on a path to building a business that that can scale successfully.
