Can You Drink Coffee During a Fast?

Ben Greenfield says black coffee is fine during a fast because it boosts fat burning and has a thermogenic effect. But add butter, cream, or coconut oil and you've broken the fast, since your body has to process those calories first.

Hey, I'm Ben Greenfield. Top of the morning, top of the day. I don't know what that morning greeting is anyways, though. Coffee. Coffee is a very big staple in the Greenfield house. I have a great big old cup of black coffee every morning. But I'm often asked this million dollar question. Does coffee actually keep you in a fasted state, or does it break an intermittent fast or an overnight fast or a period of fasting? The fact is, the cool thing about coffee is that it actually enhances your fatty acid utilization, your ability to be able to move fat from adipose tissue and burn it in other parts of your body. Not only that, but coffee has what's called a thermogenic effect, meaning that it can enhance your metabolic rate. Now, I'm not necessarily endorsing that you go out and buy a bunch of 400 milligram fat loss caffeine pills to lose weight, but that can be an added benefit of coffee, but especially if you consume it in a fasted state without a bunch of foods added to it. Now, once you begin to toss some butter in your coffee and maybe a big old slab of coconut oil in your coffee or some heavy creamer or raw milk in your coffee, and maybe some more butter for good measure, well, the fact is, your body actually has to deal with all those calories and all those fats before it actually taps into its own fat as a fuel. So technically, these compounds, even though they don't spike your blood glucose or spike your insulin, they do take you out of a fasted state. And for that reason, if you're trying to lose weight, you may want to save adding all the calories to your coffee until later in the day if you're trying to stay fasted. Now, the cool thing about adding all these fats to your coffee is that it does take a lot of the cholesterols in coffee that would normally not be able to cross your blood brain barrier, and it makes them available to your brain, which is nice for a cognitive boosting effect. A lot of these fats are also wonderful for the gut and for other elements of your metabolism, but they definitely do take you out of a fasted state if you add them to your coffee. So I drink a big old cup of plain black coffee in the morning. I go 100% mold free. This is the only organic coffee, one of the only organic coffees on the face of the planet.
